Project description:Impacts of climate change rank among the century's most significant ecological and medical concerns. As a result of climatic changes, the distribution of some bacterial species will alter across time and space. Numerous bacterial infections will reorganize as a result worldwide. Acinetobacter baumannii Bouvet and Grimont is one of the most significant and frequently occurring bacteria identified in soil and air. The COVID-19 pandemic has changed how bacteriologists perceive this species as a new threat to human health. In order to estimate the existing and future worldwide distribution of A. baumannii under various climate change scenarios, about 1000 A. baumannii occurrence records were employed. Given its superior accuracy and dependability versus alternative modeling techniques, maximum entropy implemented in MaxEnt was selected as the modeling tool. The bioclimatic variable that contributes the most to the distribution of A. baumannii is the mean temperature of the coldest quarter (bio_11). The created current distribution model agreed with the species' actual globally dispersed distribution. It is projected that A. baumannii will experience a severe range expansion due to the increase in temperature brought on by global warming in different regions of its range. According to the risk maps created for 2050 and 2070 using two alternative RCPs, there are various regions that will be under risk of this bacterium as a result of rising temperature. Future data science and GIS evaluation of the current results are necessary, especially on a local level.

Project description:Accurate maps of species ranges are essential to inform conservation, but time-consuming to produce and update. Given the pace of change of knowledge about species distributions and shifts in ranges under climate change and land use, a need exists for timely mapping approaches that enable batch processing employing widely available data. We develop a systematic approach of batch-processing range maps and derived Area of Habitat maps for terrestrial bird species with published ranges below 125,000 km2 in Central and South America. (Area of Habitat is the habitat available to a species within its range.) We combine existing range maps with the rapidly expanding crowd-sourced eBird data of presences and absences from frequently surveyed locations, plus readily accessible, high resolution satellite data on forest cover and elevation to map the Area of Habitat available to each species. Users can interrogate the maps produced to see details of the observations that contributed to the ranges. Previous estimates of Areas of Habitat were constrained within the published ranges and thus were, by definition, smaller-typically about 30%. This reflects how little habitat within suitable elevation ranges exists within the published ranges. Our results show that on average, Areas of Habitat are 12% larger than published ranges, reflecting the often-considerable extent that eBird records expand the known distributions of species. Interestingly, there are substantial differences between threatened and non-threatened species. Some 40% of Critically Endangered, 43% of Endangered, and 55% of Vulnerable species have Areas of Habitat larger than their published ranges, compared with 31% for Near Threatened and Least Concern species. The important finding for conservation is that threatened species are generally more widespread than previously estimated.

Project description:BackgroundMany commonly used genome browsers display sequence annotations and related attributes as horizontal data tracks that can be toggled on and off according to user preferences. Most genome browsers use only simple keyword searches and limit the display of detailed annotations to one chromosomal region of the genome at a time. We have employed concepts, methodologies, and tools that were developed for the display of geographic data to develop a Genome Spatial Information System (GenoSIS) for displaying genomes spatially, and interacting with genome annotations and related attribute data. In contrast to the paradigm of horizontally stacked data tracks used by most genome browsers, GenoSIS uses the concept of registered spatial layers composed of spatial objects for integrated display of diverse data. In addition to basic keyword searches, GenoSIS supports complex queries, including spatial queries, and dynamically generates genome maps. Our adaptation of the geographic information system (GIS) model in a genome context supports spatial representation of genome features at multiple scales with a versatile and expressive query capability beyond that supported by existing genome browsers.ResultsWe implemented an interactive genome sequence feature map for the mouse genome in GenoSIS, an application that uses ArcGIS, a commercially available GIS software system. The genome features and their attributes are represented as spatial objects and data layers that can be toggled on and off according to user preferences or displayed selectively in response to user queries. GenoSIS supports the generation of custom genome maps in response to complex queries about genome features based on both their attributes and locations. Our example application of GenoSIS to the mouse genome demonstrates the powerful visualization and query capability of mature GIS technology applied in a novel domain.ConclusionMapping tools developed specifically for geographic data can be exploited to display, explore and interact with genome data. The approach we describe here is organism independent and is equally useful for linear and circular chromosomes. One of the unique capabilities of GenoSIS compared to existing genome browsers is the capacity to generate genome feature maps dynamically in response to complex attribute and spatial queries.

