Silent versus Reading Out Loud modes: An eye-tracking study.

ABSTRACT: The main purpose of this study is to compare the silent and loud reading ability of typical and dyslexic readers, using eye-tracking technology to monitor the reading process. The participants (156 students of normal intelligence) were first divided into three groups based on their school grade, and each subgroup was then further separated into typical readers and students diagnosed with dyslexia. The students read the same text twice, one time silently and one time out loud. Various eye-tracking parameters were calculated for both types of reading. In general, the performance of the typical students was better for both modes of reading - regardless of age. In the older age groups, typical readers performed better at silent reading. The dyslexic readers in all age groups performed better at reading out loud. However, this was less prominent in secondary and upper secondary dyslexics, reflecting a slow shift towards silent reading mode as they age. Our results confirm that the eye-tracking parameters of dyslexics improve with age in both silent and loud reading, and their reading preference shifts slowly towards silent reading. Typical readers, before 4th grade do not show a clear reading mode preference, however, after that age they develop a clear preference for silent reading.

Project description:Scientific illustrations play an important role in scientific texts, however, young readers show limited ability to use illustration information and integrate it with the text in multimedia learning. The primary goal of the present study was to investigate if strategy instructions for illustrated text reading focused on scientific illustration reading and text-illustration integration can help young readers overcome their deficiencies and change their reading processes, learning outcomes, and subjective perceptions of article difficulty and enjoyment, illustration enjoyment, and self-evaluation of learning. Besides, is subjective perception of the article related to reading behavior? Sixty-two fourth-grade students read an illustrated science text while their eye movements were recorded, and then completed a reading test and questionnaire. The instruction group outperformed the control group on the reading test, but subjective perceptions of the article did not differ between groups. Eye-movements analysis showed that the instruction group spent twice as much time reading the illustrations and made more saccades between relevant text and illustration sections than the control group. These findings indicate that strategy instructions for reading illustrated text promoted reading comprehension and changed learning processes, not subjective perceptions. In addition, the result of this study showed that there was no relationship between subjective perception (article difficulty or illustrations enjoyment) of the article and reading time (total reading time on the illustrated science text and on the science illustrations). This study had empirical and practical contributions. Empirically, this study developed the instruction methods in multimedia learning and further examined their effect on learning processes in young readers. Practically, this study can help elementary school teachers understand the processes used by young readers when reading illustrated texts and provide them with evidence-based instructions to teach science reading effectively.

Project description:BackgroundTo study whether oral presentation (OP) assessment could reflect the novice learners' interpretation skills and reading behaviour on brain computed tomography (CT) reading.MethodsEighty fifth-year medical students were recruited, received a 2-hour interactive workshop on how to read brain CT, and were assigned to read two brain CT images before and after instruction. We evaluated their image reading behaviour in terms of overall OP post-test rating, the lesion identification, and competency in systematic image reading after instruction. Students' reading behaviour in searching for the target lesions were recorded by the eye-tracking technique and were used to validate the accuracy of lesion reports. Statistical analyses, including lag sequential analysis (LSA), linear mixed models, and transition entropy (TE) were conducted to reveal temporal relations and spatial complexity of systematic image reading from the eye movement perspective.ResultsThe overall OP ratings [pre-test vs. post-test: 0 vs. 1 in case 1, 0 vs. 1 in case 2, p < 0.001] improved after instruction. Both the scores of systematic OP ratings [0 vs.1 in both cases, p < 0.001] and eye-tracking studies (Case 1: 3.42 ± 0.62 and 3.67 ± 0.37 in TE, p = 0.001; Case 2: 3.42 ± 0.76 and 3.75 ± 0.37 in TE, p = 0.002) showed that the image reading behaviour changed before and after instruction. The results of linear mixed models suggested a significant interaction between instruction and area of interests for case 1 (p < 0.001) and case 2 (p = 0.004). Visual attention to the target lesions in the case 1 assessed by dwell time were 506.50 ± 509.06 and 374.38 ± 464.68 milliseconds before and after instruction (p = 0.02). However, the dwell times in the case 2, the fixation counts and the frequencies of accurate lesion diagnoses in both cases did not change after instruction.ConclusionOur results showed OP performance may change concurrently with the medical students' reading behaviour on brain CT after a structured instruction.

