Method for High-Yield Hydrothermal Growth of Silica Shells on Nanoparticles.

ABSTRACT: Coating processes are commonly used in materials science to protect a core or modify material properties. We describe a hydrothermal coating process using TEOS (tetraethyl orthosilicate), a widely used precursor for silica coatings, on three representative template materials (carbon nanotubes, silica, and polystyrene nanoparticles) with different properties and shapes. We compare the efficiency of previously published protocols for silica coatings at room temperature and atmospheric pressure with the hydrothermal process at 160 °C and 3 bar. The hydrothermal method achieves higher yields and thicker silica coatings with the same amount of precursor when compared to the conventional way, thus offering higher effectiveness. Furthermore, the hydrothermal coating process yields more homogeneous shells with a higher density, making hydrothermal coating the method of choice when mechanical integrity and low permeability of the coating are required.

Project description:Lanthanide-doped upconversion nanoparticles have emerged as attractive candidates for biomedical applications. This is due to their excitation and emission wavelengths, which lay the foundation for deeper penetration depth into biological tissue, higher resolution due to reduced scattering and improved imaging contrast as a result of a decrease in autofluorescence background. Usually, their encapsulation within a biocompatible silica shell is a requirement for their dispersion within complex media or for further functionalization of the upconversion nanoparticle surface. However, the creation of a silica shell around upconversion nanoparticles can be often challenging, many times resulting in partial silica coating or nanoparticle aggregation, as well as the production of a large number of silica particles as a side product. In this work we demonstrate a method to accurately predict the experimental conditions required to form a high yield of silica-coated upconversion nanoparticles, regardless of their shape and size.

Templated Growth of Surface Enhanced Raman Scattering-Active Branched Gold Nanoparticles within Radial Mesoporous Silica Shells.

Project description:Noble metal nanoparticles are widely used as probes or substrates for surface enhanced Raman scattering (SERS), due to their characteristic plasmon resonances in the visible and near-IR spectral ranges. Aiming at obtaining a versatile system with high SERS performance, we developed the synthesis of quasi-monodisperse, nonaggregated gold nanoparticles protected by radial mesoporous silica shells. The radial mesoporous channels were used as templates for the growth of gold tips branching out from the cores, thereby improving the plasmonic performance of the particles while favoring the localization of analyte molecules at high electric field regions: close to the tips, inside the pores. The method, which additionally provides control over tip length, was successfully applied to gold nanoparticles with various shapes, leading to materials with highly efficient SERS performance. The obtained nanoparticles are stable in ethanol and water upon thermal consolidation and can be safely stored as a powder.

Adenosine-Monophosphate-Assisted Homogeneous Silica Coating of Silver Nanoparticles in High Yield.

Project description:In this study, we propose a novel approach for the silica coating of silver nanoparticles based on surface modification with adenosine monophosphate (AMP). Upon AMP stabilization, the nanoparticles can be transferred into 2-propanol, promoting the growth of silica on the particle surfaces through the standard Stöber process. The obtained silica shells are uniform and homogeneous, and the method allows a high degree of control over shell thickness while minimizing the presence of uncoated NPs or the negligible presence of core-free silica NPs. In addition, AMP-functionalized AgNPs could be also coated with a mesoporous silica shell using cetyltrimethylammonium chloride (CTAC) as a template. Interestingly, the thickness of the mesoporous silica coating could be tightly adjusted by either the silica precursor concentration or by varying the CTAC concentration while keeping the silica precursor concentration constant. Finally, the influence of the silica coating on the antimicrobial effect of AgNPs was studied on Gram-negative bacteria (R. gelatinosus and E. coli) and under different bacterial growth conditions, shedding light on their potential applications in different biological environments.

A Versatile Interfacial Coassembly Method for Fabrication of Tunable Silica Shells with Radially Aligned Dual Mesopores on Diverse Magnetic Core Nanoparticles.

Project description:Anisotropic magnetic nanoparticles with a mesoporous silica shell have the combined merits of a magnetic core and a robust shell. Preparation of magnetically guidable core-shell nanostructures with a robust silica shell that contains well-defined, large, radially aligned silica pores is challenging, and hence this has rarely been described in detail. Herein, a dynamic soft-templating strategy is developed to controllably synthesize hierarchical, dual-mesoporous silica shells on diverse core nanoparticles, in terms of nanoparticle shape (i.e., spherical, chainlike, and disclike), magnetic properties (i.e., hard magnetic and superparamagnetic), and dimensions (i.e., from 3 nm to submicrometers). The developed interfacial coassembly method allows easy design of applicable silica shells containing tunable pore geometries with pore sizes ranging from below 5 nm to above 40 nm, with a specific surface area of 577 m2 g-1 and pore volume of 1.817 cm3 g-1. These are the highest values reported for magnetically guidable anisotropic nanoparticles. The versatility of the method is shown by transfer of the coating procedure to core particles as diverse as spherical superparamagnetic nanoparticles and their clusters as well as by ferromagnetic 3 nm thick hexaferrite nanoplatelets. This method can serve as a general approach for the fabrication of well-designed mesoporous silica coatings on a wide variety of core nanoparticles.

