Does hotel management matter to overcoming the COVID-19 crisis? The Spanish case.

ABSTRACT: This paper analyses the influence that the initial actions and strategies pursued by hotel managers have on the recovery of occupancy after a crisis such as the COVID-19 pandemic. To do this, a specific survey is carried out on managers of Spanish hotels. The main findings show that labour actions, especially plans for temporary employment regulations, innovation and differentiation strategies, reorientation to closer markets and obtaining information from official sources as a guarantee of their certainty, are the measures that have a greater impact on the possibilities of recovering hotel activity. In addition, government measures that contribute to the improvement of the financial situation of firms can also play a relevant role in hotel recovery.

Social Restrictions versus Testing Campaigns in the COVID-19 Crisis: A Predictive Model Based on the Spanish Case.

Project description:The global COVID-19 spread has forced countries to implement non-pharmacological interventions (NPI) (i.e., mobility restrictions and testing campaigns) to preserve health systems. Spain is one of the most severely impacted countries, both clinically and economically. In an effort to support policy decision-making, we aimed to assess the impacts of different NPI on COVID-19 epidemiology, healthcare costs and Gross Domestic Product (GDP). A modified Susceptible-Exposed-Infectious-Removed epidemiological model was created to simulate the pandemic evolution. Its output was used to populate an economic model to quantify healthcare costs and GDP variation through a regression model which correlates NPI and GDP change from 42 countries. Thirteen scenarios combining different NPI were consecutively simulated in the epidemiological and economic models. Both increased testing and stringency could reduce cases, hospitalizations and deaths. While policies based on increased testing rates lead to higher healthcare costs, increased stringency is correlated with greater GDP declines, with differences of up to 4.4% points. Increased test sensitivity may lead to a reduction of cases, hospitalizations and deaths and to the implementation of pooling techniques that can increase throughput testing capacity. Alternative strategies to control COVID-19 spread entail differing economic outcomes. Decision-makers may utilize this tool to identify the most suitable strategy considering epidemiological and economic outcomes.

Leadership and crisis management and their link to improvement of hotel performance: A study of the Jordanian hotel sector.

Project description:The current environment of volatility, uncertainty, complexity and ambiguity has created a prolonged state of uncertainty for the Jordanian hotel industry. Crisis management leadership is one of the most important attributes for a hotel. The main aim of this study is to evaluate the mediating role of crisis management, the moderating role of a leader's experience, their relationship to styles of leadership (transformational and transactional) and the resultant performance of Jordanian hotels. Research was based on a self-distributed questionnaire survey of 119 respondents currently holding managerial positions in Jordanian 3 to 5 star hotels. Partial Least Square Structural Equation Modelling was then employed. The findings suggest a transformational leadership style and crisis management experience are the most important attributes for a leader to sustain hotel performance during a crisis. Leaders with a transactional leadership style need crisis management skills to sustain hotel performance rather than experience which is not as important in their case. This paper proves that different leadership styles have a different influence on a hotel's survivability during a crisis. Therefore, a hotel's management group must ensure that a leader with an appropriate leadership style takes control during these situations. By combining leadership attributes, experience, and crisis management in a comprehensive framework to ensure sustainable hotel performance in the face of a crisis, this study adds to the body of knowledge on leadership and crisis management practices.

Exploring the role of human resource development functions on crisis management: The case of Dubai-UAE during Covid-19 crisis.

Project description:Employee welfare represents a critical element of success for companies to remain competitive. Human resources increasingly encompass the management of critical situations that affect the employees' wellbeing. This research analyzes the effect of Human Resource Development (HRD), functions on the effectiveness of crisis management. It is an attempt to include HRD in the theory of Crisis management. Using Structural Equation Models-Partial Least Squares (SEM-PLS) analysis, the study analyzes how training, leadership, organizational strategy, and organizational culture directly positively impact the efficiency of Crisis management (CM) during the Covid-19 crisis in the public entities of Dubai-UAE. In particular, training showed to be the best predictor, followed by the Organizational culture. Organizational structure, Values and uniqueness show no impact on CM within the context of public entities of Dubai-UAE.

An Evaluation of a Web-Based Crisis Management Training Program for Nurse Managers: The Case of the COVID-19 Crisis.

