ABSTRACT: The dataset revolves around the laboratory testing of an innovative additive technology for possible stabilization of unbound courses in road pavements. The product is a synthetic fluid based on isoalkane and tall oil pitch. Two test types are performed. Repeated load triaxial tests evaluate the elastic stiffness and the deformation properties of both untreated and treated aggregates. Moreover, some specimens are also tested before and after being subjected to freezing-thawing actions. A modified version of the rolling bottle test appraises the integrity with stripping loss on loose aggregates covered by the additive. Considering the necessity for road maintenance and rehabilitation worldwide, experimental data dealing with the stabilization potential of an innovative synthetic fluid stabilizer can be relevant for several road stakeholders.

Project description:The collected dataset derives from the laboratory testing of bentonite clay investigated as a stabilization technology for the unbound layers of road pavements. The effect of two kinds of bentonite (calcium based and sodium based) are assessed on two aggregate types commonly used as road construction materials. The investigation program, performed by means of repeated load triaxial tests, encompasses the different combinations of bentonite and aggregate types; two replicate specimens are tested dried for each condition. Considering the global need for ensuring well-performing road infrastructures while employing environmentally sound construction technologies, this dataset documenting the potential of bentonite clays used as road stabilizers can be of interest for several road stakeholders.

Brief Dataset on produced handsheet from oil palm residue lignocellulose treated with <i>Bacillus cereus</i> on mechanical and physical characterization.

Project description:This article presents experimental data on oil palm biomass (oil palm leaves, oil palm trunk and empty fruit bunch) handsheet production characterization by biodelignification treatment using Bacillus cereus extracted from termite gut (Coptotermus curvignathus). It associates the lignocellulose chemical composition obtained via technical association pulp and paper industry TAPPI T 222 om-02 testing on lignin content reduction determination, holocellulose and hemicellulose content determination (Kurscher-Hoffner method). Several data obtained for handsheet characterization presents brightness, opacity, contrast ratio, din transparency, thickness, bursting and tearing indexes are collected. Handsheet surface morphology was also observed on ratio of gaps differences between fiber bonding conducted using scanning electron microscope (SEM) and ImageJ software. The raw data findings supplement chemical composition analysis for both untreated and treated substrates on handsheet quality performance check as presented in the research article "Bio-Mechanical Pulping of Bacteria Pre-Treatment on Oil Palm Biomass for Handsheet Production" [1]. For understanding correlations into the difference among lignocellulose content composition which affect the handsheet formation and mechanical strength refer to article from this research [1]. This dataset is made publicly available for optimizing alternative waste material reuse in the pulp and paper industrial section.

Dataset of three-dimensional traces of roads.

Project description:We present a dataset consisting of three-dimensional traces, captured by Global Navigation Satellite System techniques with three-dimensional coordinates. It offers 138 traces (69 going and 69 returning), in addition to the actual mean axis of the road determined by precise surveying techniques to be used as ground truth for research activities. These data may serve as a test bed for research on data mining applications related to Global Navigation Satellite System multitraces, particularly the development and testing of algorithms intended for mining mean axis data from road multitraces. The data are suitable for the statistical analysis of both single-trace and multitrace datasets (e.g., outliers and biases).

Dataset on modelling a synthetic oil rim reservoirs for optimizing oil production during gas cap blow down strategy.

Project description:Oil rim reservoirs with very large gas caps, strong aquifers, and pay thickness below 30 ft. pose oil production challenges to operators. With best operational practices, very high gas oil ratios are recorded at the initial onset of oil production, thus such reservoirs are subjected to a gas cap blow down leading to an ultimate loss in oil reserves. This loss is attributed to a rapid and drastic drop in pressure over the productive life of the reservoir. To maximize oil production, a simulation study is focused on initiating oil wells at different time intervals and estimating oil recoveries at these points. It is believed that the gas cap would have been blown down in time to accommodate for substantial oil production. This study presents the reservoir data (from the Niger-Delta) that can be incorporated in a black oil reservoir simulator (Eclipse) coupled with best production and optimization strategies (water and gas injection) for maximum oil production during gas cap blow down. The data presented will provide a detailed process developing an oil rim synthetic model, support and enhance further studies in optimizing oil production in oil rims subjected to gas cap blow down, create a template for secondary and enhanced oil recovery processes.

Passive water ascent in a tall, scalable synthetic tree.

