Project description:Due to the continuous lack of specific background values (BVs) for soil heavy metals in the Huang-Huai-Hai Plain in Henan province (HPHP), many researchers have used soil heavy BVs specific to Henan Province (HP) or Fluvisols of China (FC) as reference criteria to assess soil heavy metal pollution. However, spatial differences in the soil heavy metal BVs between HPHP, HP, and FC, as well as within the HPHP, remain uncertain, affecting the reliability of evaluation results. A total of 897 surface soil samples were collected from the HPHP, with 336 and 561 samples collected from the southern and northern parts of the Shaying River, respectively. According to the obtained results, the BVs of soil Hg, As, Cd, Cr, Pb, Cu, Zn, and Ni in the HPHP were 0.064, 6.67, 0.129, 53.24, 19.67, 22.87, 64.00, and 26.25 mg·kg-1, respectively. The BVs of soil Hg and Cd were higher than those in HP, Fluvisols in Henan Province, and FC, showing strong and extremely strong levels. The BVs of other soil heavy metals exhibited slight differences from the reference BVs. On the other hand, the BVs of soil Hg, As, Cd, Cr, Pb, Cu, Zn, and Ni were 0.066, 4.11, 0.130, 56.72, 20.97, 23.31, 59.21, and 24.03 mg·kg-1 in the southern part and 0.061, 7.45, 0.129, 51.92, 18.96, 22.72, 66.96, and 27.16 mg·kg-1 in the northern part of the Shaying River, respectively. In addition, there were no significant differences in the Hg and Cd BVs between the two parts. Cu BVs in the southern part were significantly higher than those observed in the northern part, while the As, Zn, and Ni BVs in the northern part were significantly higher than those revealed in the southern part. In contrast, the Cr and Pb BVs in the northern part were significantly lower than those observed in the southern part.

Project description:Economic growth becomes a critical component in the development of every country since it enhances living standards and other related concerns while eliminating poverty. As a developing country, Sri Lanka must place more emphasis to achieve sustainable economic growth. In addition, various factors have positive and negative impacts on economy's growth. As such, the specific goals of any economy are to sustain long-term economic growth and low inflation. As a result, generally, high inflation is destructive for an economy and low inflation is beneficial. Therefore, it is worth investigating the impact of inflation on economic growth concerning a stable inflation level. This study examines the impact of inflation on economic growth in Sri Lanka by employing the Auto Regressive Distributed Lag model as the estimation technique. Furthermore, the findings illustrate a negative relationship between inflation and economic growth in the short run; when inflation increases by 1%, economic growth decreases by United States Dollar (USD) 3,427.94 million and long run economic growth declines by 107,263.8 million USD. Subsequently, with the current economic reality of Sri Lanka, the macroeconomic policies should be adaptable to maintain the stability of the inflation rate for a sustainable economy.

Project description:Network science has been widely applied in theoretical and empirical studies of global value chain (GVC), and many related articles have emerged, forming many more mature and complete analytical frameworks. Among them, the GVC accounting method based on complex network theory is different from the mainstream economics in both research angle and content. In this paper, we build up global industrial value chain network (GIVCN) models based on World Input-Output Database, introduce the theoretical framework of Social Capital, and define the network-based indicators with economic meanings. Second, we follow the econometric framework to analyze the hypothesis and test whether it is true. Finally, we study how the three types of capital constituted by these indicators interact with each other, and discuss their impact on the social capital (economic development level, i.e., GDP). The results prove that the structural capital (industrial status) has a positive impact on the social capital; the relational capital (industrial correlation) has a positive impact on both social capital and structural capital; the cognitive capital (industrial structure) has a small impact on the social capital, structural capital, and relational capital.

Project description:BackgroundVivax malaria was historically epidemic in Henan Province of China and Anopheles sinensis was the main vectors and poor farming communities bare the greatest burden of disease. Knockdown resistance in An. sinensis is one of the mechanisms of resistance against pyrethroids. In the present study, the frequency of mutations from An. sinensis was examined in Henan province, China.MethodsAnopheles was collected from Kaifeng, Tongbai, Tanghe, Pingqiao, Shihe, and Yongcheng counties of Henan province in 2013. Molecular identification of Anopheles species was conducted by polymerase chain reaction (PCR) amplifying the internal transcribed spacer 2 (ITS2). Part of the IIS6 domain of the para-type sodium channel protein gene was polymerase chain reaction-amplified and directly sequenced. Frequency and geographic difference of kdr gene mutant types were analysed.Results208 Anopheles were received molecular identification, of which 169 (81.25%) were An. sinensis, 25 (12.02%) were Anopheles yatsushiroensis, and 12 (5.77%) were Anopheles lesteri. A 325 bp fragment of the para-type sodium channel gene including position 1014 was successfully sequenced from 139 Anopheles, of which 125 (89.93%) were An. sinensis, 12 (8.63%) were An. yatsushiroensis, 2 (1.44%) were An. lesteri. The molecular analyses revealed that mutations existed at codon 1014 in An. sinensis but not in An. yatsushiroensis and An. lesteri. Frequency of kdr mutation was 73.60% (92/125) from population of An. sinensis in Henan province, of which L1014F (TTT + TTC) allele frequencies accounted for 46.40% (58/125), and was higher than that of L1014C(TGT) which accounted for 27.20% (34/125) ( χ2 = 55.423, P < 0.001). The frequency of kdr mutation in Kaifeng county was 100% (49/49), and was higher than that of 37.93% (11/29) in Tongbai, 54.55% (6/11) in Pingqiao, 50.00% (3/3) in Shihe, and 62.50% (10/16) in Yongcheng county, respectively (χ2 = 39.538, P < 0.001; χ2 = 24.298, P < 0.001; χ2 = 25.913, P < 0.001; χ2 = 20.244, P < 0.001). While 92.86% (13/14) frequency of kdr mutation was found in Tanghe county, which was higher than that in Tongbai county (χ2 = 11.550, P = 0.0018).ConclusionsA high frequency of kdr gene mutations from population of An. sinensis in Henan province was found.

