Project description:Visual stimuli that are uncomfortable to look at evoke a large neural response suggesting altered processing. While there is some evidence linking uncomfortable achromatic stimuli to impaired visual processing, the effect of uncomfortable chromatic patterns on visual cognition has yet to be explored. Large differences in chromaticity separation (e.g. red and blue) elicit visual discomfort, larger metabolic responses, larger visual evoked potentials, and greater alpha suppression compared to small chromaticity separations (e.g. pink and purple). We investigated the impact of stimuli that varied in their chromaticity separation (calculated in perceptual color space) on a visual task and their effect on neural responses across the cortex. Thirty participants completed a continuous pairs task (letters changed at 3 Hz) while grating patterns that differed in their chromaticity separation alternated with a grey screen at 5 Hz. The different temporal frequencies allowed for steady-state visual evoked potentials (SSVEPs) to the two stimulus-types to be measured simultaneously using electroencephalography (EEG). A subset of participants rated the gratings on a 9-point scale of discomfort. We observed greater ratings of discomfort and increased power at 5 Hz with the larger chromaticity separations. The increase in 5 Hz power with greater chromaticity separation was evident across the cortex. However, there was no significant effect of chromaticity separation on power at 3 Hz, or on reaction times, and no consistent effect on behavioral accuracy. Despite eliciting heightened neural responses across the cortex, short term exposure to uncomfortable chromatic stimuli does not adversely impact visual task performance.

Project description:Flickering lights can be uncomfortable to look at and can induce seizures in observers with photosensitive epilepsy. However, the temporal characteristics contributing to these effects are not fully known. In the spatial domain, one identified source of visual discomfort is when images have Fourier amplitude spectra that deviate from the natural (?1/frequency, 1/f) statistical characteristics of natural scenes, especially if they contain excess energy at the medium frequencies at which the visual system is most sensitive. We tested for analogous effects in the temporal domain, manipulating both the amplitude and phase spectra of the flicker. Participants judged the relative discomfort of temporal luminance variations in a pair of uniform 17° fields with different temporal modulations. In general, discomfort increased with deviations from natural amplitude spectra, particularly those with excess energy at medium frequencies or biased toward sharper spectra. These ratings of discomfort were also consistent with ratings of how natural the modulations appeared. However, the temporal discomfort judgments were also strongly affected by the phase spectra of the flicker, with fixed vs. random spectra producing very different responses. This was not due to the perceived regularity or predictability of the flicker, but could arise from a number of other potential factors. Our findings suggest that, like spatial patterns, visual discomfort in time-varying patterns depends in part on how similar they are to the amplitude spectra of temporal variations in the natural visual environment, but also point to the critical role of the phase spectrum in the perceived discomfort of flicker.

Project description:Much of the neural machinery of the early visual cortex, from the extraction of local orientations to contextual modulations through lateral interactions, is thought to have developed to provide a sparse encoding of contour in natural scenes, allowing the brain to process efficiently most of the visual scenes we are exposed to. Certain visual stimuli, however, cause visual stress, a set of adverse effects ranging from simple discomfort to migraine attacks, and epileptic seizures in the extreme, all phenomena linked with an excessive metabolic demand. The theory of efficient coding suggests a link between excessive metabolic demand and images that deviate from natural statistics. Yet, the mechanisms linking energy demand and image spatial content in discomfort remain elusive. Here, we used theories of visual coding that link image spatial structure and brain activation to characterize the response to images observers reported as uncomfortable in a biologically based neurodynamic model of the early visual cortex that included excitatory and inhibitory layers to implement contextual influences. We found three clear markers of aversive images: a larger overall activation in the model, a less sparse response, and a more unbalanced distribution of activity across spatial orientations. When the ratio of excitation over inhibition was increased in the model, a phenomenon hypothesised to underlie interindividual differences in susceptibility to visual discomfort, the three markers of discomfort progressively shifted toward values typical of the response to uncomfortable stimuli. Overall, these findings propose a unifying mechanistic explanation for why there are differences between images and between observers, suggesting how visual input and idiosyncratic hyperexcitability give rise to abnormal brain responses that result in visual stress.

