Dataset of numerical simulations for aeroelastic control of an aero engine compressor cascade using plasma actuators.

ABSTRACT: The dataset presented here regard the analysis reported in the research article entitled "Comparison of different plasma actuation strategies for aeroelastic control on a linear compressor cascade" De Giorgi et al. (2021) [1]. These data are related to the Computational Fluid Dynamics (CFD) assessment of different plasma actuation strategies for the aeroelastic control of an aero engine compressor cascade in subsonic flow conditions. The authors evaluated the accuracy of numerical computations using experimental results. Here, both experimental and raw data of the CFD simulations are presented.

Analysis of Cyclist's Drag on the Aero Position Using Numerical Simulations and Analytical Procedures: A Case Study.

Project description:BACKGROUND:Resistance acting on a cyclist is a major concern among the cycling fraternity. Most of the testing methods require previous training or expensive equipment and time-consuming set-ups. By contrast, analytical procedures are more affordable and numerical simulations are perfect for manipulating and controlling inputs. The aim of this case study was to compare the drag of a cyclist in the aero position as measured using numerical simulation and analytical procedures. METHODS:An elite male cyclist (65 kg in mass and 1.72 m in height) volunteered to take part in this research. The cyclist was wearing his competition gear, helmet and bicycle. A three-dimensional model of the bicycle and cyclist in the aero position was obtained to run the numerical simulations. Computational fluid dynamics (CFD) and a set of analytical procedures were carried out to assess drag, frontal area and drag coefficient, between 1 m/s and 22 m/s, with increments of 1 m/s. The t-test paired samples and linear regression were selected to compare, correlate and assess the methods agreement. RESULTS:No significant differences (t = 2.826; p = 0.275) between CFD and analytical procedures were found. The linear regression showed a very high adjustment for drag (R2 = 0.995; p < 0.001). However, the drag values obtained by the analytical procedures seemed to be overestimated, even though without effect (d = 0.11). CONCLUSIONS:These findings suggest that drag might be assessed using both a set of analytical procedures and CFD.

The Drag Crisis Phenomenon on an Elite Road Cyclist-A Preliminary Numerical Simulations Analysis in the Aero Position at Different Speeds.

Project description:The drag crisis phenomenon is the drop of drag coefficient (Cd) with increasing Reynolds number (Re) or speed. The aim of this study was to assess the hypothetical drag crisis phenomenon in a sports setting, assessing it in a bicycle-cyclist system. A male elite-level cyclist was recruited for this research and his competition bicycle, helmet, suit, and shoes were used. A three-dimensional (3D) geometry was obtained with a 3D scan with the subject in a static aero position. A domain with 7 m of length, 2.5 m of width and 2.5 m of height was created around the cyclist. The domain was meshed with 42 million elements. Numerical simulations by computer fluid dynamics (CFD) fluent numerical code were conducted at speeds between 1 m/s and 22 m/s, with increments of 1 m/s. The drag coefficient ranged between 0.60 and 0.95 across different speeds and Re. The highest value was observed at 2 m/s (Cd = 0.95) and Re of 3.21 × 105, whereas the lower Cd was noted at 9 m/s (Cd = 0.60) and 9.63 × 105. A drag crisis was noted between 3 m/s and 9 m/s. Pressure Cd ranged from 0.35 to 0.52 and the lowest value was observed at 3 m/s and the highest at 2 m/s. The viscous drag coefficient ranged between 0.15 and 0.43 and presented a trend decreasing from 4 m/s to 22 m/s. Coaches, cyclists, researchers, and support staff must consider that Cd varies with speed and Re, and the bicycle-cyclist dimensions, shape, or form may affect drag and performance estimations. As a conclusion, this preliminary work noted a drag crisis between 3 m/s and 9 m/s in a cyclist in the aero position.

Multi-packet transmission aero-engine DCS neural network sliding mode control based on multi-kernel LS-SVM packet dropout online compensation.

