An attempt to synthesize a terthienyl-based analog of indacenedithiophene (IDT): unexpected synthesis of a naphtho[2,3-b]thiophene derivative.

ABSTRACT: We report herein our attempt to synthesize an analog of indacenedithiophene (IDT) based on a tetraphenylhexyl substituted, covalently bridged syn-terthienyl unit. Instead of the expected compound the adopted synthetic route led to the formation of an unexpected, new naphtho[2,3-b]thiophene derivative. The structure of this compound was fully characterized by NMR and HRMS as well as single crystal X-ray diffraction and its electronic properties have been analyzed by UV-vis absorption spectroscopy and cyclic voltammetry. A possible mechanism for the formation of this compound is also proposed on the basis of detailed theoretical investigations.

Synthesis, Photochemistry, Computational Study and Potential Application of New Styryl-Thiophene and Naphtho-Thiophene Benzylamines.

Project description:In this research, the synthesis, photochemistry, and computational study of new cis- and trans-isomers of amino-thienostilbenes is performed to test the efficiency of their production and acid resistance, and to investigate their electronic structure, photoreactivity, photophysical characteristics, and potential biological activity. The electronic structure and conformations of synthesized thienostilbene amines and their photocyclization products are examined computationally, along with molecular modeling of amines possessing two thiophene rings that showed inhibitory potential toward cholinesterases. New amino-styryl thiophenes, with favorable photophysical properties and proven acid resistance, represent model compounds for their water-soluble ammonium salts as potential styryl optical dyes. The comparison with organic dyes possessing a trans-aminostilbene subunit as the scaffold shows that the newly synthesized trans-aminostilbenes have very similar absorbance wavelengths. Furthermore, their functionalized cis-isomers and photocyclization products are good candidates for cholinesterase inhibitors because of the structural similarity of the molecular skeleton to some already proven bioactive derivatives.

The structure features C-H⋯O inter-actions involving meth-oxy and aromatic H atoms and the carbonyl O atoms as well as a C-H⋯Cl inter-action involving an aromatic H atom. Crystal structures of two 2,3-di-ethyl-naphtho-[2,3-g]quinoxaline-6,11-dione derivatives.

Project description:Two new 5,12-disubstituted 2,3-di-ethyl-naphtho-[2,3-g]quinoxaline-6,11-dione compounds were readily synthesized from the commercial dye quinizarin. For 2,3-diethyl-5,12-di-hydroxy-naphtho-[2,3-g]quinoxaline-6,11-dione, (II), C20H16N2O4, the mol-ecule displays a near planar conformation and both hy-droxy groups participate in intra-molecular O-H⋯O(carbon-yl) hydrogen bonds. In the crystal, π-π ring inter-actions [minimum ring centroid separation = 3.5493 (9) Å] form stacks of co-planar mol-ecules down the c axis, while only minor inter-molecular C-H⋯O inter-actions are present. In contrast, in 2,3-diethyl-5,12-bis-(piperidin-1-yl)naphtho-[2,3-g]quinoxaline-6,11-dione, (IV), C30H34N4O2, which contains two independent, but similar, mol-ecules in the asymmetric unit, the polycyclic cores have a significant twist, with dihedral angles of 29.79 (6) and 29.31 (7)° between the terminal rings and only minor inter-molecular C-H⋯O hydrogen-bonding inter-actions are present. Synthesis and Properties of Dibenzo-Fused Naphtho[2,3-b:6,7-b']disilole and Naphtho[2,3-b:6,7-b']diphosphole.

Project description:Silole- and phosphole-containing polycyclic aromatic compounds have attracted significant attention in the field of organic functional materials. The structure of the aromatic units has great impact on the photophysical properties of the resulting silole- and phosphole-containing polycyclic aromatic compounds. Here, dibenzo-fused naphtho[2,3-b:6,7-b']disilole (NDS) and naphtho[2,3-b:6,7-b']diphosphole (NDP), where a naphthalene unit is arranged between two silole and phosphole units, respectively, were designed and synthesized. The solid-state structures of them were confirmed by X-ray crystallographic analysis. The photophysical properties were evaluated by UV-vis absorption and photoluminescence spectroscopies and compared with those of their related compounds, such as dibenzo-fused silolo[3,2-b]silole and benzo[1,2-b:4,5-b']disilole, ever reported. The longest wavelength absorption band of a series of silole-fused compounds was found to be red-shifted in the order benzo[1,2-b:4,5-b']disilole < NDS < silolo[3,2-b]silole derivatives. For a series of phosphole-fused compounds, π-extension from phospholo[3,2-b]phosphole to NDP derivatives induces the lower absorption coefficient of the longest wavelength absorption band and the red-shift of the second longest wavelength absorption band. Both NDS and NDP exhibit much lower fluorescence quantum yields than their related compounds.

Project description:In the title compound, C(19)H(14)OS, the naphtho-thio-phene moiety is almost planar except for the S atom of the five-membered ring, which is situated 0.047 (6) Å out of the C(4) plane (with an r.m.s. deviation of fitted atoms = 0.0009 Å). The dihedral angle between the naphtho-thio-phene plane and the attached meth-oxy-phenyl ring is 67.6 (2)°. In the crystal, a C-H⋯π inter-action is observed between a meth-oxy-phenyl C-H group and the outer benzene ring of the naphtho-thio-phene moiety. The five-membered ring of the naphtho-thio-phene moiety is disordered, with the S and opposite non-fused C atom approximately exchanging positions, with a site-occupancy factors of 0.808 (3) and 0.187 (3).

Platinum-Catalyzed Reactions of 2,3-Bis(diisopropylsilyl)thiophene with Alkynes.

Project description:The reactions of 2,3-bis(diisopropylsilyl)thiophene (1) with diphenylacetylene, phenylacetylene, trimethylsilylacetylene, and mesitylacetylene have been reported. The reactions of 1 with diphenylacetylene and phenylacetylene in the presence of a catalytic amount of tetrakis(triphenylphosphine)platinum(0) at 80 °C gave [1,4]disilino[2,3-b]thiophene derivatives. With trimethylsilylacetylene, 1 afforded two types of products arising from sp-hybridized C-H bond activation of the acetylene, together with [1,3]disilolo[4,5-b]thiophene derivatives. A similar treatment of 1 with mesitylacetylene produced two regioisomers of products arising from the C-H bond activation of mesitylacetylene. Theoretical calculations for the intramolecular reactions of 10a and 10b are also discussed.
