C-H Bond Cleavage by Bioinspired Nonheme Metal Complexes.

ABSTRACT: The functionalization of C-H bonds is one of the most challenging transformations in synthetic chemistry. In biology, these processes are well-known and are achieved with a variety of metalloenzymes, many of which contain a single metal center within their active sites. The most well studied are those with Fe centers, and the emerging experimental data show that high-valent iron oxido species are the intermediates responsible for cleaving the C-H bond. This Forum Article describes the state of this field with an emphasis on nonheme Fe enzymes and current experimental results that provide insights into the properties that make these species capable of C-H bond cleavage. These parameters are also briefly considered in regard to manganese oxido complexes and Cu-containing metalloenzymes. Synthetic iron oxido complexes are discussed to highlight their utility as spectroscopic and mechanistic probes and reagents for C-H bond functionalization. Avenues for future research are also examined.

Regulating the Basicity of Metal-Oxido Complexes with a Single Hydrogen Bond and Its Effect on C-H Bond Cleavage.

Project description:The functionalization of C-H bonds is an essential reaction in biology and chemistry. Metalloenzymes that often exhibit this type of reactivity contain metal-oxido intermediates that are directly involved in the initial cleavage of the C-H bonds. Regulation of the cleavage process is achieved, in part, by hydrogen bonds that are proximal to the metal-oxido units, yet our understanding of their exact role(s) is still emerging. To gain further information into the role of H-bonds on C-H bond activation, a hybrid set of urea-containing tripodal ligands has been developed in which a single H-bond can be adjusted through changes in the properties of one ureayl N-H bond. This modularity is achieved by appending a phenyl ring with different para-substituents from one ureayl NH group. The ligands have been used to prepare a series of MnIII-oxido complexes, and a Hammett correlation was found between the pKa values of the complexes and the substituents on the phenyl ring that was explained within the context of changes to the H-bonds involving the MnIII-oxido unit. The complexes were tested for their reactivity toward 9,10-dihydroanthracene (DHA), and a Hammett correlation was found between the second-order rate constants for the reactions and the pKa values. Studies to determine activation parameters and the kinetic isotope effects are consistent with a mechanism in which rate-limiting proton transfer is an important contributor. However, additional reactivity studies with xanthene found a significant increase in the rate constant compared to DHA, even though the substrates have the same pKa(C-H) values. These results do not support a discrete proton-transfer/electron-transfer process, but rather an asynchronous mechanism in which the proton and electron are transferred unequally at the transition state.

To Bond or Not to Bond: Metal-Metal Interaction in Heterobimetallic Rare-Earth Metal-Silver Complexes.

Project description:The reaction of 2,4-tBu2-6-(PPh2)PhOH (HOArP) with silver(I) triflate in a 3:1 molar ratio gave the mononuclear coinage metal complex (HOArP-κP)3AgIOTf (1). Treatment of HOArP with LnIII[N(SiMe3)2]3 (Ln = La, Sm, Y, Yb) in a 3:1 molar ratio yielded the mononuclear rare-earth metal complexes LnIII(OArP-κ2O,P)3 (2-Ln). The heterobimetallic rare-earth metal-silver complexes LnIII(OTf)(μ-OArP-1κ1O,2κ1P)3AgI (3-Ln) were prepared from monometallic precursors by reactions of equimolar amounts of 1 with LnIII[N(SiMe3)2]3 or 2-Ln with silver(I) triflate, respectively. The compounds were characterized by NMR, ultraviolet-visible (UV-vis), and infrared (IR) spectroscopy, single-crystal X-ray diffraction, elemental analysis, and the effective magnetic moments of the paramagnetic complexes were determined via the Evans NMR method. Computational studies were conducted on 3-La and 3-Y.

Heterolytic O-O Bond Cleavage Upon Single Electron Transfer to a Nonheme Fe(III)-OOH Complex.

Project description:The one-electron reduction of the nonheme iron(III)-hydroperoxo complex, [FeIII (OOH)(L5 2 )]2+ (L5 2 =N-methyl-N,N',N'-tris(2-pyridylmethyl)ethane-1,2-diamine), carried out at -70 °C results in the release of dioxygen and in the formation of [FeII (OH)(L5 2 )]+ following a bimolecular process. This reaction can be performed either with cobaltocene as chemical reductant, or electrochemically. These experimental observations are consistent with the disproportionation of the hydroperoxo group in the putative FeII (OOH) intermediate generated upon reduction of the FeIII (OOH) starting complex. One plausible mechanistic scenario is that this disproportionation reaction follows an O-O heterolytic cleavage pathway via a FeIV -oxo species.

Synthesis of Metal-Organic Cages via Orthogonal Bond Cleavage in 3D Metal-Organic Frameworks.

Project description:Herein we address the question of whether a supramolecular finite metal-organic structure such as a cage or metal-organic polyhedron (MOP) can be synthesized via controlled cleavage of a three-dimensional (3D) metal-organic structure. To demonstrate this, we report the synthesis of a Cu(II)-based cuboctahedral MOP through orthogonal olefinic bond cleavage of the cavities of a 3D, Cu(II)-based, metal-organic framework (MOF). Additionally, we demonstrate that controlling the ozonolysis conditions used for the cleavage enables Clip-off Chemistry synthesis of two cuboctahedral MOPs that differ by their external functionalization: one in which all 24 external groups represent a mixture of aldehydes, carboxylic acids, acetals and esters, and one in which all are aldehydes.