Project description:Studying the spatial relationship and driving forces between grain production and economic development in China can assist in the coordinated development of economic growth and grain production in both China and other developing countries. Based on panel data from 2000 to 2019 covering 2018 county-level units in China, this study comprehensively investigated the spatial distribution, spatial differences, dynamic evolution of distribution, and driving factors of China's county-level spatial deviation index of grain and economy (SDIGE) using methods such as the standard deviation ellipse method, the three-stage nested decomposition of Theil index, kernel density estimation, and geographically weighted regression (GWR) model. The results show that (1) from 2000 to 2019, China's SDIGE showed a development trend of "up-down-up," and the highest SDIGE was in the northeast region, the lowest in the east region, and the spatial pattern of "high in the northeast-low in the east coast" was increasingly prominent. (2) In terms of spatial difference, the overall difference of SDIGE in China from 2000 to 2019 showed a rising trend of development; The average contribution rate of the regional difference to the overall difference was the lowest, maintained at about 17.82%; The average contribution rate of intra city and inter-county differences to the overall difference is the highest, which is about 34.20%. (3) In terms of the driving force, the level of economic development hurts SDIGE, while population density, industrial structure, fiscal decentralisation, and terrain fluctuation have a positive and negative impact on SDIGE. To alleviate the imbalance between China's economic development and grain production, it is necessary to implement differentiated policy measures tailored to the specific characteristics of different regions to assist agricultural producers and enhance the stability of grain production.

Project description:On June 17, 2018, a case of pulmonary tuberculosis (TB) was reported among students at a senior high school in Luoning, China. The outbreak encompassed a total of 23 cases along with TB screening in the whole school by means of PPD and chest X-ray. By the end of September 2018, the entire 9 cases cultured positive had epidemiological association. All of the 9 Mycobacterium tuberculosis (Mtb) isolates available were sensitive to all drugs tested and had similar spoligotyping and 15 loci mycobacterial interspersed repetitive-unit-variable-number tandem-repeat (MIRU-VNTR) profile. Whole-genome sequencing (WGS) of the Mtb isolates revealed 20 variable nucleotide positions within 8 cases, indicating a clonal outbreak. The index case, which was first identified and diagnosed, is separated from the cluster by a minimum number of 95 distinct SNPs. Minimum distance spanning tree (MST) indicted that the 8 cases were indeed part of a single transmission chain. It was concluded that this is an epidemic situation of TB outbreak exposed by the aggrieved index case at school, which was caused by the veiled infectious case wherein a student was suffering from TB and attending school simultaneously.

Project description:With the rapid development of digital technology, the digital economy has become an important force to promote economic growth and drive innovation, and to enhance economic quality and ecological efficiency through green finance. Additionally, green finance, as an important means to achieve resource and environmental sustainability, has received increasing attention and importance from the international community. This study explores how the digital economy and green finance contribute to economic resilience using panel data from 30 provinces and cities in China from to 2011-2023. The development of the digital economy can effectively promote economic resilience, and green finance plays a significant mediating role between the digital economy and economic resilience. In this regard, China's economic resilience must be enhanced by strengthening the construction of digital infrastructure, promoting innovation and the development of green finance, and formulating a policy environment conducive to the development of green finance.

Project description:BACKGROUND:In China, the disease burden of cervical cancer remains substantial. Human papillomavirus (HPV) vaccines are expensive and not yet centrally funded. To inform immunization policy, understanding the economic burden of the disease is necessary. This study adopted a societal perspective and investigated costs and quality of life changes associated with cervical cancer from diagnosis to one year after final discharge in Henan province, China. METHODS:Inpatient records of cervical cancer patients admitted to the largest cancer hospital in Henan province between Jan. 2017 and Dec. 2018 were extracted. A telephone interview with four modules was conducted in Jun.-Jul. 2019 with a 40% random draw of patients to obtain direct non-medical costs and indirect costs associated with inpatients, costs associated with outpatient visits, and changes in quality of life status using the EQ-5D-5L instrument. Direct medical expenditures were converted to opportunity costs of care using cost-to-charge ratios obtained from hospital financial reports. For each clinical stage (IA-IV), total costs per case from diagnosis to one year after final discharge were extrapolated based on inpatient records, responses to the telephone interview, and recommendation on outpatient follow-ups by Chinese cervical cancer treatment guidelines. Loss in quality-adjusted life years was obtained using the 'under the curve' method and regression predictions. RESULTS:A total of 3,506 inpatient records from 1,323 patients were obtained. Among 541 randomly selected patients, 309 completed at least one module of the telephone interview. The average total costs per case associated with cervical cancer from diagnosis to one year after final discharge ranged from $8,066-$22,888 (in 2018 US Dollar) and the quality-adjusted life years loss varied from 0.05-0.26 for IA-IV patients. CONCLUSIONS:The economic burden associated with cervical cancer is substantial in Henan province. Our study provided important baseline information for cost-effectiveness analysis of HPV immunization program in China.
