Adaptation and validation of the Chinese version of Dyspnoea-12 scale in individuals with chronic obstructive pulmonary disease.

ABSTRACT:

Introduction

Dyspnoea-12 scale is a validated assessment tool, capturing the perception of dyspnoea and its physical and affective effects in individuals with chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD). A validated version for the Chinese-speaking population has been unavailable.

Objective

To develop a Chinese version of D-12 (D-12-C) scale and evaluate its validity and reliability.

Methods

D-12 was translated from English to traditional Chinese in collaboration with a physician and a linguist. Back translation was adopted to ensure accuracy of the translation. A total of 155 COPD patients were recruited to test the reliability and validity of the D-12-C scale. Internal reliability and test-retest reliability were measured with Cronbach's alpha coefficient and intra-class correlation coefficient, respectively. Construct validity was assessed through exploratory factor analysis (EFA). Concurrent validity was assessed by the correlation of D-12-C total score and sub-scores and the Chinese version of Saint George's Respiratory Questionnaire (SGRQ), 36-Item Short Form Health Survey (SF-36), COPD Assessment Test (CAT) and Hospital Anxiety and Depression Scale (HADS) total score and sub-scores.

Results

The two-factor structure of D-12-C was confirmed by EFA. D-12-C and its sub-scores demonstrated high level of internal reliability (Cronbach's alpha = 0.88) and moderate level of test-retest reliability. D-12-C total score, physical and affective sub-scores were significantly correlated to SGRQ total score (r_s = 0.59, p < 0.001) and activity sub-score (r_s = 0.38, p = 0.006), SF-36 mental health sub-score (r_s = -0.36, p < 0.001), CAT (r_s = 0.56, p < 0.001), HADS anxiety (r_s = 0.51, p < 0.001) and depression sub-scores (r_s = 0.44, p < 0.001).

Conclusion

D-12-C scale was developed, which demonstrated satisfactory reliability and validity in measuring dyspnoea among COPD patients.

Project description:BackgroundExisting research on sexual satisfaction has been carried out primarily in Western samples, lacking insights from less sexually permissive cultures such as China, particularly in the case of heterosexual and sexual minority women.AimThis study aimed to culturally adapt and validate the New Sexual Satisfaction Scale-Short Form (NSSS-S) in a sample of Chinese women with diverse sexual identities.MethodsThe standard forward-backward translation procedure and cognitive debriefing were conducted to translate the NSSS-S into Mandarin Chinese (NSSS-SC). The psychometric properties of the NSSS-SC were assessed in this cross-sectional survey.OutcomesThe primary outcome measure was the NSSS-S. The World Health Organization Quality of Life-Abbreviated Form, the Positive Sexuality Scale, the Female Sexual Function Index, and a single-item measure of sexual satisfaction were used to test the measure's validity.ResultsA total of 336 Chinese women were recruited, with an average age of 26.82 years (SD, 6.03; range, 18-56). The 1-dimensional model had a good fit to the data and was invariant across 2 sexual identity groups (cisgender heterosexual and sexual minority women) and age. The NSSS-SC had good reliability; no significant floor and ceiling effects were observed. We found moderate to strong correlations between the NSSS-SC scores and the sexual satisfaction, sexual function, positive sexuality, and quality-of-life indicators. On average, cisgender heterosexual women were characterized by higher sexual satisfaction scores when compared with sexual minority women.Clinical translationThe NSSS-SC can be used as a reliable and culturally appropriate measure of sexual satisfaction in women of different ages and sexual identities, which could be used in future sex-related surveys.Strengths and limitationsThis study is the first to translate the NSSS-S into Chinese and validate the NSSS-SC in a sample of Chinese women with varied sexual identities. However, this study recruited only female participants; future studies should also validate the NSSS-SC in Chinese men.ConclusionThe NSSS-SC is linguistically equivalent to the original scale and has solid psychometric properties, which can be used to assess sexual satisfaction levels in diverse samples of Chinese women.