N═N Bond Cleavage by Tantalum Hydride Complexes: Mechanistic Insights and Reactivity.

Project description:The reaction of [TaCpRX4] (CpR = η5-C5Me5, η5-C5H4SiMe3, η5-C5HMe4; X = Cl, Br) with SiH3Ph resulted in the formation of the dinuclear hydride tantalum(IV) compounds [(TaCpRX2)2(μ-H)2], structurally identified by single-crystal X-ray analyses. These species react with azobenzene to give the mononuclear imide complex [TaCpRX2(NPh)] along with the release of molecular hydrogen. Analogous reactions between the [{Ta(η5-C5Me5)X2}2(μ-H)2] derivatives and the cyclic diazo reagent benzo[c]cinnoline afford the biphenyl-bridged (phenylimido)tantalum complexes [{Ta(η5-C5Me5)X2}2(μ-NC6H4C6H4N)] along with the release of molecular hydrogen. When the compounds [(TaCpRX2)2(μ-H)2] (CpR = η5-C5H4SiMe3, η5-C5HMe4; X = Cl, Br) were employed, we were able to trap the side-on-bound diazo derivatives [(TaCpRX)2{μ-(η2,η2-NC6H4C6H4N)}] (CpR = η5-C5H4SiMe3, η5-C5HMe4; X = Cl, Br) as intermediates in the N═N bond cleavage process. DFT calculations provide insights into the N═N cleavage mechanism, in which the ditantalum(IV) fragment can promote two-electron reductions of the N═N bond at two different metal-metal bond splitting stages.

Transition-metal free C-C bond cleavage/borylation of cycloketone oxime esters.

Project description:An efficient transition-metal free C-C bond cleavage/borylation of cycloketone oxime esters has been described. In this reaction, the B2(OH)4 reagent not only served as the boron source but also acted as an electron donor source through formation of a complex with a DMAc-like Lewis base. This complex could be used as an efficient single electron reductant in other ring-opening transformations of cycloketone oxime esters. Free-radical trapping, radical-clock, and DFT calculations all suggest a radical pathway for this transformation.

Alkali metal control over N-N cleavage in iron complexes.

Project description:Though N2 cleavage on K-promoted Fe surfaces is important in the large-scale Haber-Bosch process, there is still ambiguity about the number of Fe atoms involved during the N-N cleaving step and the interactions responsible for the promoting ability of K. This work explores a molecular Fe system for N2 reduction, particularly focusing on the differences in the results obtained using different alkali metals as reductants (Na, K, Rb, Cs). The products of these reactions feature new types of Fe-N2 and Fe-nitride cores. Surprisingly, adding more equivalents of reductant to the system gives a product in which the N-N bond is not cleaved, indicating that the reducing power is not the most important factor that determines the extent of N2 activation. On the other hand, the results suggest that the size of the alkali metal cation can control the number of Fe atoms that can approach N2, which in turn controls the ability to achieve N2 cleavage. The accumulated results indicate that cleaving the triple N-N bond to nitrides is facilitated by simultaneous approach of least three low-valent Fe atoms to a single molecule of N2.

Nature of Metal-Drug Bond in Some Antitumor Active Complexes of Coinage Metal Ions.

Project description:N-Heterocyclic carbene and phosphine can be labeled as solid σ-donor ligands and can contribute to stable complexes. In addition, the constructed complex can accommodate a wide variety of applications, such as pharmaceutical products. In the light of this, a theoretical analysis was carried out on the existence of metal-drug interactions of group 11 metal ions in coordination with symmetrical unsaturated N-heterocyclic carbenes [NHC(R)(R')] and monodentate phosphine (PR3). The R substitutes on N atoms in NHC and phosphines are identical, and R' substitutes are located on two noncarbenic carbon atoms (C4 and C5) in the heterocycle complexes. All complexes are in general formula, [Tgt → ML] {where M = Cu(I), Ag(I), Au(I), Tgt = 2,3,4,6-tetra-O-acetyl-1-thio-β-d-glucopyranoside, L= [NHC(R)(R')], and PR3; R = F, Cl, Br, H, CH3, C2H5, SiH3, 2,6-diisopropylphenyl; R' = H and Ph} at the PBE-D3/def2-TZVP level of theory. Findings show greater tolerance for the release of drugs in the presence of Ag(I) metal ions than the other metal ions studied here. Applying natural bond orbital (NBO), atoms in molecules (AIMs), energy decomposition analysis (EDA), and extended transition-state natural orbital for chemical valence (ETS-NOCV) analysis have been researched in order to ascertain the nature of M ← S and M ← C (M ← P) bonds in the complexes. Results have shown that σ donation from S to M atoms in [Tgt → MPR3] complexes is better and the π acceptor is weaker than the corresponding [Tgt → MNHC(R)(R')] complexes.
