Island formation of Er(trensal) single-ion magnets on graphene observed on the micrometer scale.

ABSTRACT: We have studied the morphology of Er(trensal) single-ion molecular magnets adsorbed on graphene/Ru(0001) using X-ray photoemission electron microscopy (X-PEEM). By exploiting the elemental contrast at the erbium M₅ edge we observe the formation of molecular islands of homogeneous height with a lateral size of several micrometers. The graphene/Ru(0001) substrate exhibits two different signal levels in bright-field low-energy electron microscopy (LEEM) and in X-PEEM, which are ascribed to the presence of small-angle rotational domains of the graphene lattice. We find that the Er(trensal) molecules form islands solely on the bright areas, while the remaining dark areas are empty. Our results are important for the growth and study of the molecule-inorganic hybrid approach in spintronics schemes.

Project description:Mononuclear lanthanide-based single-ion magnets (SIMs) are known since 2003 with the discovery of SIM properties in a bis-(phthalocyaninato)lanthanide complex. A recent report on [Dy(Cpttt)2][BC6F5] indicating that it exhibits the highest known blocking temperature (60 K) has spurred fresh interest in this area. In this article, we discuss about the various requirements of lanthanide-based SIMs along with representative examples. Specifically, we describe the complexes whose coordination numbers vary from 2 to 8. We also discuss the representative examples of organometallic lanthanide complexes that can function as molecular magnets.

Tetracoordinate Co(II) complexes with semi-coordination as stable single-ion magnets for deposition on graphene.

Project description:We present a theoretical and experimental study of two tetracoordinate Co(II)-based complexes with semi-coordination interactions, i.e., non-covalent interactions involving the central atom. We argue that such interactions enhance the thermal and structural stability of the compounds, making them appropriate for deposition on substrates, as demonstrated by their successful deposition on graphene. DC magnetometry and high-frequency electron spin resonance (HF-ESR) experiments revealed an axial magnetic anisotropy and weak intermolecular antiferromagnetic coupling in both compounds, supported by theoretical predictions from complete active space self-consistent field calculations complemented by N-electron valence state second-order perturbation theory (CASSCF-NEVPT2), and broken-symmetry density functional theory (BS-DFT). AC magnetometry demonstrated that the compounds are field-induced single-ion magnets (SIMs) at applied static magnetic fields, with slow relaxation of magnetization governed by a combination of quantum tunneling, Orbach, and direct relaxation mechanisms. The structural stability under ambient conditions and after deposition was confirmed by X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS) and Raman spectroscopy. Theoretical modeling by DFT of different configurations of these systems on graphene revealed n-type doping of graphene originating from electron transfer from the deposited molecules, confirmed by electrical transport measurements and Raman spectroscopy.

Trigonally Distorted Hexacoordinate Co(II) Single-Ion Magnets.

Project description:By simple reactions involving various cobalt(II) carboxylates (acetate and in situ prepared pivalate and 4-hydroxybenzoate salts) and neocuproine (neo), we were able to prepare three different carboxylate complexes with the general formula [Co(neo)(RCOO)2] (R = -CH3 for 1, (CH3)3C- for 2, and 4OH-C4H6- for 3). The [Co(neo)(RCOO)2] molecules in the crystal structures of 1-3 adopt a rather distorted coordination environment, with the largest trigonal distortion observed for 1, whereas 2 and 3 are similarly distorted from ideal octahedral geometry. The combined theoretical and experimental investigations of magnetic properties revealed that the spin Hamiltonian formalism was not a valid approach and the L-S Hamiltonian had to be used to reveal very large magnetic anisotropies for 1-3. The measurements of AC susceptibility showed that all three compounds exhibited slow-relaxation of magnetization in a weak external static magnetic field, and thus can be classified as field-induced single-ion magnets. It is noteworthy that 1 also exhibits a weak AC signal in a zero-external magnetic field.

Correlation between micrometer-scale ripple alignment and atomic-scale crystallographic orientation of monolayer graphene.

Project description:Deformation normal to the surface is intrinsic in two-dimensional materials due to phononic thermal fluctuations at finite temperatures. Graphene's negative thermal expansion coefficient is generally explained by such an intrinsic property. Recently, friction measurements on graphene exfoliated on a silicon oxide surface revealed an anomalous anisotropy whose origin was believed to be the formation of ripple domains. Here, we uncover the atomistic origin of the observed friction domains using a cantilever torsion microscopy in conjunction with angle-resolved photoemission spectroscopy. We experimentally demonstrate that ripples on graphene are formed along the zigzag direction of the hexagonal lattice. The formation of zigzag directional ripple is consistent with our theoretical model that takes account of the atomic-scale bending stiffness of carbon-carbon bonds and the interaction of graphene with the substrate. The correlation between micrometer-scale ripple alignment and atomic-scale arrangement of exfoliated monolayer graphene is first discovered and suggests a practical tool for measuring lattice orientation of graphene.

Cyclooctatetraenide-based single-ion magnets featuring bulky cyclopentadienyl ligand.

Project description:We report a family of organometallic rare-earth complexes with the general formula (COT)M(Cpttt) (where (COT)2- = cyclooctatetraenide, (Cpttt)- = 1,2,4-tri(tert-butyl)cyclopentadienide, M = Y(iii), Nd(iii), Dy(iii) and Er(iii)). Similarly to the prototypical Er(iii) analog featuring pentamethylcyclopentadienyl ligand (Cp*)-, (COT)Er(Cpttt) behaves as a single-ion magnet. However, the introduction of the sterically demanding (Cpttt)- imposes geometric constraints that lead to a simplified magnetic relaxation behavior compared to the (Cp*)- containing complexes. Consequently, (COT)Er(Cpttt) can be viewed as a model representative of this organometallic single-ion magnet architecture. In addition, we demonstrate that the increased steric profile associated with the (Cpttt)- ligand permits preparation, structural characterization and interrogation of magnetic properties of the early-lanthanide complex, (COT)Nd(Cpttt). Such a mononuclear derivative could not be obtained when a (Cp*)- ligand was employed, a testament to larger ionic radius of this early lanthanide ion.