Project description:Contrast sensitivity peaks near 10 Hz for luminance modulations and at lower frequencies for modulations between equiluminant lights. This difference is rooted in retinal filtering, but additional filtering occurs in the cerebral cortex. To measure the cortical contributions to luminance and chromatic temporal contrast sensitivity, signals in the lateral geniculate nucleus (LGN) were compared to the behavioral contrast sensitivity of macaque monkeys. Long wavelength-sensitive (L) and medium wavelength-sensitive (M) cones were modulated in phase to produce a luminance modulation (L + M) or in counterphase to produce a chromatic modulation (L - M). The sensitivity of LGN neurons was well matched to behavioral sensitivity at low temporal frequencies but was approximately 7 times greater at high temporal frequencies. Similar results were obtained for L + M and L - M modulations. These results show that differences in the shapes of the luminance and chromatic temporal contrast sensitivity functions are due almost entirely to pre-cortical mechanisms.

Project description:The theory of "visual stress" holds that visual discomfort results from overactivation of the visual cortex. Despite general acceptance, there is a paucity of empirical data that confirm this relationship, particularly for discomfort from visual flicker. We examined the association between neural response and visual discomfort using flickering light of different temporal frequencies that separately targeted the LMS, L-M, and S postreceptoral channels. Given prior work that has shown larger cortical responses to flickering light in people with migraine, we examined 10 headache-free people and 10 migraineurs with visual aura. The stimulus was a uniform field, 50 degrees in diameter, that modulated with high-contrast flicker between 1.625 and 30 Hz. We asked subjects to rate their visual discomfort while we recorded steady-state visually evoked potentials (ssVEPs) from early visual cortex. The peak temporal sensitivity ssVEP amplitude varied by postreceptoral channel and was consistent with the known properties of these visual channels. There was a direct, linear relationship between the amplitude of neural response to a stimulus and the degree of visual discomfort it evoked. No substantive differences between the migraine and control groups were found. These data link increased visual cortical activation with the experience of visual discomfort.

Project description:Stability studies are essential to be able to assign an expiration date to medications. Color variation is one of the organoleptic characteristics of actives substances or medications which can indicate the presence of contaminations, impurities or degradations products. However there is no data available comparing the often used visual examination with spectrophotometric measurements during stability studies. The aim of this study was therefore to evaluate precisely how different the two methods are, by comparing the change of color of two drug formulations chosen as models, assessed by visual examination versus a spectrophotometric colorimetric analysis. Paracetamol and parenteral nutrition solutions were stored in stress conditions for up to 46 days, and were subjected to a visual examination using color reference solutions and to lightness and chromaticity measurement to determine their specific color by UV-Vis spectrophotometry. The color of paracetamol solutions changed faster when exposed to stress condition (light), as did the PNS when exposed to heat. In both cases, color variations were detected earlier and more precisely by UV-Vis spectrophotometry than by visual examination. Color measurement using an UV-Vis spectrophotometry should advantageously replace visual examination when assessing colors changes during drug stability studies.

Project description:In the last decade, the behavioral sciences have described the phenomenon of trypophobia, which is the discomfort felt by some individuals when viewing images containing clusters of bumps or holes. One evolutionary hypothesis for this phenomenon is that this visual discomfort represents an adaptation which helps organisms avoid skin disease and/or ectoparasites. Even though trypophobic imagery and disease imagery are both examples of visual textures, to date there has been no comparison of the visual discomfort elicited by these two specific kinds of textures within the larger context of the visual comfort elicited by natural texture imagery more generally. In the present study, we administered the Trypophobia Questionnaire (TQ) and recorded the visual comfort ratings elicited by a large set of standard natural texture images, including several trypophobic and skin disease images. In two independent samples, we found that while all observers find skin diseases uncomfortable to view, only those scoring high on the TQ rated trypophobic imagery equally uncomfortable. Comparable effects were observed using both standard ANOVA procedures as well as linear mixed effects modeling. Comparing the ratings of both high-TQ and low-TQ participants to the standard textures, we find remarkably consistent rank-order preferences, with the most unpleasant textures (as rated by both groups) exhibiting qualitative similarities to trypophobic imagery. However, we also find that low-level image statistics which have been previously shown to affect visual comfort are poor predictors of the visual comfort elicited by natural textures, including trypophobic and disease imagery. Our results suggest that a full understanding of the visual comfort elicited by natural textures, including those arising from skin disease, will ultimately depend upon a better understanding of cortical areas specialized for the perception of surface and material properties, and how these visual regions interact with emotional brain areas to evoke appropriate behavioral responses, like disgust.

