Near infrared photothermoelectric effect in transparent AZO/ITO/Ag/ITO thin films.

ABSTRACT: A new concept of oxide-metal-oxide structures that combine photothermoelectric effect with high reflectance (~ 80%) at wavelengths in the infrared (> 1100 nm) and high transmittance in the visible range is reported here. This was observed in optimized ITO/Ag/ITO structure, 20 nm of Silver (Ag) and 40 nm of Indium Tin Oxide (ITO), deposited on Aluminum doped Zinc Oxide (AZO) thin film. These layers show high energy saving efficiency by keeping the temperature constant inside a glazed compartment under solar radiation, but additionally they also show a photothermoelectric effect. Under uniform heating of the sample a thermoelectric effect is observed (S = 40 mV/K), but when irradiated, a potential proportional to the intensity of the radiation is also observed. Therefore, in addition to thermal control in windows, these low emission coatings can be applied as transparent photothermoelectric devices.

Tunable near-infrared epsilon-near-zero and plasmonic properties of Ag-ITO co-sputtered composite films.

Project description:Series of co-sputtered silver-indium tin oxide (Ag-ITO) films are systematically fabricated. By tuning the atomic ratio of silver, composite films are manifested to have different microstructures with limited silver amount (<3 at.%). Two stages for film morphology changing are proposed to describe different status and growth mechanisms. The introduction of silver improves the preferred orientations of In2O3 component significantly. Remarkably, dielectric permittivity of Ag-ITO films is highly adjustable, allowing the cross-over wavelengths λc to be changed by more than 300 nm through rapid post-annealing, and thus resulting in tunable epsilon-near-zero and plasmonic properties in the near-infrared region. Lower imaginary permittivity compared with pure metal films, as well as larger tunability in λc than pure ITO films suggest the potentiality of Ag-ITO films as substituted near-infrared plasmonic materials. Extended Maxwell-Garnett model is applied for effective medium approximation and the red-shifting of epsilon-near-zero region with the increase of silver content is well-fitted. Angle-variable prism coupling is carried out to reveal the surface plasmon polariton features of our films at optical communication wavelength. Broad dips in reflectance curves around 52-56° correspond to the SPP in Ag-ITO films.

High quality transparent conductive Ag-based barium stannate multilayer flexible thin films.

Project description:Transparent conductive multilayer thin films of silver (Ag)-embedded barium stannate (BaSnO3) structures have been deposited onto flexible polycarbonate substrates by magnetron sputtering at room temperature to develop an indium free transparent flexible electrode. The effect of thicknesses of Ag mid-layer and barium stannate layers on optical and electrical properties were investigated, and the mechanisms of conduction and transmittance were discussed. The highest value of figure of merit is 25.5 × 10-3 Ω-1 for the BaSnO3/Ag/BaSnO3 multilayer flexible thin films with 9 nm thick silver mid-layer and 50 nm thick barium stannate layers, while the average optical transmittance in the visible range from 380 to 780 nm is above 87%, the resistivity is 9.66 × 10-5 Ω · cm, and the sheet resistance is 9.89 Ω/sq. The change rate of resistivity is under 10% after repeated bending of the multilayer flexible thin films. These results indicate that Ag-based barium stannate multilayer flexible thin films can be used as transparent flexible electrodes in various flexible optoelectronic devices.

Structural optical and electrical properties of a transparent conductive ITO/Al-Ag/ITO multilayer contact.

