City vs. Town residents' place attachment, perceptions and support for tourism development in a linear World Cultural Heritage Site.

ABSTRACT: This study examines local residents' place attachment (PA) to the city or town they live and investigates how this attachment influences their perceptions and support for tourism development (ST), as well as comparing the differences of these relationships among the city and town residents in a linear World Heritage Site (WHS) setting. Structural equation model was used to analyze samples of 226 city residents and 235 town residents along the Grand Canal Yangzhou Section, China. The findings suggested that residents' PA is positively correlated their ST. Results also suggested that the PA-ST effect is partially mediated by residents' positive perceptions in the city area while fully mediated by residents' positive and negative perceptions in the town areas. This study could help local governments make heritage development and management policies accordingly for cities and towns along the Grand Canal area.

Antecedents of Residents' Pro-tourism Behavioral Intention: Place Image, Place Attachment, and Attitude.

Project description:Few prior studies have investigated place image from the residents' perspective, how this and residents' place attachment influence attitude to tourism, and consequent reactions. Accordingly, this study aims to develop a model for local residents' pro-tourism behavioral intention and to discover the relationships between constructs. Analysis was based on a sample of 370 residents in Huangshan City, China. Results indicate that residents' attitude to tourism positively affects their pro-tourism behavioral intention. Residents' place image is found to positively relate to place attachment and attitude to tourism, while place attachment is also related to attitude and pro-tourism behavioral intention. In addition, attitude to tourism mediates place image's and place attachment's respective relationships with pro-tourism behavioral intention. Lastly, place image indirectly impacts residents' attitude to tourism and pro-tourism behavioral intention through place attachment. However, the positive relationship between place image and pro-tourism behavioral intention is not supported. Theoretical and practical implications are discussed.

Sustainable tourism development for traditional Chinese drama's intangible cultural heritage.

Project description:This study establishes an expert-driven evaluation system to assess the sustainable tourism development of drama-related intangible cultural heritage in China. Utilizing the Saaty 1-9 scale and hierarchical analysis method, 52 experts determined indicator weights and current development levels. Four dimensions are evaluated: humanistic value, project quality, tourism development, and sustainability. Results reveal humanistic value as most vital at 41.70 % weight. Secondary factors are project quality (29.89 %), tourism development (20.87 %), and sustainability (7.54 %). Aesthetic value, dissemination degree, and location conditions proved to the crucial tourism indicators. The ideological value of drama is paramount, alongside visibility and climate factors. The evaluation demonstrated strong preservation of humanistic value but deficiencies in tourism development, especially regarding infrastructure. Key recommendations include balancing preservation, dissemination, and innovation; emphasizing ideological value, visibility, and climate suitability; maintaining humanistic diversity; and improving site infrastructure. Further testing of evaluation indicators across periods is warranted alongside examining green revitalization potential. This assessment, guided by experts, offers a thorough framework for the sustainable development and preservation of the precious intangible heritage embodied in Chinese drama.

Extending and adapting the concept of quality management for museums and cultural heritage attractions: A comparative study of southern European cultural heritage managers' perceptions.

Project description:Quality in cultural heritage attractions is mainly approached from the visitors' satisfaction perspective, and the literature does not contain a clear definition of quality in the management of cultural heritage sites open to the public. The present study aims to reframe this trend. By way of theoretical contribution, we propose a definition of quality in cultural heritage attractions management based on dimensions such as the capacity of preserving the cultural assets, the ability to communicate effectively their significance, the quality of commodification for visitor use, and the ability to boost intercultural competence and promote intercultural dialogue. Based on the above, an empirical, qualitative study was conducted on the cultural heritage managers' current perceptions of quality. The results suggest that a profound asymmetry exists among practitioners' opinions and practices, and four types of cultural heritage managers were defined with regard to their perception of quality: Reactionary, Reticent, Pragmatic, Enthusiastic.

Evaluation of attraction and spatial pattern analysis of world cultural and natural heritage tourism resources in China.

Project description:The attraction of tourism resources is very important to promote the sustainable development of tourism industry. This study takes China's world cultural and natural heritage as the research object, and constructs an attractiveness evaluation system for China's world cultural and natural heritage tourism resources by collecting user feedback data from three major travel OTA platforms. At the same time, ArcGIS 10.7 software was used for spatial autocorrelation analysis and kernel density analysis to explore the spatial distribution pattern of tourism resource attraction. The results show that China's world cultural and natural heritage can be subdivided into 5 main categories and 10 sub-categories. From the perspective of spatial aggregation, only the Moran's I index of tourist resource points showing a significant spatial aggregation feature. This study is helpful to reveal the weaknesses of tourism resource points and provide reference for sustainable development of attraction and optimization of tourism planning and management.

An empirical application of the consumer-based authenticity model in heritage tourism of the George Town historic district, Penang, Malaysia.

