Triaminocyclopentadienyl Ruthenium Complexes - New Catalysts for Cascade Conversions of Propargyl Alcohols.

ABSTRACT: Various triaminocyclopentadienyl ruthenium complexes have been synthesized from Ru₃ (CO)₁₂ . The new complexes were tested for their ability to catalyze cascade conversions of propargyl alcohols. Their associated catalytic activities complement the activities of known diaminocyclopentadienone ruthenium complexes. In particular, the substrate scope of catalytic cycloadditions with 3-ketolactones or phloroglucinol derivatives is extended to terpenoid-derived propargyl alcohols containing an internal alkyne moiety. A wide range of cyclic terpenoid and phloroglucinol adducts are obtained by complementary application of both types of catalysts.

Cyclometalated Ruthenium Pincer Complexes as Catalysts for the α-Alkylation of Ketones with Alcohols.

Project description:Ruthenium PNP pincer complexes bearing supplementary cyclometalated C,N-bound ligands have been prepared and fully characterized for the first time. By replacing CO and H- as ancillary ligands in such complexes, additional electronic and steric modifications of this topical class of catalysts are possible. The advantages of the new catalysts are demonstrated in the general α-alkylation of ketones with alcohols following a hydrogen autotransfer protocol. Herein, various aliphatic and benzylic alcohols were applied as green alkylating agents for ketones bearing aromatic, heteroaromatic or aliphatic substituents as well as cyclic ones. Mechanistic investigations revealed that during catalysis, Ru carboxylate complexes are predominantly formed whereas neither the PNP nor the CN ligand are released from the catalyst in significant amounts.

New ruthenium polypyridyl complexes as potential sensors of acetonitrile and catalysts for water oxidation.

Project description:New ruthenium(ii) polypyridyl complexes of formulae [RuCl(Me2Ntrpy)(bpy-OMe)]Cl, 1, and [Ru(Me2Ntrpy)(bpy-OMe)(OH2)](CF3SO3)2, 2, with Me2Ntrpy = 4'-N,N-dimethylamino-2,2':6',2''-terpyridine and bpy-OMe = 4,4'-dimethoxy-2,2'-bipyridine, were synthetized and characterized by spectroscopic and electrochemical techniques. Besides, [Ru(Me2Ntrpy)(bpy-OMe)(NCCH3)]2+, 3, was obtained and characterized by UV-vis spectroscopy in acetonitrile solution. All experimental results were complemented with DFT and TD-DFT calculations. The complete structure of complex 1 was determined by X-ray diffraction, evidencing that the Ru-N and Ru-Cl bond lengths are longer than those determined in [RuCl(trpy)(bpy)](PF6). The strong electron donating properties of the substituents of both bpy and trpy rings in complexes 1 and 2 led to their potential applications for detecting traces of acetonitrile as a contaminant in aqueous solutions of radiopharmaceuticals and to utilization of complex 2 as a promising candidate for catalyzing water oxidation processes.

Alkynes as allylmetal equivalents in redox-triggered C-C couplings to primary alcohols: (Z)-homoallylic alcohols via ruthenium-catalyzed propargyl C-H oxidative addition.

Project description:The cationic ruthenium catalyst generated upon the acid-base reaction of H2Ru(CO)(PPh3)3 and 2,4,6-(2-Pr)3PhSO3H promotes the redox-triggered C-C coupling of 2-alkynes and primary alcohols to form (Z)-homoallylic alcohols with good to complete control of olefin geometry. Deuterium labeling studies, which reveal roughly equal isotopic compositions at the allylic and distal vinylic positions, along with other data, corroborate a catalytic mechanism involving ruthenium(0)-mediated allene-aldehyde oxidative coupling to form a transient oxaruthenacycle, an event that ultimately defines (Z)-olefin stereochemistry.

Salicylaldimine Ruthenium Alkylidene Complexes: Metathesis Catalysts Tuned for Protic Solvents.

Project description:Tuning the electronic and steric environment of olefin metathesis catalysts with specialized ligands can adapt them to broader applications, including metathesis in aqueous solvents. Bidentate salicylaldimine ligands are known to stabilize ruthenium alkylidene complexes, as well as allow ring-closing metathesis in protic media. Here, we report the synthesis and characterization of exceptionally robust olefin metathesis catalysts bearing both bidentate salicylaldimine and N-heterocyclic carbene ligands, including a trimethylammonium-functionalized complex adapted for polar solvents. NMR spectroscopy and X-ray crystallographic analysis confirm the structures of the complexes. Although the N-heterocyclic carbene-salicylaldimine ligand combination limits the activity of these catalysts in nonpolar solvents, this pairing enables efficient ring-closing metathesis of both dienes and enynes in methanol and methanol-water mixtures under air.

Vanadium-catalyzed addition of propargyl alcohols and imines.

Project description:A Mannich-type addition of propargylic alcohols and N-methoxycarbonylimines has been achieved by using a vanadium catalyst. The reactivity of the vanadium catalyst could be modulated by modifying the silanol ligands to avoid the background reaction. The strategy described herein provides an atom-economical access to beta-aryl-substituted Z-enones with an allylic amino functional group, which are not readily accessible with other methods.

