Copper-catalysed low-temperature water-gas shift reaction for selective deuteration of aryl halides.

ABSTRACT: The introduction of deuterium atoms into organic compounds is of importance for basic chemistry, material sciences, and the development of drugs in the pharmaceutical industry, specifically for identification and quantification of metabolites. Hence, methodologies for the synthesis of selectively labelled compounds continue to be a major area of interest for many scientists. Herein, we present a practical and stable heterogeneous copper catalyst, which permits for dehalogenative deuteration via water-gas shift reaction at comparably low temperature. This novel approach allows deuteration of diverse (hetero)aryl halides with good functional group tolerance, and no reduction of the aromatic rings or other easily reducible formyl and cyano groups. Multi-gram experiments show the potential of this method in organic synthesis and medicinal chemistry.

Pd-catalyzed deuteration of aryl halides with deuterium oxide.

Project description:Late-stage deuteration of aryl halides with deuterium oxide is a highly desirable but challenging transformation, primarily due to the difficulty of activating inert carbon-halogen bonds and the umpolung of deuterium oxide in the presence of various functional groups. To achieve this transformation, efforts have been made to develop photo-chemical, electro-chemical, or mechano-chemical strategies. However, these approaches often require specialized setups or activated substrates. Despite the well-known functional group tolerance of palladium catalysis, which makes it valuable in late-stage functionalization, a palladium-catalyzed deuteration of aryl halides with deuterium oxide has remained elusive. Herein, a deuteration reaction of aryl bromides, chlorides, and triflates with deuterium oxide has been developed, through palladium catalysis. Chemical equivalent amount of D2O is required for inert substrates like aryl chlorides. The reaction features high functional group tolerance, making it suitable for late-stage deuteration.

Partially sintered copper‒ceria as excellent catalyst for the high-temperature reverse water gas shift reaction.

Project description:For high-temperature catalytic reaction, it is of significant importance and challenge to construct stable active sites in catalysts. Herein, we report the construction of sufficient and stable copper clusters in the copper‒ceria catalyst with high Cu loading (15 wt.%) for the high-temperature reverse water gas shift (RWGS) reaction. Under very harsh working conditions, the ceria nanorods suffered a partial sintering, on which the 2D and 3D copper clusters were formed. This partially sintered catalyst exhibits unmatched activity and excellent durability at high temperature. The interaction between the copper and ceria ensures the copper clusters stably anchored on the surface of ceria. Abundant in situ generated and consumed surface oxygen vacancies form synergistic effect with adjacent copper clusters to promote the reaction process. This work investigates the structure-function relation of the catalyst with sintered and inhomogeneous structure and explores the potential application of the sintered catalyst in C1 chemistry.

Palladium-catalysed C-H arylation of benzophospholes with aryl halides.

Project description:A palladium-catalysed C-H arylation of benzophospholes with aryl halides has been developed. The reaction with aryl iodides and bromides proceeds well even under phosphine ligand-free Pd(OAc)2 catalysis whereas the Pd(PCy3)2 is effective for the coupling with less reactive aryl chlorides. The optimal conditions are also applicable to the double arylations with organic dihalides and annulation reaction with ortho-dihalogenated benzenes, making the corresponding benzophosphole-based acceptor-donor-acceptor-type molecules and highly condensed heteroacene-type molecules of potent interest in materials chemistry. Although there are many reports of catalytic C-H functionalisations of related benzoheteroles such as indoles, benzothiophenes, and benzofurans, this is the first successful example of the catalytic direct C-H transformation of benzophospholes, to the best of our knowledge. The preliminary optoelectronic properties of some newly synthesized benzophosphole derivatives are also investigated.

Amide synthesis via nickel-catalysed reductive aminocarbonylation of aryl halides with nitroarenes.

Project description:Aminocarbonylation of aryl halides is one of the most useful methods in amide synthesis, but nitroarenes have not been used as a nitrogen source in this method even though they are more economical and accessible than anilines. Reported here is the development of nickel catalysis for the first three-component reactions of aryl halides, Co2(CO)8, and nitroarenes under reductive conditions to produce aryl amides. A wide range of (hetero)aryl iodides and bromides as well as nitro(hetero)arenes are suitable reaction partners, and high functional group compatibility has been achieved. The method might be used for the streamlined synthesis of aryl amides.

The most active Cu facet for low-temperature water gas shift reaction.

