Reversible electrochemical oxidation of sulfur in ionic liquid for high-voltage Al-S batteries.

ABSTRACT: Sulfur is an important electrode material in metal-sulfur batteries. It is usually coupled with metal anodes and undergoes electrochemical reduction to form metal sulfides. Herein, we demonstrate, for the first time, the reversible sulfur oxidation process in AlCl₃/carbamide ionic liquid, where sulfur is electrochemically oxidized by AlCl₄^- to form AlSCl₇. The sulfur oxidation is: 1) highly reversible with an efficiency of ~94%; and 2) workable within a wide range of high potentials. As a result, the Al-S battery based on sulfur oxidation can be cycled steadily around ~1.8 V, which is the highest operation voltage in Al-S batteries. The study of sulfur oxidation process benefits the understanding of sulfur chemistry and provides a valuable inspiration for the design of other high-voltage metal-sulfur batteries, not limited to Al-S configurations.

Concentrated Ionic-Liquid-Based Electrolytes for High-Voltage Lithium Batteries with Improved Performance at Room Temperature.

Project description:Ionic liquids (ILs) have been widely explored as alternative electrolytes to combat the safety issues associated with conventional organic electrolytes. However, hindered by their relatively high viscosity, the electrochemical performances of IL-based cells are generally assessed at medium-to-high temperature and limited cycling rate. A suitable combination of alkoxy-functionalized cations with asymmetric imide anions can effectively lower the lattice energy and improve the fluidity of the IL material. The Li/Li1.2 Ni0.2 Mn0.6 O2 cell employing N-N-diethyl-N-methyl-N-(2-methoxyethyl)ammonium (fluorosulfonyl)(trifluoromethanesulfonyl)imide (DEMEFTFSI)-based electrolyte delivered an initial capacity of 153 mAh g-1 within the voltage range of 2.5-4.6 V, with a capacity retention of 65.5 % after 500 cycles and stable coulombic efficiencies exceeding 99.5 %. Moreover, preliminary battery tests demonstrated that the drawbacks in terms of rate capability could be improved by using Li-concentrated IL-based electrolytes. The improved room-temperature rate performance of these electrolytes was likely owing to the formation of Li+ -containing aggregate species, changing the concentration-dependent Li-ion transport mechanism.

2,4-Toluene diisocyanate detection in liquid and gas environments through electrochemical oxidation in an ionic liquid.

Project description:The electrochemical oxidation of 2,4-toluene diisocyanate (2,4-TDI) in an ionic liquid (IL) has been systematically characterized to determine plausible electrochemical and chemical reaction mechanisms and to define the optimal detection methods for such a highly significant analyte. It has been found that the use of an IL as the electrolyte allows the oxidation of 2,4-TDI to occur at a less positive anodic potential with no side reactions as compared to traditional acetonitrile based electrolytes. UV-Vis, FT-IR, cyclic voltammetry and Electrochemical Impedance Spectroscopy (EIS) studies have revealed the unique mechanisms of dimerization of 2,4-TDI at the electrode interface by self-addition reactions, which can be utilized to improve the selectivity of detection. The study of 2,4-TDI redox chemistry further facilitates the development of a robust amperometric sensing methodology by selecting a hydrophobic IL ([C4mpy][NTf2]) and by restricting the potential window to only include the oxidation process. Thus, this innovative electrochemical sensor is capable of avoiding the two most ubiquitous interferents in ambient conditions (i.e. humidity and oxygen), thereby enhancing the sensor performance and reliability for real world applications. The method was established to detect 2,4-TDI in both liquid and gas phases. The limits of detection (LOD) values were 130.2 ppm and 0.7862 ppm, respectively, for the two phases, and are comparable to the safety standards reported by NIOSH. The as-developed 2.4-TDI amperometric sensor exhibits a sensitivity of 1.939 μA ppm(-1). Moreover, due to the simplicity of design and the use of an IL both as a solvent and non-volatile electrolyte, the sensor has the potential to be miniaturized for smart sensing protocols in distributed sensor applications.

Nanostructured liquid-crystalline Li-ion conductors with high oxidation resistance: molecular design strategy towards safe and high-voltage-operation Li-ion batteries.

Project description:Nanostructured, uncharged liquid-crystalline (LC) electrolyte molecules having bicyclohexyl and cyclic carbonate moieties have been developed for application in Li-ion batteries as quasi-solid electrolytes, which suppress leakage and combustion. Towards the development of safe and high performance Li-ion batteries, we have designed Li-ion conductive LC materials with high oxidation resistance using density functional theory (DFT) calculation. The DFT calculation suggests that a mesogen with a bicyclohexyl moiety is suitable for the high-oxidation-resistance LC electrolytes compared to a mesogen containing phenylene moieties. A tri(oxyethylene) chain introduced between the cyclic carbonate and the bicyclohexyl moiety in the core part tunes the viscosity and the miscibility with Li salts. The designed Li-ion conductive LC molecules exhibit smectic LC phases over a wide temperature range, and they are miscible with added lithium bis(trifluoromethanesulfonyl)imide (LiTFSI) salt up to 5 : 5 in molar ratio in their smectic phases. The resulting LC mixtures with LiTFSI show oxidation resistance above 4.0 V vs. Li/Li+ in cyclic voltammetry measurements. The enhanced oxidation resistance improves the performance of Li half-cells containing LC electrolytes.

