Bias-corrected monthly precipitation data over South Siberia for 1979-2019.

ABSTRACT: Bias-Corrected Precipitation data over South Siberia (CPSS) contains monthly precipitation data for the area within the coordinates 50-65 N, 60-120 E for the period from January 1979 to December 2019. CPSS data were combined from monthly total precipitation data from ERA5 reanalysis European Centre for Medium-Range Weather Forecasts and precipitation data records from ground weather stations. The ERA5 data were scaled according to the derived scale coefficient. The linear scaling coefficient for each month and weather station were calculated and extrapolated to the study area using the ordinary kriging method. Data spatial resolution is 0.25° in the latitude and 0.25° in the longitude. CPSS reproduces the spatial variability of precipitation more precisely than can be done from the weather station observation network. The CPSS dataset will be useful for the study of extreme precipitation events and allow for more accurate hydrologic risk assessment at a regional level based on climate model results.

Very high resolution, altitude-corrected, TMPA-based monthly satellite precipitation product over the CONUS.

Project description:The Tropical Rainfall Measuring Mission (TRMM) Multisatellite Precipitation Analysis (TMPA) product provided over 17 years of gridded precipitation datasets. However, the accuracy and spatial resolution of TMPA limits the applicability in hydrometeorological applications. We present a dataset that enhances the accuracy and spatial resolution of the TMPA monthly product (3B43). We resample the TMPA data to a 1 km grid and apply a correction function derived from the Parameter-elevation Regressions on Independent Slopes Model (PRISM) to reduce bias in the data. We confirm a linear relationship between bias and elevation above 1,500 meters where TMPA underestimates measured precipitation, providing a proof-of-concept of how simple linear scaling can be used to augment existing satellite datasets. The result of the correction is the High-Resolution Altitude-Corrected Precipitation product (HRAC-Precip) for the CONUS. Using 9,200 precipitation stations from the Global Historical Climatology Network (GHCN), we compare the accuracy of TMPA 3B43 versus the new HRAC-Precip product. The results show an improvement of the mean absolute error of 12.98% on average.

Bias-corrected high-resolution temperature and precipitation projections for Canada.

Project description:High-resolution precipitation and temperature projections are indispensable for informed decision-making, risk assessment, and planning. Here, we have developed an extensive database (SPQM-CMIP6-CAN) of high-resolution (0.1°) precipitation and temperature projections extending till 2100 at a daily scale for Canada. We employed a novel Semi-Parametric Quantile Mapping (SPQM) methodology to bias-correct the Coupled Model Intercomparison Project, Phase-6 (CMIP6) projections for four Shared Socio-economic Pathways. SPQM is simple, yet robust, in reproducing the observed marginal properties, trends, and variability according to future scenarios, while maintaining a smooth transition from observations to projected simulations. The SPQM-CMIP6-CAN database encompasses 693 simulations derived from 34 diverse climate models for precipitation. Similarly, for temperature projections, our database comprises 581 simulations from 27 climate models. These projections are valuable for hydrological, environmental, and ecological studies, offering a comprehensive resource for analyses within these domains. Furthermore, these projections serve as a vital tool for the quantification of uncertainties arising from climate models, their variant configurations, and future scenarios.

Evaluation and projection of precipitation extremes under 1.5°C and 2.0°C GWLs over China using bias-corrected CMIP6 models.

Project description:China is facing an increasing challenge from severe precipitation-related extremes with accelerating global warming. In this study, using a bias-corrected CMIP6 ensemble, future responses of precipitation extreme indices at 1.5°C and 2.0°C global warming levels (GWLs) under the SSP245, SSP370 and SSP585 scenarios are investigated. Despite different change magnitudes, extreme precipitation events will be more frequent and more intense over China as a whole under higher emissions and GWLs. The increase in annual total precipitation could attribute to a sharp increase in the intensity and days of very heavy precipitation in future global warming scenarios. Limiting global warming to 1.5°C and low emission pathways (i.e., SSP245) instead of 2°C and high emission pathways (i.e., SSP585) would have substantial benefits for China in terms of reducing occurrences of extreme precipitation events.

