Innovative strategies implemented by universities to support medical radiation science students during the COVID-19 pandemic.

ABSTRACT: The global COVID-19 pandemic has impacted all facets of life. In medical radiation science (MRS) education, the effects on continuity of learning were felt by educators, students and clinical supervisors both nationally and internationally. The focus of this commentary is on the common elements that impacted MRS students, specifically related to cancelled clinical placements and the interruption to their academic progress at university. An outline is provided of some innovative strategies implemented by universities and clinical departments to support students' academic progress, continuity of clinical experiences, their transition from students to practitioners and overall strategies to support student wellbeing. The recent published literature illustrates novel responses to shared challenges faced, and an opportunity to learn from collective experiences.

Project description:BackgroundCOVID-19 posed many challenges to medical education in the United Kingdom (UK). This includes implementing assessments during 4 months of national lockdowns within a 2-year period, where in-person education was prohibited. This study aimed to identify medical school assessment formats emerging during COVID-19 restrictions, investigate medical students' perspectives on these and identify influencing factors.MethodsThe study consisted of two phases: a questionnaire asking medical students about assessment changes they experienced, satisfaction with these changes and preference regarding different assessments that emerged. The second phase involved semi-structured interviews with medical students across the UK to provide a deeper contextualized understanding of the complex factors influencing their perspectives.ResultsIn the questionnaire responses, open-book assessments had the highest satisfaction, and were the preferred option indicated. Furthermore, in the case of assessment cancellation, an increase in weighting of future assessments was preferred over increase in weighting of past assessments. Students were also satisfied with formative or pass-fail assessments. Interview analyses indicate that although cancellation or replacement of summative assessments with formative assessments reduced heightened anxiety from additional COVID-19 stressors, students worried about possible future knowledge gaps resulting from reduced motivation for assessment-related study. Students' satisfaction level was also affected by timeliness of communication from universities regarding changes, and student involvement in the decision-making processes. Perceived fairness and standardisation of test-taking conditions were ranked as the most important factors influencing student satisfaction, followed closely by familiarity with the format. In contrast, technical issues, lack of transparency about changes, perceived unfairness around invigilation, and uncertainty around changes in assessment format and weighting contributed to dissatisfaction.ConclusionsOnline open-book assessments were seen as the most ideal amongst all participants, and students who experienced these were the most satisfied with their assessment change. They were perceived as most fair and authentic compared to real-life medical training. We seek to inform educators about student perceptions of successful assessment strategies under COVID-19 restrictions and provide evidence to allow debate on ongoing assessment reform and innovation. While this work looks specifically at assessment changes during COVID-19, understanding factors affecting student perception of assessment is applicable to examinations beyond COVID-19.

Project description:BackgroundThere are serious concerns regarding the effectiveness of medical education in its current format during serious crises like the COVID-19 pandemic.ObjectiveTo explore academic, financial, psychological, & hygienic impact on medical students.MethodsA cross-sectional, questionnaire-based study of students at different medical schools in Jordan. It included both basic and clinical years.ResultsThere were 415 responses. Females constituted 51.8%. Around 50% of the participants were from the 6th year (n = 194, 46.7%). University of Jordan students represented around 40% of the responders. 60% of the students have GPA (Grade Point Average) of less than 3 points. Nearly half of the students indicated that their academic grades were affected during the pandemic. Clinical years' students (51.0%) were more likely to be negatively affected than students in basic years (36.1%), P value 0.026. Sixty three percent reported that they sanitize their hands before touching eyes, nose, or mouth. More than two thirds (70.4%) of students indicated that their mental health was affected in the pandemic. Financial influence was a major aspect in around 53% of students and 34% of students were not able to pay the university fees due to the pandemic. The pandemic affected the elective training course location of 70.9% of respondents. Mental health was affected in 70.9% of students and 65.1% became more anxious or depressed with no significant difference among gender and academic years (P values 0.256 and 0.516, respectively). Students in the clinical years were more afraid of getting the infection than students in the basic years, however this difference was not statistically significant (p = 0.084).ConclusionsCovid-19 Pandemic negatively affected the academic course of the medical students especially at the clinical training years' level across Jordanian universities. COVID-19 pandemic left a negative impact on psychological & mental health of the students, too, rendering them more anxious, depressed, and afraid of coming to the hospital and handling patients.

Project description:ProblemThe COVID-19 pandemic led to changes in both the clinical environment and medical education. The abrupt shift to telemedicine in March 2020, coupled with the recommendation that medical students pause in-person clinical rotations, highlighted the need for student training in telemedicine.ApproachTo maintain students' ability to participate in clinical encounters and continue learning in the new virtual environment, a telemedicine curriculum for clinical students was rapidly developed at Harvard Medical School (HMS) focusing on the knowledge and skills needed to conduct live video encounters. Curriculum leads created an interactive, flexible curriculum to teach students clinical skills, regulatory issues, professionalism, and innovations in telemedicine. This 5-module curriculum was delivered using various primarily asynchronous modalities including webinar-style presentations, prerecorded videos of physical exams from different disciplines, shadowing a synchronous telemedicine visit, peer discussions in small groups, and quizzes with both multiple-choice and open-ended questions.OutcomesDuring May 2020, 252 clerkship and postclerkship medical students at HMS completed the telemedicine curriculum. All students completed a precourse survey and 216 (85.7%) completed the postcourse survey. Students' self-rated knowledge of telemedicine increased, on average, from 38 (15.1%) reporting being fairly/very knowledgeable over 4 domains before the course to 182 (84.3%) afterward (P < .001). The course was highly rated, with 176/205 (85.9%) students reporting that it met their learning needs and 167/205 (81.5%) finding the delivery methods to be effective. Of 101 (45.3%) students who answered an open-ended postcourse survey question, 91 (90.1%) reported asynchronous learning to be a positive experience.Next stepsAs telemedicine becomes increasingly and likely permanently integrated into the health care system, providing medical students with robust training in conducting care virtually will be essential. This curriculum provides a promising and feasible framework upon which other schools can apply these emerging competencies to design their own telemedicine curricula.
