Graphitic Carbon Nitride as a Platform for the Synthesis of Silver Nanoclusters.

ABSTRACT: Graphitic carbon nitride (CN) synthetized by the thermal polycondensation of melamine at 550 °C for 4 h was further exfoliated by heating at 500 °C for 3 h. Silver cations were adsorbed on the exfoliated graphitic carbon nitride (CNE) and then reduced by sodium borohydride forming silver nanoclusters (NCs) with a size of less than 1 nm. The NCs were located on the CNE surface and did not change the CNE properties except for its pore size distribution and thereby specific surface area (SSA). The Ag NCs were able to collect the photoinduced electrons of CNE and thus reduce their recombination with the holes. It was also documented by the increase in the CNE photocatalytic activity in terms of the degradation of antibiotic Ofloxacin. This study demonstrates the ability of CNE to serve as a platform for a simple and fast synthesis of Ag NCs without any stabilizing compounds.

Ultrafast Charge Injection in Silver-Modified Graphitic Carbon Nitride.

Project description:Graphitic carbon nitride (gCN) is a promising organic platform for driving light-activated charge-transfer reactions in a number of valuable photocatalytic cycles. A primary limitation of gCN as a photocatalyst is its short excited-state lifetime, which is mediated by a high density of trap and defect sites that result in rapid excited-state decay and low photocatalytic efficiency. To enhance the catalytic activity, gCN is often functionalized with a metal co-catalyst; however, the mechanism by which metal co-catalysts enhance the reactivity has not been clearly established. In this work, the excited-state dynamics of gCN and silver-modified gCN are compared using ultrafast transient absorption and time-resolved photoluminescence spectroscopies. In silver-modified gCN, an ultrafast spectral shift in the silver plasmon resonance provides direct spectral evidence of electron transfer from gCN to the silver nanoparticles. The electron-transfer rate is competitive with other non-radiative relaxation pathways, with electron-transfer yields approaching 50%, thus providing an effective strategy for mitigating losses associated with defects and trap sites.

Synthesis of Silver Nanoparticles-Modified Graphitic Carbon Nitride Nanosheets for Highly Efficient Photocatalytic Hydrogen Peroxide Evolution

Project description:As a promising metal-free photocatalyst, graphitic carbon nitride (g-C3N4) is still limited by insufficient visible light absorption and rapid recombination of photogenerated carriers, resulting in low photocatalytic activity. Here, we adjusted the microstructure of the pristine bulk-g-C3N4 (PCN) and further loaded silver (Ag) nanoparticles. Abundant Ag nanoparticles were grown on the thin-layer g-C3N4 nanosheets (CNNS), and the Ag nanoparticles decorated g-C3N4 nanosheets (Ag@CNNS) were successfully synthesized. The thin-layer nanosheet-like structure was not only beneficial for the loading of Ag nanoparticles but also for the adsorption and activation of reactants via exposing more active sites. Moreover, the surface plasmon resonance (SPR) effect induced by Ag nanoparticles enhanced the absorption of visible light by narrowing the band gap of the substrate. Meanwhile, the composite band structure effectively promoted the separation and transfer of carriers. Benefiting from these merits, the Ag@CNNS reached a superior hydrogen peroxide (H2O2) yield of 120.53 μmol/g/h under visible light irradiation in pure water (about 8.0 times higher than that of PCN), significantly surpassing most previous reports. The design method of manipulating the microstructure of the catalyst combined with the modification of metal nanoparticles provides a new idea for the rational development and application of efficient photocatalysts.

The role of guanidine hydrochloride in graphitic carbon nitride synthesis.