Southward shift of precipitation extremes over south Asia: Evidences from CORDEX data.

Project description:Analysis of observed Indian Summer Monsoon precipitation reveals more increase in extreme precipitation (in terms of its magnitude) over south India compared to north and central India during 1971-2017 (base period: 1930-1970). In the future, analysis of precipitation from the Coordinated Regional Downscaling Experiment indicates a southward shift of precipitation extremes over South Asia. For instance, the Arabian Sea, south India, Myanmar, Thailand, and Malaysia are expected to have the maximum increase (~18.5 mm/day for RCP8.5 scenario) in mean extreme precipitation (average precipitation for the days with more than 99th percentile of daily precipitation). However, north and central India and Tibetan Plateau show relatively less increase (~2.7 mm/day for RCP8.5 scenario). Analysis of air temperature at 850 mb and precipitable water (RCP4.5 and RCP8.5) indicates an intensification of Indian Ocean Dipole in future, which will enhance the monsoon throughout India. Moisture flux and convergence analysis (at 850 mb) show a future change of the direction of south-west monsoon winds towards the east over the Indian Ocean. These changes will intensify the observed contrast in extreme precipitation between south and north India, and cause more extreme precipitation events in the countries like Myanmar, Thailand, Malaysia, etc.

Bias-corrected CMIP6 global dataset for dynamical downscaling of the historical and future climate (1979-2100).

Project description:Dynamical downscaling is an important approach to obtaining fine-scale weather and climate information. However, dynamical downscaling simulations are often degraded by biases in the large-scale forcing itself. We constructed a bias-corrected global dataset based on 18 models from the Coupled Model Intercomparison Project Phase 6 (CMIP6) and the European Centre for Medium-Range Weather Forecasts Reanalysis 5 (ERA5) dataset. The bias-corrected data have an ERA5-based mean climate and interannual variance, but with a non-linear trend from the ensemble mean of the 18 CMIP6 models. The dataset spans the historical time period 1979-2014 and future scenarios (SSP245 and SSP585) for 2015-2100 with a horizontal grid spacing of (1.25° × 1.25°) at six-hourly intervals. Our evaluation suggests that the bias-corrected data are of better quality than the individual CMIP6 models in terms of the climatological mean, interannual variance and extreme events. This dataset will be useful for dynamical downscaling projections of the Earth's future climate, atmospheric environment, hydrology, agriculture, wind power, etc.

Project description:A bias-corrected dataset containing daily meteorological data over the Qinghai-Tibet Plateau has been generated using a trend-preserving bias correction, the Inter-Sectoral Impact Model Intercomparison Project (ISI-MIP) approach, with a high-quality gridded meteorological dataset based on ground observations (CN05.1). The dataset contains daily bias-corrected values of maximum/minimum near-surface air temperature, precipitation and mean near-surface wind speed from 15 models from the Fifth Phase of the Coupled Model Intercomparison Project (CMIP5) and a downscaled high-resolution dataset (NEX-GDDP), based on CMIP5 models, over the Qinghai-Tibet Plateau (QTP) during 1986-2095. This dataset provides an important reference for the study of future climate change and its impacts in the Qinghai-Tibet Plateau region.

Bias-corrected climate projections for South Asia from Coupled Model Intercomparison Project-6.

