A review of the Larainae of Australia with description of seven new species and the new genus Australara (Coleoptera, Byrrhoidea, Elmidae).

ABSTRACT: The three genera and four species of Larainae (Elmidae) previously described from Australia are reviewed, and one new genus and seven new species are described: Australaraglaisteri gen. et sp. nov., Ovolaralawrencei sp. nov., Ovolaramonteithi sp. nov., Stetholuscarinatus sp. nov., Stetholuslongipennis sp. nov., Stetholusmetatibialis sp. nov., and Stetholusworonora sp. nov. A lectotype is designated for Hydoralaticeps (Carter & Zeck), and the first new collection records of the species are reported since its description in 1932. The occurrence in Australia of Potamophilinuspapuanus Satô, described from Papua New Guinea, is reported. A key to the species, photographic images of the external morphology and male genitalia, distribution maps, and habitat and behavioral information, when known, are provided for all twelve species of Australian Larainae.

Project description:The species of the riffle beetle subfamily Larainae occurring in Venezuela are revised. Examination of 756 specimens yielded 22 species in nine genera occurring throughout the country. Seven species are newly recorded from the country: Phanoceroides sp. 1, Phanocerus clavicornis Sharp, 1882, Phanocerus congener Grouvelle, 1898, Pharceonus volcanus Spangler & Santiago-Fragoso, 1992, Disersus dasycolus Spangler & Santiago-Fragoso, 1992, Disersus chibcha Spangler & Santiago-Fragoso, 1987, and Disersus inca Spangler & Santiago-Fragoso, 1992. Nine species are found to be new to science, which are here described: Hexanchorus dentitibialis sp. n., H. falconensis sp. n., H. flintorum sp. n., H. homaeotarsoides sp. n., H. inflatus sp. n., Phanocerus rufus sp. n., Pharceonus grandis sp. n., Pharceonus ariasi sp. n., Potamophilops bostrychophallus sp. n. Three new species of the genus Zaitzevia Champion, 1923 (Coleoptera, Elmidae) from China.

Project description:Three new riffle beetles of the genus Zaitzevia Champion, 1923 are described from China, namely Zaitzeviasichuanensissp. nov. and Zaitzeviafengtongzhaiensissp. nov. from Sichuan Province, and Zaitzeviayingzuijieensissp. nov. from Hunan Province. Habitus and diagnostic features of the new species are illustrated. A checklist of all known Chinese Zaitzevia species is given, and a key and distributional map of Zaitzevia species from the Chinese mainland are provided.

Description of the putative mature larva of the Neotropical genus Stenhelmoides Grouvelle (Coleoptera: Elmidae).

Project description:Stenhelmoides Grouvelle is a Neotropical genus of Elmidae and although it exhibits a wide distribution, until now no larvae had been associated with adults of this genus. Larvae, very likely belonging to this genus, were associated based on co-occurrence with adults. Eleven larvae and nine adults were examined from ten localities at altitudes between 30 and 682?m a.s.l. in the Andean, Caribbean and Pacific regions in Colombia. Mature larvae of the Stenhelmoides rufulus (Hinton) are described and illustrated for the first time. A larval diagnosis for the genus is presented; body shape, distribution and form of setae and number of pleural sclerites are diagnostic characters for larvae of this genus. Comparative notes with similar larvae of other Elmidae genera are presented. The existing generic keys are updated to include larvae of Stenhelmoides. Comments on distribution and habitat of Stenhelmoides larvae are also provided. This work contributes to enhance the knowledge of Neotropical larvae, which have been described for only approximately 56% of genera and 8% of species of Elmidae.

Amazonopsis, an unusual new genus of riffle beetle from South America with two new species (Coleoptera, Elmidae, Elminae).

Project description:Amazonopsis gen. n. is described to include A.theranyi sp. n. from Peru, Venezuela and French Guiana, and A.camachoi sp. n. from Venezuela. The descriptions are accompanied by figures illustrating the male and female habitus of A.theranyi, the male habitus of A.camachoi, and male genitalia of both species. Amazonopsistheranyi exhibits pronounced secondary sexual dimorphism which likewise may be a characteristic of the genus. Amazonopsis males have modified protarsal and mesotarsal claws, a pair of small spines on the anterior prosternum, and a pair of ventrally directed processes on the posterior metaventrite. Females of A.theranyi display a pair of unique, oval perforations in the cuticle of the pronotum and have unmodified claws; females of A.camachoi are unknown. Descriptions are furnished of the stream habitats and microhabitats where the study specimens were collected.

