Are we behaviorally immune to COVID-19 through robots?

ABSTRACT: In the context of the health risks of the COVID-19 pandemic, tourists' choices have shifted to reflect a subconscious psychological mechanism - the behavioral immune system - that facilitates human organisms to better identify plausible threats to ones' health through environment cues. This research draws upon this theoretical lens to assess tourists' pre-trip hotel evaluation in two 2 × 2 between-subject experiments. Experiment 1 (robot vs. human) tested the service provider's effect on hotel selection evaluation through the mediation of sense of control and the moderation of pandemic risk. Experiment 2 examined this chain of relationship through the moderation of hotel type. This research contributes to the literature by underscoring the pathogen-avoidance mechanism in tourist evaluation and the peril of robotization.

Language matters: humanizing service robots through the use of language during the COVID-19 pandemic.

Project description:Service robots are emerging quickly in the marketplace (e.g., in hotels, restaurants, and healthcare), especially as COVID-19-related health concerns and social distancing guidelines have affected people's desire and ability to interact with other humans. However, while robots can increase efficiency and enable service offerings with reduced human contact, prior research shows a systematic consumer aversion toward service robots relative to human service providers. This potential dilemma raises the managerial question of how firms can overcome consumer aversion and better employ service robots. Drawing on prior research that supports the use of language for building interpersonal relationships, this research examines whether the type of language (social-oriented vs. task-oriented language) a service robot uses can improve consumer responses to and evaluations of the focal service robot, particularly in light of consumers' COVID-19-related stress. The results show that consumers respond more favorably to a service robot that uses a social-oriented (vs. task-oriented) language style, particularly when these consumers experience relatively higher levels of COVID-19-related stress. These findings contribute to initial empirical evidence in marketing for the efficacy of leveraging robots' language style to improve customer evaluations of service robots, especially under stressful circumstances. Overall, the results from two experimental studies not only point to actionable managerial implications but also to a new avenue of research on service robots that examines customer-robot interactions through the lens of language and in contexts that can be stressful for consumers (e.g., healthcare or some financial service settings).Supplementary informationThe online version contains supplementary material available at 10.1007/s11002-022-09630-x.

Unresolved Immune Dysfunction is Lethal in Both COVID-19 and non-COVID-19 Sepsis

Project description:In this prospective observational cohort study, we found transcriptional evidence that persistent immune dysfunction was associated with 28-day mortality in both COVID-19 and non-COVID-19 septic patients. COVID-19 patients had an early antiviral response but became indistinguishable on a gene expression level from non-COVID-19 sepsis patients a week later. Early treatment of COVID-19 and non-COVID-19 sepsis ICU patients should focus on pathogen control, but both patient groups also require novel immunomodulatory treatments, particularly later during ICU hospitalization, independent of admission diagnosis. Some T1 samples were uploaded in GSE185263 and were not re-uploaded in this series.

Immune dysfunction in COVID-19 Associated Mucormycosis

Project description:The coronavirus pandemic (COVID-19) is associated with secondary bacterial and fungal infections globally. In India, inappropriate use of glucocorticoids, high prevalence of diabetes mellitus and a conducive environment for fungal growth are considered as the main factors for increased incidence of COVID-19 associated mucormycosis (CAM). Few cases of CAM without steroid abuse and normal blood glucose levels were also reported during the pandemic. This study was designed to explore whether altered immune responses due to severe COVID-19 infection predisposes towards development of mucormycosis. The global transcriptome profiling of monocytes and granulocytic cells derived from CAM, Mucormycosis, COVID-19 and healthy control groups were performed to identify the differentially expressed genes (DEGs) involved in dysregulated host immune response towards respective diseased and healthy conditions.

Predicting Covid-19 pandemic waves with biologically and behaviorally informed universal differential equations.

Project description:During the COVID-19 pandemic, it became clear that pandemic waves and population responses were locked in a mutual feedback loop in a classic example of a coupled behavior-disease system. We demonstrate for the first time that universal differential equation (UDE) models are able to extract this interplay from data. We develop a UDE model for COVID-19 and test its ability to make predictions of second pandemic waves. We find that UDEs are capable of learning coupled behavior-disease dynamics and predicting second waves in a variety of populations, provided they are supplied with learning biases describing simple assumptions about disease transmission and population response. Though not yet suitable for deployment as a policy-guiding tool, our results demonstrate potential benefits, drawbacks, and useful techniques when applying universal differential equations to coupled systems.

Human plasma proteome immune response to COVID-19

Project description:In this study, we investigated immune responses in a prospective cohort of hospitalized COVID-19 patients (derivation cohort, DC; n = 126) during the spring of 2020. Plasma samples were collected within four days of admission to measure a panel of innate and complement system immune markers. From a subset of this cohort (n = 80), we performed plasma proteomics and developed a predictive survival model based on proteins differentially expressed between survivors (n = 60) and non-survivors (n = 20). Logistic regression analyses were employed to evaluate the predictive value of these biomarkers for 30-day mortality. The developed proteomic prediction model and the regression analyses were subsequently validated using an independent cohort of hospitalized COVID-19 patients (validation cohort, VC) from the autumn/winter of 2020, who received treatment with remdesivir and dexamethasone.

Immune signatures underlying post-acute COVID-19 lung sequelae

Project description:Although a substantial proportion of severe COVID-19 pneumonia survivors exhibit long-term pulmonary sequalae, the underlying mechanisms or associated local and systemic immune correlates are not known. Here, we have performed high dimensional characterization of the pathophysiological and immune traits of aged COVID-19 convalescents, and correlated the local and systemic immune profiles with pulmonary function and lung imaging. In this cohort of aged COVID-19 convalescents, chronic lung impairment was accompanied by persistent systemic inflammation and respiratory immune alterations. Detailed evaluation of the lung immune compartment revealed dysregulated respiratory CD8+ T cell responses that likely underlie the impaired lung function following acute COVID-19 during aging. Single cell transcriptomic analysis identified the potential pathogenic subsets of respiratory CD8+ T cells causing persistent tissue conditions following COVID-19. Our results have revealed key pathophysiological and immune traits that support the development of lung sequelae following SARS-CoV2 pneumonia during aging, with implications for the treatment of chronic COVID-19 symptoms.
