ABSTRACT: This data article refers to the paper "Assessing Nearly zero energy buildings (NZEBs) development in Europe" [1]. Data linked with this article relate to collected best practices NZEBs throughout Europe. Data on building geometry, year of construction or renovation, primary energy consumption, saving percentages, renewable production, heating demand are provided. Data allow an overview of the status of most commonly implemented efficiency measures and renewables in NZEBs. In particular, data are available in relation technologies, such as heating, domestic hot water, lighting, renewable sources, ventilation, cooling. Heat recovery efficiency data are also collected. U-values are detailed for roofs, walls, floors, windows. Further data can be visualized in relation to technologies costs, cost of construction and maintenance.

Project description:This data article refers to the paper "What is a Nearly zero energy building? Overview, implementation and comparison of definitions" (D׳Agostino and Mazzarella, 2019). Data linked with this article allow an overview of the European status in relation to energy consumption and energy savings in buildings. Further data are available in relation to Nearly zero energy buildings (NZEBs). Data relate to primary and final energy consumption, detailing electricity, gas, oil, coal, heat, and wood consumption from 1994 to 2014 in different countries. Data also relate to the stock of constructions of total, single-family, and multi-family dwellings in Europe. Energy consumption per different energy carriers is also given for the residential sector in European and non-European countries. Energy consumption and savings trends can be visualized. In relation to NZEBs, selected retrofit case studies in Europe are presented. Data include energy consumption, saving percentages, costs, payback period, implemented efficiency measures and renewables. Project description:This data article refers to the research paper A model for the cost-optimal design of Nearly Zero Energy Buildings (NZEBs) in representative climates across Europe [1]. The reported data deal with the design optimization of a residential building prototype located in representative European locations. The study focus on the research of cost-optimal choices and efficiency measures in new buildings depending on the climate. The data linked within this article relate to the modelled building energy consumption, renewable production, potential energy savings, and costs. Data allow to visualize energy consumption before and after the optimization, selected efficiency measures, costs and renewable production. The reduction of electricity and natural gas consumption towards the NZEB target can be visualized together with incremental and cumulative costs in each location. Data on residential nearly Zero Energy Buildings (nZEB) design in Eastern Europe.

Project description:This data article includes a dataset developed between 2020 and 2022 to characterize and analyze the state of energy efficiency of nearly zero energy buildings in ten Eastern European countries. The data article refers to the paper' Overview and future challenges of nearly zero-energy building (nZEB) design in Eastern Europe' (Attia and Kosinski et al., 2022). The data provides an overview of the status of building energy use, energy savings, and regulations for the newly constructed building stock, including Bulgaria, Croatia, Czech Republic, Estonia, Hungary, Latvia, Lithuania, Poland, Romania, and Slovakia. The importance of the dataset lies in its unique approach of data collection that provides detailed information on electricity, gas, oil, coal, and wood used in the investigated countries between 2015 and 2020. The methodology involves compiling and fusing data from national registries and depositories written in ten different national languages. Thus, the data is not available in Eurostat or any EU platform. The methodology followed to produce the data is mainly a literature review of restricted national publications and an extensive questionnaire with 14 national experts involved with the nZEB implementation plans and policies. The data include several parameters, including building energy efficiency thresholds expressed in the form of primary energy use intensity; primary energy conversion factors; renewable energy shares; building envelope performance requirements; mechanical ventilation performance requirements; thermal comfort requirements; construction rates of residential buildings; and heat pumps market penetration expressed as heat pump units per 100 households. The data paper is valuable for scientists to conduct future research to implement energy efficiency measures and renewables towards energy-neutral buildings.

Photonic microstructures for energy-generating clear glass and net-zero energy buildings.

