Auxetic vibration behaviours of periodic tetrahedral units with a shared edge.

ABSTRACT: A very low-frequency mode supported within an auxetic structure is presented. We propose a constrained periodic framework with corner-to-corner and edge-to-edge sharing of tetrahedra and develop a kinematic model incorporating two types of linear springs to calculate the momentum term under infinitesimal transformations. The modal analysis shows that the microstructure with its two degrees of freedom has both low- and high-frequency modes under auxetic transformations. The low-frequency mode approaches zero frequency when the corresponding spring constant tends to zero. With regard to coupled eigenmodes, the stress-strain relationship of the uniaxial forced vibration covers a wide range. When excited, a very slow motion is clearly observed along with a structural expansion for almost zero values of the linear elastic modulus.

α-Actinin links extracellular matrix rigidity-sensing contractile units with periodic cell-edge retractions.

Project description:During spreading and migration, the leading edges of cells undergo periodic protrusion-retraction cycles. The functional purpose of these cycles is unclear. Here, using submicrometer polydimethylsiloxane pillars as substrates for cell spreading, we show that periodic edge retractions coincide with peak forces produced by local contractile units (CUs) that assemble and disassemble along the cell edge to test matrix rigidity. We find that, whereas actin rearward flow produces a relatively constant force inward, the peak of local contractile forces by CUs scales with rigidity. The cytoskeletal protein α-actinin is shared between these two force-producing systems. It initially localizes to the CUs and subsequently moves inward with the actin flow. Knockdown of α-actinin causes aberrant rigidity sensing, loss of CUs, loss of protrusion-retraction cycles, and, surprisingly, enables the cells to proliferate on soft matrices. We present a model based on these results in which local CUs drive rigidity sensing and adhesion formation.

3D auxetic single material periodic structure with ultra-wide tunable bandgap.

Project description:The design and the combination of innovative metamaterials are attracting increasing interest in the scientific community because of their unique properties that go beyond the ones of natural materials. In particular, auxetic materials and phononic crystals are widely studied for their negative Poisson's ratio and their bandgap opening properties, respectively. In this work, auxeticity and phononic crystals bandgap properties are properly combined to obtain a single phase periodic structure with a tridimensional wide tunable bandgap. When an external tensile load is applied to the structure, the auxetic unit cells change their configurations by exploiting the negative Poisson's ratio and this results in the tuning, either hardening or softening, of the frequencies of the modes limiting the 3D bandgap. Moreover, the expansion of the unit cell in all the directions, due to the auxeticity property, guarantees a fully 3D bandgap tunability of the proposed structure. Numerical simulations and analytical models are proposed to prove the claimed properties. The first experimental evidence of the tunability of a wide 3D bandgap is then shown thanks to the fabrication of a prototype by means of additive manufacturing.

Reentrant tensegrity: A three-periodic, chiral, tensegrity structure that is auxetic.

Project description:We present a three-periodic, chiral, tensegrity structure and demonstrate that it is auxetic. Our tensegrity structure is constructed using the chiral symmetry Π+ cylinder packing, transforming cylinders to elastic elements and cylinder contacts to incompressible rods. The resulting structure displays local reentrant geometry at its vertices and is shown to be auxetic when modeled as an equilibrium configuration of spatial constraints subject to a quasi-static deformation. When the structure is subsequently modeled as a lattice material with elastic elements, the auxetic behavior is again confirmed through finite element modeling. The cubic symmetry of the original structure means that the auxetic behavior is observed in both perpendicular directions and is close to isotropic in magnitude. This structure could be the simplest three-dimensional analog to the two-dimensional reentrant honeycomb. This, alongside the chirality of the structure, makes it an interesting design target for multifunctional materials.

Study in circular auxetic structures for efficiency enhancement in piezoelectric vibration energy harvesting.

