Trace Amount of NiP2 Cooperative CoMoP Nanosheets Inducing Efficient Hydrogen Evolution.

ABSTRACT: As a very attractive clean energy, hydrogen has a high energy density and great potential to achieve zero pollution emission. Therefore, the preparation of hydrogen evolution electrocatalysts with excellent performance is an urgent task to ameliorate the global energy shortage and environmental pollution. Here, a trace amount of NiP2 coupled with CoMoP nanosheets (NCMP) was synthesized by the one-step hydrothermal method and low-temperature phosphidation. Studies have found that although the dosage of NiP2 is very low, its appearance has been efficient to improve the hydrogen evolution reaction (HER) performance of CoMoP, which may be induced by the synergistic effect of the two different components NiP2 and CoMoP. To find the superior catalyst, the effect of Ni content on the catalyst performance is also studied, and it is found that when the dosage of Ni is 0.02 mM, NCMP-2 (2 means 0.02 mM) displays the most outstanding overpotential (10 mA cm-2) of 46 mV.

Optimizing Hydrogen Binding on Ru Sites with RuCo Alloy Nanosheets for Efficient Alkaline Hydrogen Evolution.

Project description:Ruthenium (Ru)-based catalysts, with considerable performance and desirable cost, are becoming highly interesting candidates to replace platinum (Pt) in the alkaline hydrogen evolution reaction (HER). The hydrogen binding at Ru sites (Ru-H) is an important factor limiting the HER activity. Herein, density functional theory (DFT) simulations show that the essence of Ru-H binding energy is the strong interaction between the 4dz2 orbital of Ru and the 1s orbital of H. The charge transfer between Ru sites and substrates (Co and Ni) causes the appropriate downward shift of the 4dz2 -band center of Ru, which results in a Gibbs free energy of 0.022 eV for H* in the RuCo system, much lower than the 0.133 eV in the pure Ru system. This theoretical prediction has been experimentally confirmed using RuCo alloy-nanosheets (RuCo ANSs). They were prepared via a fast co-precipitation method followed with a mild electrochemical reduction. Structure characterizations reveal that the Ru atoms are embedded into the Co substrate as isolated active sites with a planar symmetric and Z-direction asymmetric coordination structure, obtaining an optimal 4dz2 modulated electronic structure. Hydrogen sensor and temperature program desorption (TPD) tests demonstrate the enhanced Ru-H interactions in RuCo ANSs compared to those in pure Ru nanoparticles. As a result, the RuCo ANSs reach an ultra-low overpotential of 10 mV at 10 mA cm-2 and a Tafel slope of 20.6 mV dec-1 in 1 M KOH, outperforming that of the commercial Pt/C. This holistic work provides a new insight to promote alkaline HER by optimizing the metal-H binding energy of active sites.

Facile fabrication of hierarchical ultrathin Rh-based nanosheets for efficient hydrogen evolution.

Project description:Rational design of efficient and stable electrocatalysts for the hydrogen evolution reaction (HER) has attracted wide attention. Noble metal-based electrocatalysts with ultrathin structures and highly exposed active surfaces are essential to boost the HER performance, while the simple synthetic strategies remain challenging. Herein, we reported a facile urea-mediated method to synthesize hierarchical ultrathin Rh nanosheets (Rh NSs) without using toxic reducing agents and structure directing agents in the reaction. The hierarchical ultrathin nanosheet structure and grain boundary atoms endow Rh NSs with excellent HER activities, which only requires a lower overpotential of 39 mV in 0.5 M H2SO4 compared to the 80 mV of Rh nanoparticles (Rh NPs). Extending the synthesis method to alloys, hierarchical ultrathin RhNi nanosheets (RhNi NSs) can be also obtained. Benefiting from the optimization of electronic structure and abundant active surfaces, RhNi NSs only require an overpotential of 27 mV. This work provides a simple and promising method to construct ultrathin nanosheet electrocatalysts for highly active electrocatalytic performance.

Superaerophilic/superaerophobic cooperative electrode for efficient hydrogen evolution reaction via enhanced mass transfer.