Project description:The primary objective of this paper is to investigate the specific application of the Consumer-based Model of Authenticity (C-BA) in historic districts. The paper building upon the C-BA model and examines the direct effects between the variables, as well as the mediating role of tourists' involvement, and place attachment in the connection between, authenticity (encompassing object-based authenticity and existential authenticity) and revisit intention. This study applied the C-BA model to the context of heritage tourism within a historic district. The analysis utilized structural equation modelling and involved 394 samples. The findings indicate that authenticity, influences tourists' intentions to return from a dual perspective. The results reveal that object-based authenticity mediates the relationship between tourists' involvement and satisfaction, while existential authenticity mediates the connection between place attachment and satisfaction. The study suggests that stakeholders ought to prioritize the preservation of the objective authenticity of the historic district and the provision of high-quality activity experiences.

Cultural heritage site selection characteristics and the impact of the natural environment in Jinan city, China.

Project description:This study aims to explore the spatial distribution and site selection characteristics of cultural heritage sites, as well as the impact of the natural environment on the site's location. A total of 448 cultural heritage sites in Jinan City (Shandong province), which have been listed as key cultural relic protection units from before the Qin Dynasty to after the Qing Dynasty (ca. 7500 BCE-present), were analyzed using spatial analysis tools in ArcGIS 10.6 software. The main research findings are as follows: (1) cultural heritage sites have a wide distribution and few cores and are characterized by spatial agglomeration and the formation of a single core area around the Lixia District; (2) in terms of spatiotemporal evolution, cultural heritage sites follow a "diffusion-aggregation-diffusion-aggregation" trend, exhibiting a "southwest-northeast-northwest" trajectory, with characteristics of continuity and a centripetal pattern; and (3) cultural heritage sites are mainly distributed in alluvial plains with heights ranging from 2.6-100 m, slopes ranging from 0-5°, and distances ≤ 1 km from water systems. The more recent the construction year of the cultural heritage site is to modern times, the more closely its type is to production and living, and the more relevant it is to the natural environment.

Internal medicine residents' perceptions of cross-cultural training. Barriers, needs, and educational recommendations.

Project description:BackgroundPhysicians increasingly face the challenge of managing clinical encounters with patients from a range of cultural backgrounds. Despite widespread interest in cross-cultural care, little is known about resident physicians' perceptions of what will best enable them to provide quality care to diverse patient populations.ObjectivesTo assess medicine residents' (1) perceptions of cross-cultural care, (2) barriers to care, and (3) training experiences and recommendations.Design, setting, and patientsQualitative individual interviews were conducted with 26 third-year medicine residents at Massachusetts General Hospital in Boston (response rate=87%). Interviews were recorded, transcribed, and analyzed.ResultsDespite significant interest in cross-cultural care, almost all of the residents reported very little training during residency. Most had gained cross-cultural skills through informal learning. A few were skeptical about formal training, and some expressed concern that it is impossible to understand every culture. Challenges to the delivery of cross-cultural care included managing patients with limited English proficiency, who involve family in critical decision making, and who have beliefs about disease that vary from the biomedical model. Residents cited many implications to these barriers, ranging from negatively impacting the patient-physician relationship to compromised care. Training recommendations included making changes to the educational climate and informal and formal training mechanisms.ConclusionsIf cross-cultural education is to be successful, it must take into account residents' perspectives and be focused on overcoming residents' cited barriers. It is important to convey that cross-cultural education is a set of skills that can be taught and applied, in a time-efficient manner, rather than requiring an insurmountable knowledge base.

Ecological Risk Assessment and Protection Zone Identification for Linear Cultural Heritage: A Case Study of the Ming Great Wall.

Project description:Ecological risk assessment is an important part of the sustainable development of World Heritage. The Ming Great Wall Heritage (MGWH) plays an important role in World Heritage conservation as a representative of large linear heritage, yet its ecological risks have not received much attention. This study assessed the ecological risk of MGWH based on simultaneous consideration of spatial heterogeneity and autocorrelation of geographic factors, and four protection zones were further identified from the perspective of preservation status and risk by using GeoDetector, principal component analysis and bivariate autocorrelation. The results showed that there were statistically significant differences in the preservation status of MGWH at different elevations. Based on this assessed ecological risk, it was found that 63.49% of MGWH grids were in the low to medium risk, while the highest risk areas (16.61%) were mainly concentrated in lower (200-500 m) and medium (500-1000 m) elevation. As elevation increased, the dominant factor of ecological risk shifted from human factors to natural factors and the main ecological risk showed a trend of increasing and then decreasing with increasing elevation. In addition, four types of risk protection zones (i.e., Protection-Restricted, Restoration-Moderate exploited, Restoration-Restricted and Protection-Moderate exploited) and policy suggestions were identified in this study from the perspectives of conservation, restoration and development, respectively. Future ecological protection of the MGWH should be based on the principle of "cultural heritage protection first", with restricted development and use (e.g., tourism and education) and enhanced ecological restoration and environmental management of the surrounding area. This study provides references for the risk assessment of the cultural heritage at a large spatial scale, which is conducive to the maintenance and improvement of heritage value.
