Dataset of the electrochemical potential windows for the Au(hkl)|ionic liquid interfaces defined by the cut-off current densities.

ABSTRACT: This data article describes the linear sweep voltammetry (LSV) profiles of five ionic liquids (ILs) at the low-index (hkl) (hkl = 111, 100, and 110) planes of Au. The LSV profiles were recorded at 25 ± 1°C for the Au(hkl)|IL interfaces maintained in a hanging meniscus configuration in an inert Ar atmosphere (with H2O and O2 concentrations being lower than 5 ppm). The width of the electrical double-layer regions (E dl) and the electrochemical potential windows (E pw) of the ILs were evaluated based on the cut-off current densities (j cut-off): ±5, ±10, and ±20 µA cm-2 for E dl and ±0.1, ±0.5, and ±1.0 mA cm-2 for E pw. The potential values were calibrated to the redox potential of ferrocene/ferrocenium in each IL. A detailed discussion on the electrochemical behaviors of the ILs on Au(hkl) is provided in the related article "Voltammetric Investigation of Anodic and Cathodic Processes at Au(hkl)|Ionic Liquid Interfaces", published in the Journal of Electroanalytical Chemistry (Ueda and Yoshimoto, 2021).

Project description:The visuotopic organization of dorsal visual cortex rostral to area V2 in primates has been a longstanding source of controversy. Using sub-millimeter phase-encoded retinotopic fMRI mapping, we recently provided evidence for a surprisingly similar visuotopic organization in dorsal visual cortex of macaques compared to previously published maps in New world monkeys (Zhu and Vanduffel, Proc Natl Acad Sci USA 116:2306-2311, 2019). Although individual quadrant representations could be robustly delineated in that study, their grouping into hemifield representations remains a major challenge. Here, we combined in-vivo high-resolution myelin density mapping based on MR imaging (400 µm isotropic resolution) with fine-grained retinotopic fMRI to quantitatively compare myelin densities across retinotopically defined visual areas in macaques. Complementing previously documented differences in populational receptive-field (pRF) size and visual field signs, myelin densities of both quadrants of the dorsolateral posterior area (DLP) and area V3A are significantly different compared to dorsal and ventral area V3. Moreover, no differences in myelin density were observed between the two matching quadrants belonging to areas DLP, V3A, V1, V2 and V4, respectively. This was not the case, however, for the dorsal and ventral quadrants of area V3, which showed significant differences in MR-defined myelin densities, corroborating evidence of previous myelin staining studies. Interestingly, the pRF sizes and visual field signs of both quadrant representations in V3 are not different. Although myelin density correlates with curvature and anticorrelates with cortical thickness when measured across the entire cortex, exactly as in humans, the myelin density results in the visual areas cannot be explained by variability in cortical thickness and curvature between these areas. The present myelin density results largely support our previous model to group the two quadrants of DLP and V3A, rather than grouping DLP- with V3v into a single area VLP, or V3d with V3A+ into DM.

Project description:By combining cyclic voltammetry (CV) and shell-isolated nanoparticle-enhanced Raman spectroscopy (SHINERS), the adsorption behavior of two alkynes, propargyl alcohol (PA) and 2-methyl-3-butyn-2-ol (MeByOH), undergoing hydrogenation on Pt basal plane single-crystal electrodes is investigated. It is found that PA and MeByOH give rise to strong surface sensitivities in relation to both hydrogenation activity and molecular fragmentation into adsorbed species such as CO. For PA, irreversible adsorption is strongly favored for Pt{100} and Pt{110} but is weak in the case of Pt{111}. It is suggested that the presence of the primary alcohol substituent is key to this behavior, with the order of surface reactivity being Pt{100} > Pt{110} > Pt{111}. In contrast, for MeByOH, strong irreversible adsorption is observed on all three basal plane Pt surfaces and we propose that this reflects the enhanced activity of the alkyne moiety arising from the inductive effect of the two methyl groups, coupled with the decreased activity of the tertiary alcohol substituent toward fragmentation. Pt{111} also exhibits singular behavior in relation to MeByOH hydrogenation in that a sharp Raman band at 1590 cm-1 is observed corresponding to the formation of a di-σ/π-bonded surface complex as the alkyne adsorbs. This band frequency is some 20 cm-1 higher than the analogous broadband observed for PA and MeByOH adsorbed on all other basal plane Pt surfaces and may be viewed as a fingerprint of Pt{111} terraces being present at a catalyst surface undergoing hydrogenation. Insights into the hydrogenation activity of different Pt{hkl} surfaces are obtained using quantitative comparisons between Raman bands at hydrogenation potentials and at 0.4 V vs Pd/H, the beginning of the double-layer potential region, and it is asserted (with support from CV) that Pt{110} is the most active plane for hydrogenation due to the presence of surface defects generated via the lifting of the (1 × 2) to (1 × 1) clean surface reconstruction following flame annealing and hydrogen cooling. Our findings are also consistent with the hypothesis that Pt{111} planes are most likely to provide semihydrogenation selectivity of alkynes to alkenes, as reported previously.

Project description:Molecular association of proteins with nucleic acids is required for many biological processes essential to life. Electrostatic interactions via ion pairs (salt bridges) of nucleic acid phosphates and protein side chains are crucial for proteins to bind to DNA or RNA. Counterions around the macromolecules are also key constituents for the thermodynamics of protein-nucleic acid association. Until recently, there had been only a limited amount of experiment-based information about how ions and ionic moieties behave in biological macromolecular processes. In the past decade, there has been significant progress in quantitative experimental research on ionic interactions with nucleic acids and their complexes with proteins. The highly negatively charged surfaces of DNA and RNA electrostatically attract and condense cations, creating a zone called the ion atmosphere. Recent experimental studies were able to examine and validate theoretical models on ions and their mobility and interactions with macromolecules. The ionic interactions are highly dynamic. The counterions rapidly diffuse within the ion atmosphere. Some of the ions are released from the ion atmosphere when proteins bind to nucleic acids, balancing the charge via intermolecular ion pairs of positively charged side chains and negatively charged backbone phosphates. Previously, the release of counterions had been implicated indirectly by the salt-concentration dependence of the association constant.Recently, direct detection of counterion release by NMR spectroscopy has become possible and enabled more accurate and quantitative analysis of the counterion release and its entropic impact on the thermodynamics of protein-nucleic acid association. Recent studies also revealed the dynamic nature of ion pairs of protein side chains and nucleic acid phosphates. These ion pairs undergo transitions between two major states. In one of the major states, the cation and the anion are in direct contact and form hydrogen bonds. In the other major state, the cation and the anion are separated by water. Transitions between these states rapidly occur on a picosecond to nanosecond time scale. When proteins interact with nucleic acids, interfacial arginine (Arg) and lysine (Lys) side chains exhibit considerably different behaviors. Arg side chains show a higher propensity to form rigid contacts with nucleotide bases, whereas Lys side chains tend to be more mobile at the molecular interfaces. The dynamic ionic interactions may facilitate adaptive molecular recognition and play both thermodynamic and kinetic roles in protein-nucleic acid interactions.