Ultrafast Jahn-Teller Photoswitching in Cobalt Single-Ion Magnets.

Project description:Single-ion magnets (SIMs) constitute the ultimate size limit in the quest for miniaturizing magnetic materials. Several bottlenecks currently hindering breakthroughs in quantum information and communication technologies could be alleviated by new generations of SIMs displaying multifunctionality. Here, ultrafast optical absorption spectroscopy and X-ray emission spectroscopy are employed to track the photoinduced spin-state switching of the prototypical complex [Co(terpy)2 ]2+ (terpy = 2,2':6',2″-terpyridine) in solution phase. The combined measurements and their analysis supported by density functional theory (DFT), time-dependent-DFT (TD-DFT) and multireference quantum chemistry calculations reveal that the complex undergoes a spin-state transition from a tetragonally elongated doublet state to a tetragonally compressed quartet state on the femtosecond timescale, i.e., it sustains ultrafast Jahn-Teller (JT) photoswitching between two different spin multiplicities. Adding new Co-based complexes as possible contenders in the search for JT photoswitching SIMs will greatly widen the possibilities for implementing magnetic multifunctionality and eventually controlling ultrafast magnetization with optical photons.

Sublimable chloroquinolinate lanthanoid single-ion magnets deposited on ferromagnetic electrodes.

Project description:A new family of chloroquinolinate lanthanoid complexes of the formula A+[Ln(5,7Cl2q)4]-, with Ln = Y3+, Tb3+ and Dy3+ and A+ = Na+, NEt4+ and K0.5(NEt4)0.5+, is studied, both in bulk and as thin films. Several members of the family are found to present single-molecule magnetic behavior in bulk. Interestingly, the sodium salts can be sublimed under high vacuum conditions retaining their molecular structures and magnetic properties. These thermally stable compounds have been deposited on different substrates (Al2O3, Au and NiFe). The magnetic properties of these molecular films show the appearance of cusps in the zero-field cooled curves when they are deposited on permalloy (NiFe). This indicates a magnetic blocking caused by the interaction between the single-ion magnet and the ferromagnet. X-ray absorption spectroscopy confirms the formation of hybrid states at the molecule/metal interface.

Magnetic properties of on-surface synthesized single-ion molecular magnets.

Project description:We perform on-surface synthesis of single-ion molecular magnets on an Ag(111) surface and characterize their morphology, chemistry, and magnetism. The first molecule we synthesize is TbPc2 to enable comparison with chemically synthesized and subsequently surface adsorbed species. We demonstrate the formation of TbPc2 with a yield close to 100% and show that on-surface synthesis leads to identical magnetic and morphological properties compared to the previously studied chemically synthesized species. Moreover, exposure of the surface adsorbed TbPc2 molecules to air does not modify their magnetic and morphological properties. To demonstrate the versatility of our approach, we synthesize novel Tb double deckers using tert-butyl-substituted phthalocyanine (tbu-2H-Pc). The Tb(tbu-Pc)2 molecules exhibit magnetic hysteresis and therefore are the first purely on-surface synthesized single ion magnet.

Engineering atomic-scale magnetic fields by dysprosium single atom magnets.

Project description:Atomic scale engineering of magnetic fields is a key ingredient for miniaturizing quantum devices and precision control of quantum systems. This requires a unique combination of magnetic stability and spin-manipulation capabilities. Surface-supported single atom magnets offer such possibilities, where long temporal and thermal stability of the magnetic states can be achieved by maximizing the magnet/ic anisotropy energy (MAE) and by minimizing quantum tunnelling of the magnetization. Here, we show that dysprosium (Dy) atoms on magnesium oxide (MgO) have a giant MAE of 250 meV, currently the highest among all surface spins. Using a variety of scanning tunnelling microscopy (STM) techniques including single atom electron spin resonance (ESR), we confirm no spontaneous spin-switching in Dy over days at ≈ 1 K under low and even vanishing magnetic field. We utilize these robust Dy single atom magnets to engineer magnetic nanostructures, demonstrating unique control of magnetic fields with atomic scale tunability.

Micrometer-scale transient ion transport for real-time pH assay in living rat brains.

Project description:Ion transport has been widely used for various applications such as sensing, desalination and energy conversion; however, nearly all applications are based on steady-state ion transport. Herein, we for the first time demonstrate the capability of transient ion transport for in vivo sensing with both high spatial (∼μm) and temporal (∼ms) resolution by using pH as the model target. Transient ion transport behavior (i.e., time-dependent ion current change) was observed by applying high-frequency pulse potential. Importantly, we proposed the ion distribution transient model for this time-dependent ion transport behavior. With this model, the temporal resolution of the as-developed pH microsensor based on ion current was improved to the ms level, thus satisfying the requirement of neurochemical recording. Moreover, our microsensor features good reproducibility, selectivity, and reversibility, and can thus real-time monitor the pH change in living rat brains. This study demonstrates the first example of in vivo sensing based on ion transport, opening a new way to neurochemical monitoring with ultrahigh spatiotemporal resolution. This study is also helpful to understand the transient process of asymmetric ion transport.
