Two new species of Rubus L. (Rosaceae) from the western Andes of Ecuador.

ABSTRACT: Two new species of Rubus (Rosaceae) from the western Andes of northern Ecuador are described. Rubuslongistipularis D.A. Espinel-Ortiz & Romol. is a scandent or climbing shrub found in the mountain forests of Chocó Andino from northern Ecuador. Rubusmaquipucunensis D.A. Espinel-Ortiz & Romol. is a vine or climbing shrub found in the rainforests of Chocó Andino from Pichincha and Santo Domingo de los Tsáchilas. The species mentioned here are morphologically differentiated from all the Rubus species from Ecuador with a detailed botanical description, illustrations and photographs. We also report, for the first time, possible hybridisation between R.longistipularis and R.boliviensis Focke, as the samples reviewed showed mixed characteristics from both species.

Project description:We describe two new species of glassfrogs of the genus Centrolene living in syntopy at La Enramada, province of Azuay, southwestern Ecuador. They were found in a small creek in montane evergreen forests at 2,900 m elevation. The first new species is distinguished from all other members of the genus Centrolene by having the following combination of characters: dentigerous process of vomer absent; sloping snout in lateral view; thick, white labial stripe and a faint white line between the lip and anterior ¼ of body; humeral spine in adult males; parietal peritoneum covered by iridophores, visceral peritonea translucent (except pericardium); ulnar and tarsal ornamentation; dorsal skin shagreen with dispersed warts; uniform green dorsum with light yellowish green warts; and green bones. The new species is remarkable by being sister to a species from the opposite Andean versant, C. condor. The second new species is distinguished from all other Centrolene by having the following combination of characters: dentigerous process of vomer absent; round snout in lateral view; thin, yellowish labial stripe with a row of white tubercles between the lip and arm insertion, and a yellowish line between arm insertion and groin; uniform green dorsum; humeral spine in adult males; parietal peritoneum covered by iridophores, visceral peritonea translucent (except pericardium); dorsal skin shagreen with dispersed spicules; ulnar and tarsal ornamentation; and green bones. The second new species is sister to C. sabini and an undescribed species of Centrolene from southeastern Ecuador. Based on nuclear and mitochondrial DNA sequences, we present a new phylogeny for Centrolene and comment on the phylogenetic relationships inside the genus.

Glossolomawiehleri (Gesneriaceae), a new species from the northwestern Andes of Ecuador.

Project description:A new species of Glossoloma is described from the western Andean slopes of the Pichincha Province in northern Ecuador. Glossolomawiehleri J.L.Clark & Tobar is differentiated from all other congeners by an epiphytic habit, elongate scandent shoots that exceed four meters in length, and coriaceous leaves with a velutinous indument on the lower leaf surface. The new species is illustrated, featured with field images from recent expeditions, and assigned the category of Endangered (EN) according to IUCN Criteria.

Phylogeny of the Diploid Species of Rubus (Rosaceae).

Project description:Rubus L. (Rosaceae, Rosoideae) contains around 700 species distributed on all continents except Antarctica, with the highest species diversity in temperate to subtropical regions of the northern hemisphere. The taxonomy of Rubus is challenging due to the frequency of polyploidy, hybridization and apomixis. Previous studies mostly sampled sparsely and used limited DNA sequence data. The evolutionary relationships between infrageneric taxa, therefore, remain to be further clarified. In the present study, genotyping by sequencing (GBS) reduced-representation genome sequencing data from 186 accessions representing 65 species, 1 subspecies and 17 varieties of Rubus, with emphasis on diploid species, were used to infer a phylogeny using maximum likelihood and maximum parsimony methods. The major results were as follows: (1) we confirmed or reconfirmed the polyphyly or paraphyly of some traditionally circumscribed subgenera, sections and subsections; (2) 19 well-supported clades, which differed from one another on molecular, morphological and geographical grounds, were identified for the species sampled; (3) characteristics such as plants with dense bristles or not, leaves leathery or papyraceous, number of carpels, instead of inflorescences paniculate or not, aggregate fruits and leaves abaxially tomentose or not, may be of some use in classifying taxa whose drupelets are united into a thimble-shaped aggregate fruit that falls in its entirety from the dry receptacle; and (4) a preliminary classification scheme of diploid species of Rubus is proposed based on our results combined with those from previous phylogenetic analyses.

Two new species of Chlorospatha section Orientales (Araceae) from western Andes in Colombia.

