Control of the Induced Handedness of Helical Nanofilaments Employing Cholesteric Liquid Crystal Fields.

ABSTRACT: In this paper, a simple and powerful method to control the induced handedness of helical nanofilaments (HNFs) is presented. The nanofilaments are formed by achiral bent-core liquid crystal molecules employing a cholesteric liquid crystal field obtained by doping a rod-like nematogen with a chiral dopant. Homochiral helical nanofilaments are formed in the nanophase-separated helical nanofilament/cholesteric phase from a mixture with a cholesteric phase. This cholesteric phase forms at a temperature higher than the temperature at which the helical nanofilament in a bent-core molecule appears. Under such conditions, the cholesteric liquid crystal field acts as a driving force in the nucleation of HNFs, realizing a perfectly homochiral domain consisting of identical helical nanofilament handedness.

Structural transitions and guest/host complexing of liquid crystal helical nanofilaments induced by nanoconfinement.

Project description:A lamellar liquid crystal (LC) phase of certain bent-core mesogenic molecules can be grown in a manner that generates a single chiral helical nanofilament in each of the cylindrical nanopores of an anodic aluminum oxide (AAO) membrane. By introducing guest molecules into the resulting composite chiral nanochannels, we explore the structures and functionality of the ordered guest/host LC complex, verifying the smectic-like positional order of the fluidic nematic LC phase, which is obtained by the combination of the LC organization and the nanoporous AAO superstructure. The guest nematic LC 4'-n-pentyl-4-cyanobiphenyl is found to form a distinctive fluid layered ordered LC complex at the nanofilament/guest interface with the host 1,3-phenylene bis[4-(4-nonyloxyphenyliminomethyl)benzoate], where this interface contacts the AAO cylinder wall. Filament growth form is strongly influenced by mixture parameters and pore dimensions.

Light-activated helical inversion in cholesteric liquid crystal microdroplets.

Project description:Cholesteric liquid crystal (CLC) droplets exhibit nontrivial topological features, which are controlled by the ratio between the cholesteric pitch and the droplet radius. The radial spherical structure (RSS) is of particular interest, as it reveals an onion-like concentric organization of the cholesteric helices, leading to the expression of spherical Bragg microcavities. Using an overcrowded alkene-based unidirectional molecular motor as a dopant, we show that the topological defect structure in the droplet can be activated by illumination. By using appropriate molecular motor concentrations, light can either break the symmetry of topological defects (as observed for the bent-twisted bipolar structure), or it can induce inversion of handedness in an onion-like organization (in the case of RSS). This latter feature may pave the way toward alternative activation modes of lasers based on cholesteric droplets. By also studying CLC droplets once they have reached full photoconversion at photostationary state (PSS), we highlight that the strong influence of confinement on the droplets structure occurs to the same extent after the helix inversion event. Our results are interpreted in terms of numerical simulations of the droplets' structure, which shed light on the major role played by curvature close to the droplets' center, this latter one becoming dominant when the droplet radius is small.

Colloidal cholesteric liquid crystal in spherical confinement.

Project description:The organization of nanoparticles in constrained geometries is an area of fundamental and practical importance. Spherical confinement of nanocolloids leads to new modes of packing, self-assembly, phase separation and relaxation of colloidal liquids; however, it remains an unexplored area of research for colloidal liquid crystals. Here we report the organization of cholesteric liquid crystal formed by nanorods in spherical droplets. For cholesteric suspensions of cellulose nanocrystals, with progressive confinement, we observe phase separation into a micrometer-size isotropic droplet core and a cholesteric shell formed by concentric nanocrystal layers. Further confinement results in a transition to a bipolar planar cholesteric morphology. The distribution of polymer, metal, carbon or metal oxide nanoparticles in the droplets is governed by the nanoparticle size and yields cholesteric droplets exhibiting fluorescence, plasmonic properties and magnetic actuation. This work advances our understanding of how the interplay of order, confinement and topological defects affects the morphology of soft matter.

Cholesteric Cellulose Liquid Crystal Fibers by Direct Drawing.

Project description:Polymer fibers are attracting increasing attention as a type of fundamental material for a wide range of products. However, to incorporate novel functionality, a crucial challenge is to simultaneously manipulate their structuring across multiple length scales. In this research, a facile and universal approach is proposed by directly drawing a pre-gel feedstock embedding a cellulose cholesteric liquid crystal (CLC). An in situ photo-polymerization process is applied, which not only allows for the continuous drawing of the filaments without breakup but also makes the final CLC fibers a colored appearance. More importantly, the multiscale properties of the fibers, such as their diameter, morphology, and the internal liquid crystalline ordering of the molecules (and thus structural color), can be manipulated by several controlling parameters. Combining this cross-scale tunability with a smart functional hydrogel system results in the formation of fibers with structural coloration, self-healing, electrical conduction, and thermal-sensing abilities. We believe that this platform can be extended to other hydrogel systems and will help unlock a wide variety of real-life applications.

Robust cholesteric liquid crystal elastomer fibres for mechanochromic textiles.