Project description:Indium tin oxide (ITO) is a widely used material for transparent conductive oxide (TCO) films due to its good optical and electrical properties. Improving the optoelectronic properties of ITO films with reduced thickness is crucial and quite challenging. ITO-based multilayer films with an aluminium-silver (Al-Ag) interlayer (ITO/Al-Ag/ITO) and a pure ITO layer (as reference) were prepared by RF and DC sputtering. The microstructural, optical and electrical properties of the ITO/Al-Ag/ITO (IAAI) films were investigated before and after annealing at 400 °C. X-ray diffraction measurements show that the insertion of the Al-Ag intermediate bilayer led to the crystallization of an Ag interlayer even at the as-deposited stage. Peaks attributed to ITO(222), Ag(111) and Al(200) were observed after annealing, indicating an enhancement in crystallinity of the multilayer films. The annealed IAAI film exhibited a remarkable improvement in optical transmittance (86.1%) with a very low sheet resistance of 2.93 ?/sq. The carrier concentration increased more than twice when the Al-Ag layer was inserted between the ITO layers. The figure of merit of the IAAI multilayer contact has been found to be high at 76.4 × 10-3 ?-1 compared to a pure ITO contact (69.4 × 10-3 ?-1). These highly conductive and transparent ITO films with Al-Ag interlayer can be a promising contact for low-resistance optoelectronics devices.

Highly Transparent Red Organic Light-Emitting Diodes with AZO/Ag/AZO Multilayer Electrode.

Project description:Free-form factor optoelectronics is becoming more important for various applications. Specifically, flexible and transparent optoelectronics offers the potential to be adopted in wearable devices in displays, solar cells, or biomedical applications. However, current transparent electrodes are limited in conductivity and flexibility. This study aims to address these challenges and explore potential solutions. For the next-generation transparent conductive electrode, Al-doped zinc oxide (AZO) and silver (AZO/Ag/AZO) deposited by in-line magnetron sputtering without thermal treatment was investigated, and this transparent electrode was used as a transparent organic light-emitting diode (OLED) anode to maximize the transparency characteristics. The experiment and simulation involved adjusting the thickness of Ag and AZO and OLED structure to enhance the transmittance and device performance. The AZO/Ag/AZO with Ag of 12 nm and AZO of 32 nm thickness achieved the results of the highest figure of merit (FOM) (Φ550 = 4.65 mΩ-1) and lowest roughness. The full structure of transparent OLED (TrOLED) with AZO/Ag/AZO anode and Mg:Ag cathode reached 64.84% transmittance at 550 nm, and 300 cd/m2 at about 4 V. The results demonstrate the feasibility of adopting flexible substrates, such as PET, without the need for thermal treatment. This research provides valuable insights into the development of transparent and flexible electronic devices.

High-Performance Ag-NWs Doped Graphene/ITO Hybrid Transparent Conductive Electrode.

Project description:Indium tin oxide (ITO) is a commonly used material for transparent conductive electrodes (TCE) in optoelectronic applications. On the other hand, graphene has superior electrical conductivity and exceptional mechanical flexibility, which makes it a promising candidate as a TCE material. This work proposes a CVD graphene/ITO hybrid electrode enhanced by doping with silver nanowires (Ag-NWs). The study aims to improve the performance of the electrode by optimizing two key parameters during the fabrication process: the thermal annealing time after the transfer of graphene on ITO and the Ag-NWs doping conditions. The annealing treatment is fundamental to reducing the residues on the surface of graphene and increasing the interface contact between graphene and ITO. The correct coverage and distribution of the dopant on graphene is obtained by controlling the concentration of the Ag-NWs and the spin coating speeds. The results indicate a substantial improvement in the optical and electrical performance of the Ag-NWs/graphene/ITO hybrid electrode. A remarkably low sheet resistance of 42.4 Ω/sq (±2 Ω/sq) has been achieved while maintaining a high optical transmittance of 87.3% (±0.5%).

Copper antimony sulfide thin films for visible to near infrared photodetector applications.

