Implementing Contact Angle Hysteresis in Moving Mesh-Based Two-Phase Flow Numerical Simulations.

ABSTRACT: Contact angle hysteresis is a common phenomenon in nature, which also plays an important role in industrial applications. A numerical model based on the moving mesh two-phase flow method is presented for modeling contact angle hysteresis. The implementation includes a displacement-based penalty method and a state variable method. The pinning, moving, and repinning of the contact lines can be simulated. This method is robust considering both two-dimensional and three-dimensional geometries. To further demonstrate the performance of this method, a fluid-solid interaction model with a cylinder fluctuating on a water surface considering contact angle hysteresis is demonstrated.

Theoretical Analysis of Contact Angle and Contact Angle Hysteresis of Wenzel Drops on Superhydrophobic Surfaces.

Project description:Although understanding the wetting behavior of solid surfaces is crucial for numerous engineering applications, the mechanisms driving the motion of Wenzel drops on rough surfaces remain incompletely clarified. In this study, the contact angle and contact angle hysteresis of Wenzel drops on superhydrophobic surfaces are investigated from a thermodynamic perspective. The free energy of the system is theoretically analyzed, thereby determining the equilibrium contact angle. Based on the sessile drop method, the relationship between the free energy barrier and the drop volume is calculated quantitatively, enabling the determination of advancing and receding contact angles under zero free energy barrier conditions. The theoretical calculations agree well with the experimental data. These findings enhance the understanding of the interfacial interactions between Wenzel drops and superhydrophobic surfaces.

Lattice Boltzmann Modeling of Drying of Porous Media Considering Contact Angle Hysteresis.

Project description:Drying of porous media is governed by a combination of evaporation and movement of the liquid phase within the porous structure. Contact angle hysteresis induced by surface roughness is shown to influence multi-phase flows, such as contact line motion of droplet, phase distribution during drainage and coffee ring formed after droplet drying in constant contact radius mode. However, the influence of contact angle hysteresis on liquid drying in porous media is still an unanswered question. Lattice Boltzmann model (LBM) is an advanced numerical approach increasingly used to study phase change problems including drying. In this paper, based on a geometric formulation scheme to prescribe contact angle, we implement a contact angle hysteresis model within the framework of a two-phase pseudopotential LBM. The capability and accuracy of prescribing and automatically measuring contact angles over a large range are tested and validated by simulating droplets sitting on flat and curved surfaces. Afterward, the proposed contact angle hysteresis model is validated by modeling droplet drying on flat and curved surfaces. Then, drying of two connected capillary tubes is studied, considering the influence of different contact angle hysteresis ranges on drying dynamics. Finally, the model is applied to study drying of a dual-porosity porous medium, where phase distribution and drying rate are compared with and without contact angle hysteresis. The proposed model is shown to be capable of dealing with different contact angle hysteresis ranges accurately and of capturing the physical mechanisms during drying in different porous media including flat and curved geometries.Supplementary informationThe online version contains supplementary material available at 10.1007/s11242-021-01644-9.

Efficient supersonic flow simulations using lattice Boltzmann methods based on numerical equilibria.

Project description:A double-distribution-function based lattice Boltzmann method (DDF-LBM) is proposed for the simulation of polyatomic gases in the supersonic regime. The model relies on a numerical equilibrium that has been extensively used by discrete velocity methods since the late 1990s. Here, it is extended to reproduce an arbitrary number of moments of the Maxwell-Boltzmann distribution. These extensions to the standard 5-constraint (mass, momentum and energy) approach lead to the correct simulation of thermal, compressible flows with only 39 discrete velocities in 3D. The stability of this BGK-LBM is reinforced by relying on Knudsen-number-dependent relaxation times that are computed analytically. Hence, high Reynolds-number, supersonic flows can be simulated in an efficient and elegant manner. While the 1D Riemann problem shows the ability of the proposed approach to handle discontinuities in the zero-viscosity limit, the simulation of the supersonic flow past a NACA0012 aerofoil confirms the excellent behaviour of this model in a low-viscosity and supersonic regime. The flow past a sphere is further simulated to investigate the 3D behaviour of our model in the low-viscosity supersonic regime. The proposed model is shown to be substantially more efficient than the previous 5-moment D3Q343 DDF-LBM for both CPU and GPU architectures. It then opens up a whole new world of compressible flow applications that can be realistically tackled with a purely LB approach. Numerical simulations of drumlin formation.

Project description:We summarize the present form of the instability theory for drumlin formation, which describes the coupled subglacial flow of ice, water and sediment. This model has evolved over the last 20 years, and is now at the point where it can predict instabilities corresponding to ribbed moraine, drumlins and mega-scale glacial lineations, but efforts to provide numerical solutions of the model have been limited. The present summary adds some slight nuances to previously published versions of the theory, notably concerning the constitutive description of the subglacial water film and its flow. A new numerical method is devised to solve the model, and we show that it can be solved for realistic values of most of the parameters, with the exception of that corresponding to the water film thickness. We show that evolved bedforms can be three-dimensional and of the correct sizes, and we explore to some extent the variation of the solutions with the model's parameters.

Characterizing the correlations between local phase fractions of gas-liquid two-phase flow with wire-mesh sensor.

Project description:Understanding of flow patterns and their transitions is significant to uncover the flow mechanics of two-phase flow. The local phase distribution and its fluctuations contain rich information regarding the flow structures. A wire-mesh sensor (WMS) was used to study the local phase fluctuations of horizontal gas-liquid two-phase flow, which was verified through comparing the reconstructed three-dimensional flow structure with photographs taken during the experiments. Each crossing point of the WMS is treated as a node, so the measurement on each node is the phase fraction in this local area. An undirected and unweighted flow pattern network was established based on connections that are formed by cross-correlating the time series of each node under different flow patterns. The structure of the flow pattern network reveals the relationship of the phase fluctuations at each node during flow pattern transition, which is then quantified by introducing the topological index of the complex network. The proposed analysis method using the WMS not only provides three-dimensional visualizations of the gas-liquid two-phase flow, but is also a thorough analysis for the structure of flow patterns and the characteristics of flow pattern transition. Hemodynamic numerical simulations of the disturbance due to intracoronary flow measurements by a Doppler guide wire.