Project description:Mechanically responsive textiles have transformative potential in many areas from fashion to healthcare. Cholesteric liquid crystal elastomers have strong mechanochromic responses that offer attractive opportunities for such applications. Nonetheless, making liquid crystalline elastomer fibres suitable for textiles is challenging since the Plateau-Rayleigh instability tends to break up precursor solutions into droplets. Here, we report a simple approach that balances the viscoelastic properties of the precursor solution to avoid this outcome and achieve long and mechanically robust cholesteric liquid crystal elastomer filaments. These filaments have fast, progressive and reversible mechanochromic responses, from red to blue (wavelength shift of 155 nm), when stretched up to 200%. Moreover, the fibres can be sewed into garments and withstand repeated stretching and regular machine washing. This approach and resulting fibres may be useful for applications in wearable technology and other areas benefiting from autonomous strain sensing or detection of critically strong deformations.

Bioinspired Confined Assembly of Cellulosic Cholesteric Liquid Crystal Bubbles.

Project description:Construction of biomimetic models for structural color evolution not only gives new photonic phenomena but also provide cues for biological morphogenesis. Here, a novel confined self-assembly method is proposed for the generation of hydroxypropyl cellulose (HPC)-based cholesteric liquid crystals (CLCs) microbubbles. The assembly process relies on the combination of droplet microfluidics, solvent extraction, and a volume confined environment. The as-prepared HPC structural color microbubbles have a transparent shell, an orderly arranged cholesteric liquid crystal (CLC) middle layer, and an innermost bubble core. The size of the microbubble, shell thickness, and the color of the CLC layer can be adjusted by altering the microfluidic parameters. Intriguingly, benefited from the compartmentalization effect provided by droplet microfluidics, microbubbles with multiple cores of different color combinations are generated under precise control. The self-assembled CLCs microbubbles have bright structural color, suspending ability, and good temperature-sensitive characteristics, making them ideal underwater sensors. The present confined assembly approach will shed light on creating novel photonic structures and the HPC microbubble will find widespread applications in multifunctional sensing, optical display, and other related fields are believed.

Polymer-Dispersed Cholesteric Liquid Crystal under Homeotropic Anchoring: Electrically Induced Structures with λ1/2-Disclination.

Project description:Orientational structures of polymer-dispersed cholesteric liquid crystal under homeotropic anchoring and their transformations under the action of an electric field are studied. The switching of cholesteric droplets between different topological states are experimentally and theoretically demonstrated. Structures with λ+1/2-disclination are found and considered. These structures are formed during the transformation of a twisted toroidal configuration induced by a decrease in the electric field when a relative chiral parameter N0>6.3. The transformation of the initial structure with a bipolar distribution of the helix axis into a twisted toroidal configuration and then into a structure with λ+1/2-disclination is investigated in detail. The behavior of these structures under the influence of an external electric field, as well as the appearance of structures with λ-1/2-disclination, are studied. Obtained results are promising for the development of optical materials with programmable properties.

Cholesteric cellulose liquid crystal ink for three-dimensional structural coloration.

Project description:SignificanceWe propose a printable structural color ink composed of cholesteric cellulose liquid crystals together with gelatin and a thermal-responsive hydrogel. The ink is endowed with vivid structural colors and printability due to its constituents. Based on this, we print a series of graphics and three-dimensional (3D) objects with vivid color appearances. Moreover, the printed objects possess dual thermal responsiveness, which results in visible color change around body temperature. These performances, together with the biocompatibility of the constituents, indicate that the present ink represents a leap forward to the next-generation 3D printing and would unlock a wide range of real-life applications.

Visible-light-programmed patterning in dynamically bonded cholesteric liquid crystal elastomer.

Project description:Optical properties of cholesteric liquid crystal elastomers (CLCEs) can be tuned by an external field, however, it will spontaneously restore to the original state after the field is removed. Here, we introduce diselenide dynamic covalent bonds (DCBs) into CLCEs, whose optical properties can be reversibly and precisely tuned under the combined action of force and light. The tuned optical properties will be written into and remembered by the CLCEs, thus a programming effect is achieved. The prepared dynamical diselenide bonded CLCE films have the typical reversibly mechanochromism property, and high-resolution colourful patterning can be programmed by adjusting exposure time and intensity of masked visible-light under different tensile or compressive strain states. The DCB-CLCEs combine the novel anisotropy of CLCEs and the dynamic chain exchangeable ability of DCBs, which endows the materials with reprogrammable optical properties. We demonstrate a simple strategy of writing naked-eye high-resolution colourful patterning into a film with mechanochromism property by thermal or visible-light, it shows great potential in display devices, anticounterfeiting labels, sensors, optical films and smart materials.

Optimized Soft Lithography Method for Polymer Cholesteric Liquid Crystal Flakes Fabrication.

Project description:Polymer cholesteric liquid crystal (PCLC) flakes are gaining increasing interest for a wide variety of applications because of their unique optical properties and capabilities. Soft lithography is the most effective way to fabricate regularly shaped PCLC flakes. However, it is not easy to peel the flakes from the mold without breaking them. In order to peel the PCLC flakes from the patterned polydimethylsiloxane (PDMS) mold in a convenient way, in this paper, a method of coating a layer of polyvinyl alcohol (PVA) on a PDMS mold was proposed. The influence of the thickness of the PVA layer on the shape of the PCLC flakes and the release time from the PDMS mold were investigated. The results show that the presence of the PVA layer can speed up the release of the PCLC flakes and help maintain the shape effectively. Notably, the utilization of a PVA layer makes the PDMS mold recyclable. The influence of PCLC flake shape was also studied. This work will promote the development of switchable PCLC flake-based technologies.
