Project description:Perovskite light-emitting diodes (PeLEDs) have shown excellent performance in the green and near-infrared spectral regions, with high color purity, efficiency, and brightness. In order to shift the emission wavelength to the blue, compositional engineering (anion mixing) and quantum-confinement engineering (reduced-dimensionality) have been employed. Unfortunately, LED emission profiles shift with increasing driving voltages due to either phase separation or the coexistence of multiple crystal domains. Here we report color-stable sky-blue PeLEDs achieved by enhancing the phase monodispersity of quasi-2D perovskite thin films. We selected cation combinations that modulate the crystallization and layer thickness distribution of the domains. The perovskite films show a record photoluminescence quantum yield of 88% at 477 nm. The corresponding PeLEDs exhibit stable sky-blue emission under high operation voltages. A maximum luminance of 2480 cd m-2 at 490 nm is achieved, fully one order of magnitude higher than the previous record for quasi-2D blue PeLEDs.

Project description:High fluorescent graphene quantum dots (GQDs) are promising in bioimaging and optoelectronics. In this paper, bright blue fluorescent N-doped GQDs were synthesized using a ultrasonic-assisted hydrothermal method. The morphology, structure, surface chemistry, optical properties, and stability subject to photo-bleaching, temperature, pH and preservation period for the N-GQDs were investigated in detail using various microscopy and spectroscopy techniques. The results showed that the N-GQDs possessed an average size of 2.65 nm, 3.57% N doping, and up to 54% quantum yield (QY). The photoluminescence (PL) spectra of the N-GQDs are excitation dependent when excited in the range of 300-370 nm and excitation independent in the range of 380-500 nm for the core and surface states emission. The N-GQDs showed excellent photo-bleaching resistance and superior photo-stability. At room temperature and in the pH range of 3-8, the fluorescence of the N-GQDs was almost invariable. The N-GQDs can be stably preserved for at least 40 days. The average decay lifetime of the N-GQDs was 2.653 ns, and the radiative and nonradiative decay rate constants were calculated to be 2.04 × 108 s-1 and 1.73 × 108 s-1, respectively. The PL mechanism was qualitatively explained. The N-GQDs was used for cell imaging, and it showed good results, implying great potential applications for bioimaging or biomarking.

Project description:IntroductionEvolution of organic light-emitting diodes (OLEDs) reached the point, which allows to obtain maximum internal quantum efficiency of 100% partly using heavy-metal-free emitters exhibiting thermally activated delayed fluorescence (TADF). Such emitters are also predictively perfect candidates for new generation of optical sensors since triplet harvesting can be sensitive to different analytes (at least to oxygen). Although many organic TADF emitters have been reported so far as OLED emitters, the investigation of materials suitable for both OLEDs and optical sensors remains extremely rare.ObjectivesAiming to achieve high photoluminescence quantum yields in solid-state and triplet harvesting abilities of organic semiconductors with efficient bipolar charge transport required for application in both blue OLEDs and optical sensors, symmetrical donor-acceptor-donor organic emitters containing pyrimidine-5-carbonitrile electron-withdrawing scaffold and carbazole, tert-butylcarbazole and methoxy carbazole donor moieties were designed, synthesized and investigated as the main objectives of this study.MethodsNew compounds were tested by many experimental methods including optical and photoelectron spectroscopy, time of flight technique, electrochemistry and thermal analyses.ResultsDemonstrating advantages of the molecular design, the synthesized emitters exhibited sky-blue efficient TADF with reverse intersystem crossing rates exceeding 106 s-1, aggregation-induced emission enhancement with photoluminescence quantum yields in solid state exceeding 50%, hole and electron transporting properties with charge mobilities exceeding 10-4 cm2/V·s, glass-forming properties with glass transition temperatures reaching 177 °C. Sky-blue OLEDs with non-doped light-emitting layers of the synthesized emitter showed maximum external efficiency of 12.8% while the doped device with the same emitter exhibited maximum external efficiency of 14%. The synthesized emitters were also used as oxygen probes for optical sensors with oxygen sensitivity estimated by the Stern-Volmer constant of 3.24·10-5 ppm-1.ConclusionThe developed bipolar TADF emitters with pyrimidine-5-carbonitrile and carbazole moieties showed effective applicability in both blue OLEDs and optical sensors.

Project description:Stable deep blue multiresonance emitters with small full width at half maximum (FWHM) are attractive for wide color-gamut organic light-emitting diodes (OLEDs). However, the steric repulsion from the spatially close hydrogens would twist the multiresonance skeletons, causing spectral broadening and molecular instability issues. Here, we strategically introduce a mesitylboron locking unit into a carbazole-embedded multiresonance model emitter, alleviating the hydrogen repulsions and also strengthening the para-positioned weak carbon-nitrogen bond in anionic states. An emission peaking at 452 nm with an FWHM of merely 14 nm and nearly BT.2020 blue chromaticity coordinates are obtained in toluene, affording a high maximum external quantum efficiency of 33.9% in a sensitizing device. Moreover, an impressive LT97 (time to decay to 97% of the initial luminance) of 178 hours at a constant current density of 12 mA/cm2 was achieved in a stable device with a small y coordinate of 0.057, nearly 20 times longer than the model emitter with even a substantially red-shifted emission.

Project description:We report on the convenient synthesis of a CNC pincer ligand composed of carbazole and two mesoionic carbenes, as well as the corresponding lithium- and magnesium complexes. Mono-deprotonation affords a rare "naked" amide anion. In contrast to the proligand and its mono-deprotonated form, tri-deprotonated s-block complexes show bright luminescence, and their photophysical properties were therefore investigated by absorption- and luminescence spectroscopy. They reveal a quantum yield of 16% in solution at ambient temperature. Detailed quantum-chemical calculations assist in rationalizing the emissive properties based on an Intra-Ligand-Charge-Transfer (ILCT) between the carbazolido- and mesoionic carbene ligands. (Earth-)alkali metals prevent the distortion of the ligand following excitation and, thus, by avoiding non-radiative deactivation support bright luminescence.