Project description:Graphitic carbon nitride (CN) was synthesized from guanidine hydrochloride (G), melamine (M) and dicyandiamide (DCDA). The CN materials synthetized from the pure precursors and their mixtures were characterized by common methods, including thermal analysis, and their photocatalytic activities were tested by the degradation of selected organic pollutants, such as amoxicillin, phenol, Rhodamine B (RhB). Remarkable changes in their texture properties in terms of particle sizes, specific surface areas (SSA) and consequently their photocatalytic activity were explained by the role of guanidine hydrochloride in their synthesis. The SSA increased due to the release of NH3 and HCl and its complex reactions with melamine and DCDA forming structure imperfections and disruptions. The photocatalytic activity of the CN materials was found to be dependent on their SSA.

Biomimetic Synthesis of PANI/Graphitic Oxidized Carbon Nitride for Supercapacitor Applications.

Project description:Polyaniline (PANI) composites have gained momentum as supercapacitive materials due to their high energy density and power density. However, some drawbacks in their performance remain, such as the low stability after hundreds of charge-discharge cycles and limitations in the synthesis scalability. Herein, we report for the first time PANI-Graphitic oxidized carbon nitride composites as potential supercapacitor material. The biomimetic polymerization of aniline assisted by hematin, supported by phosphorous and oxygen-modified carbon nitrides (g-POCN and g-OCN, respectively), achieved up to 89% yield. The obtained PAI/g-POCN and PANI/g-OCN show enhanced electrochemical properties, such as conductivity of up to 0.0375 S/cm, specific capacitances (Cs) of up to 294 F/g (at high current densities, 5 A/g) and a stable operation after 500 charge-discharge cycles (at 3 A/g). In contrast, the biomimetic synthesis of Free PANI, assisted by stabilized hematin in cosolvents, exhibited lower performance properties (65%). Due to their structural differences, the electrochemical properties of Free PANI (conductivity of 0.0045 S/cm and Cs of up to 82 F/g at 5 A/g) were lower than those of nanostructured PANI/g-POCN and g-OCN supports, which provide stability and improve the properties of biomimetically synthesized PANI. This work reveals the biomimetic synthesis of PANI, assisted by hematin supported by modified carbon nitrides, as a promising strategy to produce nanostructured supercapacitors with high performance.

Biogenic Synthesis of Graphitic Carbon Nitride for Photocatalytic Degradation of Organic Dyes.

Project description:A simple approach of template growth of graphitic-carbon nitride (g-CN), a polymeric unit consisting of C, N, O, and H elements derived from extracts of green plant Aloe vera, which are rich in several chemical constituents, has been successfully experimented in this work. Comparing several other methods used for synthesizing g-CN involving a large amount of toxic components, here, we propose the simplest route economically and environmentally highly viable for near future. Green plants are highly rich in natural carbon and nitrogen compounds, such as acemannan, glucose, aloin, protein, etc. Way before g-CN research, many carbon-based materials have been synthesized for multifunctional properties, but g-CN has much benefit over them due to the presence of elements such as C, N, O, and H, thus making it electron-rich. Multifunctional properties of graphitic-carbon nitride interface bonding as a supercapacitor or as a metal-free catalyst thus help degrade dyes. Violet-blue broad band emission was even noticed when excited at 240 nm via C-C bonding (π-π* transition) in the absorption band with an extinction coefficient of ∼104 M-1 cm-1. With our research, we want to pave new ways of synthesizing such materials present in our nature in a biological form, which can protect our environment, thus causing less harm to mankind.

Graphitic Carbon Nitride for Photocatalytic Air Treatment.