Project description:ObjectiveThe effective management of nursing services, the main power in patients' care and treatment in the front line of the fight against the COVID-19 pandemic, and nurse managers' effective leadership behaviors in the fight against the pandemic have been important key factors. It is thus critical to support nurse managers, strengthen them through training, and increase their competency so that they can successfully manage crises, disasters, or pandemics. This study aims to assess the effect of a web-based training program on the knowledge levels of nurse managers who worked during the COVID-19 pandemic.MethodsThis is a randomized controlled experimental study. The study population consisted of the members of the Nurse Managers Association. The intervention group had 30 participants, and the control group had 31 participants in the final.ResultsThere was no statistically significant difference between the intervention and control groups' mean number of correct pre-test responses (P = 0.843). However, the intervention group's mean number of correct post-test responses was statistically significantly higher than the control group's after the web-based training program (P < 0.001).ConclusionsWeb-based training programs can effectively increase nurse managers' knowledge levels. Therefore, web-based training programs should be developed in ordinary times for the management of crisis situations.

Hospital-Level COVID-19 Preparedness and Crisis Management in Czechia.

Project description:Objectives: The COVID-19 pandemic exposed the inadequacy of pandemic preparedness mechanisms worldwide. This study gathered comprehensive data from Czech hospitals, identified possible weaknesses in important areas of crisis preparedness, and quantified changes performed to enhance crisis resilience of healthcare facilities. Methods: Drawing on literature review on pandemic preparedness and hospital crisis management and detailed interviews with hospital representatives, a questionnaire was designed and distributed by email among quality managers of all Czech hospitals. Statistical analysis of their responses was conducted using EZR software. Fisher's exact test and Kruskal-Wallis test, with post hoc testing, were used to assess statistical significance. Results: Achieving response rate of 31.9%, responses from 65 hospitals were analysed. New crisis management policies were necessary in 72.3% of responding hospitals. Furthermore, a majority of the respondents changes indicated the need for changes in policies on general pandemic, human resources and infrastructure and material preparedness. Conclusion: The COVID-19 crisis required significant alterations to previously established hospital crisis management protocols and establishment of new ones. The absence of a unified system for crisis preparedness was noted at hospital and national levels.

Corporate policies and outcomes during the COVID-19 crisis: Does managerial ability matter?

Project description:The devastating impacts of the COVID-19 pandemic have forced firms to formulate strategies that can help them effectively cope with the crisis. In this study, we investigate whether and how managerial ability affects the corporate policies during the COVID-19 crisis. Specifically, we investigate how managerial ability affects the policies of firms related to investment, financing, cash holdings, and dividend payouts. We also explore whether firm performance is influenced by managerial ability. Using quarterly data of Chinese firms during 2020, results show that firms with higher ability managers reduce their investments, financing, and cash holdings, yet increase their dividend payouts during the COVID-19 crisis. Findings also indicate that firms having more capable managers tend to outperform those having less capable managers. Results of our additional analyses reveal that general ability carries more value than special ability and that managerial ability has varying effects on state-owned and non-state-owned firms. These results contribute to the literature by highlighting managerial ability as a critical determinant of firm performance and policies at times of uncertainty.

Hotel dynamic pricing, stochastic demand and covid-19.

Project description:We develop an innovative framework to study how hoteliers apply inventory control and price discrimination taking into account seasonality. We end up with a time-varying model that, using publicly available information, connects the early booking and last-minute pricing decisions. In doing so, we account for the expected demand size and price elasticity, the inventory put on sales, and the last-minute demand shocks. An analysis focused on 100 hotels in Milan (Italy) shows that during the Covid-19 last-minute discounts/surcharges remain stable over long periods while the role of advance booking as a lever for revenue management is reduced. Moreover, the pandemic has increased the last-minute adjustment at the short advance booking, especially for midweek days.

Thyrotoxic Crisis and COVID-19 Infection: An Extraordinary Case and Literature Review.

Project description:The novel coronavirus SARS-CoV-2, which causes the disease commonly known as COVID-19, has spread around the world, associated mostly with respiratory tract symptoms. We report the first case of a thyrotoxic crisis precipitated by COVID-19 and describe its identification, diagnosis, and management in the emergency unit. We also conduct a systematic review of thyrotoxic crisis literature and COVID-19 infection. This case highlights the importance of considering the SARS-CoV2 virus as a potential trigger of a thyroid storm. It also shows the need to maintain extreme contact precautions even after one month of COVID-19 symptom onset.

Project description:Case management of COVID-19 is critically important to save lives and reduce the fear and anxiety evoked by this disease in communities. However, most healthcare systems have been overwhelmed in many parts of the world. It is also essential to screen patients to be able to identify those who are likely to suffer from severe disease, to ensure more effective use of medical resources. Disease severity can be determined based on simple vital signs; some laboratory markers are useful adjuncts. Treatment for COVID-19 is largely supportive although a number of repurposed drugs have been evaluated for its efficacy in clinical trials. For example, dexamethasone has now been considered as a standard therapy for severe cases, while remdesivir and tocilizumab are promising agents in selected patient groups.
