Data for modeling the height and diameter of Pinus merkusii and P. michoacana in Zambia.

ABSTRACT: Data on tree height and diameter of non-native Pinus merkusii (Jung. & de Vriese) and Pinus michoacana (Martinez) collected from Zambia's non-native forest plantations is presented here. A total of 1542 and 1883 pairs of height and diameter datasets for developing and testing the models are presented, respectively. During a five-year interval forest inventories, data collected supported the development of allometric relationships between height and diameter for the country's two species. Datasets are intended to be reused for various purposes to enhance the understanding of the tree height and diameter relationships of new and existing planted non-native species in Zambia. Project description:Forest inventories in plantations of non-native trees are conducted every five years in Zambia. Characteristics of data collected through these inventories are presented here. The data includes diameter at breast height (d), total tree height (h) and rotation categories for trees sampled. This data supported the development of robust h-d models for planted Pinus kesiya in the country. We have also presented graphical visualization of the composition and trends of the data by site and rotation. Datasets were filtered and cleaned and are ready to be used for other purposes in order to improve understanding of P. kesiya growth. For more insight please see "Modeling the height-diameter relationship of planted Pinus kesiya in Zambia" (Ng'andwe et al., 2019).

Tree-ring chronology data of non-native Pinus kesiya (Royle ex Gordon) in Zambia.

Project description:Although Pinus kesiya (Royle ex Gordon) is endemic to South Asia, where it grows naturally in pure stands, its growth trajectory in Zambia has not been evaluated. It is estimated that half of the P. kesiya plantation total area is found close to the Copper mine smelters, and the other half is in remote locations approximately 30 km away from the mining activities. Variation in tree growth of non-native P. kesiya forests between these locations in Zambia has been observed, but the causes are unknown. We tested the hypotheses that (i) P. kesiya annual tree-rings are cross-datable, (ii) the signals and noise in the growth ring patterns are modulated by variations in precipitation, temperature, solar radiation, and site conditions. We collected data from 67 trees growing close to the emission source and also in the location 30 km away. Site-specific tree ring-width data was collected and chronology built for P. kesiya. We present ring-width chronology data that may be used to infer the radial growth periodicity of P. keskya at each site. The re-use potential of the data presented includes developing carbon sequestration, yield, and growth models and assessing forest resilience to climate change. It is also intended to enhance the understanding of tree growth and productivity dynamics of non-native pine species. Estimating tree height-diameter models with the Bayesian method.

Project description:Six candidate height-diameter models were used to analyze the height-diameter relationships. The common methods for estimating the height-diameter models have taken the classical (frequentist) approach based on the frequency interpretation of probability, for example, the nonlinear least squares method (NLS) and the maximum likelihood method (ML). The Bayesian method has an exclusive advantage compared with classical method that the parameters to be estimated are regarded as random variables. In this study, the classical and Bayesian methods were used to estimate six height-diameter models, respectively. Both the classical method and Bayesian method showed that the Weibull model was the "best" model using data1. In addition, based on the Weibull model, data2 was used for comparing Bayesian method with informative priors with uninformative priors and classical method. The results showed that the improvement in prediction accuracy with Bayesian method led to narrower confidence bands of predicted value in comparison to that for the classical method, and the credible bands of parameters with informative priors were also narrower than uninformative priors and classical method. The estimated posterior distributions for parameters can be set as new priors in estimating the parameters using data2.

Height-diameter allometry for tropical forest in northern Amazonia.

Project description:Height measurements are essential to manage and monitor forest biomass and carbon stocks. However, accurate estimation of this variable in tropical ecosystems is still difficult due to species heterogeneity and environmental variability. In this article, we compare and discuss six nonlinear allometric models parameterized at different scales (local, regional and pantropical). We also evaluate the height measurements obtained in the field by the hypsometer when compared with the true tree height. We used a dataset composed of 180 harvested trees in two distinct areas located in the Amapá State. The functional form of the Weibull model was the best local model, showing similar performance to the pantropical model. The inaccuracy detected in the hypsometer estimates reinforces the importance of incorporating new technologies in measuring individual tree heights. Establishing accurate allometric models requires knowledge of ecophysiological and environmental processes that govern vegetation dynamics and tree height growth. It is essential to investigate the influence of different species and ecological gradients on the diameter/height ratio.