Project description:Two new species of Chlorospatha (section Orientales) from the western slope of the Cordillera Occidental in the departments of Valle del Cauca and Choco (Colombia) are described here. The new species represent the first records of section Orientales for Colombia, which was previously known only from the eastern Andes in Ecuador. The two new species are similar to C. longipoda, C. hannoniae and C. boosii. Chlorospatha minima sp. nov. is differentiated by its small overall size (less than 30 cm tall), blade strongly inequilateral with smooth adaxial surface, and spadix less than 2.2 cm long. Chlorospatha silverstonei sp. nov. is differentiated by its large overall size (30-60 cm tall), 1-3 leaves per plant, and quilted adaxial blade surface.

New species of the endemic Neotropical caddisfly genus Contulma from the Andes of Ecuador (Trichoptera: Anomalopsychidae).

Project description:The genus Contulma Flint (Trichoptera: Anomalopsychidae) is composed mostly of regionally endemic species occurring above 2,000 m, with a few more widespread species and some that are found at lower elevations. Adults of three new species of Contulma are described and illustrated from the Andes of Ecuador, Contulma lina, new species, Contulma quito, new species, and Contulma sangay, new species. These species are similar to previously described species from the region, including C. paluguillensis, C. nevada, and C. lancelolata. New provincial records are provided for C. bacula, C. cataracta, and C. echinata. Contulma duffi Oláh, 2016 is considered a junior, subjective synonym of C. penai, Holzenthal & Flint, 1995. Also, we provide an identification key to males of the 30 Contulma species now known.

A new species of Hyalella from the High Andes of Ecuador (Crustacea, Amphipoda, Hyalellidae).

Project description:Hyalella cajasisp. n. is described from high altitude shallow water lakes in southern Ecuador. This is the second representative of the genus recorded in the country after H. meinerti. The new species shares with nine South American species of the genus the display of a smooth, non-processiferous body, a male first uropod with a modified curved robust seta on the endopod, and six pairs of sternal gills. The new taxon can be distinguished from these species based on the presence/absence of eyes; relative length of antenna 1 with respect to antenna 2; presence/absence of short pointed robust seta distally on palp of maxilla 1; number of pappose setae proximally on medial margin of inner lobe of maxilla 2; elongation and curvature of the modified robust seta of endopod of male uropod 1; relative length of ramus of uropod 3 with respect to protopod; and armature and outline of telson, among other features. It seems to be a high-altitude endemic to the Cajas Massif in Azuay Province, being replaced in the same area at lower altitudes by H. meinerti.

New species and a new genus of Philopotamidae from the Andes of Bolivia and Ecuador (Insecta, Trichoptera).

Project description:A new genus and species of Philopotamidae (Philopotaminae), Aymaradellaboliviana, is described from the Bolivian Andes of South America. The new genus differs from other Philopotaminae by the loss of 2A vein in the hind wing and, in the male genitalia, the synscleritous tergum and sternum of segment VIII, and the elongate sclerotized dorsal processes of segment VIII. The first record of Hydrobiosella (Philopotaminae) in the New World is also provided with a new species from the Andes of Ecuador, Hydrobiosellaandina. In addition, a new species of the Neotropical genus Chimarrhodella (Chimarrinae), Chimarrhodellachoco, is described from the Choco-Andean region of Ecuador, and Chimarrhodellaperuviana (Ross) is recorded from Ecuador for the first time. Lastly, Wormaldiaimbrialis (Philopotaminae), new species, is described, also from the Ecuadorian Choco.

Five new species of Drosophilaguarani group from the Andes of southern Ecuador (Diptera, Drosophilidae).

Project description:Five species of the genus Drosophila are described and illustrated: D.zamorana sp. n., D.quinarensis sp. n., D.sachapuyu sp. n., D.caxarumi sp. n., and D.misi sp. n. from the cloud forests of the Podocarpus National Park, in the southern Ecuadorian Andes. Flies were captured using plastic bottles containing pieces of fermented banana with yeast. All the species were found to belong to the Drosophilaguarani species-group.

Two new species of Dendrophthora (Viscaceae) from the Venezuelan Andes.

Project description:Two new species of Dendrophthora Eichler (Viscaceae) from northwestern Venezuela are described and illustrated. Both mistletoes, D. apiculata Canelón et al., sp. nov. and D. coronata Canelón et al., sp. nov., are confined to subpáramo and páramo ecosystems of the Venezuelan Andes and are, at present, only known from Guaramacal National Park (Portuguesa and Trujillo states). Ecological aspects and possible taxonomic affinities are discussed. A distribution map also is presented.
