Project description:This study examined product use among pregnant women and new mothers in New York City during the COVID-19 pandemic (July 2020-June 2021). Women reported use of personal care and household cleaning products within the previous month, changes in antibacterial product use, receipt of healthcare provider advice, and opinions on environmental chemicals (n = 320). On average, women used 15 personal care products and 7 household cleaning products. Non-Hispanic Black women used nearly two more personal care products; non-Hispanic Black women, those with a college degree, and essential workers used 1-3 more household cleaning products. Women who were Hispanic or reported their race and ethnicity as Other were two times more likely to use antibacterial personal care products. Non-Hispanic Black, Hispanic, and women who reported their race and ethnicity as Other were 1.5 times more likely to increase antibacterial product use during the pandemic. Nearly all women agreed that environmental chemicals pose health risks and are impossible to avoid, while less than one quarter received advice regarding product use. Product use is a modifiable source of chemical exposures. Results from this study suggest that women may have increased their product use during the pandemic. Healthcare providers may use the current focus on health hygiene to promote discussion and assessment of environmental chemical exposures with patients.

Project description:Background and study aimsDuodenoscope contamination remains a persistent problem, exposing patients to infection risks. Automation in reprocessing may limit human error, reduce workload, and increase uniformity and traceability. However, its effectiveness should be evaluated before implementation. This study assessed the impact of implementing a novel water-based automated endoscope cleaning process on duodenoscope contamination.MethodsThis before-and-after intervention study compared duodenoscope cleaning methods. From January 2022 to December 2023, conventional manual cleaning was used. From January 2024 to June 2024, the AquaTYPHOON system (AT) replaced manual cleaning. Cultures from Pentax ED34-i10T2 patient-ready duodenoscopes were collected. The main outcome was the contamination rate with microorganisms of gut or oral origin (MGO). Secondary outcomes included contamination with solely gut bacteria. Non-inferiority of the AT was tested using a generalized estimating equation with a non-inferiority margin of 5%.ResultsDuring the manual cleaning period, 333 duodenoscope cultures of eight duodenoscopes were collected; during the AT period, 100 cultures were collected. Pre-introduction of the AT, the contamination rate with MGO was 21.6%, which fell to 16% post-introduction (risk difference: -5.6%, upper bound 90% confidence interval [CI] 6.8%). For gut bacteria, the contamination rate decreased from 14.4% to 9% (risk difference: -5.4%, upper bound 90% CI 3.9%), indicating non-inferiority.ConclusionsAT reduced the contamination rate with MGO, but non-inferiority was not demonstrated. For gut bacteria, AT was non-inferior to manual cleaning. These results are promising. However, future studies should confirm these findings in larger samples and explore other advantages of using the AT in duodenoscope cleaning.

Project description:BackgroundCurrent duodenoscope reprocessing protocols are insufficient to prevent contamination and require adaptations to prevent endoscopy-associated infections (EAIs). This study aimed to investigate the effect of a new endoscope cleaning brush on the contamination rate of ready-to-use duodenoscopes.MethodsThis retrospective before-and-after intervention study collected duodenoscope surveillance culture results from March 2018 to June 2022. Contamination was defined as ≥1 colony-forming unit of a microorganism of gut or oral origin (MGO). In December 2020, an endoscope cleaning brush with a sweeper design was introduced as an intervention in the manual cleaning of duodenoscopes. A logistic mixed-effects model was used to study the effects of this intervention.ResultsData were collected from 176 culture sets before the new brush's introduction and 81 culture sets afterwards. Pre-introduction, culture sets positive with an MGO comprised 45.5% (95%CI 38.3%-52.8%; 80/176), decreasing to 17.3% (95%CI 10.6%-26.9%; 14/81) after implementation of the new brush. Compared with the former brush, duodenoscopes cleaned with the new brush had lower odds of contamination with MGOs (adjusted odds ratio 0.25, 95%CI 0.11-0.58; P=0.001) CONCLUSIONS: Use of the new brush in manual cleaning reduced contamination with MGOs and is expected to prevent EAIs. These findings should be confirmed in future prospective randomized studies.

Project description:The LumenEye scope and CHiP platform will be piloted in a number of clinical settings including remote colorectal clinics. The rationale is to perform an initial pilot study to determine the clinical utility of the LumenEye device for use in primary and secondary care settings.
The main hypothesis is that digital rectoscopy is safe and acceptable to clinicians including general practitioners and can significantly reduce the burden of endoscopy referral to and within secondary care centres.