Project description:Hydrogen evolution reaction (HER), as an effective method to produce green hydrogen, is greatly impeded by inefficient mass transfer, i.e., bubble adhesion on electrode, bubble dispersion in the vicinity of electrode, and poor dissolved H2 diffusion, which results in blocked electrocatalytic area and large H2 concentration overpotential. Here, we report a superaerophilic/superaerophobic (SAL/SAB) cooperative electrode to efficiently promote bubble transfer by asymmetric Laplace pressure and accelerate dissolved H2 diffusion through reducing diffusion distance. Benefiting from the enhanced mass transfer, the overpotential for the SAL/SAB cooperative electrode at -10 mA cm-2 is only -19 mV, compared to -61 mV on the flat Pt electrode. By optimizing H2SO4 concentration, the SAL/SAB cooperative electrode can achieve ultrahigh current density (-1867 mA cm-2) at an overpotential of -500 mV. We can envision that the SAL/SAB cooperative strategy is an effective method to improve HER efficiency and stimulate the understanding of various gas-involved processes.

Photoinduced semiconductor-metal transition in ultrathin troilite FeS nanosheets to trigger efficient hydrogen evolution.

Project description:The exploitation of the stable and earth-abundant electrocatalyst with high catalytic activity remains a significant challenge for hydrogen evolution reaction. Being different from complex nanostructuring, this work focuses on a simple and feasible way to improve hydrogen evolution reaction performance via manipulation of intrinsic physical properties of the material. Herein, we present an interesting semiconductor-metal transition in ultrathin troilite FeS nanosheets triggered by near infrared radiation at near room temperature for the first time. The photogenerated metal-phase FeS nanosheets demonstrate intrinsically high catalytic activity and fast carrier transfer for hydrogen evolution reaction, leading to an overpotential of 142 mV at 10 mA cm-2 and a lower Tafel slope of 36.9 mV per decade. Our findings provide new inspirations for the steering of electron transfer and designing new-type catalysts.

MOF-Derived Ultrathin Cobalt Phosphide Nanosheets as Efficient Bifunctional Hydrogen Evolution Reaction and Oxygen Evolution Reaction Electrocatalysts.

Project description:The development of a highly efficient and stable bifunctional electrocatalyst for water splitting is still a challenging issue in obtaining clean and sustainable chemical fuels. Herein, a novel bifunctional catalyst consisting of 2D transition-metal phosphide nanosheets with abundant reactive sites templated by Co-centered metal-organic framework nanosheets, denoted as CoP-NS/C, has been developed through a facile one-step low-temperature phosphidation process. The as-prepared CoP-NS/C has large specific surface area and ultrathin nanosheets morphology providing rich catalytic active sites. It shows excellent electrocatalytic performances for hydrogen evolution reaction (HER) and oxygen evolution reaction (OER) in acidic and alkaline media, with the Tafel slopes of 59 and 64 mV/dec and a current density of 10 mA/cm² at the overpotentials of 140 and 292 mV, respectively, which are remarkably superior to those of CoP/C, CoP particles, and comparable to those of commercial noble-metal catalysts. In addition, the CoP-NS/C also shows good durability after a long-term test.

Nitrogen-Doped Porous Carbon Nanosheets Strongly Coupled with Mo2C Nanoparticles for Efficient Electrocatalytic Hydrogen Evolution.

Project description:Exploring earth-abundant and noble metal-free catalysts for water electrolysis is pivotal in renewable hydrogen production. Herein, a highly active electrocatalyst of nitrogen-doped porous carbon nanosheets coupled with Mo2C nanoparticles (Mo2C/NPC) was synthesized by a novel method with high BET surface area of 1380 m2 g-1 using KOH to activate carbon composite materials. The KOH plays a key role in etching out MoS2 to produce Mo precursor; simultaneously, it corrodes carbon to form porous structure and produce reducing gas such as H2 and CO. The resulting Mo2C/NPC hybrid demonstrated superior HER activity in acid solution, with the overpotential of 166 mV at current density of 10 mA cm-2, onset overpotential of 93 mV, Tafel slope of 68 mV dec-1, and remarkable long-term cycling stability. The present strategy may provide a promising strategy to fabricate other metal carbide/carbon hybrids for energy conversion and storage.

Efficient Hydrogen and Oxygen Evolution Catalysis Using 3D-Structured Nickel Phosphosulfide Nanosheets in Alkaline Media.

Project description:Water electrolysis offers a zero-carbon route to generate renewable energy conversion systems. Herein, a self-supported nickel phosphosulfide nanosheet (NS) electrocatalyst was fabricated at a low temperature on carbon cloth, which was then subjected to Ar etching to enhance its catalytic activity. Etching resulted in better hydrogen evolution reaction (HER) and oxygen evolution reaction (OER) performance than other samples, with overpotentials of 103.1 mV (at 10 mA cm-2) and 278.9 mV (at 50 mA cm-2), respectively. The characterization results confirmed that Ar etching created a thin amorphous layer around the NiPS3 NSs, which increased the number of active sites and modulated their electronic structures. These 3D-structured NiPS3 NSs and their subsequent Ar etching process show promise for applications in overall water splitting in alkaline media.

