Circular RNAs (circRNAs) are a newly discovered family of regulatory RNAs generated through backsplicing. Genome-wide profiling of circRNAs found that circRNAs are ubiquitously expressed and regulate gene expression by acting as a sponge for RNA-binding proteins (RBPs) and microRNAs (miRNAs).
