The genus <i>Nothofagus</i> is one of the most abundant in the subantarctic Patagonian forests. Five species inhabit these ecosystems, three evergreen (<i>Nothofagus betuloides</i>, <i>Nothofagus dombeyi</i>, and <i>Nothofagus nitida</i>) and two deciduous (<i>Nothofagus pumilio</i> and <i>Nothofagus antarctica</i>).
