Absorptive capacity facilitates adaptation to novel environmental disasters.

ABSTRACT: Absorptive capacity-the ability to learn and apply external knowledge and information to acquire material resources-is an essential but overlooked driver in community adaptation to new and unprecedented disasters. We analyzed data from a representative random sample of 603 individuals from 25 coastal communities in Louisiana affected by the Deepwater Horizon oil spill. We used simultaneous equation models to assess the relationship between absorptive capacity and resource acquisition for affected individuals after the disaster. Results show that the diversity of individuals' prior knowledge coupled with the community's external orientation and internal cohesion facilitate resource use. They go beyond simply providing resources and demonstrate individual and community features necessary for absorbing information and knowledge and help devise adaptation strategies to address the dynamics of changing economic, social, and political environment after the disaster.

Is absorptive capacity the "panacea" for organizational development? A META analysis of absorptive capacity and firm performance from the perspective of constructivism.

Project description:There is a long-standing academic consensus that the higher the absorptive capacity of an organization is, the better its performance. Recently, however, the assumption that absorptive capacity can unconditionally contribute to firm performance has begun to be challenged, and empirical results differentiating absorptive capacity and firm performance have also begun to emerge. Therefore, to effectively integrate the variability of different empirical results and reveal the mechanism by which absorptive capacity acts on firm performance, this paper explores the relationship between absorptive capacity and firm performance from the perspectives of both theoretical exploration and META analysis. Through the process of theoretical combing, this paper finds that the existing core concept of absorptive capacity is based on cognitivism, and the existing process behind absorptive capacity is based on a linear cognitive information processing process that focuses on the internal cognitive structure and process of the subject. However, due to the dynamic and complex nature of social phenomena, the process model cannot effectively reflect the influence of contextual factors on their relationships. Next, based on the results of theoretical sorting, the results of existing empirical studies are synthesized by means of META analysis and different contexts are examined, finding that the role of absorptive capacity on firm performance has significant contextual characteristics, among which the research context, economic context and sample context all have significant but distinct moderating effects on absorptive capacity and firm performance. Overall, by including contextual factors, this paper further deepens the understanding of the relationship between absorptive capacity and firm performance. It also provides a preliminary basis for the role of contextual factors in absorptive capacity.

Strategic green marketing orientation and environmental sustainability in sub-Saharan Africa: Does green absorptive capacity moderate? Evidence from Tanzania.

Project description:Small and medium-sized enterprises are increasingly promoting environmental sustainability, a trend that has raised environmental awareness and inspired individuals and organizations to work together to create a more sustainable and greener future by implementing environmentally friendly practices. This study examines the influence of strategic green marketing orientation on environmental sustainability. Also, the study examines the moderating effect of green absorptive capacity on the relationship between strategic green marketing orientation and environmental sustainability. We used partial least squares structural equation modelling to test hypotheses with data obtained from 391 manufacturing enterprises in Tanzania via structured questionnaires. Our study's main findings show that strategic green marketing orientation has a significant and positive influence on environmental sustainability, and green absorptive capacity strengthens the positive effect of strategic green marketing orientation on environmental sustainability. Although there is scholarly interest in incorporating environmental considerations into business endeavors, there is little evidence on ways that a strategic green marketing orientation promotes environmental sustainability in a manufacturing context. Thus, our findings add to the literature on understanding environmental sustainability for manufacturing enterprises by revealing the role of strategic green marketing orientation and green absorptive capacity in explaining environmental sustainability. The study suggests that manufacturing enterprises should integrate environmental considerations into their strategic resources and endeavors to improve eco-friendly outcomes.

Differential regulation of mRNA stability modulates transcriptional memory and facilitates environmental adaptation.

Project description:Transcriptional memory, by which cells respond faster to repeated stimuli, is key for cellular adaptation and organism survival. Chromatin organization has been shown to play a role in the faster response of primed cells. However, the contribution of post-transcriptional regulation is not yet explored. Here we perform a genome-wide screen to identify novel factors modulating transcriptional memory in S. cerevisiae in response to galactose. We find that depletion of the nuclear RNA exosome increases GAL1 expression in primed cells. Our work shows that gene-specific differences in intrinsic nuclear surveillance factor association can enhance both gene induction and repression in primed cells. Finally, we show that primed cells present altered levels of RNA degradation machinery and that both nuclear and cytoplasmic mRNA decay modulate transcriptional memory. Our results demonstrate that mRNA post-transcriptional regulation, and not only transcription regulation, should be considered when investigating gene expression memory.

Information systems adoption and knowledge performance: An absorptive capacity perspective

Project description:As strategic assets for organizations, information systems (IS) have been adopted to enhance organizational knowledge performance. Based on the absorptive capacity perspective, we investigated intertwined relationships among IS adoption, organizational capabilities, IS-enabled absorptive capacity, and organizational knowledge performance. We empirically examined our model with survey data from 417 IS employees of 21 different state governments in the United States. We find that: (1) IS adoption does not directly generate IS-enabled absorptive capacity; (2) organizational capabilities positively affect IS-enabled absorptive capacity; (3) synergies arising from complementarity between IS adoption and organizational capabilities have a positive impact on IS-enabled absorptive capacity; and (4) IS-enabled absorptive capacity significantly drives manager and employee knowledge performance. This research enriches the understanding of the relationships among IS adoption, organizational capabilities, and organizational knowledge performance in U.S. public sectors.

