New species of the genus Ptychoptera Meigen, 1803 (Diptera, Ptychopteridae) from Zhejiang, China with an updated key to Chinese species.

ABSTRACT: We revise the taxonomy of the genus Ptychoptera Meigen, 1803 from Zhejiang, East China. One new species from Zhejiang, P.tianmushana sp. nov., is described and illustrated. Morphologically, the new species is most similar to P.emeica Kang, Xue & Zhang, 2019 and P.formosensis Alexander, 1924, but it can be distinguished by the coloration of the abdomen and the details of the male genitalia. In addition, P.bellula Alexander, 1937 is recorded from Zhejiang for the first time. Two known species from Zhejiang, P.longwangshana Yang & Chen, 1998 and P.gutianshana Yang & Chen, 1995, are redescribed and illustrated. A key to Chinese species of Ptychoptera is provided.

P.xanthopleurasp. nov. differs from the other member of the lacustris group mainly by having almost completely yellow pleurae, and by the shape of the epandrium and gonocoxites. Project description:Three new Ptychoptera Meigen, 1803 species from southern China, P.hekouensis sp. nov., P.longa sp. nov., and P.xiaohuangshana sp. nov., are described and illustrated. These new species are mainly distinguished from congeners by their body colors and male genitalia. The genus Ptychoptera is recorded from Guangdong, China for the first time. An updated key to all Chinese Ptychoptera species is provided.

Taxonomic complexity in the genus Merodon Meigen, 1803 (Diptera, Syrphidae).

Project description:The genus Merodon Meigen, 1803 is distributed across the Palaearctic and Afrotropical Regions. The present work summarizes the knowledge from recent taxonomic and systematic revisions and includes an identification key for the five monophyletic lineages (namely albifrons, aureus, avidus-nigritarsis, desuturinus and natans), 24 species groups, two species subgroups and 10 unplaced species, along with diagnosis and illustrations. A list of 234 taxa, including 194 described and 40 undescribed species, is appended. Most of the species are distributed in the Palaearctic (209 taxa, 181 described), while 27 species (14 described) are known from the Afrotropical Region. Three lineages (aureus, desuturinus and natans) are present in the Afrotropical Region, as well as in the Palaearctic. The Afrotropical melanocerus species group of the desuturinus lineage and the bombiformis species group of the aureus lineage are endemic to the Afrotropical Region, and all other species groups belong to the Palaearctic fauna. The albifrons lineage contains six species groups (albifrons, constans, equestris, geniculatus, ruficornis and rufus) and two unplaced taxa. The aureus lineage includes five species groups (aureus, bombiformis, funestus, nanus and spinitarsis). The avidus-nigritarsis lineage is divided into 10 species groups (aberrans, aurifer, avidus, clavipes, fulcratus, italicus, nigritarsis, pruni, serrulatus and tarsatus) and eight unplaced taxa. The desuturinus lineage contains two species groups: the Afrotropical melanocerus group, with the melanocerus and planifacies subgroups plus the species M. cuthbertsoni Curran, 1939, and the Palaearctic murorum species group. The natans lineage consists of the natans species group plus the species M. segetum Fabricius, 1794.

Review of the Genus Sciara Meigen, 1803 (Diptera, Sciaridae) in Ukraine.

Project description:On the territory of Ukraine during the field seasons 2015-2022, we collected eight Sciara species-S. analis Schiner, 1864, S. flavimana Zetterstedt, 1851, S. hebes (Loew, 1869), S. helvola Winnertz, 1867, S. hemerobioides (Scopoli, 1763), S. humeralis Zetterstedt, 1851, S. incerta Winnertz, 1867 and S. ruficauda Meigen, 1818. All specimens are kept in the collections of the Schmalhausen Institute of Zoology NAS of Ukraine (SIZK). According to the results of our research, the four species S. flavimana, S. hebes, S. helvola and S. incerta are being registered for the first time in Ukraine. New localities are given for S. analis, S. hemerobioides, S. humeralis and S. ruficauda. The distribution, morphological peculiarities, ecology and phenology of registered species are also briefly discussed. A key to 12 European Sciara species is given.

