Reconnecting groups of space debris to their parent body through proper elements.

ABSTRACT: Satellite collisions or fragmentations generate a huge number of space debris; over time, the fragments might get dispersed, making it difficult to associate them to the configuration at break-up. In this work, we present a procedure to back-trace the debris, reconnecting them to their original configuration. To this end, we compute the proper elements, namely dynamical quantities which stay nearly constant over time. While the osculating elements might spread and lose connection with the values at break-up, the proper elements, which have been already successfully used to identify asteroid families, retain the dynamical features of the original configuration. We show the efficacy of the procedure, based on a hierarchical implementation of perturbation theory, by analyzing the following four different case studies associated to satellites that underwent a catastrophic event: Ariane 44lp, Atlas V Centaur, CZ-3, Titan IIIc Transtage. The link between (initial and final) osculating and proper elements is evaluated through tools of statistical data analysis. The results show that proper elements allow one to reconnect the fragments to their parent body.

Project description:IntroductionIntimate partner violence detrimentally affects the social and emotional well-being of children and mothers. These two populations are impacted both individually and within the context of their relationship with one another. Child mental health, maternal mental health and the mother-child relationship may be impaired as a consequence. Early intervention to prevent or arrest impaired mother-child attachment and child development is needed. Dyadic or relational mental health interventions that include mothers with their children, such as child-parent psychotherapy, are effective in improving the mental health of both children and mothers and also strengthening their relationship. While child-parent psychotherapy has been trialled overseas in several populations, Australian research on relational interventions for children and women recovering from violence is limited. This study aims to assess the acceptability and feasibility of implementing child-parent psychotherapy in Australian families.Methods and analysisUsing a mixed methods, prepost design this feasibility study will examine the acceptability of the intervention to women with preschool aged children (3-5 years, n=15 dyads) and providers, and identify process issues including recruitment, retention and barriers to implementation and sustainability. In addition, intervention efficacy will be assessed using maternal and child health outcomes and functioning, and mother-child attachment measures. Young children's mental health needs are underserviced in Australia. More research is needed to fully understand parenting in the context of intimate partner violence and what works to help women and children recover. If the intervention is found to be feasible, findings will inform future trials and expansion of child-parent psychotherapy in Australia.Ethics and disseminationEthics approval obtained from clinical sites and the La Trobe University Human Research Ethics Committee (ID: HEC17-108). Results will be disseminated through conference proceedings and academic publications.

Project description:With the sustained rise in satellite deployment in Low Earth Orbits, the collision risk from untracked space debris is also increasing. Often small-sized space debris (below 10 cm) are hard to track using the existing state-of-the-art methods. However, knowing such space debris' trajectory is crucial to avoid future collisions. We present a Physics Informed Neural Network (PINN)-based approach for estimation of the trajectory of space debris after a collision event between active satellite and space debris. In this work, we have simulated 8565 inelastic collision events between active satellites and space debris. To obtain the states of the active satellite, we use the TLE data of 1647 Starlink and 66 LEMUR satellites obtained from space-track.org. The velocity of space debris is initialized using our proposed velocity sampling method, and the coefficient of restitution is sampled from our proposed Gaussian mixture-based probability density function. Using the velocities of the colliding objects before the collision, we calculate the post-collision velocities and record the observations. The state (position and velocity), coefficient of restitution, and mass estimation of un-tracked space debris after an inelastic collision event along with the tracked active satellite can be posed as an optimization problem by observing the deviation of the active satellite from the trajectory. We have applied the classical optimization method, the Lagrange multiplier approach, for solving the above optimization problem and observed that its state estimation is not satisfactory as the system is under-determined. Subsequently, we have designed Deep Neural network-based methods and Physics Informed Neural Network (PINN) based methods for solving the above optimization problem. We have compared the performance of the models using root mean square error (RMSE) and interquartile range of the predictions. It has been observed that the PINN-based methods provide a better estimation performance for position, velocity, mass and coefficient of restitution of the space debris compared to other methods.
