Viciamingyueshanensis (Fabeae, Papilionoideae, Fabaceae), a new species from western Jiangxi, China.

ABSTRACT: Viciamingyueshanensis, a new species from the Mingyue Mountain Region of western Jiangxi, China, is described and illustrated. It is a perennial climbing liana that always links to riparian woods. A morphological comparison indicated that the new species is closely similar to Viciataipaica K. T. Fu and Viciadichroantha Diels; however, it differs from the other two species by several salient characters, such as plant indumentum, stipule shape, corolla colour, bractlet shape and calyx shape. Photographs, a preliminary conservation assessment, table of morphological characters and distribution map comparing this new species to two morphologically-similar species are also provided.

Paraphlomisjinggangshanensis (Lamiaceae), a new species from Jiangxi, China.

Project description:Paraphlomisjinggangshanensis (Lamiaceae), a new species from Jiangxi Province, China, is described and illustrated. The new species is morphologically similar to P.intermedia, but can be easily distinguished from the latter by its cordate leaf base (vs. cuneate, decurrent), stem and calyx tube with glandular hairs (vs. short pubescent), and glabrous anthers (vs. ciliate anthers). A phylogenetic analysis, based on ITS regions, suggests that P.jinggangshanensis represents a separate branch in Paraphlomis and is closely related to Clade II. It is currently known only from Jinggangshan National Natural Reserve. Because of its limited distribution and small population size, the species was assessed as Near Threatened (NT) according to the IUCN Red List Categories and Criteria.

Plastid genome evolution in tribe Desmodieae (Fabaceae: Papilionoideae).

Project description:Recent plastid genome (plastome) studies of legumes (family Fabaceae) have shown that this family has undergone multiple atypical plastome evolutions from each of the major clades. The tribe Desmodieae belongs to the Phaseoloids, an important but systematically puzzling clade within Fabaceae. In this study, we investigated the plastome evolution of Desmodieae and analyzed its phylogenetic signaling. We sequenced six complete plastomes from representative members of Desmodieae and from its putative sister Phaseoloid genus Mucuna. Those genomes contain 128 genes and range in size from 148,450 to 153,826 bp. Analyses of gene and intron content revealed similar characters among the members of Desmodieae and Mucuna. However, there were also several distinct characters identified. The loss of the rpl2 intron was a feature shared between Desmodieae and Mucuna, whereas the loss of the rps12 intron was specific to Desmodieae. Likewise, gene loss of rps16 was observed in Mucuna but not in Desmodieae. Substantial sequence variation of ycf4 was detected from all the sequenced plastomes, but pseudogenization was restricted to the genus Desmodium. Comparative analysis of gene order revealed a distinct plastome conformation of Desmodieae compared with other Phaseoloid legumes, i.e., an inversion of an approximately 1.5-kb gene cluster (trnD-GUC, trnY-GUA, and trnE-UUC). The inversion breakpoint suggests that this event was mediated by the recombination of an 11-bp repeat motif. A phylogenetic analysis based on the plastome-scale data set found the tribe Desmodieae is a highly supported monophyletic group nested within the paraphyletic Phaseoleae, as has been found in previous phylogenetic studies. Two subtribes (Desmodiinae and Lespedezinae) of Desmodieae were also supported as monophyletic groups. Within the subtribe Lespedezinae, Lespedeza is closer to Kummerowia than Campylotropis.

Primulinajiulianshanensis, a new species of Gesneriaceae from Jiangxi Province, China.

Project description:Primulinajiulianshanensis F.Wen & G.L.Xu, a new species of Gesneriaceae from Jiulianshan National Nature Reserve of Jiangxi Province, China, is described and illustrated here. Molecular evidence showed it was sister to P.wenii Jian Li & L.J.Yan, while the morphological observation found clear differences between them, petiole, both sides of leaf blades, adaxial surface of the calyx lobes, corolla inside toward the bottom, bract margins covered glandular-pubescent hairs in P.jiulianshanensis (vs. no glandular-pubescent hairs in P.wenii); lateral bracts 4-9 × ca. 2 mm, the central one 2-5 × 1-1.5 mm, adaxially glabrous but sparsely pubescent at apex (vs. lateral bracts 14-16 × 2.5-3.0 mm, the central one 10-12 × 1.3-1.6 mm, all adaxially pubescent); calyx lobes 8-11 × ca. 2 mm, each side with several brown serrate teeth at apex (vs. 14-15 × ca. 2.5 mm, margin entire); filaments and staminodes sparsely yellow glandular-puberulent (vs. white, glabrous).

New species and records of Diaporthe from Jiangxi Province, China.

Project description:Diaporthe species have often been reported as important plant pathogens, saprobes and endophytes on a wide range of plant hosts. Although several Diaporthe species have been recorded, little is known about species able to infect forest trees in Jiangxi Province. Hence, extensive surveys were recently conducted in Jiangxi Province, China. A total of 24 isolates were identified and analysed using comparisons of DNA sequence data for the nuclear ribosomal internal transcribed spacer (ITS), calmodulin (cal), histone H3 (his3), partial translation elongation factor-1α (tef1) and β-tubulin (tub2) gene regions, as well as their morphological features. Results revealed five novel taxa, D. bauhiniae, D. ganzhouensis, D. schimae, D. verniciicola, D. xunwuensis spp. nov. and three known species, D. apiculatum, D. citri and D. multigutullata.

Characterization of porcine sapelovirus prevalent in western Jiangxi, China.

Project description:BackgroundPorcine sapelovirus (PSV) infection can lead severe polioencephalomyelitis with high morbidity and mortality, which result in significant economic losses. Infection with the PSV is believed to be common yet limited information is available on the prevalence and molecular characterization of PSV in China. Therefore, the objective of this study was to characterize the prevalence and genome of PSV strains identified in the western Jiangxi province of China.ResultsA high specificity and sensitivity SYBR Green I-based RT-PCR method for PSV detection was developed. Two hundred and ninety four fecal samples were collected from December 2018 to March 2019 in 4 farms. An overall PSV-positivity rate of 11.22% (33/294) was detected with the real-time RT-PCR method, and a high infection rate and viral load of PSV were found in nursery pigs. In total, complete VP1 gene sequences of 11 PSV strains (PSV-YCs) were obtained. Homology comparisons of the VP1 gene of the 11 PSV-YCs with previously reported PSVs revealed nucleotide sequence identities ranging from 63% to 96.8%, and deduced amino acid sequence identities from 61.4% to 99.7%. Phylogenetic analyses based on the VP1 gene exhibited 2 main clades corresponding to PSV-1 and PSV-2, and all PSV-YCs prevalent in western Jiangxi belonged to the traditional genotype (PSV-1). In addition, the pairwise distances of VP1 gene sequences between PSV-YCs ranged from 0.009 to 0.198, which indicating that substantial genetic diversity among the PSVs in western Jiangxi.ConclusionsTo the authors' knowledge, this is the first description of PSV in the Jiangxi province pig herds in China, and it is crucial to understand the epidemiology of the viruses in China. The results also provide an important theoretical foundation for diagnosis and early warning of epidemic diseases caused by PSVs prevailing in this region.

It is characterized by having the prostrate habit, usually 13-17-foliolate leaves and the relatively small (3-5 mm long) flowers. Morphological comparisons with its closest relatives, I.rigioclada, I.franchetii, I.chaetodonta, and I.henryi are also presented.
