Poverty reduction in rural China: Does the digital finance matter?

ABSTRACT: As digital finance is widely spread and applied in China, this new format of financial technology could become a new way to reduce poverty in rural areas. By matching digital financial indexes of the prefectural-level cities with microdata on rural households from the China Household Finance Survey (CHFS) in 2017, we find that digital finance significantly suppresses absolute poverty and relative poverty among rural households in China, which is supported by a series of robustness tests, such as the instrumental variable approach, using alternative specifications, and excluding extreme observations. Additionally, we provide evidence that the poverty reduction effect of digital finance is likely to be explained by alleviating credit constraints and information constraints, broadening social networks, and promoting entrepreneurship. Our findings further complement the research field on financial poverty reduction and offer insights for the development of public financial policies of poverty reduction in other countries, especially in some developing countries.

Project description:Digital finance provides a long-tail mechanism for alleviating relative poverty caused by unequal opportunities and rights. According to the inference of an improved Cobb-Douglas production function and Ramsey-Cass-Koopmans two-stage household consumption model, the long-tail mechanism for digital finance to alleviate the relative poverty of farmers includes productive investment mechanism, credit mechanism, financial asset allocation and entrepreneurial mechanism. An empirical analysis of 11,519 rural households across China based on CHFS2019 data shows that digital finance can significantly and steadily alleviate relative poverty by improving credit availability and promoting household entrepreneurship, while its effect on increasing productive investment opportunities and optimizing financial asset allocation is less certain. Therefore, it is necessary to continue to improve the "blood making" long tail mechanism of digital finance for farmers' credit and innovation and entrepreneurship, and at the same time guide the digital finance to empower the development of rural industries to increase farmers' productive investment opportunities, cultivate endogenous growth momentum, and improve the wealth allocation function of rural digital financial market.

Digital inclusive finance, rural revitalization and rural consumption.

Project description:With the rapid development of technology and the evolution of the global financial system, digital inclusive finance has become a new way to promote rural revitalization and rural residents' consumption with the power of financial technology. This study explores the relationship between digitally inclusive finance, rural revitalization, and rural residents' consumption. Based on the panel data of 30 provinces and cities in China from 2011 to 2021, this study empirically examines the impact of digitally inclusive finance on rural residents' consumption and the mediating and threshold effects of rural revitalization. The results reveal that digitally inclusive finance is conducive to the enhancement of rural residents' consumption, and rural revitalization acts as a mediator. Meanwhile, there is a nonlinear positive correlation between the impact of digitally inclusive finance and rural revitalization on rural residents' consumption, in which there is a double-threshold effect of digitally inclusive finance and rural revitalization in the lagged period. Based on the above findings, we believe that while promoting digitally inclusive finance, it is important to promote rural revitalization strategy in a timely manner, improve rural infrastructure, and continuously stimulate the impact of digitally inclusive finance on rural residents' consumption.

Digital inclusive finance & the high-quality agricultural development: Prevalence of regional heterogeneity in rural China.

Project description:Developing digital inclusive finance is one of the most effective ways to alleviate financial exclusion in the agriculture sector. For empirical investigation, data from 30 provinces of Rural China is collected from the period 2011 to 2020. The study constructs five dimensions and 22 indicators in total to critically conduct the impact of digital inclusive finance on high-quality agricultural development. The level of agricultural development is measured by entropy weight TOPSIS, and the impact of digital inclusive finance on its high-quality development is empirically tested. The results show that digital inclusive finance has significantly improved the agricultural sector and, particularly, the Eastern region of China has the greatest impact. Three dimensions of digital inclusion finance have regional heterogeneity in terms of impact on agricultural development in Rural China. Data does not show the simple linear relationship between digital inclusion finance and agricultural development quality. The impact of the former on the latter is characterized by the double thresholds. The digital inclusive finance index is the weakest when it is lower than the first threshold that is 4.7704, and the impact of the second threshold that is 5.3186 on high-quality agricultural development is gradually enhanced. After crossing the second threshold, the impact of digital inclusive finance on high-quality agricultural development in Rural China is significantly enhanced. The development of digital inclusive finance should be strengthened in the Central and Western regions to compensate for regional financial imbalances and promote synergy in the high-quality development of agriculture across the country.

Rural infrastructure and poverty in China.

Project description:The study develops a theoretical framework of how irrigation and drainage infrastructure and rural transportation infrastructure influence poverty. Using panel data on 31 provinces in China from 2002 to 2017, this paper estimates basic and continuous difference-in-differences (DID) models to investigate the preliminary impact of irrigation and drainage infrastructure and rural transportation infrastructure on poverty and further explores the influence mechanisms of these rural infrastructures on poverty by using the mediating effect model. The results show that irrigation and drainage facilities infrastructure can directly reduce poverty. On the one hand, rural transportation infrastructure directly leads to rural hollowing out and aggravates rural poverty; on the other hand, it indirectly promotes poverty reduction by stimulating economic growth. Overall, the positive and negative effects of rural transportation infrastructure on poverty offset each other.

Digital inclusive finance and asset allocation of Chinese residents: Evidence from the China Household Finance Survey.