Project description:Piezoelectric (PZT) components are one of the most popular elements in vibration sensing and also energy harvesting. They are very well established, cost effective and available in different geometries however there are still several challenges in their application particularly in vibration energy harvesting. They are normally narrow-band elements and work in high-frequency range. Their efficiency and power extraction density are also generally low compared with different electromagnetic techniques. Auxetic structures are proposed here to enhance efficiency of the piezoelectric circular patches in vibration energy harvesting. These kinds of patches namely PZT buzzers are inexpensive (less than 10 USD) elements and easily available. Two novel circular auxetic substrates are proposed to improve power extraction capacity of the conventional piezoelectric buzzers. Negative Poison's ratio of the proposed meta-structure helps in efficiency enhancement. The concept is introduced, analyzed and verified through the finite element modeling and experimental testing. The idea is proved to work by comparing the harvested electrical power in the auxetic design against the conventional plain system. A parametric study is then carried out and effects of important electrical and geometrical parameters as well as the material property on the power extraction efficiency are assessed to arrive at optimum parameters. It is shown that by employing the auxetic design, a remarkable improvement in the harvested power is achievable. It is shown that for the two proposed auxetic designs, at the resonance frequency, we could reach to 10.2 and 13.3 magnification factor with respect to the plain energy harvester. Another important feature is that the resonant frequency in these new designs is very much lower than the conventional resonators. Results of this study can open a new path to application of inexpensive PZT buzzers in large-scale vibration energy harvesting.

Backscattering-free edge states below all bands in two-dimensional auxetic media.

Project description:Unidirectional and backscattering-free propagation of sound waves is of fundamental interest in physics and highly sought-after in engineering. Current strategies utilize topologically protected chiral edge modes in bandgaps, or complex mechanisms involving active constituents or nonlinearity. Here we propose passive, linear, one-way edge states based on spin-momentum locking of Rayleigh waves in two-dimensional media in the limit of vanishing bulk to shear modulus ratio, which provides perfect unidirectional and backscattering-free edge propagation that is immune to any edge roughness and has no limitation on its frequency (instead of residing in gaps between bulk bands). We further show that such modes are characterized by a topological winding number that protects the linear momentum of the wave along the edge. These passive and backscattering-free edge waves have the potential to enable phononic devices in the form of lattices or continua that work in previously inaccessible frequency ranges.

Existence of edge modes in periodic microstrip transmission line.

Project description:The microstrip of modulated width is a realization of a one-dimensional photonic crystal operating in the microwave regime. Like any photonic crystal, the periodic microstrip is characterised by the presence of frequency bands and band gaps that enable and prohibit wave propagation, respectively. The frequency bands for microstrip of the symmetric unit cell can be distinguished by 0 or π Zak phase. The sum of these topological parameters for all bands below a given frequency gap determines the value of the surface impedance at the end of the microstrip. We demonstrate that edge modes are absent in a finite microstrip terminated at both ends in the centres of unit cells, but they can be induced by adding the defected cells. Edge modes present at both ends of the microstrip enable microwave tunneling with high transitivity in the frequency gap with or without a change in phase. This has been demonstrated experimentally and developed in detail using numerical simulations and model calculations. The investigated system, with a doublet of edge modes in the frequency gap, can be considered as a narrow passband filter of high selectivity and characterised by a significant group delay.

Understanding nonlinear vibration behaviours in high-power ultrasonic surgical devices.

Project description:Ultrasonic surgical devices are increasingly used in oral, craniofacial and maxillofacial surgery to cut mineralized tissue, offering the surgeon high accuracy with minimal risk to nerve and vessel tissue. Power ultrasonic devices operate in resonance, requiring their length to be a half-wavelength or multiple-half-wavelength. For bone surgery, devices based on a half-wavelength have seen considerable success, but longer multiple-half-wavelength endoscopic devices have recently been proposed to widen the range of surgeries. To provide context for these developments, some examples of surgical procedures and the associated designs of ultrasonic cutting tips are presented. However, multiple-half-wavelength components, typical of endoscopic devices, have greater potential to exhibit nonlinear dynamic behaviours that have a highly detrimental effect on device performance. Through experimental characterization of the dynamic behaviour of endoscopic devices, it is demonstrated how geometrical features influence nonlinear dynamic responses. Period doubling, a known route to chaotic behaviour, is shown to be significantly influenced by the cutting tip shape, whereas the cutting tip has only a limited effect on Duffing-like responses, particularly the shape of the hysteresis curve, which is important for device stability. These findings underpin design, aiming to pave the way for a new generation of ultrasonic endoscopic surgical devices.