Project description:Abnormal eye movements occur early in the course of disease in many ataxias. However, clinical assessments of oculomotor function lack precision, limiting sensitivity for measuring progression and the ability to detect subtle early signs. Quantitative assessment of eye movements during everyday behaviors such as reading has potential to overcome these limitations and produce functionally relevant measures. In this study, we analyze eye movements in individuals with ataxia during passage reading. Binocular gaze sampled at 1000 Hz was collected from 102 individuals with ataxia diagnoses (including 36 spinocerebellar ataxias, 12 Friedreich's ataxia, and 5 multiple system atrophy among other conditions) and 70 healthy controls participating in the Neurobooth study. Longitudinal data were available for 26 participants with ataxia. Saccades were categorized as progressive (rightward) saccades, regressive saccades, or sweeps (large displacement saccades primarily generated when scanning to the beginning of the next line) based on their direction and displacement. Saccade and fixation kinematics were summarized using 28 statistical features. A linear model was trained to estimate clinician-performed ataxia rating scale scores. Model scores were reliable (ICC=0.96, p<0.001) and demonstrated convergent validity with Brief Ataxia Rating Scale total (r=0.82, p<0.001), oculomotor (r=0.52, p<0.001), and speech (r=0.73, p<0.001) scores, as well as patient surveys. The scores were also sensitive to disease progression (d=0.36, p=0.03), demonstrated strong separability between healthy controls and participants with ataxias (AUC=0.89, p<0.001), and showed evidence of the ability to detect subclinical oculomotor patterns (AUC=0.69, p=0.02). Several kinematic saccade and fixation features demonstrated strong differences across disease severity groups. Notable features included the mean angular displacement of fixations (η 2=0.44, p<0.001), the number (η 2=0.27, p<0.001) and frequency of saccades (η 2=0.25, p<0.001), and the proportion of regressive saccades (η 2=0.11, p<0.001). Quantitative assessment of eye movements during passage reading were highly informative of ataxia severity, were sensitive to disease progression, and enabled detection of subclinical signs. These properties support the inclusion of video-oculography-based measures of reading in natural history studies and clinical trials. Furthermore, this study demonstrates the feasibility of integration of oculomotor assessments in clinical workflows.

Project description:The interpretation of medical images is an error-prone process that may yield severe consequences for patients. In dental medicine panoramic radiography (OPT) is a frequently used diagnostic procedure. OPTs typically contain multiple, diverse anomalies within one image making the diagnostic process very demanding, rendering students' development of visual expertise a complex task. Radiograph interpretation is typically taught through massed practice; however, it is not known how effective this approach is nor how it changes students' visual inspection of radiographs. Therefore, this study investigated how massed practice-an instructional method that entails massed learning of one type of material-affects processing of OPTs and the development of diagnostic performance. From 2017 to 2018, 47 dental students in their first clinical semester diagnosed 10 OPTs before and after their regular massed practice training, which is embedded in their curriculum. The OPTs contained between 3 to 26 to-be-identified anomalies. During massed practice they diagnosed 100 dental radiographs without receiving corrective feedback. The authors recorded students' eye movements and assessed the number of correctly identified and falsely marked low- and high prevalence anomalies before and after massed practice. Massed practice had a positive effect on detecting anomalies especially with low prevalence (p < .001). After massed practice students covered a larger proportion of the OPTs (p < .001), which was positively related to the detection of low-prevalence anomalies (p = .04). Students also focused longer, more frequently, and earlier on low-prevalence anomalies after massed practice (ps < .001). While massed practice improved visual expertise in dental students with limited prior knowledge, there is still substantial room for improvement. The results suggest integrating massed practice with more deliberate practice, where, for example, corrective feedback is provided, and support is adapted to students' needs.