Project description:A new endemic genus and seven new species of New Zealand pselaphine staphylinid beetles of the supertribe Faronitae are described as follows: Pseudoexeirarthra Park & Carlton, gen. n. (type species: Sagolaspinifer Broun); Pseudoexeirarthrasungmini Park & Carlton, sp. n.; Pseudoexeirarthrakwangguki Park & Carlton, sp. n.; Pseudoexeirarthrayoungboki Park & Carlton, sp. n.; Pseudoexeirarthraseiwoongi Park & Carlton, sp. n.; Pseudoexeirarthraparkeri Park & Carlton, sp. n.; Pseudoexeirarthrahlavaci Park & Carlton, sp. n.; Pseudoexeirarthranomurai Park & Carlton, sp. n. Three species, Sagolaspinifer Broun, Sagolacolorata Broun, and Sagolapuncticollis Broun, are transferred to the genus Pseudoexeirarthra. Six species are synonymized: Sagoladilucida Broun, Sagolaguinnessi Broun, Sagolalongicollis Broun, Sagolalongula Broun, and Sagolarectipennis Broun under Pseudoexeirarthraspinifer (Broun); Sagolainsueta Broun under Sagolacolorata (Broun). A lectotype is designated for Pseudoexeirarthraspinifer (Broun). A key, habitus photographs, line drawings of diagnostic characters, and distribution maps are provided for each species.

A review of the genus Sinocymbachus Strohecker & Chujo with description of four new species (Coleoptera, Endomychidae).

Project description:This work presents a review of species of the Asian genus Sinocymbachus Strohecker & Chûjô, 1970. Four new species are described from China: S. fanjingshanensis Chang & Bi, sp. nov., S. longipennis Chang & Bi, sp. nov., S. sinicus Chang & Bi, sp. nov., and S. wangyinjiei Chang & Bi, sp. nov. Cymbachus koreanus Chûjô & Lee, 1993 is transferred to Sinocymbachus as S. koreanus (Chûjô & Lee) comb. nov. Sinocymbachus bimaculatus (Pic, 1927) is reported for the first time from China. The male of S. parvimaculatus (Mader, 1938) is discovered and described for the first time. Illustration, diagnosis and distribution are provided for each species. Prior to the present study, Sinocymbachus included ten species. An updated key to the species of Sinocymbachus is given.

Project description:The genus Fontidessus Miller & Spangler, 2008 (Coleoptera: Dytiscidae: Hydroporinae: Bidessini) is reviewed. The genus now includes seven species with three previously described, and four new species described here: F. microphthalmus Miller & Montano, sp. n.; F. bettae Miller & Montano, sp. n.; F. christineae Miller & Montano, sp. n., and F. aquarupe Miller & Montano, sp. n. Each species is diagnosed and described, including the previously known species, based on new specimens and new information. Habitus, male genitalia and other diagnostic features are illustrated for each species. A key to the seven species is provided. Fontidessus species are unique to hygropetric habitats in the Guiana Shield craton of northern South American.

The new genus Pheude (Coleoptera, Curculionidae, Cossoninae) with description of a new species from mainland China.

Project description:A new weevil, Pheudepunctatus gen. et sp. n., of the tribe Dryotribini in Cossoninae, is described from Guangdong Province, South China. It differs from the related genera Dryotribus Horn and Microtribodes Morimoto in having antennae with seven articles and a distinct scutellum, and from Ochronanus Pascoe and Stenomimus Wollaston in having long antennae, a rostrum with a medio-longitudinal furrow beginning at the posterior margin of the eyes and extending approximately midway on the rostrum, and a moderately elevated, medio-longitudinal carina extending the full length of the pronotum. Other diagnostic characters and illustrations are provided. A key to the genera of Dryotribini known from China is given.