Allylic ionic liquid electrolyte-assisted electrochemical surface passivation of LiCoO2 for advanced, safe lithium-ion batteries.

Project description:Room-temperature ionic liquid (RTIL) electrolytes have attracted much attention for use in advanced, safe lithium-ion batteries (LIB) owing to their nonvolatility, high conductivity, and great thermal stability. However, LIBs containing RTIL-electrolytes exhibit poor cyclability because electrochemical side reactions cause problematic surface failures of the cathode. Here, we demonstrate that a thin, homogeneous surface film, which is electrochemically generated on LiCoO2 from an RTIL-electrolyte containing an unsaturated substituent on the cation (1-allyl-1-methylpiperidinium bis(trifluoromethanesulfonyl)imide, AMPip-TFSI), can avert undesired side reactions. The derived surface film comprised of a high amount of organic species from the RTIL cations homogenously covered LiCoO2 with a <25 nm layer and helped suppress unfavorable thermal reactions as well as electrochemical side reactions. The superior performance of the cell containing the AMPip-TFSI electrolyte was further elucidated by surface, electrochemical, and thermal analyses.

Unlocking Liquid Sulfur Chemistry for Fast-Charging Lithium-Sulfur Batteries.

Project description:A recent study of liquid sulfur produced in an electrochemical cell has prompted further investigation into regulating Li-S oxidation chemistry. In this research, we examined the liquid-to-solid sulfur transition dynamics by visually observing the electrochemical generation of sulfur on a graphene-based substrate. We investigated the charging of polysulfides at various current densities and discovered a quantitative correlation between the size and number density of liquid sulfur droplets and the applied current. However, the areal capacities exhibited less sensitivity. This observation offers valuable insights for designing fast-charging sulfur cathodes. By incorporating liquid sulfur into Li-S batteries with a high sulfur loading of 4.2 mg cm-2, the capacity retention can reach ∼100%, even when increasing the rate from 0.1 to 3 C. This study contributes to a better understanding of the kinetics involved in the liquid-solid sulfur growth in Li-S chemistry and presents viable strategies for optimizing fast-charging operations.

Anion-mediated approach to overcome oxidation in ether electrolytes for high-voltage sodium-ion batteries.

Project description:The ether-based electrolytes are acknowledged for their compatibility with a diverse array of sodium-ion battery anodes, as well as their capability to enable efficient and reversible electrochemical reactions. However, they encounter a challenge of oxidation at high voltages. We find that a standard diglyme-based electrolyte starts to oxidize and break down at voltages exceeding 3.9 V (vs. Na+/Na). This deterioration is attributed to the nucleophilic nature of the diglyme solvent and the presence of oxygen atoms that possess two unpaired electrons. To address this issue, we incorporate foreign anions into the electrolyte system to passivate the reactive sites of terminal H on diglyme solvents, inhibiting further dehydrogenation and oxidation during battery operation. The constructed cathode electrolyte interphase, enriched with NaF and NaNxOy, substantially boosts the oxidation resistance of electrolyte to over 4.8 V (vs. Na+/Na), expanding the stability window and rendering it feasible for various high-voltage cathode materials. Our approach also ensures compatibility with either hard carbon or commercial graphite anodes, guaranteeing operation in pouch cells. This study elucidates the relationship between interfacial chemistry and oxidation tolerance at high voltages, offering an approach to the development of practical ether-based electrolytes for high-energy-density battery technologies.

Supercooled liquid sulfur maintained in three-dimensional current collector for high-performance Li-S batteries.

Project description:In lithium-sulfur (Li-S) chemistry, the electrically/ionically insulating nature of sulfur and Li2S leads to sluggish electron/ion transfer kinetics for sulfur species conversion. Sulfur and Li2S are recognized as solid at room temperature, and solid-liquid phase transitions are the limiting steps in Li-S batteries. Here, we visualize the distinct sulfur growth behaviors on Al, carbon, Ni current collectors and demonstrate that (i) liquid sulfur generated on Ni provides higher reversible capacity, faster kinetics, and better cycling life compared to solid sulfur; and (ii) Ni facilitates the phase transition (e.g., Li2S decomposition). Accordingly, light-weight, 3D Ni-based current collector is designed to control the deposition and catalytic conversion of sulfur species toward high-performance Li-S batteries. This work provides insights on the critical role of the current collector in determining the physical state of sulfur and elucidates the correlation between sulfur state and battery performance, which will advance electrode designs in high-energy Li-S batteries.

Mesoporous hollow carbon spheres for lithium-sulfur batteries: distribution of sulfur and electrochemical performance.

Project description:Hollow carbon spheres (HCS) with a nanoporous shell are promising for the use in lithium-sulfur batteries because of the large internal void offering space for sulfur and polysulfide storage and confinement. However, there is an ongoing discussion whether the cavity is accessible for sulfur. Yet no valid proof of cavity filling has been presented, mostly due to application of unsuitable high-vacuum methods for the analysis of sulfur distribution. Here we describe the distribution of sulfur in hollow carbon spheres by powder X-ray diffraction and Raman spectroscopy along with results from scanning electron microscopy and nitrogen physisorption. The results of these methods lead to the conclusion that the cavity is not accessible for sulfur infiltration. Nevertheless, HCS/sulfur composite cathodes with areal sulfur loadings of 2.0 mg·cm-2 were investigated electrochemically, showing stable cycling performance with specific capacities of about 500 mAh·g-1 based on the mass of sulfur over 500 cycles.
