Data of characterization of sodium pectate complexes with iron and manganese.

ABSTRACT: Data for iron and manganese-containing sodium pectate complexes are reported. Such complexes are potentially capable of exhibiting catalytic properties to the electroreduction of small molecules. Also, the complexes are water-soluble due to their ligands. The combination of these factors makes them promising for homogeneous electrocatalysis. However, in many respects, these complexes remain poorly understood. The Fourier-transform infrared spectroscopy data for the sodium pectate complexes with manganese and iron in the range of 500-4000 cm^-1 were obtained. The electron spin resonance spectra of the complexes make it possible to characterize oxidation states of the metal centers in the complexes. The cyclic voltammetry data for the complexes both in an aqueous solution saturated with argon and saturated with carbon dioxide were received. For both complexes after deposition of the complexes on graphite managed to get micrographs by the atomic force microscopy method.

Complexes of Sodium Pectate with Nickel for Hydrogen Oxidation and Oxygen Reduction in Proton-Exchange Membrane Fuel Cells.

Project description:A number of nickel complexes of sodium pectate with varied Ni2+ content have been synthesized and characterized. The presence of the proton conductivity, the possibility of the formation of a dense spatial network of transition metals in these coordination biopolymers, and the immobilization of transition ions in the catalytic sites of this class of compounds make them promising for proton-exchange membrane fuel cells. It has been established that the catalytic system composed of a coordination biopolymer with 20% substitution of sodium ions for divalent nickel ions, Ni (20%)-NaPG, is the leading catalyst in the series of 5, 15, 20, 25, 35% substituted pectates. Among the possible reasons for the improvement in performance the larger specific surface area of this sample compared to the other studied materials and the narrowest distribution of the vertical size of metal arrays were registered. The highest activity during CV and proximity to four-electron transfer during the catalytic cycle have also been observed for this compound.

Mononuclear Manganese(III) Superoxo Complexes: Synthesis, Characterization, and Reactivity.

Project description:Metal-superoxo species are typically proposed as key intermediates in the catalytic cycle of dioxygen activation by metalloenzymes involving different transition metal cofactors. In this regard, while a series of Fe-, Co-, and Ni-superoxo complexes have been reported to date, well-defined Mn-superoxo complexes remain rather rare. Herein, we report two mononuclear MnIII-superoxo species, Mn(BDPP)(O2•-) (2, H2BDPP = 2,6-bis((2-(S)-diphenylhydroxylmethyl-1-pyrrolidinyl)methyl)pyridine) and Mn(BDPBrP)(O2•-) (2', H2BDPBrP = 2,6-bis((2-(S)-di(4-bromo)phenylhydroxyl-methyl-1-pyrrolidinyl)methyl)pyridine), synthesized by bubbling O2 into solutions of their MnII precursors, Mn(BDPP) (1) and Mn(BDPBrP) (1'), at -80 °C. A combined spectroscopic (resonance Raman and electron paramagnetic resonance (EPR) spectroscopy) and computational study evidence that both complexes contain a high-spin MnIII center (SMn = 2) antiferromagnetically coupled to a superoxo radical ligand (SOO• = 1/2), yielding an overall S = 3/2 ground state. Complexes 2 and 2' were shown to be capable of abstracting a H atom from 2,2,6,6-tetramethyl-1-hydroxypiperidine (TEMPO-H) to form MnIII-hydroperoxo species, Mn(BDPP)(OOH) (5) and Mn(BDPBrP)(OOH) (5'). Complexes 5 and 5' can be independently prepared by the reactions of the isolated MnIII-aqua complexes, [Mn(BDPP)(H2O)]OTf (6) and [Mn(BDPBrP)(H2O)]OTf (6'), with H2O2 in the presence of NEt3. The parallel-mode EPR measurements established a high-spin S = 2 ground state for 5 and 5'.

Trithiocyanurate complexes of iron, manganese and nickel and their anticholinesterase activity.

Project description:The complexes of Fe(II), Mn(II) and Ni(II) with a combination of a Schiff base, nitrogen-donor ligand or macrocyclic ligand and trithiocyanuric acid (ttcH3) were prepared and characterized by elemental analysis and spectroscopies. Crystal and molecular structures of the iron complex of composition [Fe(L1)](ttcH2)(ClO4)·EtOH·H2O (1), where L1 is Schiff base derived from tris(2-aminoethyl)amine and 2-pyridinecarboxaldehyde, were solved. It was found that the Schiff base is coordinated to the central iron atom by six nitrogens forming deformed octahedral arrangement, whereas trithiocyanurate(1-) anion, perchlorate and solvent molecules are not coordinated. The X-ray structure of the Schiff base sodium salt is also presented and compared with the iron complex. The anticholinesterase activity of the complexes was also studied.