Project description:Combined with the expected utility theory, this paper constructs a theoretical analysis framework including the development level, financial literacy, and intelligence level of Inclusive Finance, puts forward the hypothesis of the development of digital Inclusive Finance on household asset allocation, and uses the data of China's household finance survey to verify the theory proposed in this paper. The empirical results show that: (1) digital inclusive Finance can significantly improve the allocation proportion of household risk assets, promote the rational participation of households in the risk financial market, and improve the allocation efficiency of household resources. (2) Digital inclusive finance can significantly improve the income level of family financial investment and optimize family investment decision-making.

Solar photovoltaic interventions have reduced rural poverty in China.

Project description:Since 2013, China has implemented a large-scale initiative to systematically deploy solar photovoltaic (PV) projects to alleviate poverty in rural areas. To provide new understanding of China's targeted poverty alleviation strategy, we use a panel dataset of 211 pilot counties that received targeted PV investments from 2013 to 2016, and find that the PV poverty alleviation pilot policy increases per-capita disposable income in a county by approximately 7%-8%. The effect of PV investment is positive and significant in the year of policy implementation and the effect is more than twice as high in the subsequent two to three years. The PV poverty alleviation effect is stronger in poorer regions, particularly in Eastern China. Our results are robust to alternative specifications and variable definitions. We propose several policy recommendations to sustain progress in China's efforts to deploy PV for poverty alleviation.

How digital finance affects income distribution: Evidence from 280 cities in China.

Project description:This paper empirically tests the relationship between digital finance and income distribution of residents in 280 cities in China from 2011 to 2020 using linear and nonlinear models, respectively. Based on the Greenwood-Jovanovic (G-J) theory of output grow, the empirical study shows that there is a Kuznets effect of digital finance development on the income distribution of Chinese residents, and most regions have not yet crossed the inflection point of the bell-shaped curve, and the income gap within regions will continue to increase with the development of digital finance. Furthermore, the threshold model test shows that the positive effect of digital finance on the income disparity of residents may initially increase with the increase of regional economic level. However, when the regional economic development reaches a higher stage, the negative effect of digital finance development on the income distribution of residents will be significantly reduced.

Can digital finance reduce industrial pollution? New evidence from 260 cities in China.

Project description:Industrial pollution reduction is a crucial issue in the pursuit of sustainable economic and environmental development. As a product of the deep integration of traditional finance and Internet information technology, digital finance has become an effective tool for regulating the use of funds and strengthening the effectiveness of policies in the context of the digital era, which has obvious effects on industrial pollution emissions. Using panel data of 260 prefecture-level cities in China from 2011-2019 and the digital inclusive finance index jointly compiled by Peking University and Ant Financial Services Group, this paper empirically analyzes the impact of digital finance on industrial pollution emissions through fixed effects model, mediating effects model and threshold effects model. The empirical results show that digital finance can effectively reduce industrial pollution and part of the impact is achieved through industrial structure. In the process of reducing industrial pollution by digital finance, there exists double threshold effects. When the development of digital finance breaks the threshold value, the industrial pollution emission reduction effect appears to accelerate. Finally, this paper puts forward targeted suggestions to promote industrial pollution reduction and environmental economic development.

Does the digital finance revolution validate the Environmental Kuznets Curve? Empirical findings from China.

Project description:In recent years, digital finance has become a crucial part of the financial system and reshaped the mode of green finance in China. Digital finance has brought certain impact on economic growth, industrial structure, and resident income, which may affect pollution. The nexus of digital finance and environment in China is thus worth exploring. By revising the traditional Environmental Kuznets Curve model with income inequality variable, this paper decomposes the environmental effects of economic activities into income growth effect, industrial structure effect and income inequality effect, and use panel data of China's provinces to conduct an empirical analysis. The results reveal the following: (1) the Environmental Kuznets Curve is still valid in sample, and digital finance can reduce air and water pollution (as measured through SO2 and COD emission) directly; (2) in the influence mechanism, digital finance can alleviate income inequality and promote green industrial structure, thus reducing pollution indirectly, but the scale effect of income growth outweighs the technological effect, which increases pollution indirectly; and (3) digital finance has a threshold effect on improving the environment, then an acceleration effect appears after a certain threshold value. From the regional perspective, digital finance development in eastern regions is generally ahead of central and western regions, and the effects of environmental improvement in the eastern regions are greater. According to the study, this paper suggest that digital finance can be an effective way to promote social sustainability by alleviating income inequality and environmental sustainability by reducing pollution.

The impact of green finance on total factor carbon emission reduction efficiency in China.

Project description:Based on an analysis of the relationship between green finance and total factor carbon emission reduction efficiency, this article measures the levels of green finance and total factor carbon emission reduction efficiency in 30 provinces and cities in China. It also establishes a spatial Durbin model to quantitatively explore the impact of green finance on China's total factor carbon emission reduction efficiency. The results indicate that currently, green finance and total factor carbon emission reduction efficiency in China follow a distribution pattern of high in the east, medium in the central region, and low in the west. The impact of green finance on total factor carbon emission reduction efficiency demonstrates a U-shaped relationship, and the spatial spillover effect between the two displays a similar U-shaped trend. The mechanism analysis demonstrates that green finance exerts a U-shaped influence on the efficiency of reducing total factor carbon emissions through the interplay of technological progress and technical efficiency enhancements. Other variables, such as research and development investment, comprehensive energy consumption, human capital, infrastructure construction, and government regulation, also have an impact on total factor carbon emission reduction efficiency. Therefore, it is recommended that regions strengthen their green finance initiatives, support efforts to carbon emission reduction, and contribute towards achieving the "dual-carbon" goal.
