Ring-opening hydrolysis of spiro-epoxyoxindoles using a reusable sulfonic acid functionalized nitrogen rich carbon catalyst.

ABSTRACT: Controlling the product selectivity of a ring-opening hydrolysis reaction remains a great challenge with mineral acids and to an extent with homogeneous catalysts. In addition, even trace amounts of metal impurities in a bioactive product hinder the reaction progress. This has necessitated the development of robust and metal-free catalysts to offer an alternative sustainable route. We report a nitrogen-rich sulfonated carbon as a catalyst derived from an inexpensive precursor for the synthesis of bioactive vicinal diols of spiro-oxindole derivatives. The well-characterized catalyst shows wide generality with different electronic and steric substituents in the substrates under mild reaction conditions. Hot filtration test confirms no leaching of the acid moiety and the catalyst could be reused for four cycles with retention of activities.

Ring-Opening Polymerization of 1,3-Benzoxazines via Borane Catalyst.

Project description:Tris(pentafluorophenyl)borane was used as Lewis acid catalyst to lower the ring opening polymerization temperature (ROP) of 1,3-benzoxazines. Dynamic scanning calorimeter studies revealed that on-set ROP temperatures were decreased as much as 98 °C for model benzoxazine compounds. Catalytic polymerization was traced by both FTIR and ¹H NMR, and revealed that tris(pentafluorophenyl)borane acted rapidly and fast curing achieved. Moreover, thermal properties of resulting polybenzoxazines were investigated by thermogravimetric analysis (TGA) and found out that the catalyst has high impact on char yield and even 3 mol % catalyst augmented char yields up to 13%.

Catechol End-Functionalized Polylactide by Organocatalyzed Ring-Opening Polymerization.

Project description:There is a great interest in incorporating catechol moieties into polymers in a controlled manner due to their interesting properties, such as the promotion of adhesion, redox activity or bioactivity. One possibility is to incorporate the catechol as end-group in a polymer chain using a functional initiator by means of controlled polymerization strategies. Nevertheless, the instability of catechol moieties under oxygen and basic pH requires tedious protection and deprotection steps to perform the polymerization in a controlled fashion. In the present work, we explore the organocatalyzed synthesis of catechol end-functional, semi-telechelic polylactide (PLLA) using non-protected dopamine, catechol molecule containing a primary amine, as initiator. NMR and SEC-IR results showed that in the presence of a weak organic base such as triethylamine, the ring-opening polymerization (ROP) of lactide takes place in a controlled manner without need of protecting the cathechol units. To further confirm the end-group fidelity the catechol containing PLLA was characterized by Cyclic Voltammetry and MALDI-TOF confirming the absence of side reaction during the polymerization. In order to exploit the potential of catechol moieties, catechol end-group of PLLA was oxidized to quinone and further reacted with aliphatic amines. In addition, we also confirmed the ability of catechol functionalized PLLA to reduce metal ions to metal nanoparticles to obtain well distributed silver nanoparticles. It is expected that this new route of preparing catechol-PLLA polymers without protection will increase the accessibility of catechol containing biodegradable polymers by ROP.

Organocatalyzed Photoredox Radical Ring-Opening Polymerization of Functionalized Vinylcyclopropanes.

Project description:Organocatalyzed photoredox radical ring-opening polymerization (rROP) of vinylcyclopropanes (VCPs) is employed for the synthesis of polymers with controlled molecular weight (MW), dispersity, and composition. Herein, we report the study on the rROP of a variety of VCP monomers bearing diverse functional groups (such as amide, alkene, ketal, urea, hemiaminal ether, and so on) under organocatalyzed conditions with varying light sources and temperature. Notably, VCP monomers bearing natural product functionality or their derivatives can be polymerized in a controlled manner to produce poly(VCPs) with predictable MW, low dispersity, tunable composition, high thermal stability, and tailored glass transition temperature (T g), ranging 39 to 107 °C. Lastly, successful "grafting through" synthesis of molecular brush copolymers containing 1.0 or 5.0 kDa polydimethylsiloxane (PDMS) side chains from readily accessible EtVCP-PDMS macromonomers further demonstrates the robustness of this organocatalyzed photoredox rROP.

Periodic Mesoporous Organosilica Functionalized with Sulfonic Acid Groups as Acid Catalyst for Glycerol Acetylation.

Project description:A Periodic Mesoporous Organosilica (PMO) functionalized with sulfonic acid groups has been successfully synthesized via a sequence of post-synthetic modification steps of a trans-ethenylene bridged PMO material. The double bond is functionalized via a bromination and subsequent substitution obtaining a thiol functionality. This is followed by an oxidation towards a sulfonic acid group. After full characterization, the solid acid catalyst is used in the acetylation of glycerol. The catalytic reactivity and reusability of the sulfonic acid modified PMO material is investigated. The catalyst showed a catalytic activity and kinetics that are comparable with the commercially available resin, Amberlyst-15, and furthermore our catalyst can be recycled for several subsequent catalytic runs and retains its catalytic activity.

Ring-opening cyclization of activated spiro-aziridine oxindoles with heteroarenes: a facile synthetic approach to spiro-oxindole-fused pyrroloindolines.

Project description:Herein, we report a facile tandem approach for the synthesis of both spiro-oxindole-fused pyrroloindolines and benzofurano-pyrrolidines via a Lewis acid-catalyzed domino ring-opening with concomitant ring annulation using activated spiro-aziridines and heteroarenes. This method offers a new class of novel spiro-fused polycyclic pyrrolidines in a one-pot and sustainable manner with good yields and high diastereoselectivity. In addition, the structure of 3d was confirmed by single X-ray crystallography analysis.