Project description:Ternary chalcostibite copper antimony sulfide (CuSbS2) is an emerging semiconductor material having applications in photovoltaics, energy storage and optoelectronics due to its high absorption coefficient, suitable bandgap, and it consists of non-toxic and earth abundant elements. CuSbS2 thin films are prepared by combining chemical bath deposition (antimony sulfide (Sb2S3)) and thermal evaporation (copper (Cu)) followed by a heat treatment and their application as visible to near infrared photodetectors is reported. Crystalline structure, elemental composition, chemical state, morphology and optoelectronic properties of the films were characterized by various techniques. The effect of three different Cu thicknesses (CAS 20, CAS 30 and CAS 40 nm) on the photodetection properties are evaluated under illumination using light emitting diodes (LEDs) and a laser. The photodetectors fabricated are successfully tested under different wavelengths, power densities and applied voltage and their photoresponse cyclic stability for each wavelength of illumination was recorded. From the sensitivity calculations, the sample with 20 nm Cu thickness (CAS 20) showed higher detection sensitivity for visible to near infrared wavelengths. Better responsivity results were obtained for CAS 40 because of its improved crystallinity and phase purity. Photodetector properties such as sensitivity and responsivity are evaluated for all the samples. These results are beneficial for cost effective and environment friendly photodetectors and optoelectronic devices based on CuSbS2 thin films.

Resistive switching and battery-like characteristics in highly transparent Ta<sub>2</sub>O<sub>5</sub>/ITO thin-films.

Project description:Highly transparent resistive-switching (RS) devices were fabricated by growing amorphous tantalum pentoxide (a-Ta2O5) and indium tin oxide (a-ITO) thin films on barium-borosilicate glass (7059) substrates, using electron beam evaporation. These layers exhibited the transmittance greater than ~ 85% in the full visible region and showed RS behavior and battery-like IV characteristics. The overall characteristics of RS can be tuned using the top electrode and the thickness of a-Ta2O5. Thinner films showed a conventional RS behavior, while thicker films with metal electrodes showed a battery-like characteristic, which could be explained by additional redox reactions and non-Faradaic capacitive effects. Devices having battery-like IV characteristics showed higher enhanced, retention and low-operation current.

Optimizing strontium ruthenate thin films for near-infrared plasmonic applications.

Project description:Several new plasmonic materials have recently been introduced in order to achieve better temperature stability than conventional plasmonic metals and control field localization with a choice of plasma frequencies in a wide spectral range. Here, epitaxial SrRuO3 thin films with low surface roughness fabricated by pulsed laser deposition are studied. The influence of the oxygen deposition pressure (20-300 mTorr) on the charge carrier dynamics and optical constants of the thin films in the near-infrared spectral range is elucidated. It is demonstrated that SrRuO3 thin films exhibit plasmonic behavior of the thin films in the near-infrared spectral range with the plasma frequency in 3.16-3.86 eV range and epsilon-near-zero wavelength in 1.11-1.47 μm range that could be controlled by the deposition conditions. The possible applications of these films range from the heat-generating nanostructures in the near-infrared spectral range, to metamaterial-based ideal absorbers and epsilon-near-zero components, where the interplay between real and imaginary parts of the permittivity in a given spectral range is needed for optimizing the spectral performance.

Rapid photonic curing effects of xenon flash lamp on ITO-Ag-ITO multilayer electrodes for high throughput transparent electronics.

Project description:High-throughput transparent and flexible electronics are essential technologies for next-generation displays, semiconductors, and wearable bio-medical applications. However, to manufacture a high-quality transparent and flexible electrode, conventional annealing processes generally require 5 min or more at a high temperature condition of 300 °C or higher. This high thermal budget condition is not only difficult to apply to general polymer-based flexible substrates, but also results in low-throughput. Here, we report a high-quality transparent electrode produced with an extremely low thermal budget using Xe-flash lamp rapid photonic curing. Photonic curing is an extremely short time (~ μs) process, making it possible to induce an annealing effect of over 800 °C. The photonic curing effect was optimized by selecting the appropriate power density, the irradiation energy of the Xe-flash lamp, and Ag layer thickness. Rapid photonic curing produced an ITO-Ag-ITO electrode with a low sheet resistance of 6.5 ohm/sq, with a high luminous transmittance of 92.34%. The low thermal budget characteristics of the rapid photonic curing technology make it suitable for high-quality transparent electronics and high-throughput processes such as roll-to-roll.