Project description:ObjectiveTo study the prevalence of overweight and obesity and determine the associated risk factors among adults in Dubai.Design and settingA cross-sectional survey with a multistage, stratified random sampling design was conducted in the Emirate of Dubai in 2019.ParticipantsThe study included 2142 adults aged 18+ years in the Emirate of Dubai.ResultsThe overall prevalence of obesity, which was defined as body mass index (BMI) ≥30 kg/m2, was 17.8%. The highest obesity rates were reported among women (21.6%) and the United Arab Emirates (UAE)-nationals (39.6%). Moreover, 39.8% of the population was overweight (BMI ≥25-29.9 kg/m2). Multivariate logistic regression showed associations between obesity and age, sex, nationality, hypertension and occupation. Obesity increases with age, with the highest risk at age group 50-59 years (OR 4.30; 95% CI 1.57 to 11.78) compared with the reference group (18-24 years). Females had a higher risk of obesity than males (OR 1.62; 95% CI 1.10 to 2.38). Compared with those in the reference group (Western and others), UAE nationals, other Arabs and Asians were more likely to be obese ((OR 2.08; 95% CI 1.18 to 3.67), (OR 3.61; 95% CI 2.41 to 5.44) and (OR 1.98; 95% CI 1.12 to 3.50), respectively). Clerical and service workers (OR 4.50; 95% CI 2.54 to 8.00) and elementary and unskilled occupation categories (OR 2.57; 95% CI 1.56 to 4.25) had higher risks of obesity than the reference group (professionals), p<0.01). Hypertensive individuals had a higher risk of obesity than normotensive individuals (OR=3.96; p<0.01).ConclusionsObesity and overweight are highly prevalent among adults in Dubai and are remarkably associated with sociodemographic and behavioural risk factors. Comprehensive strategic initiatives are urgently needed to control obesity in the high-risk populations in the Emirate of Dubai.

Project description:The landscape structure influences the local wind field by lowering the wind speed and thus reducing the wind erosion risk. An important parameter is the height of each landscape element, as this determines the length of wind protection behind it. Further determining parameters are the wind speeds above a threshold value for initiating wind erosion and the corresponding wind directions. The presented method combines heights of landscape elements and the directional transport capacities of erosive wind speeds to derive a map of the spatial wind speed reduction by landscape structures. This map can be combined with the soil-derived erodibility map to get finally a wind erosion risk map which includes landscape effects.•The ArcGIS toolbox "WERA" allows a detailed analysis of the landscape structure on wind erosion processes,.•The method allows both the identification of risk areas and needs for additional plantings of LE.•The area-specific query determines the wind erosion risk for field blocks, districts or municipalities.

Project description:BackgroundOver the past century, the size and complexity of the air travel network has increased dramatically. Nowadays, there are 29.6 million scheduled flights per year and around 2.7 billion passengers are transported annually. The rapid expansion of the network increasingly connects regions of endemic vector-borne disease with the rest of the world, resulting in challenges to health systems worldwide in terms of vector-borne pathogen importation and disease vector invasion events. Here we describe the development of a user-friendly Web-based GIS tool: the Vector-Borne Disease Airline Importation Risk Tool (VBD-AIR), to help better define the roles of airports and airlines in the transmission and spread of vector-borne diseases.MethodsSpatial datasets on modeled global disease and vector distributions, as well as climatic and air network traffic data were assembled. These were combined to derive relative risk metrics via air travel for imported infections, imported vectors and onward transmission, and incorporated into a three-tier server architecture in a Model-View-Controller framework with distributed GIS components. A user-friendly web-portal was built that enables dynamic querying of the spatial databases to provide relevant information.ResultsThe VBD-AIR tool constructed enables the user to explore the interrelationships among modeled global distributions of vector-borne infectious diseases (malaria. dengue, yellow fever and chikungunya) and international air service routes to quantify seasonally changing risks of vector and vector-borne disease importation and spread by air travel, forming an evidence base to help plan mitigation strategies. The VBD-AIR tool is available at http://www.vbd-air.com.ConclusionsVBD-AIR supports a data flow that generates analytical results from disparate but complementary datasets into an organized cartographical presentation on a web map for the assessment of vector-borne disease movements on the air travel network. The framework built provides a flexible and robust informatics infrastructure by separating the modules of functionality through an ontological model for vector-borne disease. The VBD?AIR tool is designed as an evidence base for visualizing the risks of vector-borne disease by air travel for a wide range of users, including planners and decisions makers based in state and local government, and in particular, those at international and domestic airports tasked with planning for health risks and allocating limited resources.

