Translation and psychometric evaluation of the Chinese version of the resilience scale for children with cancer.

ABSTRACT:

Background

To test the psychometric properties of a traditional Chinese version of the Resilience Scale for Children (RS-10) and examine its factorial structure via a confirmatory factor analysis (CFA).

Methods

One hundred and eighty-six Hong Kong Chinese children with cancer were recruited in the paediatric oncology units of two public acute-care hospitals in Hong Kong to participate in this cross-sectional study. The psychometric properties of the traditional Chinese version of the RS-10 were assessed, namely its content equivalence, convergent and discriminant validity, construct validity, internal consistency and test-retest reliability.

Results

The newly translated traditional Chinese version of the RS-10 demonstrated adequate internal consistency (Cronbach's α = .83, McDonald's Ω = .80), excellent test-retest reliability (.89), good content equivalence (CVI = 96%) and appropriate convergent (r = - .52, P = .01) and discriminant validity (r = .61, P = .01). The CFA results demonstrated that there was a good fit between the factor structure of the Chinese version of the RS-10 and the observed data (χ²/df = 2.34, TLI = .951, RMSEA = .053, CFI = .962, GFI = .948, SRMR = .052), thereby confirming the construct validity of this instrument.

Conclusions

The traditional Chinese version of the RS-10 was found to be a reliable and valid tool for assessing the resilience of Hong Kong Chinese children with cancer. The newly developed traditional Chinese version of the RS-10 is an appropriate clinical research tool for evaluating the effectiveness of nursing interventions in enhancing the resilience of and promoting mental well-being in children with cancer. Project description:BackgroundSmartphone addiction is very prevalent among college students, especially Chinese college students, and it can cause many psychological problems for college students. However, there is no valid research instrument to evaluate Chinese college students' smartphone addiction.ObjectiveThis study aimed to translate the Smartphone Addiction Scale-Short Version (SAS-SV) into Chinese and evaluate the psychometric characteristics of the Smartphone Addiction Scale- Chinese Short version (SAS-CSV) among Chinese college students.MethodsThe SAS-SV was translated into Chinese using the forward-backward method. The SAS-CSV was completed by 557 Chinese college students (sample 1: n = 279; sample 2: n = 278). 62 college students were randomly selected from the 557 Chinese college students to be meas- ured twice, with an interval of two weeks. The reliability of the SAS-CSV was evaluated by internal consistency reliability and test-retest reliability, and the validity of the SAS-CSV was evaluated by content validity, structural validity, convergent validity, and discriminant validity.ResultsThe SAS-CSV presented good content validity, high internal consistency (sample 1: α = 0.829; sample 2: α = 0.881), and good test-retest reliability (ICC: 0.975; 95% CI: 0.966-0.985). After one exploratory factor analysis, three components (tolerance, withdrawal, and negative effect) with eigenvalues greater than 1 were obtained, and the cumulative variance contribution was 50.995%. The results of confirmatory factor analysis indicated that all the fit indexes reached the standard of good model fit (χ2/df = 1.883, RMSEA = 0.056, NFI = 0.954, RFI = 0.935, IFI = 0.978, TLI = 0.969, CFI = 0.978). The SAS-CSV presented good convergent validity for the factor loading of all the items ranged from 0.626 to 0.892 (higher than 0.50), the three latent variables' AVE ranged from 0.524 to 0.637 (higher than 0.50), and the three latent variables' CR ranged from 0.813 to 0.838 (higher than 0.70). Moreover, the square roots of the AVE of component 1 (tolerance), component 2 (withdrawal) and component 3 (negative effect) were 0.724, 0.778, and 0.798, respectively, higher than they were with other correlation coefficients, indicating that the SAS-CSV had good discrimination validity.ConclusionThe SAS-CSV is a valid instrument for measuring smartphone addiction among Chinese college students.

Project description:ObjectiveThis study's objectives were to translate the Health Behavior Motivation Scale (HBMS) into Chinese and verify the scale's validity and reliability among Chinese healthy adults.MethodThe HBMS scales were translated into Chinese based on Brislin's principles. The Chinese version of HBMS is created through translation, back translation, and cross-cultural adaptation. This investigation implemented the convenience sampling method to conduct a survey on 781 healthy respondents, utilizing the Chinese version of the HBMS and a general demographic questionnaire. We used AMOS (v28.0) and SPSS (v26.0) for statistical analysis. We employed test-retest reliability, split-half reliability, and internal consistency to assess the reliability of the translation questionnaire. Structure validity and content validity were used to assess validity.ResultsThe Chinese version of the Health Behavior Motivation Scale (HBMS) had a Cronbach's alpha coefficient of 0.885, and the range of Cronbach's alpha values for each dimension was 0.820-0.885. The scale's test-retest reliability was 0.824, and its split-half reliability was 0.906. Five public factors with a cumulative variance contribution of 56.527% were retrieved from the exploratory factor analysis. Moreover, the factor loading value for each item exceeded 0.4.In confirmatory factor analysis, the indicators were reported as follows: χ2/df = 1.567, GFI = 0.900, CFI = 0.952, IFI = 0.952, TLI = 0.946, AGFI = 0.881, PGFI = 0.757, PNFI = 0.789, RMSEA = 0.039, and the results of the model fit metrics were within the reference range.ConclusionThe Chinese version of the HBMS exhibits strong discrimination, validity, and reliability. The tool effectively identifies the motivation of healthy people to engage in healthy behaviors. It can be used by healthcare practitioners to assist in the development of follow-up interventions to reduce the prevalence of chronic disease in older people and the incidence of chronic disease in populations of young and middle-aged people.

Project description:ObjectivesThis study aimed to evaluate the internal consistency, reliability, convergent validity, known-group comparisons, and structural validity of the Chinese version of Fear of Intimacy with Helping Professionals (C-FIS-HP) scale in Macau.MethodsA cross-sectional design was used on a sample of 593 older people in 6 health centers. We used Chinese version of Exercise of Self-Care Agency Scale (C-ESCAS) and Morisky 4-item medication adherence scale to evaluate self-care actions and medication adherence. The internal consistency and reliability of C-FIS-HP were analyzed using the Spearman-Brown split-half reliability, Cronbach's alpha, and test-retest reliability. Convergent validity was tested the construct of C-FIS-HP and self-care actions. Known-group comparisons differentiated predefined groups in an expected direction. Two separated samples were used to test the structural validity. An exploratory factor analysis (EFA) tested the factor structure of C-FISHP using the principal axis factoring. A confirmatory factor analysis (CFA) was further conducted to confirm the factor structure constructed in the prior EFA.ResultsThe C-FIS-HP had a Spearman-Brown split-half coefficient, Cronbach's alpha, and intraclass correlation coefficient of 0.96, 0.93, and 0.96, respectively. Convergent validity was satisfactory with significantly correlations between the C-FIS-HP and C-ESCAS. C-FIS-HP to differentiate the differences between high-, moderate-, and low- medication adherence groups. EFA demonstrated a two-factor structure among 297 older people. A first-order CFA was performed to confirm the construct dimensionality of C-FIS-HP with satisfactory fit indices (NFI = 0.92; IFI = 0.95; TLI = 0.94; CFI = 0.95 and RMSEA = 0.07) among 296 older people.ConclusionsC-FIS-HP is a reliable and valid test for assessing helping relationships in older Chinese people. Health professionals can use C-FIS-HP as a clinical tool to assess the comfort level of patients in a helping relationship, and use this information to develop culturally sensitive therapeutic interventions and treatment plans. Further studies need to be conducted concerning the different psychometric properties, as well as the application of C-FIS-HP in various regions.