Shared periodic performer movements coordinate interactions in duo improvisations.

Project description:Human interaction involves the exchange of temporally coordinated, multimodal cues. Our work focused on interaction in the visual domain, using music performance as a case for analysis due to its temporally diverse and hierarchical structures. We made use of two improvising duo datasets-(i) performances of a jazz standard with a regular pulse and (ii) non-pulsed, free improvizations-to investigate whether human judgements of moments of interaction between co-performers are influenced by body movement coordination at multiple timescales. Bouts of interaction in the performances were manually annotated by experts and the performers' movements were quantified using computer vision techniques. The annotated interaction bouts were then predicted using several quantitative movement and audio features. Over 80% of the interaction bouts were successfully predicted by a broadband measure of the energy of the cross-wavelet transform of the co-performers' movements in non-pulsed duos. A more complex model, with multiple predictors that captured more specific, interacting features of the movements, was needed to explain a significant amount of variance in the pulsed duos. The methods developed here have key implications for future work on measuring visual coordination in musical ensemble performances, and can be easily adapted to other musical contexts, ensemble types and traditions.

To improve the key properties of nonlinear optical crystals assembled with tetrahedral functional building units.

Project description:Nonlinear optical (NLO) crystals assembled with conventional non-π-conjugated tetrahedral functional building units (FBUs), generally referring to [PO4] and [BO4], usually exhibit weak nonlinearity and poor birefringence. It is currently proposed that partially substituting oxygen atoms with fluoride atoms in these FBUs could enhance these crucial properties. Hence, we investigated for the first time the NLO-related properties of NH4BAsO4F (ABAF), which was constructed from tetrahedral [BO3F] and [AsO4] FBUs, and enhancements of these properties were observed in this material, that is large second-harmonic generation (SHG) response (2 × KDP) and improved birefringence (0.03 at 1064 nm). Notably, both SHG coefficient and birefringence of ABAF exceeded those of a great majority of phosphates, sulfates, or boron phosphates and achieved a preferable balance. It is interesting that ABAF shows vast structural similarities to the typical NLO crystals Sr2Be2B2O7 (SBBO) and KBe2BO3F2 (KBBF), which might be the partial reason why it showed improvement in these vital properties. This work may afford some inspiration for enhancing the key performances of NLO crystals assembled with non-π-conjugated tetrahedra.

Electron-phonon interaction toward engineering carrier mobility of periodic edge structured graphene nanoribbons.

Project description:Graphene nanoribbons have many extraordinary electrical properties and are the candidates for semiconductor industry. In this research, we propose a design of Coved GNRs with periodic structure ranged from 4 to 8 nm or more, of which the size is within practical feature sizes by advanced lithography tools. The carrier transport properties of Coved GNRs with the periodic coved shape are designed to break the localized electronic state and reducing electron-phonon scattering. In this way, the mobility of Coved GNRs can be enhanced by orders compared with the zigzag GNRs in same width. Moreover, in contrast to occasional zero bandgap transition of armchair and zigzag GNRs without precision control in atomic level, the Coved GNRs with periodic edge structures can exclude the zero bandgap conditions, which makes practical the mass production process. The designed Coved-GNRs is fabricated over the Germanium (110) substrate where the graphene can be prepared in the single-crystalline and single-oriented formants and the edge of GNRs is later repaired under "balanced condition growth" and we demonstrate that the propose coved structures are compatible to current fabrication facility.