Project description:Identification of the active site is important in developing rational design strategies for solid catalysts but is seriously blocked by their structural complexity. Here, we use uniform Cu nanocrystals synthesized by a morphology-preserved reduction of corresponding uniform Cu2O nanocrystals in order to identify the most active Cu facet for low-temperature water gas shift (WGS) reaction. Cu cubes enclosed with {100} facets are very active in catalyzing the WGS reaction up to 548 K while Cu octahedra enclosed with {111} facets are inactive. The Cu-Cu suboxide (CuxO, x ≥ 10) interface of Cu(100) surface is the active site on which all elementary surface reactions within the catalytic cycle proceed smoothly. However, the formate intermediate was found stable at the Cu-CuxO interface of Cu(111) surface with consequent accumulation and poisoning of the surface at low temperatures. Thereafter, Cu cubes-supported ZnO catalysts are successfully developed with extremely high activity in low-temperature WGS reaction.Nanocrystals display a variety of facets with different catalytic activity. Here the authors identify the most active facet of copper nanocrystals relevant to the low-temperature water gas shift reaction and further design zinc oxide-copper nanocubes with exceptionally high catalytic activity.

Room-temperature electrochemical water-gas shift reaction for high purity hydrogen production.

Project description:Traditional water-gas shift reaction provides one primary route for industrial production of clean-energy hydrogen. However, this process operates at high temperatures and pressures, and requires additional separation of H2 from products containing CO2, CH4 and residual CO. Herein, we report a room-temperature electrochemical water-gas shift process for direct production of high purity hydrogen (over 99.99%) with a faradaic efficiency of approximately 100%. Through rational design of anode structure to facilitate CO diffusion and PtCu catalyst to optimize CO adsorption, the anodic onset potential is lowered to almost 0 volts versus the reversible hydrogen electrode at room temperature and atmospheric pressure. The optimized PtCu catalyst achieves a current density of 70.0 mA cm-2 at 0.6 volts which is over 12 times that of commercial Pt/C (40 wt.%) catalyst, and remains stable for even more than 475 h. This study opens a new and promising route of producing high purity hydrogen.

NHC-Copper Mediated Ligand-Directed Radiofluorination of Aryl Halides.

Project description:[18F]-labeled aryl fluorides are widely used as radiotracers for positron emission tomography (PET) imaging. Aryl halides (ArX) are particularly attractive precursors to these radiotracers, as they are readily available, inexpensive, and stable. However, to date, the direct preparation of [18F]-aryl fluorides from aryl halides remains limited to SNAr reactions between highly activated ArX substrates and K18F. This report describes an aryl halide radiofluorination reaction in which the C(sp2)-18F bond is formed via a copper-mediated pathway. Copper N-heterocyclic carbene complexes serve as mediators for this transformation, using aryl halide substrates with directing groups at the ortho position. This reaction is applied to the radiofluorination of electronically diverse aryl halide derivatives, including the bioactive molecules vismodegib and PH089.

Project description:N,N-Dimethylformamide-stabilised Pd nanocluster (NC) catalysed cross-coupling reactions of hydrosilane/disilane have been investigated. In this reaction, the coupling reaction proceeds without ligands with low catalyst loading. N,N-Dimethylacetamide is a crucial solvent in these reactions. The solvent effect was considered by various techniques, such as transmission electron microscopy, X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy, and thermogravimetric analysis. The Pd NCs can be recycled five times under both hydrosilane and disilane reaction conditions.

Deuteration-Induced Volume Phase Transition Temperature Shift of PNIPMAM Microgels.

Project description:The effect of deuteration on the volume phase transition (VPT) temperature of poly (N-isopropylmethacrylamide) (pNIPMAM) microgels in aqueous suspension is determined via IR spectroscopy and size measurements by photon correlation spectroscopy (PCS). We study the effect of a hydrogenated and a deuterated solvent (H₂O/D₂O), and of the hydrogenated and (partially) deuterated monomer. Deuteration of the monomer or copolymerization with deuterated monomers shifts the volume phase transition temperature (VPTT) by up to 8.4 K to higher temperatures, in good agreement with known results for pNIPAM microgels. Moreover, the shape of the swelling curve is found to depend on deuteration, with the highest deuteration leading to the sharpest VPT. Finally, the quantitative agreement between FTIR spectroscopy and PCS evidences the spatial homogeneity of the microgel particles. Our results are rationalized in terms of the effect of deuteration on hydrogen bonding. They shall be of primary importance for any experimental measurements close to the VPT involving isotopic substitution, and in particular contrast variation small angle neutron scattering.

Reversible Growth of Gold Nanoparticles in the Low-Temperature Water-Gas Shift Reaction.

Project description:Supported gold nanoparticles are widely studied catalysts and are among the most active known for the low-temperature water-gas shift reaction, which is essential in fuel and energy applications, but their practical application has been limited by their poor thermal stability. The catalysts deactivate on-stream via the growth of small Au nanoparticles. Using operando X-ray absorption and in situ scanning transmission electron microscopy, we report direct evidence that this process can be reversed by carrying out a facile oxidative treatment, which redisperses the gold nanoparticles and restores catalytic activity. The use of in situ methods reveals the complex dynamics of supported gold nanoparticles under reaction conditions and demonstrates that gold catalysts can be easily regenerated, expanding their scope for practical application.
