Proteasomes are responsible for intracellular proteolysis and play an important role in cellular protein homeostasis. Cells of the immune system assemble a specialized form of proteasomes, known as immunoproteasomes, in which the constitutive catalytic sites are replaced for cytokine-inducible homologues.