Project description:In view of the strong nonlinear characteristics of the multi-packet transmission Aero-engine DCS with induced delay and random packet dropout, a neural network PID approach law sliding-mode controller using sliding window strategy and multi-kernel LS-SVM packet dropout online compensation is proposed. Firstly, the time-delay term in the system model is transformed equivalently, to establish the discrete system model of multi-packet transmission without time-delay; furthermore, the construction of multi-kernel function is transformed into kernel function coefficient optimization, and the optimization problem can be solved by the chaos adaptive artificial fish swarm algorithm, then the online predictive compensation will be made for data packet dropout of multi-packet transmission through the sliding window multi-kernel LS-SVM. After that, a sliding-mode controller design method of proportional integral differential approach law based on neural network is proposed. And online adjustment of PID approach law parameters can be achieved by nonlinear mapping of neural network. Finally, Truetime is used to simulate the method. The results shows that when the packet dropout rate is 30% and 60%, the average error of packet dropout prediction of multi-kernel LS-SVM reduces 29.21% and 44.66% compared with that of combined kernel LS-SVM, and the chattering amplitude of the proposed neural network PID approach law sliding-mode controller is decreased compared with other five approach law methods respectively. This controller can ensure a fast response speed, which shows that this method can achieve a better tracking control of the aeroengine network control system.

Numerical study of probe parameters on performance of a transonic axial compressor.

Project description:The paper shows the effect of the probe on the performance of a transonic axial speed compressor. The unobstructed flow case with the experimental data was validated and used as a guide for all subsequent study cases. The aerodynamic performance for different probe parameters were calculated numerically using ANSYS-CFX. This covered the results on compressor output from changing probe axial positions, the radial immersion depths, the size of the probe, and the total number of probes. The findings were evaluated in relation to the total pressure ratio, performance, margin of deflation and stability. The velocity part distributions further showed that the probe block and raises the flow Mach value, which is the explanation why the compressor rotor's total pressure ratio is lost. In fact, the parameters of the sample will significantly influence the calculation outcomes and affect the standard margin. The range of stability was also affected, which changes the performance trend from the choke to the stall. Consequently, the collection of correct probe parameters with fewer impact on compressor output is addressed.

Experimental Studies and Numerical Simulation of Polypyrrole Trilayer Actuators.

Project description:Conducting polymer actuators have shown wide application prospects in the field of biomedical sensors and micro-/nanorobotics. In order to explore more applications in biomedical sensing and robotics, it is essential to understand the actuator static behavior from an engineering perspective, before incorporating them into a design. In this article, we have established the mathematical model of a trilayer polypyrrole (PPy) cantilever actuator and validated it experimentally. The model helps in enhancing the efficiency and in improving the performance, predictability, and control of the actuator. The thermal expansion analogy, which is similar to volume change of the multilayer PPy actuator due to ion migration, has been considered to develop a mathematical model in COMSOL Multiphysics. To further validate the actuator deformation predicted by the mathematical modeling, a multilayer PPy actuator was fabricated by electrochemical synthesis and the experimentally determined deflection of the actuator was compared to simulation data. Both the theoretical and experimental results depict that the model is effective for predicting the bending behavior of multilayer PPy actuators at different input voltages.

Numerical simulations of drumlin formation.

Project description:We summarize the present form of the instability theory for drumlin formation, which describes the coupled subglacial flow of ice, water and sediment. This model has evolved over the last 20 years, and is now at the point where it can predict instabilities corresponding to ribbed moraine, drumlins and mega-scale glacial lineations, but efforts to provide numerical solutions of the model have been limited. The present summary adds some slight nuances to previously published versions of the theory, notably concerning the constitutive description of the subglacial water film and its flow. A new numerical method is devised to solve the model, and we show that it can be solved for realistic values of most of the parameters, with the exception of that corresponding to the water film thickness. We show that evolved bedforms can be three-dimensional and of the correct sizes, and we explore to some extent the variation of the solutions with the model's parameters.