Project description:BackgroundVisual stimuli, such as stripes and texts, can induce "visual discomfort" including perceptual and somatic symptoms. Individuals reporting high levels of visual discomfort might experience migraine headache and may have reduced reading efficiency due to visual perceptual difficulties. This study aimed to develop and validate the Japanese version of the Visual Discomfort Scale, which measures proneness to visual discomfort.Methods and resultsIn Survey 1, 428 adults completed the Japanese version and a questionnaire assessing migraine morbidity. Rasch analysis revealed that the Japanese version is a unidimensional scale with a high amount of unexplained variance due to random noise rather than another dimension, and has high person and item reliabilities. Participants with migraine exhibited high scores in the Japanese version, indicating the construct validity of the scale. Survey 2 with 118 adults revealed a strong test-retest correlation for the Japanese version, indicating the stability of the scale.ConclusionThe Japanese version of the Visual Discomfort Scale is a sufficiently reliable and valid scale for assessing visual discomfort, although its unidimensionality leaves room for further improvements.

Project description:IntroductionNature-based art therapy is a therapeutic approach that uses natural elements and settings to promote well-being and health through creative expression, facilitated by a professional art therapist. Interest in nature-based mental health approaches surged, particularly following the COVID-19 lockdowns, as research highlights nature's role in health restoration and sustainability. Despite growth in the field, a comprehensive overview of nature-based art therapy remains absent. This scoping review aimed to map the research landscape and identify the thematic scope within this emerging field.MethodsA systematic search following the PRISMA-ScR guidelines across the ProQuest, SAGE, Scopus, Taylor & Francis, and ScienceDirect databases identified 11 publications that address art therapy involving nature and are published in English.ResultsThe review identified four key themes: areas of focus, nature engagement, core elements, and challenges in nature-based art therapy. The areas of focus encompassed overall mental health and well-being, emotion regulation and stress management, cognitive development, social bond and support, self-discovery and personal growth, trauma and grief management, creative self-expression, and environmental sustainability. The core elements, such as artwork, materials, and therapy settings, were identified. Although nature-based therapy, involving both direct and indirect nature engagement, described promising benefits, specific challenges, including complexities in client assistance, constraints in nature access, psychosocial and cultural barriers, and risk management, were also highlighted.DiscussionThis scoping review provides a comprehensive framework for understanding nature-based art therapy and underscores the need for further theoretical and practical evidence-based development in this field.

Project description:A recent study showed that people evaluate products more positively when they are physically associated with art images than similar non-art images. Neuroimaging studies of visual art have investigated artistic style and esthetic preference but not brain responses attributable specifically to the artistic status of images. Here we tested the hypothesis that the artistic status of images engages reward circuitry, using event-related functional magnetic resonance imaging (fMRI) during viewing of art and non-art images matched for content. Subjects made animacy judgments in response to each image. Relative to non-art images, art images activated, on both subject- and item-wise analyses, reward-related regions: the ventral striatum, hypothalamus and orbitofrontal cortex. Neither response times nor ratings of familiarity or esthetic preference for art images correlated significantly with activity that was selective for art images, suggesting that these variables were not responsible for the art-selective activations. Investigation of effective connectivity, using time-varying, wavelet-based, correlation-purged Granger causality analyses, further showed that the ventral striatum was driven by visual cortical regions when viewing art images but not non-art images, and was not driven by regions that correlated with esthetic preference for either art or non-art images. These findings are consistent with our hypothesis, leading us to propose that the appeal of visual art involves activation of reward circuitry based on artistic status alone and independently of its hedonic value.