Computational identification of genes modulating stem height-diameter allometry.

Project description:The developmental variation in stem height with respect to stem diameter is related to a broad range of ecological and evolutionary phenomena in trees, but the underlying genetic basis of this variation remains elusive. We implement a dynamic statistical model, functional mapping, to formulate a general procedure for the computational identification of quantitative trait loci (QTLs) that control stem height-diameter allometry during development. Functional mapping integrates the biological principles underlying trait formation and development into the association analysis of DNA genotype and endpoint phenotype, thus providing an incentive for understanding the mechanistic interplay between genes and development. Built on the basic tenet of functional mapping, we explore two core ecological scenarios of how stem height and stem diameter covary in response to environmental stimuli: (i) trees pioneer sunlit space by allocating more growth to stem height than diameter and (ii) trees maintain their competitive advantage through an inverse pattern. The model is equipped to characterize 'pioneering' QTLs (piQTLs) and 'maintaining' QTLs (miQTLs) which modulate these two ecological scenarios, respectively. In a practical application to a mapping population of full-sib hybrids derived from two Populus species, the model has well proven its versatility by identifying several piQTLs that promote height growth at a cost of diameter growth and several miQTLs that benefit radial growth at a cost of height growth. Judicious application of functional mapping may lead to improved strategies for studying the genetic control of the formation mechanisms underlying trade-offs among quantities of assimilates allocated to different growth parts.

Diameter, height and species of 42 million trees in three European landscapes generated from field data and airborne laser scanning data.

Project description:Ecology and forestry sciences are using an increasing amount of data to address a wide variety of technical and research questions at the local, continental and global scales. However, one type of data remains rare: fine-grain descriptions of large landscapes. Yet, this type of data could help address the scaling issues in ecology and could prove useful for testing forest management strategies and accurately predicting the dynamics of ecosystem services. Here we present three datasets describing three large European landscapes in France, Poland and Slovenia down to the tree level. Tree diameter, height and species data were generated combining field data, vegetation maps and airborne laser scanning (ALS) data following an area-based approach. Together, these landscapes cover more than 100 000 ha and consist of more than 42 million trees of 51 different species. Alongside the data, we provide here a simple method to produce high-resolution descriptions of large landscapes using increasingly available data: inventory and ALS data. We carried out an in-depth evaluation of our workflow including, among other analyses, a leave-one-out cross validation. Overall, the landscapes we generated are in good agreement with the landscapes they aim to reproduce. In the most favourable conditions, the root mean square error (RMSE) of stand basal area (BA) and mean quadratic diameter (Dg) predictions were respectively 5.4 m 2.ha -1 and 3.9 cm, and the generated main species corresponded to the observed main species in 76.2% of cases.

Relationships of tree height and diameter at breast height revisited: analyses of stem growth using 20-year data of an even-aged Chamaecyparis obtusa stand.

Project description:Stem diameter at breast height (DBH) and tree height (H) are commonly used measures of tree growth. We examined patterns of height growth and diameter growth along a stem using a 20-year record of an even-aged hinoki cypress (Chamaecyparis obtusa (Siebold & Zucc.) Endl.) stand. In the region of the stem below the crown (except for the butt swell), diameter growth rates (ΔD) at different heights tended to increase slightly from breast height upwards. This increasing trend was pronounced in suppressed trees, but not as much as the variation in ΔD among individual trees. Hence, ΔD below the crown can be regarded as generally being represented by the DBH growth rate (ΔDBH) of a tree. Accordingly, the growth rate of the stem cross-sectional area increased along the stem upwards in suppressed trees, but decreased in dominant trees. The stem diameter just below the crown base (D(CB)), the square of which is an index of the amount of leaves on a tree, was an important factor affecting ΔDBH. D(CB) also had a strong positive relationship with crown length. Hence, long-term changes in the D(CB) of a tree were associated with long-term changes in crown length, determined by the balance between the height growth rate (ΔH) and the rising rate of the crown base (ΔH(CB)). Within the crown, ΔD's were generally greater than the rates below the crown. Even dying trees (ΔD ≈ 0 below the crown) maintained ΔD > 0 within the crown and ΔH > 0 until about 5 years before death. This growth within the crown may be related to the need to produce new leaves to compensate for leaves lost owing to the longevity of the lower crown. These results explain the different time trajectories in DBH-H relationships among individual trees, and also the long-term changes in the DBH-H relationships. The view that a rise in the crown base is strongly related to leaf turnover helps to interpret DBH-H relationships.

