Automatic detection of multiple types of pneumonia: Open dataset and a multi-scale attention network.

ABSTRACT: The quick and precise identification of COVID-19 pneumonia, non-COVID-19 viral pneumonia, bacterial pneumonia, mycoplasma pneumonia, and normal lung on chest CT images play a crucial role in timely quarantine and medical treatment. However, manual identification is subject to potential misinterpretations and time-consumption issues owing the visual similarities of pneumonia lesions. In this study, we propose a novel multi-scale attention network (MSANet) based on a bag of advanced deep learning techniques for the automatic classification of COVID-19 and multiple types of pneumonia. The proposed method can automatically pay attention to discriminative information and multi-scale features of pneumonia lesions for better classification. The experimental results show that the proposed MSANet can achieve an overall precision of 97.31%, recall of 96.18%, F1-score of 96.71%, accuracy of 97.46%, and macro-average area under the receiver operating characteristic curve (AUC) of 0.9981 to distinguish between multiple classes of pneumonia. These promising results indicate that the proposed method can significantly assist physicians and radiologists in medical diagnosis. Project description:BackgroundThe precise identification of the position and form of a tumor mass can improve early diagnosis and treatment. However, due to the complicated tumor categories and varying sizes and forms, the segregation of brain gliomas and their internal sub-regions is still very challenging. This study sought to design a new deep-learning network based on three-dimensional (3D) U-Net to address its shortcomings in brain tumor segmentation (BraTS) tasks.MethodsWe developed a 3D dilated multi-scale residual attention U-Net (DMRA-U-Net) model for magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) BraTS. It used dilated convolution residual (DCR) modules to better process shallow features, multi-scale convolution residual (MCR) modules in the bottom encoding path to create richer and more comprehensive feature expression while reducing overall information loss or blurring, and a channel attention (CA) module between the encoding and decoding paths to address the problem of retrieving and preserving important features during the processing of deep feature maps.ResultsThe BraTS 2018-2021 datasets served as the training and evaluation datasets for this study. Further, the proposed architecture was assessed using metrics such as the dice similarity coefficient (DSC), Hausdorff distance (HD), and sensitivity (Sens). The DMRA U-Net model segments the whole tumor (WT), and the tumor core (TC), and the enhancing tumor (ET) regions of brain tumors. Using the suggested architecture, the DSCs were 0.9012, 0.8867, and 0.8813, the HDs were 28.86, 13.34, and 10.88 mm, and the Sens was 0.9429, 0.9452, and 0.9303 for the WT, TC, and ET regions, respectively. Compared to the traditional 3D U-Net, the DSC of the DMRA U-Net increased by 4.5%, 2.5%, and 0.8%, the HD of the DMRA U-Net decreased by 21.83, 16.42, and 10.00, the Sens of the DMRA U-Net increased by 0.4%, 0.7%, and 1.4% for the WT, TC, and ET regions, respectively. Further, the results of the statistical comparison of the performance indicators revealed that our model performed well generally in the segmentation of the WT, TC, and ET regions.ConclusionsWe developed a promising tumor segmentation model. Project description:PurposeMultiple myeloma (MM) and metastasis originated are the two common malignancy diseases in the spine. They usually show similar imaging patterns and are highly demanded to differentiate for precision diagnosis and treatment planning. The objective of this study is therefore to construct a novel deep-learning-based method for effective differentiation of two diseases, with the comparative study of traditional radiomics analysis.MethodsWe retrospectively enrolled a total of 217 patients with 269 lesions, who were diagnosed with spinal MM (79 cases, 81 lesions) or spinal metastases originated from lung cancer (138 cases, 188 lesions) confirmed by postoperative pathology. Magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) sequences of all patients were collected and reviewed. A novel deep learning model of the Multi-view Attention-Guided Network (MAGN) was constructed based on contrast-enhanced T1WI (CET1) sequences. The constructed model extracts features from three views (sagittal, coronal and axial) and fused them for a more comprehensive differentiation analysis, and the attention guidance strategy is adopted for improving the classification performance, and increasing the interpretability of the method. The diagnostic efficiency among MAGN, radiomics model and the radiologist assessment were compared by the area under the receiver operating characteristic curve (AUC).ResultsAblation studies were conducted to demonstrate the validity of multi-view fusion and attention guidance strategies: It has shown that the diagnostic model using multi-view fusion achieved higher diagnostic performance [ACC (0.79), AUC (0.77) and F1-score (0.67)] than those using single-view (sagittal, axial and coronal) images. Besides, MAGN incorporating attention guidance strategy further boosted performance as the ACC, AUC and F1-scores reached 0.81, 0.78 and 0.71, respectively. In addition, the MAGN outperforms the radiomics methods and radiologist assessment. The highest ACC, AUC and F1-score for the latter two methods were 0.71, 0.76 & 0.54, and 0.69, 0.71, & 0.65, respectively.ConclusionsThe proposed MAGN can achieve satisfactory performance in differentiating spinal MM between metastases originating from lung cancer, which also outperforms the radiomics method and radiologist assessment.