Project description:After the occurrences of large-scale earthquakes, secondary damage (e.g., fire following earthquake) can result in tremendous losses of life, properties, and buildings. To reduce these disaster risks, fire following earthquake assessment methods composed of ignition and fire-burned rate estimation models have been utilized. However, previous methods required for large amounts of building and GIS information, and complex modeling and analysis processes, leading to significant time consumption. This paper proposed a static analysis-based rapid fire following earthquake assessment method using simple information and implemented it in Pohang City, South Korea. Based on previous studies, the best-fit model for the ignition rate estimation was selected, and a cluster-based fire-burned rate estimation model was developed using simple building information (e.g., construction year, building occupancy, story, and total floor area) from the public building database (e.g., building registration data). For the fire-burned rate estimation model, fire-resistant structure types were defined using simple building information, and this was utilized to generate clusters of buildings at a regional level by comparing fire-spread distances for each fire-resistant structure type with adjacent distances among the buildings. This proposed method was applied to Pohang City, South Korea, and validated as follows: (1) the selected ignition rate model predicted similar ignition numbers to the actual reported number (actual number of ignitions = 4 vs. predicted number of ignitions = 3), and (2) the fire-burned rate model estimated fire-burned areas with a marginal difference compared to the fire spread simulation (fire-burned area using the proposed model = 13,703.6 m2 vs. results of fire spread simulation = 16,800.0 m2, with an error of approximately 18%).

Project description:The COVID-19 pandemic has affected daily lives of people around the world. People have already started to live wearing masks, keeping a safe distance from others, and maintaining a high level of hygiene. This paper deals with an in-depth analysis of riskness associated with COVID-19 infections in Kolkata Municipal Corporation (KMC) at the subcity (ward) level. Attempts have been made to identify the areas with high or low risk of infections using GIS-based geostatistical approach. Cosine Similarity Index has been used to rank different wards of KMC according to the degree of riskness. Four indices were computed to address intervention objectives and to determine "Optimized Prevention Rank" of wards for future policy decisions. The highest risk areas were located in the eastern and western part of the city, to a great extent overlapped with wards containing larger share of population living in slums and/or below poverty level. On the other hand, highly infected areas lie in central Kolkata and in several wards at the eastern and northeastern periphery of the KMC. The "Optimized Prevention Rank" have indicated that the lack of social awareness along with lack of social distancing have contributed to the increasing number of containments of COVID-19 cases. The rankings of the wards would no doubt provide the policy makers a basis to control further spread of the disease. Since effective antiviral drugs are already in the market, the best application of our research would be in the ensuing vaccination drive against further COVID-19 infections.

Project description:High death tolls from recent earthquakes show that seismic risk remains high globally. While there has been much focus on seismic hazard, large uncertainties associated with exposure and vulnerability have led to more limited analyses of the potential impacts of future earthquakes. We argue that as both exposure and vulnerability are reducible factors of risk, assessing their importance and variability allows for prioritization of the most effective disaster risk-reduction (DRR) actions. We address this through earthquake ensemble modeling, using the example of Nepal. We model fatalities from 90 different scenario earthquakes and establish whether impacts are specific to certain scenario earthquakes or occur irrespective of the scenario. Our results show that for most districts in Nepal impacts are not specific to the particular characteristics of a single earthquake, and that total modeled impacts are skewed toward the minimum estimate. These results suggest that planning for the worst-case scenario in Nepal may place an unnecessarily large burden on the limited resources available for DRR. We also show that the most at-risk districts are predominantly in rural western Nepal, with ∼9.5 million Nepalis inhabiting districts with higher seismic risk than Kathmandu. Our proposed approach provides a holistic consideration of seismic risk for informing contingency planning and allows the relative importance of the reducible components of risk (exposure and vulnerability) to be estimated, highlighting factors that can be targeted most effectively. We propose this approach for informing contingency planning, especially in locations where information on the likelihood of future earthquakes is inadequate.
