Recruiting strategic human capital from MNCs-Does hiring MNC managers enable exporting in domestic firms?

ABSTRACT: Exporting is a central growth strategy for most firms and managers with international experience are instrumental for export decisions. We suggest that such managers can be hired from Multinational Corporations (MNCs). We integrate theory from strategic human capital research into models explaining export decisions. We theorize that hiring managers from MNCs increases the odds of domestic firms to start exporting and this effect depends on the similarities between hiring firms and MNCs. We hypothesize that young firms will benefit comparatively less from hiring MNC managers. In contrast, firms with internationally diverse workforces and with high degrees of hierarchical specialization will benefit the most from hiring MNC managers. We test and support these hypotheses for 474,926 domestic firms in Sweden, which we observe between 2007 and 2015.

An assessment of import tariff costs for Italian exporting firms.

Project description:Since production and trade are increasingly organized within global value chains (GVCs), assessing who effectively pays the cost of protection is not straightforward and since productive processes are internationally fragmented, quantifying the effects of trade policy requires an enhanced analytical framework that takes international input-output linkages into account to assess the implications trade costs have on competitiveness at national and sector levels. This paper defines a new synthetic measure of trade protection based on the value added in trade, capturing the effects that the tariff structure has on exporting firms that rely on imported intermediate inputs. The index, defined in a general equilibrium framework, provides a theoretically sound protection measurement in the context of GVCs. We assess trade protection by computing protection indexes at the bilateral level on both gross imports and imports to exports using the Global Trade Analysis Project computable general equilibrium model. These indexes are used to investigate the relationship between the European Union tariffs and integration of the Italian GVCs. In the case of Italy, imports to exports are overall less protected than gross imports with significant differences at the sector level. Despite the low levels of nominal protection, industrial sectors play a central role in explaining our results. EU tariffs mostly affect Italian exporting firms in the case of chemical products, wearing apparel and leather products.

Recruiting "Talent": School Choice and Teacher Hiring in New Orleans.

Project description:PurposeThe purpose of this study is to examine school leaders' preferences and practices in an environment of widespread decentralization, privatization, and school choice. In New Orleans, such reforms have been enacted citywide since Hurricane Katrina, making it an ideal site to examine what happens when policy makers lift restrictions for school leaders-and remove protections for teachers-related to teacher hiring on a large scale.Research methods/approachIn this exploratory study, I analyze qualitative data to examine school leaders' preferences and practices when recruiting teachers in New Orleans. The data for the study come from 94 interviews with principals, district leaders, and charter network leaders.FindingsSchool leaders had different conceptions of "talent" and "fit," and used a variety of strategies to recruit teachers. School districts and charter networks both supported and constrained school leaders' autonomy and recruitment practices by screening applicants or setting guidelines and criteria. Other intermediary organizations also played a role in shaping the teacher labor market. School choice also posed unique challenges for teacher recruitment.ImplicationsOverall, expansive choice policies in New Orleans appear to foster flexibility and variation in teacher hiring strategies (although not in salary), as expected in a decentralized system. However, these policies and strategies appear also to have other consequences, including greater instability or "churn," unpredictability, and a bifurcated teaching force.

Immunomodulatory Macrophages Enable E-MNC Therapy for Radiation-Induced Salivary Gland Hypofunction.

Project description:A newly developed therapy using effective-mononuclear cells (E-MNCs) is reportedly effective against radiation-damaged salivary glands (SGs) due to anti-inflammatory and revascularization effects. However, the cellular working mechanism of E-MNC therapy in SGs remains to be elucidated. In this study, E-MNCs were induced from peripheral blood mononuclear cells (PBMNCs) by culture for 5-7 days in medium supplemented with five specific recombinant proteins (5G-culture). We analyzed the anti-inflammatory characteristics of macrophage fraction of E-MNCs using a co-culture model with CD3/CD28-stimulated PBMNCs. To test therapeutic efficacy in vivo, either E-MNCs or E-MNCs depleted of CD11b-positive cells were transplanted intraglandularly into mice with radiation-damaged SGs. Following transplantation, SG function recovery and immunohistochemical analyses of harvested SGs were assessed to determine if CD11b-positive macrophages contributed to tissue regeneration. The results indicated that CD11b/CD206-positive (M2-like) macrophages were specifically induced in E-MNCs during 5G-culture, and Msr1- and galectin3-positive cells (immunomodulatory macrophages) were predominant. CD11b-positive fraction of E-MNCs significantly inhibited the expression of inflammation-related genes in CD3/CD28-stimulated PBMNCs. Transplanted E-MNCs exhibited a therapeutic effect on saliva secretion and reduced tissue fibrosis in radiation-damaged SGs, whereas E-MNCs depleted of CD11b-positive cells and radiated controls did not. Immunohistochemical analyses revealed HMGB1 phagocytosis and IGF1 secretion by CD11b/Msr1-positive macrophages from both transplanted E-MNCs and host M2-macrophages. Thus, the anti-inflammatory and tissue-regenerative effects observed in E-MNC therapy against radiation-damaged SGs can be partly explained by the immunomodulatory effect of M2-dominant macrophage fraction.

The impact of Covid-19 containment lockdowns on MSMEs in India and resilience of exporting firms.