Glycol-functionalized ionic liquids for high-temperature enzymatic ring-opening polymerization.

Project description:Enzymatic ring-opening polymerization (ROP) is a benign method for preparing polyesters, such as polylactides and other polylactones. These reactions are typically carried out at relatively high temperatures (60-130 °C), however, there is a deficiency of enzyme-compatible solvents for such thermally-demanding biocatalytic processes. In this study, we have prepared a series of short-chained glycol-grafted ionic liquids (ILs) based on a phosphonium, imidazolium, pyridinium, ammonium, or piperidinium cationic headgroup. Most of these glycol-grafted ILs exhibit relatively low dynamic viscosities (33-123 mPa s at 30 °C), coupled with excellent short-term thermal stabilities with decomposition temperatures (T dcp) in the 318-403 °C range. Significantly, the long-term thermal stability under conditions matching those for enzymatic ROP synthesis (130 °C for 7 days) is excellent for several of these task-specific ILs. Using Novozym 435-catalyzed ROP, these ILs are demonstrated to be viable solvents for the enzymatic production of reasonable yields (30-48%) of high molecular mass (M w ∼20 kDa) poly(l-lactide) and poly(ε-caprolactone) compared to solventless conditions (12-14 kDa).

Direct Hydroxymethylation of Furaldehydes with Aqueous Formaldehyde over a Reusable Sulfuric Functionalized Resin Catalyst.

Project description:Transformation of C5 furaldehydes to the corresponding C6 furaldehydes over a heterogeneous catalyst is a versatile but demanding reaction process. This report describes our discovery that Amberlyst-15, a conventional sulfuric functionalized resin, affords a 43.1% yield for 5-hydroxymethyl-2-furaldehyde (HMF) production with 57.5% selectivity via direct hydroxymethylation of 2-furaldehyde (furfural) with an aqueous formaldehyde reagent. This report is the first to describe an important achievement on the heterogeneous acid catalyst-assisted HMF production from furfural via direct hydroxymethylation in a batch reactor system. The Amberlyst-15 was also reusable and applicable for C5 furaldehyde upgrading of various types: furfuryl alcohol, furfurylamine, and furoic acid toward the corresponding C6 furaldehydes. Results show that a liquid flow system becomes an advanced tool for the continuous production of upgrading furaldehydes through a fixed Amberlyst-15 catalyst bed. Accordingly, the sulfuric functionalized resin-catalyzed direct hydroxymethylation of furaldehydes with aqueous formaldehyde in both batch and flow reactor systems is worthwhile and opens up new avenues for biomass transformations in particles, an important area of inedible biomass utilization.

Cobalt Catalyst Determines Regioselectivity in Ring Opening of Epoxides with Aryl Halides.

Project description:Ring-opening of epoxides furnishing either linear or branched products belongs to the group of classic transformations in organic synthesis. However, the regioselective cross-electrophile coupling of aryl epoxides with aryl halides still represents a key challenge. Herein, we report that the vitamin B12/Ni dual-catalytic system allows for the selective synthesis of linear products under blue-light irradiation, thus complementing methodologies that give access to branched alcohols. Experimental and theoretical studies corroborate the proposed mechanism involving alkylcobalamin as an intermediate in this reaction.

Snapshot of cyclooctyne ring-opening to a tethered alkylidene cyclic polymer catalyst.

Project description:Cyclooctyne reacts with the trianionic pincer ligand supported alkylidyne [ t BuOCO]WCC(CH3)3(THF)2 (1) to yield tungstacyclopropene (3) and tungstacyclopentadiene (4) complexes. The ratio of 3 and 4 in the reaction mixture depends on the stoichiometry of the reaction. The maximum concentration of 3 occurs with one equiv. of cyclooctyne and 4 is the exclusive product of the reaction above three equivalents. Both complexes 3 and 4 convert to the cyclooctyne ring-opened product 5 upon heating. While the conversion of 4 to 5 is accompanied by formation of polycyclooctyne as a white precipitate during the reaction, conversion of 3 to 5 is homogeneous. Exhibiting Ring Expansion Polymerization (REP), complexes 4 and 5 initiate the polymerization of phenylacetylene to generate cyclic poly(phenylacetylene) (c-PPA).

Functionalized Biodegradable Polymers via Termination of Ring-Opening Polymerization by Acyl Chlorides.

Project description:Aliphatic polyesters are an important class of polymeric materials for biomedical applications due to their versatile and tunable chemistry, biocompatibility and biodegradability. A capability of direct bonding with biomedically significant molecules, provided by the presence of the reactive end functional groups (FGs), is highly desirable for prospective polymers. Among FGs, N-hydroxysuccinimidyl activated ester group (NHS) and maleimide fragment (MI) provide efficient covalent bonding with -NH- and -SH containing compounds. In our study, we found that NHS- and MI-derived acyl chlorides efficiently terminate living ring-opening polymerization of ε-caprolactone, L-lactide, ethyl ethylene phosphonate and ethyl ethylene phosphate, catalyzed by 2,6-di-tert-butyl-4-methylphenoxy magnesium complex, with a formation of NHS- and MI-functionalized polymers at a high yields. Reactivity of these polymers towards amine- and thiol-containing model substrates in organic and aqueous media was also studied.