Half-metallic carbon nitride nanosheets with micro grid mode resonance structure for efficient photocatalytic hydrogen evolution.

Project description:Photocatalytic hydrogen evolution from water has triggered an intensive search for metal-free semiconducting photocatalysts. However, traditional semiconducting materials suffer from limited hydrogen evolution efficiency owing to low intrinsic electron transfer, rapid recombination of photogenerated carriers, and lack of artificial microstructure. Herein, we report a metal-free half-metallic carbon nitride for highly efficient photocatalytic hydrogen evolution. The introduced half-metallic features not only effectively facilitate carrier transfer but also provide more active sites for hydrogen evolution reaction. The nanosheets incorporated into a micro grid mode resonance structure via in situ pyrolysis of ionic liquid, which show further enhanced photoelectronic coupling and entire solar energy exploitation, boosts the hydrogen evolution rate reach up to 1009 μmol g-1 h-1. Our findings propose a strategy for micro-structural regulations of half-metallic carbon nitride material, and meanwhile the fundamentals provide inspirations for the steering of electron transfer and solar energy absorption in electrocatalysis, photoelectrocatalysis, and photovoltaic cells.

Synthesis of Silver Nanoparticles-Modified Graphitic Carbon Nitride Nanosheets for Highly Efficient Photocatalytic Hydrogen Peroxide Evolution

Project description:As a promising metal-free photocatalyst, graphitic carbon nitride (g-C3N4) is still limited by insufficient visible light absorption and rapid recombination of photogenerated carriers, resulting in low photocatalytic activity. Here, we adjusted the microstructure of the pristine bulk-g-C3N4 (PCN) and further loaded silver (Ag) nanoparticles. Abundant Ag nanoparticles were grown on the thin-layer g-C3N4 nanosheets (CNNS), and the Ag nanoparticles decorated g-C3N4 nanosheets (Ag@CNNS) were successfully synthesized. The thin-layer nanosheet-like structure was not only beneficial for the loading of Ag nanoparticles but also for the adsorption and activation of reactants via exposing more active sites. Moreover, the surface plasmon resonance (SPR) effect induced by Ag nanoparticles enhanced the absorption of visible light by narrowing the band gap of the substrate. Meanwhile, the composite band structure effectively promoted the separation and transfer of carriers. Benefiting from these merits, the Ag@CNNS reached a superior hydrogen peroxide (H2O2) yield of 120.53 μmol/g/h under visible light irradiation in pure water (about 8.0 times higher than that of PCN), significantly surpassing most previous reports. The design method of manipulating the microstructure of the catalyst combined with the modification of metal nanoparticles provides a new idea for the rational development and application of efficient photocatalysts.

Efficient All-2D Amorphous Cobalt Sulfide Nanosheets/Multilayered Molybdenum Disulfide Hybrid Heterojunction Catalyst for Electrochemical Hydrogen Evolution.

Project description:Hydrogen energy is considered to be a critical environmentally friendly and widely sourced renewable energy source that can be used as an alternative to fossil fuels. At present, the preparation of hydrogen (H2) mainly depends on traditional fossil fuels. In order to achieve sustainable development of environmental protection, great attention has been paid to the preparation of H2 by electrocatalysis, photocatalysis, and photoelectrochemistry. Here, it is reported for the first time that a novel active catalyst for the hydrogen evolution reaction, consisting of all-2D amorphous nanosheets/2D crystal layer heterojunction structure and without any noble metal (no precious metals are present in the preparation or measuring), is almost entirely fabricated by laser ablation in liquid (LAL) growth of amorphous cobalt sulfide on the surface of multilayered molybdenum disulfide. In acidic media, the amorphous cobalt sulfide nanosheets/multilayered molybdenum disulfide (a-CoS/MoS2) catalyst exhibits fast hydrogen evolution kinetics with onset potential of -147 mV and a Tafel slope of 126 mV per decade, which is much better than only the amorphous cobalt sulfide and molybdenum disulfide layer. The high hydrogen evolution activity of the amorphous cobalt sulfide nanosheets/multilayered molybdenum disulfide hybrid is likely due to the unique electrocatalytic synergistic effects between hydrogen evolution-active amorphous cobalt sulfide nanosheets and layered crystal molybdenum disulfide materials, as well as the much-increased catalytic sites. This work provides a new general route based on all-2D amorphous nanosheets/2D crystal structure for designing and preparing novel layered materials with effectively manipulated catalytic properties and active functionality surface.