Cyclic alkyl amino carbene (CAAC) ruthenium complexes as remarkably active catalysts for ethenolysis.

Project description:An expanded family of ruthenium-based metathesis catalysts bearing cyclic alkyl amino carbene (CAAC) ligands was prepared. These catalysts exhibited exceptional activity in the ethenolysis of the seed-oil derivative methyl oleate. In many cases, catalyst turnover numbers (TONs) of more than 100,000 were achieved, at a catalyst loading of only 3 ppm. Remarkably, the most active catalyst system was able to achieve a TON of 340,000, at a catalyst loading of only 1 ppm. This is the first time a series of metathesis catalysts has exhibited such high performance in cross-metathesis reactions employing ethylene gas, with activities sufficient to render ethenolysis applicable to the industrial-scale production of linear α-olefins (LAOs) and other terminal-olefin products.

Ruthenium Catalyzed Diastereo- and Enantioselective Coupling of Propargyl Ethers with Alcohols: Siloxy-Crotylation via Hydride Shift Enabled Conversion of Alkynes to π-Allyls.

Project description:The first enantioselective carbonyl crotylations through direct use of alkynes as chiral allylmetal equivalents are described. Chiral ruthenium(II) complexes modified by Josiphos (SL-J009-1) catalyze the C-C coupling of TIPS-protected propargyl ether 1a with primary alcohols 2a-2o to form products of carbonyl siloxy-crotylation 3a-3o, which upon silyl deprotection-reduction deliver 1,4-diols 5a-5o with excellent control of regio-, anti-diastereo-, and enantioselectivity. Structurally related propargyl ethers 1b and 1c bearing ethyl- and phenyl-substituents engage in diastereo- and enantioselective coupling, as illustrated in the formation of adducts 5p and 5q, respectively. Selective mono-tosylation of diols 5a, 5c, 5e, 5f, 5k, and 5m is accompanied by spontaneous cyclization to deliver the trans-2,3-disubstituted furans 6a, 6c, 6e, 6f, 6k, and 6m, respectively. Primary alcohols 2a, 2l, and 2p were converted to the siloxy-crotylation products 3a, 3l, and 3p, which upon silyl deprotection-lactol oxidation were transformed to the trans-4,5-disubstituted γ-butyrolactones 7a, 7l, and 7p. The formation of 7p represents a total synthesis of (+)-trans-whisky lactone. Unlike closely related ruthenium catalyzed alkyne-alcohol C-C couplings, deuterium labeling studies provide clear evidence of a novel 1,2-hydride shift mechanism that converts metal-bound alkynes to π-allyls in the absence of intervening allenes.

Anticancer evaluation of new organometallic ruthenium(ii) flavone complexes.

Project description:Targeting multiple malignancy features such as angiogenesis, proliferation and metastasis with one molecule is an effective strategy in developing potent anticancer agents. Ruthenium metal complexation to bioactive scaffolds is reported to enhance their biological activities. Herein, we evaluate the impact of Ru chelation on the pharmacological activities of two bioactive flavones (1 and 2) as anticancer candidates. The novel Ru complexes (1Ru and 2Ru) caused a loss of their parent molecules' antiangiogenic activities in an endothelial cell tube formation assay. 1Ru enhanced the antiproliferative and antimigratory activities of its 4-oxoflavone 1 on MCF-7 breast cancer cells (IC50 = 66.15 ± 5 μM and 50% migration inhibition, p < 0.01 at 1 μM). 2Ru diminished 4-thioflavone's (2) cytotoxic activity on MCF-7 and MDA-MB-231 yet significantly enhanced 2's migration inhibition (p < 0.05) particularly on the MDA-MB-231 cell line. The test derivatives also showed non-intercalative interaction with VEGF and c-myc i-motif DNA sequences.

Tunable Gold-catalyzed Reactions of Propargyl Alcohols and Aryl Nucleophiles.

Project description:Gold-catalyzed transformations of 1,3-diarylpropargyl alcohols and various aryl nucleophiles were studied. Selective tunable synthetic methods were developed for 1,1,3-triarylallenes, diaryl-indenes and tetraaryl-allyl target products by C3 nucleophilic substitution and subsequent intra- or intermolecular hydroarylation, respectively. The reactions were scoped with regards to gold(I)/(III) catalysts, solvent, temperature, and electronic and steric effects of both the diarylpropargyl alcohol and the aryl nucleophiles. High yields of triaryl-allenes and diaryl-indenes by gold(III) catalysis were observed. Depending on the choice of aryl nucleophile and control of reaction temperature, different product ratios have been obtained. Alternatively, tetraaryl-allyl target products were formed by a sequential one-pot tandem process from appropriate propargyl substrates and two different aryl nucleophiles. Corresponding halo-arylation products (I and Br; up to 95 % 2-halo-diaryl-indenes) were obtained in a one-pot manner in the presence of the respective N-halosuccinimides (NIS, NBS).