Synthesis, characterization, and reactivities of manganese(V)-oxo porphyrin complexes.

Project description:The reactions of manganese(III) porphyrin complexes with terminal oxidants, such as m-chloroperbenzoic acid, iodosylarenes, and H(2)O(2), produced high-valent manganese(V)-oxo porphyrins in the presence of base in organic solvents at room temperature. The manganese(V)-oxo porphyrins have been characterized with various spectroscopic techniques, including UV-vis, EPR, 1H and 19F NMR, resonance Raman, and X-ray absorption spectroscopy. The combined spectroscopic results indicate that the manganese(V)-oxo porphyrins are diamagnetic low-spin (S = 0) species with a longer, weaker Mn-O bond than in previously reported Mn(V)-oxo complexes of non-porphyrin ligands. This is indicative of double-bond character between the manganese(V) ion and the oxygen atom and may be attributed to the presence of a trans axial ligand. The [(Porp)Mn(V)=O](+) species are stable in the presence of base at room temperature. The stability of the intermediates is dependent on base concentration. In the absence of base, (Porp)Mn(IV)=O is generated instead of the [(Porp)Mn(V)=O](+) species. The stability of the [(Porp)Mn(V)=O](+) species also depends on the electronic nature of the porphyrin ligands: [(Porp)Mn(V)=O](+) complexes bearing electron-deficient porphyrin ligands are more stable than those bearing electron-rich porphyrins. Reactivity studies of manganese(V)-oxo porphyrins revealed that the intermediates are capable of oxygenating PPh(3) and thioanisoles, but not olefins and alkanes at room temperature. These results indicate that the oxidizing power of [(Porp)Mn(V)=O](+) is low in the presence of base. However, when the [(Porp)Mn(V)=O](+) complexes were associated with iodosylbenzene in the presence of olefins and alkanes, high yields of oxygenated products were obtained in the catalytic olefin epoxidation and alkane hydroxylation reactions. Mechanistic aspects, such as oxygen exchange between [(Porp)Mn(V)=16O](+) and H(2)(18)O, are also discussed.

Asymmetric Epoxidation of Olefins with Sodium Percarbonate Catalyzed by Bis-amino-bis-pyridine Manganese Complexes.

Project description:Asymmetric epoxidation of a series of olefinic substrates with sodium percarbonate oxidant in the presence of homogeneous catalysts based on Mn complexes with bis-amino-bis-pyridine ligands is reported. Sodium percarbonate is a readily available and environmentally benign oxidant that is studied in these reactions for the first time. The epoxidation proceeded with good to high yields (up to 100%) and high enantioselectivities (up to 99% ee) using as low as 0.2 mol. % catalyst loadings. The epoxidation protocol is suitable for various types of substrates, including unfunctionalized alkenes, α,β-unsaturated ketones, esters (cis- and trans-), and amides (cis- and trans-). The reaction mechanism is discussed.

Synthesis and characterization of iron(II) quinaldate complexes.

Project description:Treatment of iron(II) chloride or iron(II) bromide with 2 equiv of sodium quinaldate (qn = quinaldate or C(10)H(6)NO(2)(-)) yields the coordinatively unsaturated mononuclear iron(II) quinaldate complexes Na[Fe(II)(qn)(2)Cl].DMF and Na[Fe(II)(qn)(2)Br].DMF (DMF = N,N-dimethylformamide), respectively. When a similar synthesis is carried out using iron(II) triflate, a solvent-derived linear triiron(II) complex, [Fe(II)(3)(qn)(6)(DMF)(2)], with two five-coordinate iron(II) centers and a single six-coordinate iron(II) center is obtained. Each of these species has been characterized using X-ray diffraction. The vibrational features of these complexes are consistent with the observed solid-state structures. Each of these compounds exhibits an iron(II)-to-quinaldate (pi*) charge-transfer band between 520 and 550 nm. These metal-to-ligand charge-transfer bands are sensitive to substitution of the quinaldates as well as alteration of the first coordination sphere ligands. However, the (1)H NMR spectra of these paramagnetic high-spin iron(II) complexes are not consistent with retention of the solid-state structures in a DMF solution. The chemical shifts, longitudinal relaxation times (T(1)), relative integrations, and substitution of the quinaldate ligands provide a means to fully assign the (1)H NMR spectra of the paramagnetic materials. These spectra are consistent with coordination equilibria between five- and six-coordinate species in a DMF solution. Electrochemical studies are reported to place these oxygen-sensitive compounds in a broader context with other iron(II) compounds. Iron complexes of bidentate quinoline-2-carboxylate-derived ligands are germane to metabolic pathways, environmental remediation, and catalytic applications.