Project description:Transparent energy-harvesting windows are emerging as practical building-integrated photovoltaics (BIPV), capable of generating electricity while simultaneously reducing heating and cooling demands. By incorporating spectrally-selective diffraction gratings as light deflecting structures of high visible transparency into lamination interlayers and using improved spectrally-selective thin-film coatings, most of the visible solar radiation can be transmitted through the glass windows with minimum attenuation. At the same time, the ultraviolet (UV) and a part of incident solar infrared (IR) radiation energy are converted and/or deflected geometrically towards the panel edge for collection by CuInSe2 solar cells. Experimental results show power conversion efficiencies in excess of 3.04% in 10 cm × 10 cm vertically-placed clear glass panels facing direct sunlight, and up to 2.08% in 50 cm × 50 cm installation-ready framed window systems. These results confirm the emergence of a new class of solar window system ready for industrial application.

Improving energy performance of buildings: Dataset of implemented energy efficiency renovation projects in Latvia.

Project description:This article includes data collected from public and private buildings in Latvia as part of several projects/tenders funded from the governmental Climate Change Financial Instrument (KPFI) of Republic of Latvia. The data provided consists of information on 445 projects, the activities performed therein, as well as numerical data on CO2 emission and energy consumption before and after the projects' implementation. Data cover a period from 2011 to 2020 for various types of buildings. Given the amount, the completeness and the accuracy of data accompanied by qualitative and quantitative information on the funded projects, the datasets could be relevant for evaluating the energy efficiency of the implemented activities and the levels of CO2 and energy reduction. The reported figures could be used for further research on the field of energy performance of buildings and buildings' refurbishments. They could be also taken as case studies by other buildings that plan to implement similar actions.

flEECe, an energy use and occupant behavior dataset for net-zero energy affordable senior residential buildings.

Project description:The behaviors of building occupants have continued to perplex scholars for years in our attempts to develop models for energy efficient housing. Building simulations, project delivery approaches, policies, and more have fell short of their optimistic goals due to the complexity of human behavior. As a part of a multiphase longitudinal affordable housing study, this dataset represents energy and occupant behavior attributes for 6 affordable housing units over nine months in Virginia, USA which are not performing to the net-zero energy standard they were designed for. This dataset provides researchers the ability to analyze the following variables: energy performance, occupant behaviors, energy literacy, and ecological perceptions. Energy data is provided at a 1?Hz sampling rate for four circuits: main, hot water heater, dryer, and HVAC. Building specifications, occupancy, weather data, and neighboring building energy use data are provided to add depth to the dataset. This dataset can be used to update building energy use models, predictive maintenance, policy frameworks, construction risk models, economic models, and more.

Best practices for eCLIP experiments and analysis [uncertain quality]

Project description:Enhanced cross-linking immunoprecipitation (eCLIP) featuring a size-matched input control has been recently applied to profile the binding sites of more than one hundred RNA binding proteins (RBPs). However computational pipelines and quality control metrics needed to process CLIP data at scale have yet to be well defined. Here, we describe our ENCODE eCLIP processing pipeline (https://github.com/YeoLab/eclip), enabling users to go from raw reads to processed peaks that are enriched above paired input, reproducible across biological replicates, and can be directly compared against the public ENCODE eCLIP resource. In particular, we discuss processing steps designed to address common artifacts, including properly quantifying unique RNA fragments bound by both unique genomic- and repetitive element-mapped reads. Using manual quality annotation of 350 ENCODE eCLIP experiments, we develop metrics for quality assessment of eCLIP experiments prior to and after sequencing, including library yield, number of unique fragments in the library, total binding relative information, and biological reproducibility. In particular, we quantify the commonly believed linkage between depth of sequencing and peak discovery, and derive methods for estimating required sequencing depth based on pre-sequencing metrics. Finally we provide recommendations for the common question of integrating RBP binding information with RNA-seq to generate splicing maps representing the positional effect of binding on alternative splicing. These pipelines and QC metrics enable large-scale processing and analysis of eCLIP data, and will help to standardize rigorous analysis of RBP binding data.