Project description:After hotels in many countries were forced to close in government-imposed lockdowns during the COVID-19 pandemic, there is an inherent need to communicate how they deal with the coronavirus to motivate guests to visit. However, lack of knowledge about how to persuasively communicate about hotels' cleaning programs for COVID-19 can challenge the industry's survival. We investigated how hotels that position their brand as a particular personality (sincere vs. exciting) could benefit from different communication styles (inclusion of numerical vs. verbal quantifiers) when presenting their COVID-19 cleaning procedures. Study 1 explored tourists' central attitudinal responses toward hotels' cleaning programs. Study 2 demonstrated that sincere hotel brands would benefit from using numerical and verbal quantifiers to communicate their cleaning policies, whereas exciting hotel brands would benefit only from numerical quantifiers. Our results invite hotel managers to use their brand personality positioning to influence tourists' attitudes and intentions in a pandemic context.

Project description:Oil-water separation has recently become a global challenging task because of the frequent occurrence of oil spill accidents due to the offshore oil production and transportation, and there is an increasing demand for the development of effective and inexpensive approaches for the cleaning-up of the oily pollution in water system. In this study, a self-cleaning underwater superoleophobic mesh that can be used for oil-water separation is prepared by the layer-by-layer (LbL) assembly of sodium silicate and TiO2 nanoparticles on the stainless steel mesh. The integration of the self-cleaning property into the all-inorganic separation mesh by using TiO2 enables the convenient removal of the contaminants by ultraviolet (UV) illumination, and allows for the facile recovery of the separation ability of the contaminated mesh, making it promising for practial oil-water separation applications.

Project description:IntroductionCleaning protocols were changed in response to the COVID-19 pandemic with unknown occupational health impacts. There is evidence that COVID-19 transmission risks from contaminated surfaces are low and that exposure to cleaning products can increase risks of work-related asthma. The study objective was to investigate relationships between reported COVID-19-related changes in cleaning protocols and prevalence of asthma-related respiratory symptoms for asthmatic and non-asthmatic janitors and maids. A secondary objective was to characterize experiences of respiratory symptoms associated with cleaning and barriers to personal protective equipment (PPE) use.MethodsEmployees from two Tucson-based maid service companies (approximately 30 personnel in total) and one Phoenix-based school district (>300 janitors/custodians) were invited to participate in a written survey and/or a one-on-one interview in Spanish or English. Fisher's exact tests (α = 0.05) were used to test for statistically significant associations between reported respiratory symptoms by self-reported physician-diagnosed asthma status and changes in cleaning protocols. Interviews were transcribed and then analyzed by at least two researchers in English or Spanish.ResultsEighty-three percent reported that cleaning protocols had changed during COVID-19, with the two most reported changes including increased cleaning frequency (92%) and change of application type (e.g., fog, spray, wipe) (53%). There was a statistically significant association between multiple respiratory symptoms and self-reported physician diagnosed asthma. Reporting a type of application change (e.g., fog, spray, wipe) and being awakened during the night by attack/episode of cough were statistically significantly associated (p = 0.04). Interviews elucidated respiratory issues related to fogging devices.DiscussionThis study provides preliminary evidence that changes in cleaning and disinfection protocols during COVID-19 (namely, the use of fogging/mechanical spraying devices) may have had negative impacts on the health of workers in the cleaning industry with little benefit to reducing COVID-19 risks. Further research is needed to evaluate the generalizability of our findings across larger geographical areas and to develop guidance for employers and employees on how to protect and promote respiratory health.

Project description:Various insects can entrap and stabilize air plastrons and bubbles underwater. When these bubbles interact with surfaces underwater, they create air capillary bridges that de-wet surfaces and even allow underwater reversible adhesion. In this study, a robotic arm with interchangeable three-dimensional (3D)-printed bubble-stabilizing units is used to create air capillary bridges underwater for manipulation of small objects. Particles of various sizes and shapes, thin sheets and substrates of diverse surface tensions, from hydrophilic to superhydrophobic, can be lifted, transported, placed, and oriented using one- or two-dimensional arrays of bubbles. Underwater adhesion, derived from the air capillary bridges, is quantified depending on the number, arrangement, and size of bubbles and the contact angle of the counter surface. This includes a variety of commercially available materials and chemically modified surfaces. Overall, it is possible to manipulate millimeter- to sub-millimeter-scale objects underwater. This includes cleaning submerged surfaces from colloids and arbitrary contaminations, folding thin sheets to create three-dimensional structures, and precisely placing and aligning objects of various geometries. The robotic underwater manipulator can be used for automation and control in cell culture experiments, lab-on-chip devices, and manipulation of objects underwater. It offers the ability to control the transport and release of small objects without the need for chemical adhesives, suction-based adhesion, anchoring devices, or grabbers.
