FinTech and macroeconomics: Dataset from the US peer-to-peer lending platform.

ABSTRACT: We aggregate the United States (US) state-level data with LendingClub's loan book covering the period from 2008 to 2019. LendingClub is a FinTech lending company that provides loans through a technology-driven platform. It was one of the pioneering and leading US peer-to-peer (P2P) lending platforms. Our dataset consists of over two million observations (N=2,703,430) with diverse loan, borrowers and state-specific features. We provide the description of variables, descriptive statistics, and STATA code with the full dataset. The US possesses significant cross-state variation in terms of economic and demographic characteristics while having risk-sharing policies at the federal level to protect states' creditworthiness. This unique feature of our combined database creates an ideal opportunity to explore the P2P lending market within the context of macroeconomic variables. As the dataset covers a 12-year period for all US states, it enables further cross-sectional and longitudinal analyses of the FinTech lending market.

Peer-to-peer lending and bias in crowd decision-making.

Project description:Peer-to-peer lending is hypothesized to help equalize economic opportunities for the world's poor. We empirically investigate the "flat-world" hypothesis, the idea that globalization eventually leads to economic equality, using crowdfinancing data for over 660,000 loans in 220 nations and territories made between 2005 and 2013. Contrary to the flat-world hypothesis, we find that peer-to-peer lending networks are moving away from flatness. Furthermore, decreasing flatness is strongly associated with multiple variables: relatively stable patterns in the difference in the per capita GDP between borrowing and lending nations, ongoing migration flows from borrowing to lending nations worldwide, and the existence of a tie as a historic colonial. Our regression analysis also indicates a spatial preference in lending for geographically proximal borrowers. To estimate the robustness for these patterns for future changes, we construct a network of borrower and lending nations based on the observed data. Then, to perturb the network, we stochastically simulate policy and event shocks (e.g., erecting walls) or regulatory shocks (e.g., Brexit). The simulations project a drift towards rather than away from flatness. However, levels of flatness persist only for randomly distributed shocks. By contrast, loss of the top borrowing nations produces more flatness, not less, indicating how the welfare of the overall system is tied to a few distinctive and critical country-pair relationships.

Network Based Scoring Models to Improve Credit Risk Management in Peer to Peer Lending Platforms.

Project description:Financial intermediation has changed extensively over the course of the last two decades. One of the most significant change has been the emergence of FinTech. In the context of credit services, fintech peer to peer lenders have introduced many opportunities, among which improved speed, better customer experience, and reduced costs. However, peer-to-peer lending platforms lead to higher risks, among which higher credit risk: not owned by the lenders, and systemic risks: due to the high interconnectedness among borrowers generated by the platform. This calls for new and more accurate credit risk models to protect consumers and preserve financial stability. In this paper we propose to enhance credit risk accuracy of peer-to-peer platforms by leveraging topological information embedded into similarity networks, derived from borrowers' financial information. Topological coefficients describing borrowers' importance and community structures are employed as additional explanatory variables, leading to an improved predictive performance of credit scoring models.

A credit scoring model based on the Myers-Briggs type indicator in online peer-to-peer lending.

Project description:Although psychometric features have been considered for alternative credit scoring, they have not yet been applied to peer-to-peer (P2P) lending because such information is not available on platforms. This study proposed an alternative credit scoring model for P2P lending by extracting typical personality types inferred from the borrowers' job category. We projected a virtual space of borrowers by using the affinity matrix based on the Myers-Briggs type indicator (MBTI) that fits each job category. Applying the distance in this space to Lending Club data, we used locally weighted logistic regression to vary the coefficients of the variables, which affect loan repayments, with each MBTI type for predicting the default probability. We found that each MBTI type's credit scoring model has different significant variables. Why do peer-to-peer (P2P) lending platforms fail? The gap between P2P lenders' preferences and the platforms’ intentions

Project description:In the current study, we examine why peer-to-peer (P2P) lending platforms play only a minor role in the finance industry in Israel, compared to the traditional banking system. We conducted two studies and attempted to discover if a discrepancy exists between the lenders' preferences and the platforms’ incentives. In the first study, we conducted a conjoint analysis to examine the impact of lenders' decisions to invest through P2P platforms. The second study examines the factors in which platforms use to determine the lending interest rate for loans. We found that although lenders wish to decrease their risk and guarantee their investment, P2P companies encourage riskier borrowers. This contradiction between the priorities of the lenders and those of the platforms may explain why the non-users consider P2P lending to be a high risk. We offer several suggestions to increase the attractiveness of the Fintech and lending platforms industry. The macroeconomics of age-varying epidemics.