Project description:The transpiration cycle in trees is powered by a negative water potential generated within the leaves, which pumps water up a dense array of xylem conduits. Synthetic trees can mimic this transpiration cycle, but have been confined to pumping water across a single microcapillary or microfluidic channels. Here, we fabricated tall synthetic trees where water ascends up an array of large diameter conduits, to enable transpiration at the same macroscopic scale as natural trees. An array of 19 tubes of millimetric diameter were embedded inside of a nanoporous ceramic disk on one end, while their free end was submerged in a water reservoir. After saturating the synthetic tree by boiling it underwater, water can flow continuously up the tubes even when the ceramic disk was elevated over 3 m above the reservoir. A theory is developed to reveal two distinct modes of transpiration: an evaporation-limited regime and a flow-limited regime.

Visual pollution real images benchmark dataset on the public roads.

Project description:The term quality of life (QoL) refers to a wide range of multifaceted concepts that often involve subjective assessments of both positive and negative aspects of life. It is difficult to quantify QoL as the word has varied meanings in different academic areas and may have different connotations in different circumstances. The five sectors most commonly associated with QoL, however, are Health, Education, Environmental Quality, Personal Security, Civic Engagement, and Work-Life Balance. An emerging issue that falls under environmental quality is visual pollution (VP) which, as detailed in this study, refers to disruptive presences that limit visual ability in public roads with an emphasis on excavation barriers, potholes, and dilapidated sidewalks. Quantifying VP has always been difficult due to its subjective nature and lack of a consistent set of rules for systematic assessment of visual pollution. This emphasizes the need for research and module development that will allow government agencies to automatically predict and detect VP. Our dataset was collected from different regions in the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia (KSA) via the Ministry of Municipal and Rural Affairs and Housing (MOMRAH) as a part of a VP campaign to improve Saudi Arabia's urban landscape. It consists of 34,460 RGB images separated into three distinct classes: excavation barriers, potholes, and dilapidated sidewalks. To annotate all images for detection (i.e., bounding box) and classification (i.e., classification label) tasks, the deep active learning strategy (DAL) is used where an initial 1,200 VP images (i.e., 400 images per class) are manually annotated by four experts. Images with more than one object increase the number of training object ROIs which are recorded to be 8,417 for excavation barriers, 25,975 for potholes, and 7,412 for dilapidated sidewalks. The MOMRAH dataset is publicly published to enrich the research domain with the new VP image dataset.

Synthetic image dataset of shaft junctions inside wind turbines in presence or absence of oil leaks.

Project description:This paper presents a dataset of images generated via 3D graphics rendering. The dataset is composed by pictures of the junction between the high-speed shaft and the external bracket of the power generator inside a wind turbine cabin, in presence and absence of oil leaks. Oil leak occurrence is an anomaly that can verify in a zone of interest of the junction. Since the wind turbines industry is becoming more and more important, turbines maintenance is growing in importance accordingly. In this context a dataset, as we propose, can be used, for example, to design machine learning algorithms for predictive maintenance. The renderings have been produced, from various framings and various leaks shapes and colors, using the rendering engine Keyshot9. Subsequent preprocessing has been performed with Matlab, including images grayscale conversion and image binarization. Finally, data augmentation has been implemented in Python, and it can be easily extended/customized for realizing any further processing. The Matlab and Python source codes are also provided. To the authors' knowledge, there are no other public available datasets on this topic.

Creating a dataset of historic roads in Sydney from scanned maps.

Project description:This study creates a historic dataset of road opening dates in Sydney. A method was developed for map digitization to extract spatial data from historic maps and place them in a collective vector layer. The method includes extensive georeferencing of the maps, as well as editing and cleaning the maps through raster and vector analysis. Preferred methods for map digitization used in the project were identified. For a considerable area of Sydney, in which approximately 52000 road links were included, almost half of the links were identified with an open date by the start of the twentieth century. A further half of these links were confined to opening within a thirty-year period. The project has established a strong foundation for a historic road dataset for Sydney. It has also outlined methods and procedures that can be followed to progress the dataset further.

Dataset regarding the mechanical characterization of sedimentary rocks derived from Svalbard for possible use in local road constructions.

Project description:The dataset deals with the mechanical characterization of sedimentary rocks collected along the banks of Longyear river in proximity of Longyearbyen (Svalbard) at the junction of Bolterdalen and Adventdalen valleys. As the rocks represent possible local construction materials that can be employed in the new road infrastructures located in the Svalbard archipelago, three types of laboratory investigations were performed for mechanical characterization: Los Angeles tests, micro-Deval tests and repeated load triaxial tests. The grading curve of the material characterized with the repeated load triaxial tests corresponded to a typical one commonly adopted in Norway for road base layer (0-31.5 mm). The dataset offers a thorough overview of the mechanical properties relevant for road constructions and the dataset can be useful to both contractors and transportation agencies operating in the Svalbard archipelago.
