Thermophysical Properties of Hybrid Nanofluids and the Proposed Models: An Updated Comprehensive Study.

ABSTRACT: Thermal performance of energy conversion systems is one of the most important goals to improve the system's efficiency. Such thermal performance is strongly dependent on the thermophysical features of the applied fluids used in energy conversion systems. Thermal conductivity, specific heat in addition to dynamic viscosity are the properties that dramatically affect heat transfer characteristics. These features of hybrid nanofluids, as promising heat transfer fluids, are influenced by different constituents, including volume fraction, size of solid parts and temperature. In this article, the mentioned features of the nanofluids with hybrid nanostructures and the proposed models for these properties are reviewed. It is concluded that the increase in the volume fraction of solids causes improvement in thermal conductivity and dynamic viscosity, while the trend of variations in the specific heat depends on the base fluid. In addition, the increase in temperature increases the thermal conductivity while it decreases the dynamic viscosity. Moreover, as stated by the reviewed works, different approaches have applicability for modeling these properties with high accuracy, while intelligent algorithms, including artificial neural networks, are able to reach a higher precision compared with the correlations. In addition to the used method, some other factors, such as the model architecture, influence the reliability and exactness of the proposed models.

Project description:Hybrid nanofluids are considered as an alternative for conventional heat transfer fluids and mono nanofluids due to its remarkable enhancement in thermo-physical properties. However, there are some limitations in achieving the better thermo-physical properties due to the stability of nanoparticles in different base fluids at higher concentration. This work aims at synthesizing, thermo-physical characterization and thermal performance estimation of stable Cu-MXene based hybrid nanofluids using various base fluids at very low volume concentration of Cu and MXene nanostructures. Two step method is employed to prepare Cu-MXene hybrid nanofluids by dispersing the low volume concentration of as prepared Cu and MXene nanostructures (ranging from 0.01-0.05 vol%) containing SDS surfactant in various base fluids such as water, methanol, castor oil and silicon oil. Synthesized mono and hybrid nanofluids shows excellent stability against aggregation up to 7 days as evidenced from higher zeta potential values. Wettability studies conducted using contact angle measurement suggests that the castor oil, methanol and silicon oil based hybrid nanofluids exhibits hydrophilic behavior (showing contact angle less than 90°). Hybrid nanofluids display excellent enhancement in thermal conductivity at very low concentration of nanostructures (more than 70% for methanol based Cu-MXene hybrid nanofluid). Viscosity of the silicone oil based hybrid nanofluids show a remarkable enhancement followed by water, methanol and castor oil based hybrid nanofluids. Thermal conductivity and viscosity of hybrid nanofluids are effectively validated with existing theoretical models. Moreover, specific heat and pumping power of the hybrid nanofluids with respect to volume concentration of nanostructures are determined using the existing theoretical equations. Thermal performance of hybrid nanofluids was successfully estimated using Figure of Merit (FOM) analysis and suggested the better heat transfer fluid for improving the heat transfer performance under laminar and turbulent flow conditions for efficient cooling applications.

Project description:In this work, a simple and facile approach was employed for the preparation of the ternary hybrids comprising of titanium dioxide, zinc oxide and graphitic nitride (designated as TZG-TH) with varying compositions of the components. In the context of complex and multi-stages involved for preparation of many of the THs in the literature, the present work uses the much simpler mythology for the preparation of TH. Nanofluids (NF) were formulated in ethylene glycol: water base fluid using TZG TH as the solid particles. Scanning electron microscope of TZG TH informs that the particles are agglomerated. High resolution transmission electron microscopy image of TZG-TH reveals the presence narrowly distributed spherical particles (having the sizes in the range 40 nm-100 nm) in sheet like structure The core level X-ray photoelectron spectrum of carbon and nitrogen elements reveal the existence of sp2 -bonded C in the C[bond, double bond]N and pyridinic and graphitic nitrogen in TZG-TH. X-ray diffraction patterns of TZG TH show the existence of anatase and hexagonal phase wurtzite crystalline structure in TH. The thermo-physical properties were determined for of the THNFs in order to elucidate the influence of compositions of the component and concentration ofof TZG-TH on the thermophysical properties. The TZG TH containing larger proportions of ZnO showed the maximum of 9.11 % and 12.1 % higher increase in viscosity than the binary and base fluid, respectively. The density of TZG THs varies from 1.079 to 1.095 cp, which is closer to the base fluid. The influence of TZG TH composition on refractive index and ultrasonic velocity indicates the existence of molecular level interactions between the nanoparticles in the TH and base fluid. The ∼210 % thermal conductivity enhancement was witnessed for the TZG TH, which is significantly higher than that of ZnO mono NF (26.9%) and TiO2 mono NF (33.0%). The influence of composition and concentration of TZG- TH on molecular interaction parameters like adiabatic compressibility, intermolecular free length, free volume, internal pressure and specific acoustic impedance are reported. The TZG TH based NF showed adequate dispersion stability as inferred from dynamic light scattering and UV-visible spectroscopy results. The results on TZG TH included THNF are new to the literature and would be helpful in exploring multifunctional properties with heat transfer capabilities for applications.