Project description:We incorporate age-specific socio-economic interactions in a SIR macroeconomic model to study the role of demographic factors for the COVID-19 epidemic evolution, its macroeconomic effects and possible containment measures. We capture the endogenous response of rational individuals who choose to reduce inter- and intra-generational social interactions, consumption- and labor-related personal exposure to the virus, while not internalizing the impact of their actions on others. Investigating the effect of different combinations of economic shutdown and social distancing we find that distancing measures targeted to the elderly (who face higher mortality risk and are not part of the labor force) save lives and mitigate output losses. Conversely, the optimal economic shutdown generates small gains in terms of lives saved and large output losses, for any given type of social distancing. These results are confirmed by calibrating the model to match real epidemic and economic data in the context of a scenario exercise.

Interpersonal lending network dataset of a Hungarian village in a disadvantaged region based on a quantitative survey

Project description:The dataset presented in this paper consists of a network of interpersonal lending relations from a single village of a deprivated area of Hungary. The data are originated from quantitative surveys from May 2014 to June 2014. The data collection was embedded in a Participatory Action Research (PAR) which aimed to investigate the financial survival strategies of low-income households in a Hungarian village in a disadvantaged region. The directed graphs of lending and borrowing are a unique dataset that empirically captures a hidden and informal financial activity between households. The network contains 164 households and 281 credit connections among them.

What determines FinTech success?—A taxonomy-based analysis of FinTech success factors

Project description:Value creation in the financial services sector has been fundamentally transformed by digitally born financial technology (FinTech) companies. FinTech companies synthesize information systems with financial services. Given its disruptive power, the FinTech phenomenon has received great attention in academic research, practice, and media. Still, limited systematic research provides a structure and holistic view of FinTechs’ success. Aiming to enhance understanding of the factors enabling FinTech success, we classify success factors across extant scientific literature on distinct FinTech business model archetypes. Our analysis reveals that the “cost–benefit dynamic of the innovation,” “technology adoption,” “security, privacy, and transparency,” “user trust,” “user-perceived quality,” and “industry rivalry” are crucial factors for FinTech success and can be seen as “grand challenges” for the FinTech ecosystem. In addition, we validate and discuss our findings with real-world examples from the FinTech industry and two interviews with stakeholders from the FinTech ecosystem. Our study contributes to the knowledge of FinTechs by providing a classification system of success factors for practitioners and researchers. Social and facilitating influences in fintech user intention and the fintech gender gap.

Project description:Given the advances in technology, Fintech is an invaluable tool which allows unbanked people to access financial services when social, cultural, economic and technological factors affect their user intentions (UI). Despite the great importance of the role of social and facilitating influences in the adoption of Fintech services, little research has been conducted on how and what influences affect Fintech user intention (FUI) and whether there is a gender gap in FUI. Therefore, this study aims to help formulate effective Fintech policies and close the gender gap by investigating the role of social and facilitating influences and sociodemographic variables in FUI. The study sample comprised 237 participants, and the data were collected through interviews with the use of a structured questionnaire in Chattogram, Bangladesh. The collected data were analysed employing exploratory factor analysis and an ordered logistic regression model. The study also examined the Fintech gender gap by applying the Blinder Oaxaca decomposition model. The results reveal that image, compatibility and the experiences of Fintech use are the positive and significant predictors of FUI, with the perceived social norm for adopting Fintech being non-informative for users. There is a significant interaction between user compatibility and experience of use in relation to Fintech. Interestingly, perceived behavioural control negatively influenced females to adopt Fintech. Furthermore, the study found a gender gap in FUI. The findings have managerial implications.

Macroecology Meets Macroeconomics: Resource Scarcity and Global Sustainability.

Project description:The current economic paradigm, which is based on increasing human population, economic development, and standard of living, is no longer compatible with the biophysical limits of the finite Earth. Failure to recover from the economic crash of 2008 is not due just to inadequate fiscal and monetary policies. The continuing global crisis is also due to scarcity of critical resources. Our macroecological studies highlight the role in the economy of energy and natural resources: oil, gas, water, arable land, metals, rare earths, fertilizers, fisheries, and wood. As the modern industrial technological-informational economy expanded in recent decades, it grew by consuming the Earth's natural resources at unsustainable rates. Correlations between per capita GDP and per capita consumption of energy and other resources across nations and over time demonstrate how economic growth and development depend on "nature's capital". Decades-long trends of decreasing per capita consumption of multiple important commodities indicate that overexploitation has created an unsustainable bubble of population and economy.

COVID-19, bank deposits, and lending.

Project description:During the pandemic, households accumulated savings in their deposit accounts as a result of a reduction in their spending, which occurred due to the restrictions on their mobility. This led to a significant increase in bank deposits for banks located in counties with a larger reduction in spending. Banks, in turn, used these additional funds to issue more real estate loans. This implies that policies that might affect household spending would lead to changes in the volume of deposits in the banking system, which have consequences on banks' loan supply.