Project description:This study uses data from a survey of micro, small, and medium enterprises in India to document the impact of Covid-19 containment lockdowns on firms, their responses, and adaptation strategies. We find that the profits and sales declined substantially for the majority of firms. Temporary closures, pay cuts, and temporary lay-offs were the key measures utilized by firms to cope with the shock. Firms did not have adequate liquidity to last beyond six months, albeit the majority expected the pandemic to be over within that period. Micro-enterprises were the most fragile. Using a retrospective panel and matching-based difference-in-differences strategy, we show that exporting firms were able to cushion themselves from the domestic market contractions resulting from the lockdown.

Biopharmaceutical pipeline funded by venture capital firms, 2014 to 2024.

Project description:Venture capital (VC) firms fund biopharmaceutical research and development (R&D) while incurring substantial financial risk. VC firms seek to invest in clinical areas with the greatest potential for financial return. Using a combination of data for clinical trials and VC investment deals between January 2014 and March 2024, we found that approximately 75% of VC investments were allocated to clinical trials studying small-molecule drugs compared to biologics or gene therapies, without substantial changes over the study period. Most of VC firms' investment in biopharmaceutical R&D was concentrated in phase 1 and phase 2 clinical trials. This trend has increased in recent years, with phase 1 trials accounting for nearly half of total deals and capital investments in 2023. VC investments were concentrated in several therapeutic areas, including cancer.

Health, Human Capital and Domestic Violence.

Project description:We treat health as a form of human capital and hypothesize that women with more human capital face stronger incentives to make costly investments with future payoffs, such as avoiding abusive partners and reducing drug use. To test this hypothesis, we exploit the unanticipated introduction of an HIV treatment, HAART, which dramatically improved HIV+ women's health. We find that after the introduction of HAART HIV+ women who experienced increases in expected longevity exhibited a decrease in domestic violence of 15% and in drug use of 1520%. We rule out confounding via secular trends using a control group of healthier women.

Leadership in a pandemic: Do more able managers keep firms out of trouble?

Project description:The Coronavirus crisis has led to unprecedented economic shocks to the corporate world and challenged how corporate management contributes to business resilience amid the pandemic. Employing a novel measure of managerial ability constructed for a large sample of U.S. publicly listed firms, we document that firms led by higher managerial ability exhibit lower stock return volatility, higher operating performance, and lower levels of default risk amid the pandemic. A difference-in-differences analysis suggests that the impact of managerial ability on firm performance is stronger during the pandemic than during the pre-pandemic period. The effect of managerial competency on corporate resiliency is more pronounced among firms that have high exposure to COVID-19. In addition, firms led by high managerial competency management are associated with higher stock liquidity and are less likely to exhibit employment, healthcare, safety, and consumer protection related violations amid the pandemic.

Strategic corporate entrepreneurship practices in financial services firms: the role of organizational factors.

Project description:The study explores a hitherto neglected area of strategic corporate entrepreneurship in services firms, the association of organizational factors with different strategic corporate entrepreneurship practices. It represents a first step toward understanding how internal organizational factors may spur different forms of strategic corporate entrepreneurship practices within services firms, especially those operating in the financial sector. Data for the study were collected through a survey study and the sample consisted of employees at a major insurance company in Sweden. The sample includes five offices placed in the north-eastern in Sweden and four offices ubicated in Stockholm. Using structural equation modelling, it was found that whereas organizational factors such as management support and reward/reinforcement have a positive effect on both incremental and discontinuous strategic corporate entrepreneurship practices, the organizational factor work discretion presents a differentiated effect. The study provides an important step toward understanding the internal factors that spur employees toward strategic corporate entrepreneurship practices in financial services firms. Moreover, the study develops a potential measure of incremental and discontinuous strategic corporate entrepreneurship practices. In terms of practical implications, the findings offer managers a solid foundation on which to base their decisions to create and improve an internal organizational environment that facilitates strategic corporate entrepreneurship practices.Supplementary informationThe online version contains supplementary material available at 10.1007/s43546-022-00306-2.

Project description:This article presents a dataset of 204 exporting firms surveyed in Indonesia to assess the internationalization and participation of enterprises in government export promotion programs (EPP). Under a resource-based view (RBV) approach, the dataset includes four dimensions of government export assistance programs, three dimensions capturing organizational resources and organizational capabilities. In addition, the survey collects data on the firms' export marketing strategies, competitiveness, and market performance. Firm-level characteristics are identified to reveal the organizational characteristics, the companies' strategic features, and market orientation. The dataset also includes obstacles the companies face across dimensions and sub-components with critical attributes. In total, the dataset includes 19 constructs of questions with 180 variables. The dataset can be used to test the firms' competitive advantage in export markets, assess the role of government programs in the firms' export performance, examine export barriers as predictors, mediators, and moderators of export performance, etc. The dataset can be used under different theoretical approaches, i.e., RBV, internationalization process, or institutional theories.

Fiscal Stimulus and Firms' Sales and Capital Expenditure During the Global Financial Crisis.

Project description:Using firm-level data from the Refinitiv Datastream Worldscope database for more than 17,253 non-financial firms in 45 advanced and emerging economies, this paper examines how fiscal stimulus interacted with sectoral business cycle sensitivity has affected firms' sales and capital expenditures during the global financial crisis. Cross-sectional analyses indicate that reductions in structural fiscal balances are associated with higher firms' sales and capital expenditures (as percentage of their total assets) in 2009. This result is obtained notably for the manufacturing and construction industries and for different regions depending on the firm performance variable. Our findings have key implications for the design of fiscal response to shocks at industry and firm levels, including during the current COVID-19 pandemic.Supplementary informationThe online version contains supplementary material available at 10.1057/s41294-021-00160-5.