Greater Height Is Associated with a Larger Carotid Lumen Diameter.

Project description:Background: Previous studies link tall stature with a reduced ischemic stroke risk. One theory posits that tall people have larger cerebral artery lumens and therefore have a lower plaque occlusion risk than those who are short. Previous studies have not critically evaluated the associations between height and cerebral artery structure independent of confounding factors. Methods: The hypothesis linking stature with cerebral artery lumen size was tested in 231 adults by measuring the associations between height and common carotid artery diameter (CCAD) and intima-media thickness (IMT) after controlling for recognized vascular influencing factors (e.g., adiposity, blood pressure, plasma lipids, etc.). Results: Height remained a significant CCAD predictor across all developed multiple regression models. These models predict a ~0.03 mm increase in CCAD for each 1-cm increase in height in this sample. This magnitude of CCAD increase with height represents over a 60% enlargement of the artery's lumen area across adults varying in stature from short (150 cm) to tall (200 cm). By contrast, IMT was non-significantly correlated with height across all developed regression models. Conclusions: People who are tall have a larger absolute CCAD than people who are short, while IMT is independent of stature. These observations potentially add to the growing cardiovascular literature aimed at explaining the lower risk of ischemic strokes in tall people.

Impact of climate factors on height growth of Pinus sylvestris var. mongolica.

Project description:Tree height growth is sensitive to climate change; therefore, incorporating climate factors into tree height prediction models can improve our understanding of this relationship and provide a scientific basis for plantation management under climate change conditions. Mongolian pine (Pinus sylvestris var. mongolica) is one of the most important afforestation species in Three-North Regions in China. Yet our knowledge on the relationship between height growth and climate for Mongolian pine is limited. Based on survey data for the dominant height of Mongolian pine and climate data from meteorological station, a mixed-effects Chapman-Richards model (including climate factors and random parameters) was used to study the effects of climate factors on the height growth of Mongolian pine in Zhanggutai sandy land, Northeast China. The results showed that precipitation had a delayed effect on the tree height growth. Generally, tree heights increased with increasing mean temperature in May and precipitation from October to April and decreased with increasing precipitation in the previous growing season. The model could effectively predict the dominant height growth of Mongolian pine under varying climate, which could help in further understanding the relationship between climate and height growth of Mongolian pine in semiarid areas of China.

Modeling and evaluating site and provenance variation in height-diameter relationships for Betula alnoides Buch.-Ham. ex D. Don in southern China.

Project description:Tree height (H) and stem diameter at breast height (DBH) (H-D) relationship is correlated with timber yield and quality as well as stability of forest and is crucial in forest management and genetic breeding. It is influenced by not only environmental factors such as site quality and climate factors but also genetic control that is mostly neglected. A dataset of H and DBH of 25 provenances of Betula alnoides Buch.-Ham. ex D. Don at four sites was used to model the H-D relationship. The dummy variable nonliner mixed-effect equations were applied to evaluate the effects of sites and provenances on variations of the H-D relationship and to select superior provenances of B. alnoides. Weibull equation was selected as the base model for the H-D relationship. The sites affected asymptotes of the H-D curves, and the provenance effect on asymptotes of the H-D curves varied across sites. Taking above-average DBH and lower asymptote of the H-D curves as indicators, five excellent provenances were screened out at each site with a rate of 20%. Their selection gains of individual volume ranged from 1.99% to 29.81%, and their asymptote parameter (kj) and H-D ratio were 7.17%-486.05% and 3.07-4.72% lower than the relevant total means at four sites, respectively. Genetic selection based on the H-D relationship could promote selection efficiency of excellent germplasms and was beneficial for the large-sized timber production of B. alnoides.