Project description:Graphitic carbon nitride (g-C3N4) is a conjugated polymer, which recently drew a lot of attention as a metal-free and UV and visible light responsive photocatalyst in the field of solar energy conversion and environmental remediation. This is due to its appealing electronic band structure, high physicochemical stability and earth-abundant nature. In the present work, bulk g-C3N4 was synthesized by thermal decomposition of melamine. This material was further exfoliated by thermal treatment. S-doped samples were prepared from thiourea or further treatment of exfoliated g-C3N4 by mesylchloride. Synthesized materials were applied for photocatalytic removal of air pollutants (acetaldehyde and NOx) according to the ISO 22197 and ISO 22197-1 methodology. The efficiency of acetaldehyde removal under UV irradiation was negligible for all g-C3N4 samples. This can be explained by the fact that g-C3N4 under irradiation does not directly form hydroxyl radicals, which are the primary oxidation species in acetaldehyde oxidation. It was proved by electron paramagnetic resonance (EPR) spectroscopy that the dominant species formed on the irradiated surface of g-C3N4 was the superoxide radical. Its production was responsible for a very high NOx removal efficiency not only under UV irradiation (which was comparable with that of TiO2), but also under visible irradiation.

Post-Synthetic Derivatization of Graphitic Carbon Nitride with Methanesulfonyl Chloride: Synthesis, Characterization and Photocatalysis.

Project description:Bulk graphitic carbon nitride (CN) was synthetized by heating of melamine at 550 °C, and the exfoliated CN (ExCN) was prepared by heating of CN at 500 °C. Sulfur-doped CN was synthesized by heating of thiourea (S-CN) and by a novel procedure based on the post-synthetic derivatization of CN with methanesulfonyl (CH3SO2-) chloride (Mes-CN and Mes-ExCN). The obtained nanomaterials were investigated by common characterization methods and their photocatalytic activity was tested by means of the decomposition of acetic orange 7 (AO7) under ultraviolet A (UVA) irradiation. The content of sulfur in the modified CN decreased in the sequence of Mes-ExCN > Mes-CN > S-CN. The absorption of light decreased in the opposite manner, but no influence on the band gap energies was observed. The methanesulfonyl (mesyl) groups connected to primary and secondary amine groups were confirmed by high resolution mass spectrometry (HRMS). The photocatalytic activity decreased in the sequence of Mes-ExCN > ExCN > CN ≈ Mes-CN > S-CN. The highest activity of Mes-ExCN and ExCN was explained by the highest amounts of adsorbed Acetic Orange 7 (AO7). In addition, in the case of Mes-ExCN, chloride ions incorporated in the CN lattice enhanced the photocatalytic activity as well.

Modification of Graphitic Carbon Nitride with Hydrogen Peroxide.

Project description:Graphitic carbon nitride (GCN) was synthetized by heating melamine and then it was thermally exfoliated for 1-3 h in air. Both bulk and exfoliated GCN nanomaterials were treated in the 10-30% aqueous solutions of H2O2 for us to study their modification. The light absorption properties were observed by the reddish color and the red-shifts of their UV-Vis spectra. The content of oxygen increased and hydrogen peroxide was supposed to partially oxidize C-OH groups to C=O ones and to form C-O-C groups instead of edge C-NH-C ones. The GCN structure changes were not observed. However, a surface modification of the GCN materials was recognized by their changed photocatalytic activities tested by means of Acid Orange 7 (AO7) and Rhodamines B (RhB), zeta-potentials, and neutralization titration curves.

Exploring the evolution patterns of melem from thermal synthesis of melamine to graphitic carbon nitride.

Project description:In the exploration of synthesizing graphitic carbon nitride (g-C3N4), the existence of secondary anime bridging units shows the incompleteness of related theories. Thus, taking the thermal synthesis of melamine as an example, this work finds a possible reaction path with Density Functional Theory (DFT) for forming melem during the thermal synthesis of g-C3N4. Combined with transition state theory (TST), it indicates that the formation of melem results from the condensation of melamine and isomerization of melam. Meanwhile, the weak signal near 2135 cm-1 in the Fourier Transform Infrared Spectra (FTIR) corresponds to the vibration of carbodi-imines (-N[double bond, length as m-dash]C[double bond, length as m-dash]N-), which further proves the proposed reaction path. Thus, this work can explain the formation of g-C3N4 and its monomer, which may contribute to the successful formation of ideal g-C3N4 in the future.