Project description:Eu(iii) complexes emit red light with a high color purity and have consequently attracted attention for development toward display and physical sensing applications. The characteristic pure color emission originates from the intra-4f-4f transition, and the brightness strongly depends on the electronic and steric structures of organic ligands. A large π-conjugated ligand design with a large absorption coefficient has been actively studied for achieving bright emission. The π-conjugated Eu(iii) luminophores also provide oxygen and temperature sensing properties by controlling their excited state dynamics based on π-electron systems. A comprehensive understanding of the design strategy of large π-conjugated ligands is crucial for the further development of luminescent Eu(iii) complexes. In this review, we summarize the research progress on π-conjugated Eu(iii) luminophores exhibiting bright emission and their physical sensing applications.

Project description:A new deep-blue emitting and highly fluorescent anthracene (ANTH) derivative containing perfluorobenzyl (BnF) groups, 9,10-ANTH(BnF)2, was synthesized in a single step reaction of ANTH or ANTH(Br)2 with BnFI, using either a high-temperature Cu-/Na2S2O3-promoted reaction or via a room-temperature photochemical reaction. Its structure was elucidated by NMR spectroscopy and single crystal X-ray diffractometry. The latter revealed no π-π interaction between neighboring ANTH cores. A combination of high photoluminescence quantum yield (PLQY) of 0.85 for 9,10-ANTH(BnF)2, its significantly improved photostability compared to ANTH and 9,10-ANTH derivatives, and a simple synthetic access makes it an attractive material as a deep-blue OLED emitter and an efficient fluorescent probe.

Project description:Río Celeste (Sky-Blue River) in Tenorio National Park (Costa Rica), a river that derives from the confluence and mixing of two colorless streams--Río Buenavista (Buenavista River) and Quebrada Agria (Sour Creek)--is renowned in Costa Rica because it presents an atypical intense sky-blue color. Although various explanations have been proposed for this unusual hue of Río Celeste, no exhaustive tests have been undertaken; the reasons hence remain unclear. To understand this color phenomenon, we examined the physico-chemical properties of Río Celeste and of the two streams from which it is derived. Chemical analysis of those streams with ion-exchange chromatography (IC) and inductively coupled plasma atomic emission spectroscopy (ICP-OES) made us discard the hypothesis that the origin of the hue is due to colored chemical species. Our tests revealed that the origin of this coloration phenomenon is physical, due to suspended aluminosilicate particles (with diameters distributed around 566 nm according to a lognormal distribution) that produce Mie scattering. The color originates after mixing of two colorless streams because of the enlargement (by aggregation) of suspended aluminosilicate particles in the Río Buenavista stream due to a decrease of pH on mixing with the acidic Quebrada Agria. We postulate a chemical mechanism for this process, supported by experimental evidence of dynamic light scattering (DLS), zeta potential measurements, X-ray diffraction and scanning electron microscopy (SEM) with energy-dispersive spectra (EDS). Theoretical modeling of the Mie scattering yielded a strong coincidence between the observed color and the simulated one.

Project description:Structural colors have been reported instead of conventional dye- or pigment-based color filters. Color selectivity can degrade as structure-based optical resonances are accompanied by several resonance modes. In this work, we suggest a simple and effective design of the plasmonic color filter (PCF) that integrated the PCF with the one-dimensional (1D) photonic crystal (PhC). The introduced PhC creates an optical band gap and suppresses undesired peaks of the PCF caused by the high-order resonance mode. Finally, the suggested structure provides a high color purity. This study can be a guideline for technology that replaces conventional color filters.

Project description:A novel sky-blue-emitting tripyrenylpyridine derivative, 2,4,6-tri(1-pyrenyl)pyridine (2,4,6-TPP), has been synthesized using a Suzuki coupling reaction and compared with three previously reported isomeric dipyrenylpyridine (DPP) analogues (2,4-di(1-pyrenyl)pyridine (2,4-DPP), 2,6-di(1-pyrenyl)pyridine (2,6-DPP), and 3,5-di(1-pyrenyl)pyridine (3,5-DPP)). As revealed by single-crystal X-ray analysis and computational simulations, all compounds possess highly twisted conformations in the solid state with interpyrene torsional angles of 42.3°-57.2°. These solid-state conformations and packing variations of pyrenylpyridines could be correlated to observed variations in physical characteristics such as photo/thermal stability and spectral properties, but showed only marginal influence on electrochemical properties. The novel derivative, 2,4,6-TPP, exhibited the lowest degree of crystallinity as revealed by powder X-ray diffraction analysis and formed amorphous thin films as verified using grazing-incidence wide-angle X-ray scattering. This compound also showed high thermal/photo stability relative to its disubstituted analogues (DPPs). Thus, a nondoped organic light-emitting diode (OLED) prototype was fabricated using 2,4,6-TPP as the emissive layer, which displayed a sky-blue electroluminescence with Commission Internationale de L'Eclairage (CIE) coordinates of (0.18, 0.34). This OLED prototype achieved a maximum external quantum efficiency of 6.0 ± 1.2% at 5 V. The relatively high efficiency for this simple-architecture device reflects a good balance of electron and hole transporting ability of 2,4,6-TPP along with efficient exciton formation in this material and indicates its promise as an emitting material for design of blue OLED devices.
