Personality and Team Identification Predict Violent Intentions Among Soccer Supporters.

ABSTRACT: Soccer supporter violence remains a persistent global problem. The majority of research examining the psychological underpinnings of soccer supporter violence have focused primarily on the role of team identification. Relatively little research has examined the role of basic personality traits and willingness to engage in violence amongst soccer supporters. In a study amongst Swedish soccer supporters (N = 247), we examined whether honesty-humility and team identification predict violent behavioral intentions; examining if collective narcissism mediates these associations. Honesty-humility negatively predicted violent intentions, and team identification predicted violent intentions. Collective narcissism partially mediated these associations. When both Honesty-humility and team identification are accounted for though, collective narcissism did not predict violent intentions. Such findings have implications for the design of violence prevention interventions amongst soccer supporters.

Project description:BackgroundGlobal healthcare systems are increasingly being challenged by a critical shortage of nurses, which is further aggravated by suboptimal team performance and elevated turnover rates among nursing staff. Team resilience has emerged as a crucial protective factor that offers substantial benefits and the potential to improve adverse work outcomes. This study sought to elucidate the profiles of nurses' team resilience and examine their relationship with team performance and turnover intention.MethodsA total of 217 nursing teams comprising 1,618 nurses were recruited through stratified convenience sampling from five tertiary and five secondary hospitals in Shandong Province, China. Team resilience was evaluated using the Analyzing and Developing Adaptability and Performance in Teams to Enhance Resilience Scale, while team performance was measured using the Team Effectiveness Scale. Additionally, turnover intention was assessed using the self-administered question, "Have you thought of quitting the job?" Latent profile analysis was used to identify distinct profiles of team resilience. A regression analysis was conducted to examine the associations between team resilience profiles, team performance, and turnover intention.ResultsThree latent profiles of team resilience among nurses were identified: worst (Class 1, 21.659%), mid-range (Class 3, 43.318%), and best (Class 2, 35.023%). Compared with Class 1, Classes 2 (beta = 0.922, p < 0.001; odds ratio [OR] = 0.154, p < 0.001) and 3 (beta = 0.463, p < 0.001; OR = 0.258, p < 0.01) exhibited significantly better team performance and lower turnover intention.ConclusionsThis study investigated the potential profiles of nurse team resilience, identifying subgroups characterized by underperformance and elevated turnover intention. Hospital administrative decision-makers and nursing managers should enhance investment in nursing resources and strategically allocate resources as well as tailor or optimize team interventions based on the heterogeneity observed in team resilience to foster positive changes in adverse work outcomes.

Project description:IntroductionSeveral studies demonstrated that the hypothalamic-pituitary-adrenal (HPA) axis is dysregulated in suicide attempters. Prospective studies found that people with an abnormal response at the dexamethasone suppression test (DST) are more likely to commit suicide. However, whether DST may predict suicide attempts remains less clear. A possible strategy to address this question is to consider the suicide attempt lethality.Objectives(1) To compare the pre- and post-DST cortisol levels in serious/violent suicide attempters and in non-serious/non-violent suicide attempters, and (2) to investigate whether cortisol level can predict new suicide attempts or their lethality.MethodsThe study included 70 recent suicide attempters (25 with a serious or violent attempt) who were followed for two years. Three saliva samples for cortisol measurement were obtained at 8a.m., 3p.m., and 9p.m. before the DST (pre-DST). Then, at 11 p.m., 1 mg of dexamethasone was given orally. The following day (post-DST), three saliva samples were collected at the same hours as before. The post-DST-pre-DST salivary cortisol Δ index was calculated for each collection time. The Risk-Rescue Ratio Scale (RRRS) and the Suicidal Intent Scale (SIS) were used to characterize the suicide attempt at inclusion and those occurring during the follow-up.ResultsPost-DST cortisol level at 9 p.m. was higher in patients with an initial violent or serious suicide attempt than in non-violent/non-serious attempters (p < .010). Higher post-DST cortisol at 9p.m. was associated with lower RRRS rescue score and higher clinical impression of suicide severity at inclusion. Among the 66 patients who completed the follow-up, 26 attempted suicide again at least once. Higher pre-DST cortisol at 8a.m. predicted new suicide attempts during the follow-up (OR = 2.15 [1.11, 4.15]), and higher cortisol Δ index at 9p.m. was associated with higher suicide intent during the follow-up.ConclusionsOur results suggest that HPA axis hyper-reactivity monitored with the DST is a marker of violent/serious suicide attempt with lower rescue possibility. Furthermore, higher changes between pre-DST and post-DST cortisol levels may predict higher suicide intent. These findings might help to characterize the biological features of nearest suicide phenotypes.