2D Synthetic dataset of numerical simulations of long-period seismicity in a volcanic edifice and related sensitivity kernels.

Project description:This work describes the data used in the EPSL research article "Quantifying strong seismic propagation effects in the upper volcanic edifice using sensitivity kernels". The dataset is generated in order to investigate to what extent the seismic signals recorded on volcanoes are affected by near surface velocity structure. Data were calculated using the computational spectral elements scheme SPECFEM2D, where the wave propagation beneath Mount Etna volcano, Italy, was simulated in both homogeneous and heterogeneous models. The heterogeneous model comprises a low-velocity superficial structure (top several hundred meters) based on the previously published studies. Several different source mechanisms and locations were used in the simulations. The seismic wavefield was "recorded" by 15 surface receivers distributed along the surface of the volcano. The associated sensitivity kernels were also computed. These kernels highlight the region of the velocity model that affects the recorded seismogram within a desired time window. The text files describing the velocity models used in the simulations are also provided. The data may be of interest to volcano seismologists, as well as earthquake seismologists studying path effects and wave propagation through complex media.

Numerical recipes for faster MAS-DNP simulations.

Project description:Numerical simulations of Magic Angle Spinning Dynamic Nuclear Polarization (MAS-DNP) have transformed the way the DNP process is understood in rotating samples. In 2012, two methods were concomitantly developed to simulate small spin systems (< 4 spin-1/2). The development of new polarizing agents, including those containing metal centers with S > 1/2, makes it necessary to further expand the numerical tools with minimal approximations that will help rationalize the experimental observations and build approximate models. In this paper, three strategies developed in the past five years are presented: an adaptive integration scheme, a hybrid Hilbert/Liouville formalism, and a method to truncate the Liouville space basis for periodic Hamiltonian. Each of these methods enable time savings ranging from a factor of 3 to > 100. We illustrate the code performance by reporting for the first time the MAS-DNP field profiles for "AMUPol", in which the couplings to the nitrogen nuclei are explicitly considered, as well as Cross-Effect MAS-DNP field profiles with two electrons spin 5/2 interacting with a nuclear spin 1/2.

Direct numerical simulations of aeolian sand ripples.

Project description:Aeolian sand beds exhibit regular patterns of ripples resulting from the interaction between topography and sediment transport. Their characteristics have been so far related to reptation transport caused by the impacts on the ground of grains entrained by the wind into saltation. By means of direct numerical simulations of grains interacting with a wind flow, we show that the instability turns out to be driven by resonant grain trajectories, whose length is close to a ripple wavelength and whose splash leads to a mass displacement toward the ripple crests. The pattern selection results from a compromise between this destabilizing mechanism and a diffusive downslope transport which stabilizes small wavelengths. The initial wavelength is set by the ratio of the sediment flux and the erosion/deposition rate, a ratio which increases linearly with the wind velocity. We show that this scaling law, in agreement with experiments, originates from an interfacial layer separating the saltation zone from the static sand bed, where momentum transfers are dominated by midair collisions. Finally, we provide quantitative support for the use of the propagation of these ripples as a proxy for remote measurements of sediment transport.

Visual Analysis and Detection of Contrails in Aircraft Engine Simulations.

Project description:Contrails are condensation trails generated from emitted particles by aircraft engines, which perturb Earth's radiation budget. Simulation modeling is used to interpret the formation and development of contrails. These simulations are computationally intensive and rely on high-performance computing solutions, and the contrail structures are not well defined. We propose a visual computing system to assist in defining contrails and their characteristics, as well as in the analysis of parameters for computer-generated aircraft engine simulations. The back-end of our system leverages a contrail-formation criterion and clustering methods to detect contrails' shape and evolution and identify similar simulation runs. The front-end system helps analyze contrails and their parameters across multiple simulation runs. The evaluation with domain experts shows this approach successfully aids in contrail data investigation.