Project description:BackgroundSince hemodynamics plays a key role in the development and evolution of cardiovascular pathologies, physician's decision must be based on proper monitoring of relevant physiological flow quantities.MethodsA numerical analysis of the error introduced by an intravascular Doppler guide wire on the peak velocity measurements has been carried out. The effect of probe misalignment (±10°) with respect to the vessel axis was investigated. Numerical simulations were performed on a realistic 3D geometry, reconstructed from coronary angiography images. Furthermore, instead of using Poiseuille or Womersley approximations, the unsteady pulsatile inlet boundary condition has been calculated from experimental peak-velocity measurements inside the vessel through a new approach based on an iterative Newton's algorithm.ResultsThe results show that the presence of the guide modifies significantly both the maximum velocity and the peak position in the section plane; the difference is between 6 and 17 % of the maximum measured velocity depending on the distance from the probe tip and the instantaneous vessel flow rate. Furthermore, a misalignment of the probe may lead to a wrong estimation of the peak velocity with an error up to 10 % depending on the probe orientation angle.ConclusionsThe Doppler probe does affect the maximum velocity and its position during intravascular Doppler measurements. Moreover, the Doppler-probe-wire sampling volume at 5.2 and 10 mm far from the probe tip is not sufficient to prevent its influence on the measurement. This should be taken into account in clinical practice by physicians during intravascular Doppler quantification. The new numerical approach used in this work could potentially be helpful in future numerical simulations to set plausible inlet boundary conditions.

Adaptive moving mesh algorithm based on local reaction rate.

Project description:An empirical mesh adaption algorithm is introduced for modeling one-dimensional reaction-diffusion systems with large moving gradients. Our new algorithm is based on the revelation, that in reaction-diffusion systems the high moving concentration gradients appear nearby to the region where the rate of reaction is maximal, thus the local reaction rate can be used to control the mesh adaption. We found, that the main advantage of such a method is its simplicity and easy implementation. As an example we study an acid-base diode, where large moving gradients appear. The mathematical model of the diode contains several parabolic PDEs, coupled with one elliptic PDE. An r-refinement technique is used and attached to the commercial finite element solver COMSOL. We investigated the time-dependent salt effects of the diode with our developed algorithm. Our mesh adaption method is advantageous for modeling of any reaction-diffusion systems with localized high concentration gradients.

Lava flow hazards at Mount Etna: constraints imposed by eruptive history and numerical simulations.

Project description:Improving lava flow hazard assessment is one of the most important and challenging fields of volcanology, and has an immediate and practical impact on society. Here, we present a methodology for the quantitative assessment of lava flow hazards based on a combination of field data, numerical simulations and probability analyses. With the extensive data available on historic eruptions of Mt. Etna, going back over 2000 years, it has been possible to construct two hazard maps, one for flank and the other for summit eruptions, allowing a quantitative analysis of the most likely future courses of lava flows. The effective use of hazard maps of Etna may help in minimizing the damage from volcanic eruptions through correct land use in densely urbanized area with a population of almost one million people. Although this study was conducted on Mt. Etna, the approach used is designed to be applicable to other volcanic areas.

Ionic Origin of Electro-osmotic Flow Hysteresis.

Project description:Electro-osmotic flow, the driving of fluid at nano- or micro-scales with electric field, has found numerous applications, ranging from pumping to chemical and biomedical analyses in micro-devices. Electro-osmotic flow exhibits a puzzling hysteretic behavior when two fluids with different concentrations displace one another. The flow rate is faster when a higher concentration solution displaces a lower concentration one as compared to the flow in the reverse direction. Although electro-osmotic flow is a surface phenomenon, rather counter intuitively we demonstrate that electro-osmotic flow hysteresis originates from the accumulation or depletion of pH-governing minority ions in the bulk of the fluid, due to the imbalance of electric-field-induced ion flux. The pH and flow velocity are changed, depending on the flow direction. The understanding of electro-osmotic flow hysteresis is critical for accurate fluid flow control in microfluidic devices, and maintaining of constant pH in chemical and biological systems under an electric field.

Dynamic contact angles and hysteresis under electrowetting-on-dielectric.

Project description:By designing and implementing a new experimental method, we have measured the dynamic advancing and receding contact angles and the resulting hysteresis of droplets under electrowetting-on-dielectric (EWOD). Measurements were obtained over wide ranges of applied EWOD voltages, or electrowetting numbers (0 ≤ Ew ≤ 0.9), and droplet sliding speeds, or capillary numbers (1.4 × 10(-5) ≤ Ca ≤ 6.9 × 10(-3)). If Ew or Ca is low, dynamic contact angle hysteresis is not affected much by the EWOD voltage or the sliding speed; that is, the hysteresis increases by less than 50% with a 2 order-of-magnitude increase in sliding speed when Ca < 10(-3). If both Ew and Ca are high, however, the hysteresis increases with either the EWOD voltage or the sliding speed. Stick-slip oscillations were observed at Ew > 0.4. Data are interpreted with simplified hydrodynamic (Cox-Voinov) and molecular-kinetic theory (MKT) models; the Cox-Voinov model captures the trend of the data, but it yields unreasonable fitting parameters. MKT fitting parameters associated with the advancing contact line are reasonable, but a lack of symmetry indicates that a more intricate model is required.