Synthesis and Characterization of Bidentate Isonitrile Iron Complexes.

Project description:The divalent iron complexes trans-[FeBr2(BINC)2], [Cp*FeCl(BINC)] (Cp* = Me5C5), and [FeBr2(CNAr3NC)2] with the chelating bis(isonitrile) ligands BINC (bis(2-isocyanophenyl)phenylphosphonate) and CNAr3NC (2,2″-diisocyano-3,5,3″,5"tetramethyl-1,1':3',1″-terphenyl) have been prepared and characterized. Their subsequent reduction yields the di- and trinuclear compounds [Fe3(BINC)6], [Cp*Fe(BINC)]2, [Fe(CNAr3NC)2]2, and [K(Et2O)]2[Fe(CNAr3NC)2]2. The molecular structures of all new species were determined by X-ray crystallography and compared to those of related iron carbonyl complexes, demonstrating that the bidentate isonitrile ligands are capable surrogates for two CO ligands with only minimal distortion of the tetrahedral or octahedral geometry of the parent complexes. The complexes were further characterized by NMR and IR spectroscopy, and the electrochemical properties of selected compounds were analyzed by UV-vis-NIR spectroelectrochemistry.

Synthesis and Characterization of Manganese Dithiocarbamate Complexes: New Evidence of Dioxygen Activation.

Project description:(1) Background: Metal dithiocarbamate compounds have long been the subject of research due to their ease of formation, excellent properties and potential applications. However, manganese complexes with dithiocarbamates, to our knowledge, have never been used for medical imaging applications. With the aim of developing a new class of mononuclear manganese(II)-based agents for molecular imaging applications, we performed a specific investigation into the synthesis of mononuclear bis-substituted Mn(II) complexes with dithiocarbamate ligands. (2) Methods: Synthesis in either open or inert atmosphere at different Mn(II) to diethyldithiocarbamate molar ratios were performed and the products characterized by IR, EA, ESI-MS and XRD analysis. (3) Results: We found that only under oxygen-free atmospheric conditions the Mn(II) complex MnL2, where L = diethyldithiocarbamate ligand, is obtained, which was further observed to react with dioxygen in the solid state to form the intermediate superoxo Mn(III) complex [MnL2(η2-O2)]. The existence of the superoxo complex was revealed by mass spectroscopy, and this species was interpreted as an intermediate step in the reaction that led the bis-substituted Mn(II) complex, MnL2, to transform into the tris-substituted Mn(III) complex, MnL3. A similar result was found with the ligand L' (= bis(N-ethoxyethyl)dithiocarbamate). (4) Conclusions: We found that in open atmosphere and in aqueous solution, only manganese(III) diethyldithiocarbamate complexes can be prepared. We report here a new example of a small-molecule Mn(II) complex that efficiently activates dioxygen in the solid state through the formation of an intermediate superoxide adduct.

Mechanistic Insight into the Nitric Oxide Dioxygenation Reaction of Nonheme Iron(III)-Superoxo and Manganese(IV)-Peroxo Complexes.

Project description:Reactions of nonheme Fe(III) -superoxo and Mn(IV) -peroxo complexes bearing a common tetraamido macrocyclic ligand (TAML), namely [(TAML)Fe(III) (O2 )](2-) and [(TAML)Mn(IV) (O2 )](2-) , with nitric oxide (NO) afford the Fe(III) -NO3 complex [(TAML)Fe(III) (NO3 )](2-) and the Mn(V) -oxo complex [(TAML)Mn(V) (O)](-) plus NO2 (-) , respectively. Mechanistic studies, including density functional theory (DFT) calculations, reveal that M(III) -peroxynitrite (M=Fe and Mn) species, generated in the reactions of [(TAML)Fe(III) (O2 )](2-) and [(TAML)Mn(IV) (O2 )](2-) with NO, are converted into M(IV) (O) and (.) NO2 species through O-O bond homolysis of the peroxynitrite ligand. Then, a rebound of Fe(IV) (O) with (.) NO2 affords [(TAML)Fe(III) (NO3 )](2-) , whereas electron transfer from Mn(IV) (O) to (.) NO2 yields [(TAML)Mn(V) (O)](-) plus NO2 (-) .