Project description:Climate change is likely to pose enormous challenges for agriculture, water resources, infrastructure, and livelihood of millions of people living in South Asia. Here, we develop daily bias-corrected data of precipitation, maximum and minimum temperatures at 0.25° spatial resolution for South Asia (India, Pakistan, Bangladesh, Nepal, Bhutan, and Sri Lanka) and 18 river basins located in the Indian sub-continent. The bias-corrected dataset is developed using Empirical Quantile Mapping (EQM) for the historic (1951-2014) and projected (2015-2100) climate for the four scenarios (SSP126, SSP245, SSP370, SSP585) using output from 13 General Circulation Models (GCMs) from Coupled Model Intercomparison Project-6 (CMIP6). The bias-corrected dataset was evaluated against the observations for both mean and extremes of precipitation, maximum and minimum temperatures. Bias corrected projections from 13 CMIP6-GCMs project a warmer (3-5°C) and wetter (13-30%) climate in South Asia in the 21st century. The bias-corrected projections from CMIP6-GCMs can be used for climate change impact assessment in South Asia and hydrologic impact assessment in the sub-continental river basins.

Antarctic ice mass variations from 1979 to 2017 driven by anomalous precipitation accumulation.

Project description:Antarctic ice mass balance is determined by precipitation and ice discharge, and understanding their relative contributions to contemporary Antarctic ice mass change is important to project future ice mass loss and resulting sea level rise. There has been evidence that anomalous precipitation affects Antarctic ice mass loss estimates, and thus the precipitation contribution should be understood and considered in future projections. In this study, we revisit changes in Antarctic ice mass over recent decades and examine precipitation contributions over this period. We show that accumulated (time-integrated) precipitation explains most inter-annual anomalies of Antarctic ice mass change during the GRACE period (2003-2017). From 1979 to 2017, accumulated Antarctic precipitation contributes to significant ice mass loss acceleration in the Pacific sector and deceleration in the Atlantic-Indian Sectors, forming a bi-polar spatial pattern. Principal component analysis reveals that such a bi-polar pattern is likely modulated by the Southern Annular Mode (SAM). We also find that recent ice mass loss acceleration in 2007 is related to a variation in precipitation accumulation. Overall ice discharge has accelerated at a steady rate since 1992, but has not seen a recent abrupt increase.

Southern Hemisphere forcing of South Asian monsoon precipitation over the past ~1 million years.

Project description:The orbital-scale timing of South Asian monsoon (SAM) precipitation is poorly understood. Here we present new SST and seawater δ18O (δ18Osw) records from the Bay of Bengal, the core convective region of the South Asian monsoon, over the past 1 million years. Our records reveal that SAM precipitation peaked in the precession band ~9 kyrs after Northern Hemisphere summer insolation maxima, in phase with records of SAM winds in the Arabian Sea and eastern Indian Ocean. Precession-band variance, however, accounts for ~30% of the total variance of SAM precipitation while it was either absent or dominant in records of the East Asian monsoon (EAM). This and the observation that SAM precipitation was phase locked with obliquity minima and was sensitive to Southern Hemisphere warming provides clear evidence that SAM and EAM precipitation responded differently to orbital forcing and highlights the importance of internal processes forcing monsoon variability.

PPDIST, global 0.1° daily and 3-hourly precipitation probability distribution climatologies for 1979-2018.

Project description:We introduce the Precipitation Probability DISTribution (PPDIST) dataset, a collection of global high-resolution (0.1°) observation-based climatologies (1979-2018) of the occurrence and peak intensity of precipitation (P) at daily and 3-hourly time-scales. The climatologies were produced using neural networks trained with daily P observations from 93,138 gauges and hourly P observations (resampled to 3-hourly) from 11,881 gauges worldwide. Mean validation coefficient of determination (R2) values ranged from 0.76 to 0.80 for the daily P occurrence indices, and from 0.44 to 0.84 for the daily peak P intensity indices. The neural networks performed significantly better than current state-of-the-art reanalysis (ERA5) and satellite (IMERG) products for all P indices. Using a 0.1 mm 3 h-1 threshold, P was estimated to occur 12.2%, 7.4%, and 14.3% of the time, on average, over the global, land, and ocean domains, respectively. The highest P intensities were found over parts of Central America, India, and Southeast Asia, along the western equatorial coast of Africa, and in the intertropical convergence zone.