Two new species of Limonia Meigen, 1803 from Northwest China (Diptera, Limoniidae).

Project description:Two new species of Limonia Meigen, 1803, Limonia medexocha sp. nov. and Limonia subcosta sp. nov. are described and illustrated from Northwest China. The following five species are re-described and reported from China for the first time: L. macrostigma (Schummel, 1829), L. phragmitidis (Schrank, 1781), L. stigma (Meigen, 1818), L. sylvicola (Schummel, 1829) and L. taurica (Strobl, 1895). A key to adult males of Limonia from Northwest China is presented.

A review of the subgenus Loxocera Meigen, 1803 (Diptera, Brachycera, Psilidae) in China.

Project description:The subgenus Loxocera (Loxocera Meigen, 1803) (Diptera, Brachycera, Psilidae) in China is reviewed. Six species are recognized, including four new species: L. (L.) chikunisp. nov., L. (L.) lonsdaleisp. nov., L. (L.) maculithoraxsp. nov., and L. (L.) obscurasp. nov. Two species originally placed in the subgenus Loxocera, L.anulata Wang & Yang, 1998 and L.tianmuensis Wang & Yang, 1998, are transferred to the subgenus Loxocera (Imantimyia Frey, 1925). A key to the species of the subgenus Loxocera occurring in China is provided.

Sequence analysis of mitochondrial genome of the false and phantom crane-fly Ptychoptera qinggouensis Kang, Yao and Yang, 2013 (Diptera, Ptychopteridae).

Project description:The genus Ptychoptera Meigen, 1803 is the largest genus of the family Ptychopteridae with 78 known species. In this study, we report a nearly complete mitochondrial (mt) genome of this genus, which is a circular molecule of more than 15,028 bp. The mt genome contains 13 protein-coding genes, 22 tRNA genes, 2 rRNA genes and a non-coding region. The overall base composition is A (38.1%), T (36.7%), C (14.9%), and G (10.4%), with an AT content of 74.8%. The AT content of N-strand genes (75.7%) is higher than that of the J-strand genes (71.7%). Phylogenetic analysis reveals that the monophyly of Ptychopteridae, Bibiomorpha, Tipulomorpha and Brachycera are strongly supported, and the sister group relationship between Tanyderidae and Ptychopteridae is not supported.

Karyotypes of Chironomus Meigen (Diptera: Chironomidae) species from Africa.

Project description:The karyotypes of six African Chironomus species (Chironomus alluaudi Kieffer, 1913, Chironomus transvaalensis Kieffer, 1923, Chironomus sp. Nakuru, Chironomus formosipennis Kieffer, 1908, Chironomus prope pulcher Wiedemann, 1830, Chironomus sp. Kisumu) were investigated; four of these karyotypes were described for the first time (Chironomus sp. Nakuru, Chironomus formosipennis, Chironomus prope pulcher, Chironomus sp. Kisumu). Of the six Chironomus karyotypes, three had "pseudothummi" cytocomplex chromosome arms combinations AE CD BF G (Chironomus alluaudi, Chironomus transvaalensis, Chironomus sp. Nakuru), two had "thummi"cytocomplex arms combinations AB CD EF G (Chironomus formosipennis, Chironomus prope pulcher), and one had "parathummi"armcombinations AC BF DE G (Chironomus sp. Kisumu). Thus, three of the ten main cytocomplexes known were detected in Africa. Detailed photomaps of all chromosome arms, with the exception of arms B and G, were prepared for the karyotypes of Chironomus alluaudi, Chironomus transvaalensis, Chironomus sp. Nakuru, Chironomus prope pulcher; the karyotypes of Chironomus formosipennis, Chironomus sp. Kisumucould only be fragmentarily mapped. Endemic African banding sequences were characteristic for most of the chromosomal arms in all species studied. However, basic sequences, which can be present in different Chironomus species on different continents (Wülker, 1980; Kiknadze et al. 2008), were also detected also in several African species (Chironomus alluaudi, Chironomus sp. Nakuru, and Chironomus formosipennis). The banding sequences of African species studied allow discussion of the derivation of modern banding patterns from hypothetical species, living before separation of cytocomplexes and continents.
