Autonomous UAV System for Cleaning Insulators in Power Line Inspection and Maintenance.

ABSTRACT: The inspection and maintenance tasks of electrical installations are very demanding. Nowadays, insulator cleaning is carried out manually by operators using scaffolds, ropes, or even helicopters. However, these operations involve potential risks for humans and the electrical structure. The use of Unmanned Aerial Vehicles (UAV) to reduce the risk of these tasks is rising. This paper presents an UAV to autonomously clean insulators on power lines. First, an insulator detection and tracking algorithm has been implemented to control the UAV in operation. Second, a cleaning tool has been designed consisting of a pump, a tank, and an arm to direct the flow of cleaning liquid. Third, a vision system has been developed that is capable of detecting soiled areas using a semantic segmentation neuronal network, calculating the trajectory for cleaning in the image plane, and generating arm trajectories to efficiently clean the insulator. Fourth, an autonomous system has been developed to land on a charging pad to charge the batteries and potentially fill the tank with cleaning liquid. Finally, the autonomous system has been validated in a controlled outdoor environment.

Project description:The aim of this study is to design an adaptive controller for the hard contact interaction problem of underwater vehicle-manipulator systems (UVMS) to realize asset inspection through physical interaction. The proposed approach consists of a force and position controller in the operational space of the end effector of the robot manipulator mounted on an underwater vehicle. The force tracking algorithm keeps the end effector perpendicular to the unknown surface of the asset and the position tracking algorithm makes it follow a desired trajectory on the surface. The challenging problem in such a system is to maintain the end effector of the manipulator in continuous and stable contact with the unknown surface in the presence of disturbances and reaction forces that constantly move the floating robot base in an unexpected manner. The main contribution of the proposed controller is the development of the adaptive force tracking control algorithm based on switching actions between contact and noncontact states. When the end effector loses contact with the surface, a velocity feed-forward augmented impedance controller is activated to rapidly regain contact interaction by generating a desired position profile whose speed is adjusted depending on the time and the point where the contact was lost. Once the contact interaction is reestablished, a dynamic adaptive damping-based admittance controller is operated for fast adaptation and continuous stable force tracking. To validate the proposed controller, we conducted experiments with a land robotic setup composed of a 6 degrees of freedom (DOF) Stewart Platform imitating an underwater vehicle and a 7 DOF KUKA IIWA robotic arm imitating the underwater robot manipulator attached to the vehicle. The proposed scheme significantly increases the contact time under realistic disturbances, in comparison to our former controllers without an adaptive control scheme. We have demonstrated the superior performance of the current controller with experiments and quantified measures.

Project description:Industry 4.0 has paved the way for a world where smart factories will automate and upgrade many processes through the use of some of the latest emerging technologies. One of such technologies is Unmanned Aerial Vehicles (UAVs), which have evolved a great deal in the last years in terms of technology (e.g., control units, sensors, UAV frames) and have significantlyr educed their cost. UAVs can help industry in automatable and tedious tasks, like the ones performed on a regular basis for determining the inventory and for preserving item traceability. In such tasks, especially when it comes from untrusted third parties, it is essential to determine whether the collected information is valid or true. Likewise, ensuring data trustworthiness is a key issue in order to leverage Big Data analytics to supply chain efficiency and effectiveness. In such a case, blockchain, another Industry 4.0 technology that has become very popular in other fields like finance, has the potential to provide a higher level of transparency, security, trust and efficiency in the supply chain and enable the use of smart contracts. Thus, in this paper, we present the design and evaluation of a UAV-based system aimed at automating inventory tasks and keeping the traceability of industrial items attached to Radio-Frequency IDentification (RFID) tags. To confront current shortcomings, such a system is developed under a versatile, modular and scalable architecture aimed to reinforce cyber security and decentralization while fostering external audits and big data analytics. Therefore, the system uses a blockchain and a distributed ledger to store certain inventory data collected by UAVs, validate them, ensure their trustworthiness and make them available to the interested parties. In order to show the performance of the proposed system, different tests were performed in a real industrial warehouse, concluding that the system is able to obtain the inventory data really fast in comparison to traditional manual tasks, while being also able to estimate the position of the items when hovering over them thanks to their tag's signal strength. In addition, the performance of the proposed blockchain-based architecture was evaluated in different scenarios.