Facile One-Pot Synthesis of Nickel Nanoparticles by Hydrothermal Method.

Project description:The one-pot synthesis process has emerged as an economical synthesis method without the involvement of purification or formation of intermediate compounds. Therefore, nickel nanoparticles were selectively synthesized by a simple hydrothermal method using nickel(II) chloride hexahydrate and borane-ammonia complex as a precursor and reducing agent, respectively. The morphology and crystal growth were observed by controlling the precursor concentration ratio of Ni:AB from 1:0.1 to 1:4 under various temperatures ranging from 80 to 140 degrees. In addition, we observed that the crystal growth rate under the influence of NaCl and KCl resulted in spherical Ni particles with size distributions controlled in the range of 297.65 nm to 1082.15 nm and 358.6 nm to 605 nm, respectively.

Fabrication of perforated sub-micron silica shells.

Project description:A new synthetic approach for fabrication of perforated hollow silica morphologies using colloidal template assemblies is demonstrated. As proof-of-principle, the polystyrene/silver colloidal assemblies had chemically modified surfaces. The template dissolution resulted in the fabrication of the submicron perforated hollow silica shells. The morphologies are characterized by transmission electron microscopy, energy dispersive spectroscopy and plasmon light extinction spectrophotometry.

Macrophage response to silica nanoparticles

Project description:Using a macrophage cell line, we demonstrate the ability of amorphous silica particles to stimulate inflammatory protein secretion and induce cytotoxicity. Whole genome microarray analysis of early gene expression changes induced by 10nm and 500nm particles showed that the magnitude of change for the majority of genes correlated more tightly with particle surface area than either particle mass or number. Gene expression changes that were size-specific were also identified, however the overall biological processes represented by all gene expression changes were nearly identical, irrespective of particle diameter. Our results suggest that on an equivalent nominal surface area basis, common biological modes of action are expected for nano- and supranano-sized silica particles. Keywords: Dose-response study

Silica diatom shells tailored with Au nanoparticles enable sensitive analysis of molecules for biological, safety and environment applications.

Project description:Diatom shells are a natural, theoretically unlimited material composed of silicon dioxide, with regular patterns of pores penetrating through their surface. For their characteristics, diatom shells show promise to be used as low cost, highly efficient drug carriers, sensor devices or other micro-devices. Here, we demonstrate diatom shells functionalized with gold nanoparticles for the harvesting and detection of biological analytes (bovine serum albumin-BSA) and chemical pollutants (mineral oil) in low abundance ranges, for applications in bioengineering, medicine, safety, and pollution monitoring.

A Deprotection-free Method for High-yield Synthesis of Graphdiyne Powder with In Situ Formed CuO Nanoparticles.

Project description:With a direct band gap, superior charge carrier mobility, and uniformly distributed pores, graphdiyne (GDY) has stimulated tremendous interest from the scientific community. However, its broad application is greatly limited by the complicated multistep synthesis process including complex deprotection of hexakis-[(trimethylsilyl)ethynyl]benzene (HEB-TMS) and peeling of GDY from the substrates. Here, we describe a deprotection-free strategy to prepare GDY powder by directly using HEB-TMS as the monomer. When CuCl was used as the catalysts in DMF solvent, the yield of GDY powder reached ≈100 %. More interestingly, uniformly dispersed CuO nanoparticles with an average diameter of ≈2.9 nm were in situ formed on GDY after the reaction. The prepared CuO/GDY was demonstrated an excellent co-catalyst for photocatalytic hydrogen evolution, comparable to the state-of-art Pt co-catalyst. The deprotection-free approach will widen the use of GDY and facilitate its scaling up to industrial level.

The impact of aminated surface ligands and silica shells on the stability, uptake, and toxicity of engineered silver nanoparticles.

Project description:Inherent nanomaterial characteristics, composition, surface chemistry, and primary particle size, are known to impact particle stability, uptake, and toxicity. Nanocomposites challenge our ability to predict nanoparticle reactivity in biological systems if they are composed of materials with contrasting relative toxicities. We hypothesized that toxicity would be dominated by the nanoparticle surface (shell vs core), and that modulating the surface ligands would have a direct impact on uptake. We exposed developing zebrafish (Danio rerio) to a series of ~70 nm amine-terminated silver nanoparticles with silica shells (AgSi NPs) to investigate the relative influence of surface amination, composition, and size on toxicity. Like-sized aminated AgSi and Si NPs were more toxic than paired hydroxyl-terminated nanoparticles; however, both AgSi NPs were more toxic than the Si NPs, indicating a significant contribution of the silver core to the toxicity. Incremental increases in surface amination did not linearly increase uptake and toxicity, but did have a marked impact on dispersion stability. Mass-based exposure metrics initially supported the hypothesis that smaller nanoparticles (20 nm) would be more toxic than larger particles (70 nm). However, surface area-based metrics revealed that toxicity was independent of size. Our studies suggest that nanoparticle surfaces play a critical role in the uptake and toxicity of AgSi NPs, while the impact of size may be a function of the exposure metric used. Overall, uptake and toxicity can be dramatically altered by small changes in surface functionalization or exposure media. Only after understanding the magnitude of these changes, can we begin to understand the biologically available dose following nanoparticle exposure.
