Advances in Breast Cancer Management and Extracellular Vesicle Research, a Bibliometric Analysis.

ABSTRACT: Extracellular vesicles transport variable content and have crucial functions in cell-cell communication. The role of extracellular vesicles in cancer is a current hot topic, and no bibliometric study has ever analyzed research production regarding their role in breast cancer and indicated the trends in the field. In this way, we aimed to investigate the trends in breast cancer management involved with extracellular vesicle research. Articles were retrieved from Scopus, including all the documents published concerning breast cancer and extracellular vesicles. We analyzed authors, journals, citations, affiliations, and keywords, besides other bibliometric analyses, using R Studio version 3.6.2. and VOSviewer version 1.6.0. A total of 1151 articles were retrieved, and as the main result, our analysis revealed trending topics on biomarkers of liquid biopsy, drug delivery, chemotherapy, autophagy, and microRNA. Additionally, research related to extracellular vesicles in breast cancer has been focused on diagnosis, treatment, and mechanisms of action of breast tumor-derived vesicles. Future studies are expected to explore the role of extracellular vesicles on autophagy and microRNA, besides investigating the application of extracellular vesicles from liquid biopsies for biomarkers and drug delivery, enabling the development and validation of therapeutic strategies for specific cancers.

Project description:BackgroundThe coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19) pandemic is disrupting routine medical care of cancer patients, including those who have cancer or are undergoing cancer screening. In this study, breast cancer management during the COVID-19 pandemic (BCMP) is reviewed, and the research trends of BCMP are evaluated by quantitative and qualitative evaluation.MethodsIn this study, published studies relating to BCMP from 1 January 2020 to 1 April 2022 were searched from the Web of Science database (WoS). Bibliometric indicators consisted of publications, research hotspots, keywords, authors, journals, institutions, nations, and h-index.ResultsA total of 182 articles investigating BCMP were searched. The United States of America and the University of Rome Tor Vergata were the nation and the institution with the most publications on BCMP. The first three periodicals with leading published BCMP studies were Breast Cancer Research and Treatment, Breast, and In Vivo. Buonomo OC was the most prolific author in this field, publishing nine articles (9/182, 4.94%). The co-keywords analysis of BCMP suggests that the top hotspots and trends in research are screening, surgery, rehabilitation, emotion, diagnosis, treatment, and vaccine management of breast cancer during the pandemic. The hotspot words were divided into six clusters, namely, screening for breast cancer patients in the pandemic, breast cancer surgery in the pandemic, recovery of breast cancer patients in the pandemic, motion effect of the outbreak on breast cancer patients, diagnosis and treatment of breast cancer patients in the pandemic, and vaccination management for breast cancer patients during a pandemic.ConclusionBCMP has received attention from scholars in many nations over the last 3 years. This study revealed significant contributions to BCMP research by nations, institutions, scholars, and journals. The stratified clustering study provided the current status and future trends of BCMP to help physicians with the diagnosis and treatment of breast cancer through the pandemic, and provide a reference for in-depth clinical studies on BCMP.

Project description:BackgroundFerroptosis, as a novel modality of cell death, holds significant potential in elucidating the pathogenesis and advancing therapeutic strategies for breast cancer.ObjectiveThis study aims to comprehensively analyze current ferroptosis research and future trends, guiding breast cancer research advancements and innovative treatment strategies.MethodsThis research used the R package Bibliometrix (Department of Economic and Statistical Sciences at the University of Naples Federico II), VOSviewer (Centre for Science and Technology Studies at Leiden University), and CiteSpace (Drexel University's College of Information Science and Technology), to conduct a bibliometric analysis of 387 papers on breast cancer and ferroptosis from the Web of Science Core Collection. The analysis covers authors, institutions, journals, countries or regions, publication volumes, citations, and keywords.ResultsThe number of publications related to this field has surged annually, with China and the United States collaborating closely and leading in output. Sun Yat-sen University stands out among the institutions, while the journal Frontiers in Oncology and the author Efferth T contribute significantly to the field. Highly cited papers within the domain primarily focus on the induction of ferroptosis, protein regulation, and comparisons with other modes of cell death, providing a foundation for breast cancer treatment. Keyword analysis highlights the maturity of glutathione peroxidase 4-related research, with breast cancer subtypes emerging as motor themes and the tumor microenvironment, immunotherapy, and prognostic models identified as basic themes. Furthermore, the application of nanoparticles serves as an additional complement to the basic themes.ConclusionsThe current research status in the field of ferroptosis and breast cancer primarily focuses on the exploration of relevant theoretical mechanisms, whereas future trends and mechanisms emphasize the investigation of therapeutic strategies, particularly the clinical application of immunotherapy related to the tumor microenvironment. Nanotherapy has demonstrated significant clinical potential in this domain. Future research directions should deepen the exploration in this field and accelerate the clinical translation of research findings to provide new insights and directions for the innovation and development of breast cancer treatment strategies.