Project description:BackgroundIn China, clinical deterioration events present a real problem for every clinical nurse. Patient deterioration is determined in part by nurses' attitudes toward early recognition of clinical deterioration. However, research on attitudes toward the early identification of clinical deterioration is still in its infancy, and even less research has been done on ward nurses' attitudes toward the early identification of clinical deterioration. To drive behavioral change and improve the care of deteriorating patients, nurses need comprehensive, valid, and reliable tools to assess their attitudes toward early identification of deterioration.ObjectiveIn this study, we aimed to translate the Attitudes Toward Recognizing Early and Noticeable Deterioration (ATREND) scale into Chinese and to assess its validity and reliability tests.MethodsFrom March 2022 to July 2022, the ATREND scale was translated, back-translated, and cross-culturally adapted into the Chinese version using a modified Brislin translation model. Then, 460 ward nurses were recruited from tertiary Grade A general hospitals in two cities: Shenyang and Jinzhou in Liaoning Province, China. Reliability analyses were conducted using internal consistency, split-half, and test-retest reliability. We convened a committee of experts to determine the validity of the content. Tests of the structural validity of the scale were conducted using exploratory and validation factor analyses.ResultsThe Cronbach's α value of the Chinese version of the ATREND scale was 0.804, and the Cronbach's α value of the dimensions ranged from 0.782 to 0.863. The split-half reliability and test-retest reliability were 0.846 and 0.711, respectively. Furthermore, the scale has an index of content validity of 0.922, indicating a high level of content validity. In exploratory factor analysis, eigenvalues, total variance explained, and scree plot supported a three-factor structure. The three-factor model supported by this study was confirmed by confirmatory factor analysis (CFA). Moreover, the model fitting indexes (e.g., χ 2/DF = 1.498, GFI = 0.954, RMSEA = 0.047) were all within acceptable limits based on the CFA.ConclusionThe Chinese version of the scale is reliable and valid among ward nurses. Nursing educators and clinicians will be able to develop targeted educational programs to enhance the competence and behaviors of Chinese ward nurses in recognizing clinical deterioration. It will be based on the developed scale to assess Chinese nurses' attitudes and practices regarding early recognition of clinical deterioration. As a result, it is necessary to consider the Chinese scale's three-factor structure. The developed three-factor structured scale will assess Chinese ward nurses' attitudes and practices toward patient observation and vital sign-monitoring empowerment, enlightening them on the importance of patient observation, encouraging ward nurses to use a wider range of patient assessment techniques to capture early signs of clinical deterioration, and helping ward nurses to develop clinical confidence to monitor clinical deterioration.

Project description:ObjectivesThe objective of this study was to translate the Intensive Care Oral Care Frequency and Assessment Scale into Chinese and to evaluate its reliability and validity in Chinese ICU patients.MethodsThis study was conducted using a cross-sectional survey design in ICUs of three tertiary hospitals in Huai'an and Taizhou from October 2022 to April 2023. The Chinese version of the Intensive Care Oral Care Frequency and Assessment Scale (C-ICOCFAS) was developed by expert consultation and cultural adaptation according to the two-person verbatim translation-back translation criteria described in the Brislin model. Item analysis was conducted using correlation analysis, and validity analysis included content validity, construct validity, and criterion validity. Reliability analyses included Cronbach's alpha coefficient, Guttman split-half reliability, and interrater reliability.ResultsThe Chinese version of the scale consisted of one dimension and nine items, consistent with the original version. Exploratory factor analysis showed KMO = 0.891, and the cumulative variance contribution reached 65.534 %. The confirmatory factor analysis indicated a good fit, χ2/df = 2.124, NFI = 0.950, GFI = 0.942, IFI = 0.973, CFI = 0.973, SRMR = 0.037, and RMSEA = 0.073. The content validity of the scale was 0.97, and the content validity of the items ranged from 0.83 to 1.00; the criterion validity was 0.969; the Cronbach's alpha coefficient was 0.919; the total item correlation coefficient was 0.725-0.831; the Guttman split-half reliability was 0.919; and the interrater reliability was 0.885.ConclusionThe C-ICOCFAS has good reliability and validity and can effectively guide nurses in the frequency of oral care for ICU patients.Implications for clinical practiceThis tool can significantly improve the level of oral care among ICU patients and further promote the health and safety of patients. These findings can help clinical nursing experts to better understand and master the use of scales and standards to improve nursing.