Cognitive distance, absorptive capacity and group rationality: a simulation study.

Project description:We report the results of a simulation study in which we explore the joint effect of group absorptive capacity (as the average individual rationality of the group members) and cognitive distance (as the distance between the most rational group member and the rest of the group) on the emergence of collective rationality in groups. We start from empirical results reported in the literature on group rationality as collective group level competence and use data on real-life groups of four and five to validate a mathematical model. We then use this mathematical model to predict group level scores from a variety of possible group configurations (varying both in cognitive distance and average individual rationality). Our results show that both group competence and cognitive distance are necessary conditions for emergent group rationality. Group configurations, in which the groups become more rational than the most rational group member, are groups scoring low on cognitive distance and scoring high on absorptive capacity.

A novel adaptation facilitates seed establishment under marine turbulent flows.

Project description:Seeds of Australian species of the seagrass genus Posidonia are covered by a membranous wing that we hypothesize plays a fundamental role in seed establishment in sandy, wave swept marine environments. Dimensions of the seed and membrane were quantified under electron microscopy and micro-CT scans, and used to model rotational, drag and lift forces. Seeds maintain contact with the seabed in the presence of strong turbulence: the larger the wing, the more stable the seed. Wing surface area increases from P. sinuosa < P. australis < P.coriacea correlating with their ability to establish in increasingly energetic environments. This unique seed trait in a marine angiosperm corresponds to adaptive pressures imposed on seagrass species along 7,500 km of Australia's coastline, from open, high energy coasts to calmer environments in bays and estuaries.

Fugitive Chemicals and Environmental Justice: A Model for Environmental Monitoring Following Climate-Related Disasters.

Project description:The combination of population growth in areas of mixed (residential, commercial, and industrial) land use along U.S. waterfronts and the increasing frequency of devastating hurricanes and storm surges has led to community fears of widespread toxic chemical contamination resulting from accidental industrial or small business releases, particularly in the aftermath of an extreme weather event, such as a hurricane. Industrial waterfront communities, which are frequently environmental justice communities, contain numerous toxic chemical sources located in close proximity to residential housing, schools, daycare centers, playgrounds, and healthcare centers. Despite the longstanding concerns of community activists and researchers about the potential for "fugitive" chemicals to be released into floodwaters, there has been little coordinated research or action to develop environmental monitoring programs for disaster-affected communities. In the aftermath of Superstorm Sandy, a community-academic partnership was formed between the New York City Environmental Justice Alliance, UPROSE, The LifeLine Group, and the RAND Corporation. The collaboration, known as Grassroots Research to Action in Sunset Park (GRASP) has focused on identifying possible sources of chemical contamination, modeling the potential for chemical release into community areas and resulting exposure risks, and proactively developing actions for mitigating or preventing adverse community impacts. Through our ongoing work, we have identified barriers and drivers for community-based environmental monitoring, and in doing so, we have developed a framework to overcome challenges. In this article, we describe this framework, which can be used by waterfront communities bracing to deal with the effects of future devastating weather disasters.

GPM6B Inhibit PCa Proliferation by Blocking Prostate Cancer Cell Serotonin Absorptive Capacity.

Project description:Prostate cancer is currently one of the most common fatal tumor types in men. Although multiple treatments can alleviate some cases, advanced prostate cancer, especially CRPC, still has a very poor prognosis. Therefore, early detection and diagnosis of prostate cancer have a very important role in the prognosis of patients. Glycoprotein M6B (GPM6B) is a transmembrane protein that belongs to the proteolipid protein family. GPM6B has been proved and can be used as a biomarker for gynecological malignancies and breast carcinoma. However, there are no studies that explored the functions of GPM6B in PCa. We explored differentially expressed genes in prostate cancer by analyzing TCGA data and found GPM6B downregulated in PCa tissues compared to that in normal prostate tissues. The GPM6B expression in PCa patient's tumor tissues was significantly related to clinical stage, T classification, lymph node metastasis, and distant metastasis, but not significantly related to age and Gleason score. Also, patients with highGPM6B expression had a better prognosis. The overexpression of GPM6B in prostate cancer cells could inhibit cell proliferation. Serotonin treatment could enhance the proliferation of PCa cell lines; moreover, fluoxetine could reverse this result. In conclusion, we identified GPM6B as a tumor suppressor in PCa. In mechanism, it can regulate the uptaking of serotonin and inhibit the growth of prostate cancer. These results suggested the potential function of GPM6B as a diagnostic marker of PCa and provided clues for the development of new treatment targets for PCa.

Factors related to chromatin organization and activation of transcription have been shown to play a role in the faster response of those cells previously exposed to a stimulus (primed). However, the contribution of post-transcriptional regulation is not yet explored. Here, we perform a genome-wide characterisation of this process and explore the contribution of the nuclear mRNA surveillance (RRP6) to this process. Using S. cerevisiae as a model organism, we investigate changes in mRNA abundance, mRNA stability and chromatin organization. Our results demonstrate that mRNA post-transcriptional regulation, and not only transcription regulation, should be considered when investigating gene expression memory.
